[Q] Froyo / Gingerbread possible? - Defy General

Hi is this handset locked down similar to Motorola Milestone so custom ROMs are not possible? or is it hackable like the Motorola Droid.

Hi,
it does not look that good for the Defy, our only hope ist 2nd Stage Booting of a Custom Kernel ROM.
Or Motorola releases the Keys for their Bootloader (they never will).
Also theres a Official Release of Froyo at Q2 in 2011
Regards

You know what makes me laugh? People think they will skip 2.2 for 2.3, lololol, yeah it will be a LONG time before we get gingerbread unless some programmer gets lucky.

Well its a good thing I asked on here. I will stay away from this handset. It is well priced for the hardware and was tempting. Looks like HTC and Samsung are the way to go for hackability. Galaxy S line and Desire already have 3rd party gingerbread ports.

Any word yet on Android 2.2

Is there going to be an upgrade for the desire ?
Would love that ! (Flash)
Any body got some info ?
of course will be, the question is when?
thats quick ....
Are we talking months or weeks untill 'droid 2.2 comes out
The internet is being a bit tight lipped.
The deisre is lovely, but not finished yet.
flash is nice, divx is vital and 720p video is something I wsan't expecting...
How are we going to get it when its released?
Will it be a user ROM style hardware flash through PC sync or will i just download a file to my phone, click go and 10minutes later my phone is amazing??
(i'm having fun wiping smug faces of iphone owning freinds as they ask what phone I have and i show them, then tell them I've got it for £15/mnth )
you'll get it here on XDA as usual. ready to be flashed on your device as any other ROM
2.2 aka Froyo: maybe next week!!!
I read this on engadget:
Engadget's post about Froyo
I don't really want to root my phone as it's I think really good as it is but I wouldn't say no to Froyo! especially since it apparently boosts performance a lot!
Quote form Engadget: "Update: How much faster is a Nexus One running Froyo? 450 percent faster, according to the Android Police. They claim to have a device running the as-yet-unreleased firmware that can perform over 37 million floating-point operations per second in the Linpack benchmark... compared to about 7 megaflops without. Oh yeeaaah."
As soon as a Froyo rom leaks, people will rip it apart and mod it to hell to get it to run on all kinds of devices. I'm sure we'll see Paul make a 2.2 Desire ROM, for example and now that HTC has released the Kernel source code, it should be easier to port existing quality roms like Cyanogenmod to the device. They'll all require root access to flash as they're unofficial roms. HTC will probably eventually port Froyo themselves, but that will probably take months.
Still, 2.2 hasn't shown up yet, so no dice. We'll have to wait until google I/O before that happens
it's going to be loooong till HTC themselves release it..but as soon as its out for nexus we'll see it here on xda in no time!
If you don't want to root & use a cooked ROM I wouldn't count on having it earlier than 6 months from now.
HTC needs to change Sense UI for Android 2.2 and looking at the Hero, which STILL does not have 2.1 I wouldn't expect it to be quick.

Oh don't be so dramatic. I could fit loads on mine just fine. And i rooted and installed apps2sd anyway. Don't get any Android phone if you expect to be able to install millions of apps.
Yeah, we will get it as a Custom Rom in the next few days and from HTC in several months

Months?? Seeing how things are going with the hero, I'd say they'll release it to the desire once the 2.3 is out. So better think of it as next year.
IMO Desire's owners are very important for HTC, since we are buying their flagship phones. I think they must keep us satisfied, if not, we will buy different phone next time. And I won't be happy if Nexus One owners will get 2.2 and we will not.
BTW isnt the evo 4g an Android 2.2 phone quz 2.1 didn't support 4g correct me if im wrong but if it is the update for the desire wont cost them so much time to port.

UK User Desire or N1?

Hello guys,
I've put my HD2 up for sale and i'm looking for a Android phone.
I've obviously got the Desire and N1 in mind however choosing between the two i'm just so unsure.
The Desire has the SenseUI which I love on my HD2, and by my understanding the Widgets are pretty good compared to the N1, but the Android updates will be slower because of SenseUI needing to be integrated on each release.
But I have to admit i'm one of those people who needs a device running on the latest software being all it can be, so with the fact the N1 is already on Froyo 2.2 i'm then pulled towards this phone, as I'm doubtful the Desire will receive the same support over time.
Also if I Root the N1 I presume some people are putting Sense UI on the N1's and I could do the same>?
Likewise could I do the same thing on the Desire, i.e. Vanilla Froyo 2.2 without SenseUI on the Desire? or are they different internally?
My other headache is I would need to buy the N1 from the states, and am concerned of it not working properly in the UK.
with pinch to zoom on the N1 now, the only difference is the slightley different pshyical layout, and SenseUI, with N1 getting the updates first.
If i've said anything incorrect please let me know, correct me, more information is always good
And if you were buying one now which would you buy?
Thanks, Luke.
Why do you NEED the latest software on the device? Bragging rights?
I went from an HD2 to a Desire and it's the best decision I ever made! Sense is better than on the HD2 - working out of the box - and bar A2SD (which I've added on a custom ROM) there's nothing you need 2.2 for...I'd get the Desire and wait for 2.2 to be released - N1 hardware is a bit pap and trackballs have a habbit of going wrong
This is my own view though
I had the same decision but went for the desire purely for money reasons. I thought that the desire would outset the n1 and get a better modding community but it seems I was wrong. There are lots of devs for the n1 that are pretty active and it is very apparent since the release of froyo. But I still prefer the real buttons on the desire but the optical trackball is probably not as easy to use as the n1. Plus from the deg forum I dont think that the desire has been fully rooted yet in respect to loading custom spl (but I may be wrong about that)....if I could go back I would have got the n1
the reason i look to the N1
is because like soulja i feel the Desire is receiving updates later than the N1. Froyo is a clear example. the N1 has it already. but the Desire is going to get it with no date set. my concern is the supporr HTC will offer in future, because of SenseUI. im concerned that the modding, updates will not be as good or regular.
the reason the HD2 is going is because the app market is naff, and app support is failing as everyone is waiting for WM7.
I need a phone i can fiddle with.
Why do you NEED to fiddle with it? What's wrong with it as it is? The N1 got the update first because it is a Google phone outright, all other handsets are 3rd party so of course there'll be a delay in updates - albeit, hopefully, not a long one
The Desire is better than the N1 in every way bar the updates to Android - and I , personally, can wait for FroYo
Sounds like you already set on the n1 but decide to enter a room full of Desire users to dissuade you for some reason.
Do you have to buy from US?

Soe people just need to fiddle, leave them to it! Why make loads of custom roms, and change them on a daily basis and flash all the time! People love doing this, and if the N1 has quicker updates, etc let em have it. I personally would love to have time to fiddle with a phone 24/7, but I get an hour a month, and love my desire out the box and Sense is great! If you don't like fiddling too much then great, but if someone loves fiddling then that's great too! Don't question WHY people want summit they just do! I personally would choose the desire as it's great out the box, and better hardware, and OK I may have to wait a little bit for 2.2/2.3, etc, etc in the future, but so what, it doesn't bother me (it may bother others and so be it!)
I love to fiddle, I cooked ROMs for my HD2 as the stock ROMs were poor to say the least. I'm just wondering why this person needs to fiddle. The phone, out the box, is nigh on perfect so there's not a lot to do. FroYo will be out eventually so probably best to wait for it...
It's purely curiosity
Problem i've faced.
IS that like most things we have an idea of how something should work. Anyone who's used a HD2 is probably well aware of how much better it is with C00kies hometab mod. I can't actually use mine Stock lol.
I've had my HD2 2 a while and have only just released 1.72, where as Unlocked people are rockin' on 2.10 While I no this is more todo with the network than the phone, I'd just like to be using the newer more update features as and when they arrive. I also like applying mods to user interface, and sometime functionality.
I'm doubtful of HTC's commitment to keep the Desire up to date. Sure you might see 2.2 but will you get 3.0? will HTC then have replaced the Desire with a new flagship model and say that the Desire is no longer on the update program?
Oddly my problem is with HTC and there Sense UI, don't get me wrong my HD2 without it is crap, but it slows down the updates significantly with regards to the Android system, and this concerns me.
@panos: the Nexus one isn't available in the UK simfree, so i have to buy from the US. However the Desire I an obtain from a UK retailer.
The Desire is £400
The Nexus1 is £437 phone,shipping,vat,import.
If Google release a new phone then the N1 will also be left out of the loop so that's not really a valid argument. You can get the N1 on Vodafone so you could always get a contract with them (assuming you're due an upgrade).
Your experience of WinMo is the same as mine - I was constantly cooking ROMs and Co0kie's HT was a must for me - but on the Desire I've not needed anything bar trying the new radios. You can't compare the 2 as they're worlds apart!!
I prefer the buttons on the Desire to the touchscreen ones on the N1 - and don't get my started on the stupid ball on the N1!!
End of the day, if you're someone who can't leave something alone then get the N1 but IMO the Desire is a superior device and Sense makes it even better. Plain Android is piss poor and just looks boring...
well in a few month when desire is released in north America It's going to gain a lot more attention.

If you really like sense ui then i guess the desire is better for you...but personally, after having the G1, i would go for a phone with a better dev community. I miss my g1 and custom roms,,,,it was very fun and i miss those days...
plus as some have said HTC normally are not very quick with updates like the hero
^^^but yeah i hope when usa gets it the deving will improve
Do hope I am not to late to input on this.
Well through a small loop hole in Vodafones mobile network, I managed to get both the Desire and the Nexus 1.
Initially I had an early upgrade from the sony satio (what an awful phone) to the HTC desire, and loved it. Was absolutely fantastic, loved all of it and couldnt think of trading it away.
However, it stopped working all of a sudden. Around 2 hours later on the phone to vodafone, I was sent a Nexus one the next day. To my dismay, my desire started to work again. Happy days. Anyway, after having both phones for around 2 weeks I've decided that I am to sell the desire, even though the nexus would get me more coin. Yeah, it doesnt look as pretty as sense, but after a while you dont miss it. As for rooting and having latest updates, its the way to go.
IMO get the N1, vodafone do a pretty good deal. Best advise is to make the contract over the phone, they will give you near anything if your convincing
I would have got the N1 if I could go back. As for Sense being good looking I have to disagree. HTC have removed the app transitions (the fade in and out) and replaced the 3d app drawer with a plain black app drawer that lags. Also they have managed to make the default music player worse than stock.
The only thing I like about sense is the widgets, but beautiful widgets is an adequate replacement.
Also the N1 is very easy to root and near impossible to brick, whereas HTC have gone out of their way to spoil the fun and prevent us getting a full root (so far)
I am considering selling my Desire and getting the N1
I got a Desire because the N1 was not available on contract if it was I would of probably gone for the N1.
I spent 18 months on a G1 and loved all the support it got from the modding community much the same as the N1 has now, but I also at the time was in awe of the ui on the Hero which turned out to be a better build than the G1 in my opinion, and I questioned my self on if I made the right choice to get the G1 or not or should of waited a bit longer for the Hero to be released.
Since the Hero came out later, it was behind on the modding scene then picked up pace a lot later on, much the same as I imagine the Desire scene will explode sooner or later especially if we get full root on the device, people also say HTC are slow at updates which is true, but I got an update as soon as took it out of the box, but I think due to the N1 not been available on contract though various carriers in the UK until now and as far as I am aware only Vodafone, HTC has has sold a hell of a lot more Desires though various carriers on contract, that i think Vodafone will ever sell of the N1 thus they might realise that 2.2 should be shipped out to the Desire sooner rather than later to keep its users happy.
My friend has a N1 and my personal opinion the Desire looks a hell of a lot better outside and inside.

[Q] On the fence, a N1 owner...

What's up XDA, I am a very happy Nexus One owner. That phone is amazing
as we all know. But, I can't lie the G2 is looking more and more tempting.
There are basically 2 issues as I see it:
The G2's hardware is superior to the N1's, period.
(Especially now with perm root, and those amazing overclocks.)
But, the N1 is a true Dev phone, so it gets all the latest software.
(i.e. Gingerbread, Miui, on and on...)
What do you guys think, would you switch from an N1 to a G2?
thats a tough one. I'm a former N1 owner and still miss it. Only reason why i jumped on board with the G2 is because i lost my precious N1 that i had paid the full amount for... Other then that, i'd still hold onto it.
I would hold on to it, especially with the Gingerbread update coming out. Maybe when Gingerbread gets ported to G2, you can make the switch..

I personally made the jump, but only because I root my phone.
If you dont root your phone I would stay with the N1 but if you do root you will get just about every goodie that the Nexus One does + better everything so I cant think of a reason to stay to be hones.
Gingerbread will be ported over by some developer here a short time after its released on the Nexus One so I wouldnt worry about that ^_^
I am a former N1 user that made the switch to a G2. I can say personally, it was a great choice.
I loved my N1. However, I wasn't huge into the custom roms and modding. I did my fair share of installing custom roms, kernel mods, etc. However, at the end of the day (i.e. after 3 phone replacements due to faulty hardware over the course of my ownership) I found myself sticking to the stock OTA 2.2 software with a few minor kernel mods like cifs.
My main reasons for switching the to G2 were:
1. I really missed having a hardware keyboard (I went from a G1 to the N1)
2. The G2 hardware was superior to the N1 in all respects
3. HSPA+ is awesome in the Seattle area
4. I was able to sell my N1 on Ebay for $440 which pretty much paid for my G2.
My current new found loves for the G2 are:
1. 1497Mhz overclock kicks BUTT in the PSX emulator!
2. Temproot is so easy and doesn't void my warranty
3. Permroot is now established so if I want to go mod crazy later I can
4. Battery life on my G2 is easily double what I got on the N1
Hopefully all this will shed some light on your question and help you with your decision
Yeah me too i switch from the N1 and i was missing it because the root but now we have full power to this phone it have better hardware but is u call iam happy with my decision

Former N1 owner here. The G2 is BY FAR a superior device, no contest. I would have waffled a couple days ago when we had no perma-root, but now? Absolutely, one hundred percent superior. The G2 will get all the latest software just like the G1 did -- you can run Froyo on a G1 with no problem, remember. It's the universal handset. The only thing it lacks is a front-facing camera, and I for one couldn't care less about that
I currently have and use both the N1 and the G2.
G2:
+ Faster hardware
+ Keyboard
+ Swype
- Bulky
- No CyanogenMod
N1:
+ Gets updates first
+ CyanogenMod
+ Thin
- No keyboard
- No Swype
I find myself carrying the G2 most of the time because I a corporate user, and I have to send a lot of email from the phone. I am much faster with long emails using the physical keyboard.
No offense the nexus one will get gingerbread but that the last update for that phone. If you want a phone that has support on update, beside rooting then go with the g2 it sure will taste Android 3.0 os honeycomb and Android 4.0 os ice cream for 2011.

I dont have any info on the nexus one not passing beyond 2.3 os.
Trust me the nexus one wont get Android 3.0 os from google.
It will be from xda developer, when google drop the ball on them. It the same way they did with the g1.
Either you root or not and google going to say the samething to users like they did with the g1 in may 2010. Telling the users that they wont support them in 2011.
Why should we trust you? Are you a Google employee? Does one have your ear? You're just making unsubstantiated claims based on your own opinion.
To the person who posted about "no" cyanogen mod.
ROMs are subjective, that doesn't matter unless you disparately need it and still, Cyanogen himself is working on a build for the g2. Plus when the N1 came out, it barely had any ROMs available for it. IT TAKES TIME PEOPLE!
The HW on the G2 is superior, the support will continue. From what it seems, gingerbread will be the last update on the Nexus One before it gets discontinued completely. Sure it was the Official Google phone, and it will always be but its getting old in age, and specs. It's time to move on to bigger and better stuff. I had an N1 and I sold it to buy this G2, and so far it pretty much owns the Nexus One in everything.

Yes, it is likely the G2 will have CM and will have it rather soon. It's not out now, so I was simply stating a fact. The hardware in the G2 is better, but I currently don't notice much a difference in usability between the two. That being said, I prefer the G2, but I am not prepared to write off my N1, yet.
Jay dont believe me i being with android for 2 years .

Yeah jay i wish that nexus one users get the latest operating system from google, because not everyone wants to root their phones. Especially, if their new and they dont know about this. And, will be scare of messing up their phones.

Going for Gold Campaign (2.3 instead of 2.2)

As you might have already read over the internet LG was behind the rumour that minimum hardware spec for Android 2.3 a.k.a Gingerbread is 1GHz. I just read that LG pulls back the claim and considering updating their mobiles to Android 2.3.
This is a good time for us Motorola Defy owners to kindly request Motorola to reconsider their decision and give us Android 2.3 instead in 2011.
I'm sure Motorola people are monitoring this board so let them hear us loud and clear if you would also like your next Defy's release update to be Android 2.3. What do you think?
Thank you.

Hehehe, yeah. Probably true.
Not Motorola's Fault
I would like to point out a rather complex issues in regards of what version of OS the phone gets released with, as well as the future upgrades. Motorola started development of the Defy long before Android 2.2 was released. And my guess when T-Mobile signed off on the phone it was tested by Motorola as well as T-Mobile with Android 2.1 only. From the product delivery point of view the fact that 2.2 came out while Defy was going through T-Mobile test cycle is irrelevant. Neither T-Mobile nor Motorola would've stopped the testing and go back to square one to change the OS to the latest and greatest version. Anybody who says otherwise has no clue on the way the product deliverable works.
Other point is that Motorola already may have a 2.2 or even 2.3 done for Defy but it has to go through the carrier's internal SI&T and QA process and get approved by T-Mobile. And if T-Mobile does not want to get Defy upgraded to 2.2 -- well guess what? No one will see the 2.2 running on Defy officially. Motorola cannot go over T-Mobile's head and release 2.2 to Defy customers without compromising the business relationship with the carrier.
Just my $0.02.
It would be incredible for now to develop a retail firmware wt Froyo. The 2.3 still a dream LOL
Seems like a no-brainer to us - but apparently manufacturers have zero interest in supporting their devices after managing to con people into buying them.
If it weren't for the Defy being so cheap, and ruggedized, I'd have bought an HTC without looking twice.
DEFY will coming soon with 2.2 in China(except for Hong Kong and China Taiwan) So I think 2.3 is possible.

You buy the device with a particular version of Android, the manufacturer doesn't have to give any upgrades, if they do its purely a bonus to the owner. IMO never buy a phone on the hope that it might get upgraded, and don't believe any dates published on the internet about when an upgrade is going to come - even if its from "official" sources.

I agree with you 100%. However, providing Motorola can fix the speaker phone issue soon enough then Defy would become their best selling handset. Over seventy pages of forum posts (by Germans) shows the level of demands for Defy.
I'm also sure Defy would eventually be their best new selling unlocked handset as well and I hope then Motorola cease the opportunity to do something good. Those with unlocked version of Defy are not at the mercy of any carriers.
Please people, as much as you like Motorola's Defy they also like your money too otherwise how Motorola can pay its directors crazy salaries? We can always encourage Motorola to do something good for us rather than acting as spokesperson of Motorola that nothing good will ever come out of Motorola in relation to its customers. First for everything! : )

The atrix 4G has received an unlocked boot loader

Now that A4G revived its unloacked bootloder from leaked cods from Motorola upcoming gingerbread For the phone.Do you think those cods would be useful for our defy or is Motorola the only key to unlocking our bootloader

Different hardware and different platform,Maybe it's useless.
Anyway,It's a good news for all the Moto users.
It's a great first step!
Ya probably so!

Heard the news too. The bootloader will be officially unlocked with Android Gingerbread release update. A probability for Defy if it gets Android Gingerbread.
Defy might not get gingerbread, but the defy+ (I think it is the cheaper rugged defy without water resistancy, just guessing though) probably will since there are gingerbread leaks for this device. Maybe, hopefully, a feature leak will have the option to unlock the bootloader. So even if the defy doesn't get gingerbread, the defy+ might, which roms work perfect on the defy, except for green lense defy's.

Just yesterday I was looking for a spare battery for Defy. Every shop I went to they told me Defy is too new to have a spare battery widely available for it yet. So why Defy all a sudden is too old to have Gingerbread? With the mess Motorola made with Froyo update it only feels right to give us the Gingerbread as an apology since Motorola is not good at making that in a written statement. Communication is not their strongest attribute.
Haha I agree and sure hope they will! I Wasn't saying defy is too old at all, I'm just not as optimistic about Motorola as you I guess because of all the let downs.
I was just saying that IF the defy doesn't get it we might be able to unlock via those leaked mb526 roms. There certainly is hope, because you're right about that they kinda owe us gingerbread after all the let downs and because the gingerbread roms of the mb526 works on the defy.
are you saying that we will can unlock the defy for free ??? without paying a code ??

It's for unlock bootloder not Operator
For the moment CG42.smg is crypted on all leaked Gingerbread so it's nor available for Defy now .
If you would like to see if it's ok with the next leaked ROM, use Motorola Android Depacker extract the files ans open with hex editor CG42.smg, if you can read text the bootloder is not crypted and if you can't the bootloader is crypted .ùùI don't know if the key that Motorola post work for Defy and i don't know how use it ^^
Is it anyhow possible to integrate the Atrix's CG42.smg in a sbf for defy?

Atrix has different hardware, doing this will probably brick Defy.
I heard the news but probably it's only for the Atrix. We will need to wait for a official ginger release for defy :-s
