MS approves Jailbreaktool for WP7 - Windows Phone 7 General

Thanks to Laurentius26
To my opinion all these Marketplaces restrict the user to much to one manufacturer.
I mean why can't you just load a cab on your device and install it?
Today I was reading some very good news on Tweakers.net about WP7.
The ChevronWP7-tool to Jailbreak WP7 is coming soon and is approved by Microsoft.
That means you will be able to install apps without being restricted to the Marketplace from MS.
Now the only thing we still need is the Mango update ;-)

Microsoft can remotely revoke app licenses

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/17/windows-phone-marketplace-can-remotely-revoke-app-licenses/
This is the one thing I hate the most about Apple and their iPhone and now Microsoft are doing the same.
They will be able to revoke any app licenses from the Marketplace. They can basically control what you have on your phone and if for some reason they decide they don't like a particular app? License Revoked...
...remember the marketplace protection?
Hopefully, it'll keep the bulls**t apps to a minimum. I hope MS doesn't take some moral high-road though
They have had this ability on Windows Mobile as well, to send a kill signal.

This sort of Amazonian chicanery is why I don't buy anything from the marketplace (I do use it for freeware). I buy direct from developers. The difference is, that won't be an option for WP7S.

Actually it is inherit in the OS since atleast 6.5, and has nothing do with the marketplace (though I'm sure it ads another level). http://www.focusoft.biz/2009/09/18/...hone-and-android-with-its-own-app-kill-switch
Though I recall a dicussion regarding platform security and this remote kill as far back as the original Orange SPV, the first ever Microsoft smartphone.
Though Android and iPhone also have this. So what platform you going to move to?
I guess maybe a rooted and heavily modified Android?

You're wrong, it is about marketplace applications. They can't kill an application on 6.5 that hasn't rec'd marketplace DRM, or even know it exists on your handheld for that matter.
Android is capable of sideloading, the problem is I'm not sure there is any real market for apps outside their marketplace. That you technically can go outside their central store doesn't mean there's a useful selection there to choose from. On winmo of course, the culture was such you could almost always go direct to the developer, or at least to a 3rd party marketplace even after MS got their central store. I won't be getting rid of my TP2 any time soon, but when I do I'll be looking for the least restrictive DRM among other things. I know DRM has never prevented piracy and only punishes customers, and I'll always do as little as possible to reward that kind of behaviour from companies. It's usually a "lessor evil" analysis.
WinMo has had a app killswitch in it for a very long time. It's used by Exchange/Mobile Device Manager to enforce application policies on the phones, e.g. prevent employees from installing anything other than what came on the phone.
I moved this thread that has nothing at all to do with software development to the more general forum.
Software development would be more like, How do I access the functions, and how is Microsoft implementing and applying these.

A new jailbreak coming soon for WP7

http://windowsphone7central.com/articles/windows_phone_device_manager_a_new_jailbreak_coming_soon_for_wp7-01-21-11
Great News hehe !
With ChevronWP7 hitting the end of its working life next month, we have some good news to report on. Julien Schapman, the creator of TouchXperience and recently the WP7 Registry Editor, has released details about an upcoming project, titled Windows Phone Device Manager. Most likely inspired by Windows Mobile's infamous device manager, the tool allows you to manage your sideload your applications, explore the device, sync with Zune, and display information about the device.
Even better, the tool will automatically developer unlock your device upon connecting, which removes the need for any ChevronWP7 hassle. The tool is set to release in the next few days, and is compatible with all Windows Phone 7 devices. The developer of it also states that if it becomes possible, he might create an open marketplace, similar to Cydia on iOS devices.
How the tool works is not clear, but fortunately the unlocking method it uses will continue to work even after the next update. Read more at TouchXperience.

This is old news? That article is based on what the developer posted on his website on Jan 10th. The program was supposed to be released last week but he has not released it yet because he wants to make sure the unlock will work after the update. So no guarantees yet.
Sounds promising though!
And how would he know it continues to unlock after the upgrade I wonder? Geez, talk about hitting your own drum.

hope this unlocker works for my hd2 :/
can´t jailbreak on my windows 7 ...
I read somewhere that it, too, uses a fake certification server. If that is true it will most likely NOT work. It's just to simple to fix this for MS.
But the software itself is pretty cool, too. And as long as no one has got an update on his/her device, we can't state whether it works or not. But the idea of an open Marketplace on WP7 is pretty cool. IMHO, Developing for/Hacking WP7 goes a lot faster than I've expected!
Please keep discussion and speculation threads in WP7 General!

[APP News] New Jailbreak and config tool

Guys,
There's a new tool comin' close on the horizon - Windows Phone Device Manager, applicable to all WP7 devices. So instead of trying in vain to use chevy, that could possibly harm yr machines, why not simply wait for the tool and help developer Julien Schapman (Schaps at XDA) and his beta team in some way.

this apps will be avaliable after first update from MS
it will actually be released before the update.
Because I was bored getting hundreds of emails from people asking me to send them WP Device Manager so they can continue to use pirated applications, and because there will be a short term solution for homebrews, I decided not to include my jailbreak tool. I respect other developers and I don’t want to be responsible for piracy, I’ve been contacted by Brandon Watson from Microsoft and I wish to be involved in the official homebrew support on Windows Phone.

I asked a very similar questiom on Schap's Forum, but got no response. I can only assume that he has found a way to deploy homebrew apps without using the Developer's Tool Hack, such as Chevron. I do believe that he stated this would work after NoDo. I coukd be wrong because I can't find the quote.

I don't think it would be just app deployment cuz you could modify tiles, icons, wi-fi&BT settings, registry and etc and also exchange all kinds of files incl. office between PC and phone.
Besides I fear that as soon as so much expected nodo update goes public chevy will become no-go
chevy is no go
but is chevy a jailbreak or a sideload unlocker? Developers are working on a bonafide jailbreak that gives us really nice admin access...let's allow some of them to work their magic
as far as txp goes, we'll see I'm a beta so if I get a magical email about this, I'll post a story on it...

nop they are not, they are similair but different.
I dont think the beta is coming as soon as they said
https://twitter.com/#!/BrandonWatson/status/83158862823297025
Rats...... but thanks for the update~
The update is indeed for paid and registered mango beta testers. So you do not only have to have a paid account, but you also need to be registered for beta testing Mango.
Further more, if you are such developer and you upgrade to Mango, be aware that there are new limitations to sideloading! Many homebrew tools and OEM tools won't be possible to sideload anymore.
When the moment is there that the update is available (not tomorrow), and you do decide to upgrade, I really want to ask everyone to capture the traffic during the update-process with Wireshark. If we have as much captures as possible, we can possibly create our own updater, like Chris Walsh did with NoDo. But we do need as much captures as possible to see which phones get which rom-packages. We should avoid half updates like in the original tool from Chris Walsh.
If you have a capture of the update, please post here.
Thanks,

I think they'll do something similar to the XBox Dashboard Previews, meaning that ultimately you'll be able to install mango preview on any device, but they'll enable Windows Live sign-in only for registered devices, server side.
Unfortunately Microsoft has always been *****y about these preview things.

I'm no expert in Wireshark. I know how to use it for my own purposes. So this is what I would do, but if someone else has additional suggestions, feel free to help. The updates are over standard http, not https, so that makes it easier.
- Connect your phone to your computer and wait for Zune to be ready with sync.
- Download and start Wireshark.
- Select the network-interface you want to log (to be sure keep only one network-interface enabled, just to be sure you'll capture the correct interface).
- To be sure you capture the traffic from the phone too, go to menu Edit / Preferences. Select User Interface / Capture. And enable option Capture packets in Promiscuous Mode.
- To filter all unwanted data type this in the Filter textbox: http && !tcp.analysis.out_of_order && !tcp.analysis.retransmission
- Start update with Zune.
- When the update is ready, stop the capture and save it to a file.
To test if this works, do the above and use Internet Explorer on your phone. You should see the traffic in Wireshark.

Yes read those, it does not specifically says student accounts wont get it. Brandon watson also tweeted "@arnehelseth Every developer matters. Every. Single. One. Deep breath everyone". Don't know if this means something and is in the right context or not.
The articles just say it will be released to developer unlocked apphub account, which you can normally get by paying 99$ (they dont speak about student unlocks in particular).
"Neowin has received multiple independent tips that the beta will be made available for all devices through the MSDN Create hub for those with developer accounts, on June 22/23, with Microsoft set to make the announcement sometime during the next 24 hours. The beta will not be restricted to "favorite" developers but will be generally available to anyone with a paid subscription, and will be able to be loaded on any of the production devices."
Yes it indicates paid subscription, however does not really rule out student subscriptions since they are pretty much equal to MS. I dont know if we have to take these words literally or if its quickly written.
"The software giant will also offer beta bits for developers to load directly onto their devices, reports Neowin. Mango ROMs will be made available to existing Windows Phone developers via Microsoft’s App Hub development program. Access to the developer program is charged at $99 per year."
Students have free access to the App Hub development program.
I could not find where you need to sign up for the beta, have not read a mention about this. I could not find it in these sources.
You are probably right though that its only for paid subscriptions, since its easier to check who is a ginuine dev. I just wondered since I have not seen a clear "No to student account" post so I was not really sure about what to believe. Thank you for the clearification.
All sources I read stated that you need to have a paid registration. So it does not say 'no students' but students don't pay, so I guess that rules it out.
About the registered Mango beta tester, I don't see it right now, but I'm sure I've read that.
Anyway, we'll wait and see. Speculating now is not of much use.

Ok. That would be cool. But I have to stress again: If you upgrade to Mango, be aware that there are new limitations to sideloading! Many homebrew tools and OEM tools won't be possible to sideload anymore. So if that is a problem for you, then you shouldn't upgrade. What would be interesting to know is, if you have such software that uses native code (like WP7 Root Tools, TouchXplorer, Screencam, etc) already on your phone, will it still be possible to use it after the upgrade?? And.. will the ChevronWP7 unlock survive the upgrade if you have to "prevent relock tweak" applied??

Yes I know. Thats what I wonder as well. Since we could use OEM apps added trough the marketplace. So upgrading with these apps in place might work. Ill also make a few zune backups so I can roll back just in case.
If roottools still works we might be able to set the prevent relock again. Im wondering about the sideload limit, because thats the most annoying thing for me. 3 is not much to sideload and I like to keep the apps Im developing on my phone to test them on the road.
Well Im trying not to get my hopes up for Mango anytime soon, but if its for students also Ill give it a shot. And I can maybe PM you before, if you can think of some things you want me to test out for you.

Yeah, seems Google dislikes MS more than Apple. Considering MS is making Google pay royalties, maybe that is why.
My guess is, that the iOS market is simply too big not to support, whereas the minor userbase of WP7 is "neglectable" for google.

Well...that's one reason I say Google will have its competitors by the 'nads because of G+ becoming the dominant social site. People will want and need it on their phones and if their phones don't have it or will get it, people will adopt a new phone system.
MS needs to be really, really nice to Google so they can get G+. It is important. MS doesn't have the infrastructure enough to make their own social site like Google has.
Once G+ is "live", they'll probably have APIs available that allow third party developers to code G+ apps, though.

A Google developer posted something on his blog about Google+, and a bunch of people commented on it and left him suggestions, and so the developer simply compiled the most popular suggestions (which is that list). No one said those things would ever be worked on.
Nothing official, and considering Google has not shown any interest in Windows Phone 7, I don't see anything in the near future.
G+ does work on the current IE version but in a basic mobile format
you need to go to https://m.google.com/app/plus

The mobile page is too limited, you could also use the full page. It works perfectly fine.

it will never happen, my opinion is based on the fact that they list windows mobile as supported, and wp7 is not listed, they have not released google maps, and they have impeded Microsoft from releasing a better youtube app

They will eventually release one because a social network has to have broad platform support to succeed, and with the App-Centric nature of modern smartphone OSes they cannot depend on a browser. People are starting to demand stuff like PUSH notifications and in-app chat functionality and a Browser is clearly inferior to an app when it comes to delivering that type of functionality.

Fortunately for right now, saving the page as a favorite and then pinning it to the start screen almost satisfies. The thing lacking, as you say, is push notes.
another thread about this useless wannabe Facebook, google only did this to get back at FB for rejecting them and of course to try to gain this ridiculous monopoly over the world. what's worse? they don't even give a **** about peoples privacy and safety.
