[Q] next unrevoked release?? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

does anyone know when the next release for unrevoked is due? The current one is 3.3 i believe...

once a new exploit is found, they will probably release a new version.

well i know that much...i meant like any guesses or estimates at a date. anyone?

I'd tell you to go ask the Unrevoked guys, but their IRC Title is don't ask.....

I nricked my phone. Bad. Lost everything after having flashed roms for half a year on the evo. Brought it in to a Sprint store, the manager there was an ex employee of mine, who I fired. But she got a better job, so she was actually grateful. So much so that she wrote my phone off as a software issue and put me in to receive a phone in two days. I did, and anxiously pushed the ota through(it was the Friday it became available). Stupid me, I had no way of gaining root. So luckily I found out this refurbished phone had a hdmi port problem, it would not read the signal without wiggling the cord around. I called up Sprint, told them I wanted a new phone( thus was after I brought it in to two different stores to try to have it downgraded to group, unsuccessfully) and they said no problem, eight to ten days, due to a border. I NICELY asked for a new phone, not a refurbished one. Three days layer, today, I got my phone. Brand new with a manufacture date of 6/02/11. Excited but nervous, I booted up, went to hardware info, viola! Android 2.2
Back in business. Rooted a few minutes later, and am now downloading Kings newest version of 3.0
As far as waiting for unrevoked, I was willing to. I appreciate all development persons who make my phone better. So sit tight homie, or find a workaround yourself. Let those who provide us with things we can't do ourselves work on their own time. Asking for a time or date is expecting service you dont deserve. Off puttish, really...

Lol great story.the whole reason I started this thread is because I can't find a release date anywhere. I very much appreciate what the devs do for us on the evos, my phone lasts 24 hours plus cause of them

Asking us about Unrevoked is like asking a Brick Layer about Photoshop keyboard shortcuts and the effect of color dodge on a 3 color gradient

How to return EVO to Sprint store?

I'm one of the idiots who decided to flash the 2.2 pre-release before even looking for a rooted version. I'm a dumbass, I know. Being new to the whole ROM thing, I figured I would just revert my last nandroid when I was down playing with it not realizing thinking that without root it's impossible. I want to return my phone to store where I got it from a week ago. Is their a credible reason that I can get them to exchange it for? Thanks!

Tell them it keeps turning off. Tell them you have had multiple drop calls and that it freezes.

+1, they're gonna get a good refurb out of it anyways
Sounds like a plan, thanks. Now I just have to explain how I am running FroYo. (It updated itself?)

Are they actually going to check that? *shrugs* Think of a backup just in case perhaps, but idk.
You can always just tell them that you downloaded it from HTC's website. There's nothing illicit about that.

Sprint sent out the update to some ppl Fri which is how the development teams here got it some how... so just say you checked for updates and it downloaded.. plus your phone is not rooted so you will be ok.

Thank y'all for your tips!
I took it back to where I bought it today and explained to them that "I got this update the other day and ever since I have been having random issues with calls dropping out and haven't been able to maintain a stable 4g connection." The guy, who had sold the phone to me initially, took it to the back for five minutes and then came up and said he couldn't find anything wrong and that I would just have to "live with it" until the next update is released. I tried the whole I'm switching carriers threat but that did not work. He actually suggested I do that if I wasn't satisfied! Now, I understand that he was trying to do his job and reduce churn (I worked for another Sprint store and that was how we were trained), but to suggest leaving is just plain ridiculous (we would get fired for that)!
Having already been shot down and knowing the answer was still probably going to be no, I went to another store ~20 miles away. The guy there told me the same thing about not being able to return it if they couldn't find anything wrong. To my surprise, however, he said that with the last update they had a lot of returns and for that reason he would take it back.
I am now sitting here staring at a brand-new 2.1/1.47 EVO! I am getting ready to root and see if I can restore my last nandroid. Having learned my lesson, I think I will wait until someone comes out with a new rooted version of the final OTA.

[Q] sprint service center failed

Went to the service center today and the tech spent about 30min trying to downgrade my phone but eventually said it couldn't be done. So he said that he would put in an order for another phone for me but said it may be a refurb. My phone is working great so far with the leaked 2.2 but can't get the official update like everyone else. When they call me to pick up my replacement phone should I pick it up risking getting a refurb or just wait for a fix from HTC or Sprint?
If it were me, and there wasn't anything physically wrong with the phone, I'd keep it and try to wait for a fix to this in the forums. I would guess, as far as sprint and htc are concerned, that you are just sol because you jumped the gun and didn't wait for an official final release that sprint approved for the phone. They could say that it's your problem, not theirs. You could exchange it since you have the chance to.
That's a tough call. If it were me and I had to pick the lesser of the two evils, I'd take my chances and wait it out. Or you could suck it up, take the refurb, and learn your lesson to not be so quick to flash the first thing that comes along.
I'm guessing there will eventually be a fix cooked up here to fix the snafu. I might be wrong too. Decisions, decisions!
yeah your right, I do have about a 4 or 5 days to decide because of course the phone is back ordered. So now i can see if a fix turns up until then. Boy i gotta learn to be patient.
See this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744890
yeah i saw this. this is what made me take my phone to the sprint store.
ok I wasnt sure... seems some can do it but others havent got a clue...Go figure..
I say root, install 2.1 and then do ota or just get froyo on it from here. Don't know if there's a root method for froyo yet tho. Didn't check.
Have u done factory reset then search for HTC update? Sometimes reps are weetarded. I was told by a Sprint rep to cancel my service because she was an idiot... long story

[Q] Root method for 2.3 Gingerbread and help please

OKay for weeks now i have been searching ways to Root my HTC EVO I have been looking and looking maybe i am confused so now i see great methods to root the files are no good such as ginger breaks and other ways such you tube videos but unable to find a video who do play by play how to do a easy successful root method now i am currently S-on my Hboot is 2.15 and build number is 4.24 now i know unrevoked is not working since the update make a long story short if anybody has some of a method please reply in a nice way and don't bash me because i may not know this phone stuffed by i am geek in computers so we all have good things what we do best.
Put simply, 2.3 hasn't been rooted yet, they're making progress but you're out of luck for the moment.
Still no method yet, waiting impatiently, check the forums multiple time daily. I'm sure there will be an announcement when it available, so just keep your eyes peeled. Just rooted my wifes evo because she never accepted the OTA, now I'm drooling in jealousy.
That hurt my head

Well I have my HTC evo 4g fully rooted with unrevoked. What I did is I broke my phone and I'm under the black tie program with sprint. I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE. They asked if I would rather it come fully activated. Or would I rather activate it myself. I told them I'd rather activate it myself. I paid the 100 dollar deposit and while Isaac activating my phone I stopped the firmware and software update. It only comes on the phone as an ota if you activate yourself. If they activation it you will be stuck where you are. After stopping the firmware update I was sitting at stock android 2.2 aka froyobwith hboot 2.10. If you're willing to spend 100 bucks to do this, it will come a lot faster than the HTC bootloader update or the developers hacking methods. No offense to the development team. You Guy do an amazing job. But yea, that's the way I did it. Then I rooted with unrevoked and am currently running cm7 and am extremely happy with improved battery life along many other things. Maybe this will help you

I agree with this. NEVER EVER EVER EVER LET SPRINT activate a phone. DON'T EVEN LET THOSE ASSHOLES TOUCH IT! Biggest mistake you can EVER EVER make! spread this around. :-D However!, I find it hard to believe on the "I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE."
It might not be unused but it definitely came in mint condition with the froyo firmware on it so that's all I needed lol as of right now if you're willing to spend the 100 bucks its well worth it in my opinion. Good luck getting root guys ill see if I can't find a way to help the devs and the others working in the collaboration in the development section.

That is not necessarily true. My evo was destroyed in a car accident. Asurion sent me my replacement. I was hoping it would be 2.2 and denied their request to activate my phone. When the new phone arrived, it had already been loaded with 2.3.3. I didn’t even bother to activate it and ended up going back to my rooted hero for the time being. Getting a replacement phone is a crapshoot. There are multiple posts on XDA giving anecdotal reports of replacement phones. Most are shipping with gingerbread. Some still will have froyo. Some (very few) will come with S-off. Don’t assume that by breaking your phone and dropping $100 you will automatically be shipped a phone capable of being unlocked at present time.

It really depends on if the phone was made before the ota release date and whatnot. You cn request that it come with 2.2 instead of gb. This method may not work for everyone but I know that it has worked for the friends I have around my area. They saw what happened and wanted to try it and its worked for them. If you feel that its a longshot at getting the right phone
Then by all means stick with what you've got. I just was willing to try anything to get rid of gb. But now I'm running cm7 with a tiamat kernel and am very happy. Little side note: I actually didn't break my phone on purpose.

I see your method and point so I am in KCMO AKA Kansas City MO doing some research online and from Best Buy they have an HTC EVO for 99.99 in white Android 2.2 and even called them to confirmed but doing some thinking and playing around on the Android Market SPB 3D its Awesome since I cant root my phone but I pay the 14.95 that way my phone is not harm and I have my warranty still but i am sticking with SPB 3D
They just came out with the revolutionary root for gingerbread. Look in the android dev section and you'll find it. It works too. I rooted a friends phone using that method and he had absolutely no issues with his phone. Even though my usb cord had a short in it there was no problem with it that made it brick even though it disconnected multiple times. Id have to say that it is a very safe root method. So check it out if you're still interested in root

They'll know if your phone accepted the OTA or not. I seem to recall reading that VZW would "assume" that if your phone didn't receive the OTA that you'd be rooted, or something to that effect.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. Rooting just voids your warranty, so if they knew that when you try to get a warranty replacement, they may charge you full price. That's assuming they even check it. So if you're rooted and not making a warranty claim, the phone is yours, VZW will still take your money happily.
Whenever I've been in VZW stores, the reps even have theirs rooted. So I wouldn't worry about it too much bro!
Just act like nothing is wrong and keep it rooted. Seriously
Im going to. Eff them

not trolling but. i dont see how they can see if you updated or not. i mean everything on the phone is google and not VZW so i dont see how they would know. if they did know then everyone with a root phone couldn't get a replacement and i was one of them. first phone i got the speaker went out in 3 weeks. i RUU to stock and took it in and they gave me another one that day.
if you do have the link to what you read i would like to see it. (again not being a d!ck. im just wondering.

I don't have a link so I'm not exactly sure, but I saw something about how some VZW tech support could see the build # (and maybe some other things you'd see in the "about phone" menu) of the device you were talking to them on. So from there, it could be assumed you were rooted if not running a stock rom.
Again, assuming they could extrapolate that information in that specific circumstance, I don't know why they would care (aside from software-related warranty issues). Most reps I've talked to in a VZ store that had some measure of expertise in their field has a rooted phone.
I believe you have nothing to be concerned about with working for them and having a rooted phone I know a few people who work for Big Red, but they don't have their phone rooted because they just don't care for it (simple minded lol).
They will entice you to upgrade to the latest greatest new phone with your employee discount lol. But assuming you're going to stick with what you have, just don't go volunteering information unless they ask since it's no of their business.
But do be prepared to sign a buttload of nondisclosure papers that you won't share any inside information (but should hehehe).

they do, one of them pulled me out of the main floor once when i asked him about the gb update, then recommended this site
but, as far as the OTA gingerbread. don't take it, the risks outweigh the benefits.
risks
. No root for a while (months, or a year)
. Bloatware, that you can't take off, see risk #1
. no roms for a while either
to be honest, ive been running GB for a month now via gingersense, and i like it, yeah the 720p is choppy, yeah, i have other stuff.
but, i'm mainly concerned about the new radio and new kernal
so, take others advice, and just wait.
Will do. And anything i hear, ill post in general. The store im going to work at is pretty chill. I rooted and s-offed my first inc, broke mms (somehow) and they exchanged itbeven looking at the bootloader.
Your phone has now contracted phone AIDS. Shoulda used protection while rooting. LD

How can I get my Nitro back to stock

I recently let a guy borrow my phone while we were fishing a bass tournament and he dropped it in the lake. He gave me his nearly brand new Nitro as a replacement. The problem is that he had rooted his Nitro and didn't back it up before he rooted it. I want to get the phone back to stock like it came out of the box but being the noob that I am, I have no idea how to do that. I am sure I could pay LG to do it for me for a price. I am a disabled vet and my disability checks aren't as big as my active duty checks were so every nickel I have is more than accounted for. Is there anybody out there that can help with the software and directions? I am fairly computer savvy but I have a long way to go as far as my cell phone knowledge goes. Thanks a million for any help you guys can provide!!

If you can wait just a couple more days, there will be a very easy way to install the latest Android version to your phone that will restore it to factory defaults but with the new Android version released by AT&T. It's supposed to officially release on July 31. Once that day comes, you should be able to follow these steps: http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/ATT_Update/index.jsp
Thanks!!
Man, it will be that simple? No more root or anything? I know I must sound like a complete moron but until I learn alot more about roms, etc, I just need my phone to be stock. He said it had clock mod or something like that. I assume all that will be gone as well? As soon as I get an upgrade availability, I am going to use this LG as a guinea pig as I learn about phone customization. I'm sure I'll end up ruining it but maybe I will learn something first. Thank you very much for the response. I can definitely wait a couple more days.

Well have fun lol. that tool does seem pretty easy. I bet it could be used in case anything gets screwed up to... but you never know..
And clockworkmod is a backup type thing where you can flash zips ( like roms, kernels, etc ), or make backups of your phone, and restore them.
But really though if you dont care about a little faster phone and a little more custumization then normal you probally wont need to flash roms and such
but have fun

Yeah, that update method will remove Clockworkmod and you will be unrooted. There actually wasn't a very efficient way to get back to 100% stock until this new update comes out, so it's pretty good timing on your part. ;p
Well, guys, I got my phone updated...I think. Right in the middle of the update, my doorbell rand and my dog took off for the door and pulled my usb cable out of the phone. I got it plugged back in withing a couple of seconds. It seems to be working okay. I wonder if it messed anything up. I tried to re-do the update but the LG Update tool said the phone was updated and wouldn't update again. I guess we will see.
That's not good...
