So I like using Google Voice for my voicemail but I didn't know it was going to take over as my sms carrrier too. I've set up the default application to be the native sms but it still is taking over. The reason why I don't want google voice is it seems i have to have data on to get my messages. I turn off my data when not in use during the day to save battery. I'm almost being forced to turn data on all day. IS there a way to change this? I'm sorry if this has been covered but I've searched many threads and most people want to enable it.. Thanks for any answers.
Nope. Data is required for GVoice to work. Same thing if you are on a Google Voice voice call data is needed. That is how everything is transmitted. Over the "net".
Uninstall the app, re-install, this time don't check the 'use a sms' blah blah. Also you have to have data on to use; if you don't wana use 3G, use wifi [if able] as it consumes less power.

You just need data to start the voice call.
It sounds like you upgraded your sprint # to be your google voice number. Undo that. You can have a different google voice # and still use it as your voicemail for your sprint phone.
If you ported your sprint number into Google voice have fun with your permanent SMS application.

Have you tried clearing cache and dalvik cache?
Then reboot and go to programs > default apps, choose the standard SMS and test.

I have been a long time user of the sprint voicemail app. I have decided to go ahead and stick with Google Voice after trying it out. I went thru the procedure and have it integrated with my sprint phone now. My question is can I go ahead and uninstall/remove the sprint voicemail app or is it still needed?
It is not needed. Assuming you are rooted I would back it up using titanium backup just in case you want it back in the future before you remove it. Or you could just freeze it
Thanks for the info. I removed the stock app. I have one other question now. Since I integrated google voice with sprint, all of my text messages are going to google voice now. How can I stop that so that I can use handcent again?
I've always used GV as well, and I've always uninstalled Sprint's Voicemail app with no problems. I tried doing that Sprint/Google Voice integration, but like you said all your messages come through to GV and I was unable to switch this back. I even emailed their support and never heard back...I've switched back to the non-integrated installation and haven't had any problems.
Try going to settings, then manage applications and find Google voice. Once you find it try hitting "clear defaults". Now go to your people app or contacts and select a random contact and find the option to send a text. There should be a pop up that ask you which application you want to text through and choose always use the stock sms app.

After doing some searching I have found that once you integrate sprint to google voice you cannot use any other app for the text messaging regardless of what you select as your default.

Glad I didn't integrate mine yet! I love the idea of having 2 separate numbers linked to the same phone that share the same voicemail lol. I pass out my gv number alot because I don't want certain people to have my regular number. #winning

In the Google Voice app there is a section in settings that says "Ask every time you call" But when I use it, and try to call someone, it lags so much... Like I dial several times and it still doesn't work. Then after like a minute it will call, but often times it I push the home button and the call exits. Then this repeats again but this time its slightly faster. I was wondering if anybody else experience this.

I have had no issues with Google voice and I have it prompt every call won't prompt if no area code.
Other than that works like a charm (I prefer it that way myself).
If you try the following out has a good shot at possibly correcting your issue if it is something general:
Try clearing your cache and dalvick cache then fix permissions (all found in recovery menus).
Reboot (will take a couple Min for cache Regen).
Then go to manage apps> voice and clear it's app cache.
Now, rerun voice to reset settings and try it out
(always have to go to settings and change voicemail provider twice as first time fails myself but it goes through second time. Skip that part in setup wizard though.)

Same here, I don't have any problems with GV.

what is the dalvick cache in the stock download mode (i think thats what its called)
No you have to use a non stock recovery menu or I believe apps from market may offer it though they Matt or may not require root.
Otherwise factory reset on stock phones will kill dalvick and normal cache as part of its process.
Though you will lose apps and settings with factory reset unlike using cwm or other recovery image to specifically wipe dalvick cache.
Same with fix permissions it is found in advanced menu of cwm recovery menu

I have a different issue. I also choose "ask every time you call" option and when I want do call someone and select google voice option, it reverts to my regular dial and phone call is made thru T-mobile network rather than google voice.
I tried to reboot, reinstall the app, same result. Google voice is not working for me.
Stock T-Mobile GSII.
Bump for this.

This is because of the tmobile id app remove it. It wont let you make any international calls either. The one problem is that when you make calls it will say calling via google voice and show a %(problem with all samsung phones) instead of an actual number no worries though it will still call through google voice.
Just try to clear the app cache first

You realize that data actually has NOTHING to do with google voice?? Unless you are using something like GrooveIP or the like , to route googlevoice calls via Gtalk, it still uses your cell network and minutes????
Google voice is a callout system, it dials a google phone number, and normally you don't get to see this, waits for the other end to ring, and then gives you the ring, and spoofs the Caller ID on the other end.
That is how Google Voice is handled on the phone, now on the PC whole different animal ....
BUT GV on the phone DOES and always has used your cell minutes ... Look it up , it is fact ....
(that statement was a little broad)
GV does use data for texts and voicemail, figured I should clarify , as well as account registration ....

I beg to differ. I know GV uses my cell phone minutes, and I'm willing to believe GV uses the T-mobile cell network during the call. But I'm certain GV needs a data connection to initiate the voice call. There's a shopping mall I go to regularly where I get a cell signal but no data signal, not even EDGE. When I try to dial out using GV, it hangs for 15-20 seconds, then an error message pops up saying there's no data connection found, and it asks if I want to connect the call using the cellular network. If I choose yes, the call is connected fine. I'm not sure why GV needs a data connection to initiate a call, but it definitely does.

just turned off all data on my phone and made a call, no data used ...
EDIT: But you are right to a point ... if you let your phone set for a couple of minutes, the GV login will expire, and the call will fail .. so yes we are both right, it does not need data for the call, but it does need data to verify your GV account ...

Yes, as long as you are using the cell phone number that is connected to the gv number. but if you make calls on gmail, then it won't use your t-mobile minutes.
and to answer the other question in regards to internet and gv. you will need to be connected to the internet in order to make a gv call.
Currently I have a google voice number and a regular Sprint number, I know when you create your google voice number you can do the integration where Google will use your current Sprint number, which sounds cool in theory, but I heard a lot of issues with doing this, the main one, not getting MMS anymore, and some missed VMs etc...
My question is, when I install the Google Voice app on the phone there is some option asking about integration, from the sounds of it, it seems like this is different than Google taking over your current number. Ideally what I want is to still have two different numbers, but I would like my Sprint number -and- my Google Voice number to both use the Google Voice Voicemail service. This is to work around some AOKP / AOSP issues with Sprint Visual Voicemail app that I've had.
So is this possible? Is this what that install option on the phone does? Once I do the integration can you unlink it?
I'm not sure about the setup you desire, but I think for Google Voice to handle voicemail for your Sprint number, you are going to need to do the integration.
I integrated shortly after the option became available. Google Voice itself will not handle MMS messages, but you will still receive them on the phone -- just not in the GV app. That works fine for me. I haven't had any issues with missing voicemails or otherwise.
Once you do the integration, you have a period of time to decide whether to keep it or not. After that time expires, your old Google Voice number is removed. I think that's 90 days.

Yes it is and this is my setup. Install the app and when you are setting it up it will ask you if you want to integrate, you will press next if so. If not and just want the regular google voice setup just press skip. Do this, press skip. Then link your google account, setup which calls you want google voice to handle and then finish..you're done.
Thanks ... I set it up and deleted the Sprint VVM app, don't have a way to test it though, tried calling my phone with google voice, but the phone doesn't ring, I'm guessing that's because I'm trying to call the phone GV is set to forward too... Oh well, looks like I'll just wait till someone calls

You should be able to call your cell # from your gv # even if the cell is set up as the forward # for GV...I do it all the time...
Just did it from the gmail dialer...

Yea tried that, for some reason the phone never rings when I call myself via chrome Google voice on the PC, txts do go through however, odd

You actually want to SKIP integration.
I have mine setup so that you can call my google voice # or Sprint # and both ring on my phone.
If you integrate (during the app setup) you turn your Sprint number into your GV #.
To fix this you need to login to google voice and there is a setting to (basically un-link) the GV # from your sprint #.
Uninstall and reinstall the app on the phone, this time skip integration.
Hope this helps.
if you want to keep google voice number and your sprint number separate than when you set up the google voice app skip the first option and voice mail integration and just get the text and call forwarded to your phone via gV..I like to keep them separate to keep business from personal

That's exactly what I use it for too.... Think I got it all setup, still can't call my sprint number from my google voice number in a browser however, don't know what's up with that, but think everything else is working.
So I use to use GVoice as my primary voicemail. I have all my calls to my mobile phone forward over. However, just today, I noticed that the *71+Gvoice number no longer works. I've tried other variations (*90, *91).
I simply get a prompt for the PIN to access my GVoice account. I've tried deactivating the phone on the website. No luck
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
I'm not sure exactly what you did.. to use Google Voice for voicemail I just enabled it in the app and in Android settings.. then I just checked the box in the app that makes them show up in the call log like normal non-Google Voice voicemails.
I may have misunderstood you, but either way good luck.
I know what I did.
The reason I wasn't able to forward my calls was because my Google Voice # my default Voicemail on my phone. (You can do that when you go to the phone app and then go to settings and then go to Voicemail set up). In order to have the call forwarding work, you have to make sure the default voicemail number on your phone is set to your MOBILE number.
Anyway, it works now.
Thanks!
I recently setup Google Voice Full on my S3, using my Sprint number. How exactly does it work in terms of receiving a phone call? Is it through data or voice? If I don’t have 3g or data is it going to come through? Or does it work just like stock and not on google voice? A few people have called and i never received the call, was it google voice? or would i have had the same issue without it? Do i need a data connection to receive calls now that i am going through google voice? I honestly just wanted it for visual voicemail, but i do enjoy the texts being online but i cant afford to miss calls because they dont come through. I do have call screening off as well.

All calls go through your cell connection (no data), but depending on your setup, texts and voicemail use data. The routing center was having issues last week due to Sandy in NYC so that could be why you had issues, but there could be other issues. You should try some testing by calling yourself to see how calling works and what sort of delay you may experience. I find that I often miss calls due to poor reception, but my gmail rings right away, it's the cell portion that can take several rings or miss the call completely.

Make sure you go onto a PC or Mac and type "Google voice" into address bar. Sign in and adjust setting accordingly. The settings on the PC end are the "full control" settings as your limited to what you can change through the phone application.
Good luck and don't fret, Google voice is a great program that I use daily.
