[Q] What can Sprint do? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can Sprint do anything more than cancel my warranty if they discover that I have rooted my EVO?
I heard rumors about how they would cancel your service all together and/or take the EVO and a couple other outrageous rumors that go into them suing you and all of this other crap..lol

i wouldnt worry about it.

Took my rooted evo into a sprint store last week running an aosp ROM, they didn't say a word to me about it.

The worst thing they can do is tag the line as rooted, or whatever they name the tag, and then it won't be applicable to a warranty or TEP.

Just had my evo shift running cm7 using fancy widget pro in my local sprint store while upgrading my wife to the evo and the sprint guy thought it was sense with adw launcher... DERP! ... needless to say, I thought it was funny as hell, my wife even chuckled when she saw him playing with my phone... most of the store reps aren't into, and/or overly educated in the rooting and modding stuff.

Don't worry about it unless you need service.

I have NEVER been given even a second look from showing Sprint employees a rooted phone. Rooting is not illegal, it is not even illegal in your contract. It WILL however, void your warranty. They are not able to send in your phone for repair if it's rooted, because if they do the sprint employee has to pay all of the fees.

And from what I was told at the Sprint store, even if they know it's rooted and refuse to fix/replace it, as long as you unroot and go back to stock they'll fix it. But those guys have always been super nice to me, so your experience could be different.
But no, they're not going to confiscate your Evo because it's rooted, shut off service, arrest or sue you. At worst they'll flag your account or refuse to fix it.

I was in the sprint store and my phone alliance rooted. The rep was showing me a case and I turned my screen on and was seeing how I liked the case. He didn't care I. Was rooted, even started talking about ROMS with me. I wouldn't worry

If you're having problems with it and insist that the rooting/ROM are not the cause, then we're not going to be so nice about it. It's like installing a custom part into a car, blowing up the engine, then arguing with the mechanic that it wasn't what you did that blew it up.
Sprint's policy is that if we suspect that root/ROM are causing the problem, we flash back to stock to see if it remedies it.

They can't cancel your service just cuz you rooted; unless you had some ungodly amount of roaming ect. Worse they can do is void your warranty on your phone, and if you need any service, it'll be out of pocket.

I am tech a sprint store. The official policy is to inform the customer that we can not service their phone until it has been returned to stock unrooted condition. However, 90% (making that number up, its probably more) of techs dont even know what "rooted" is or how to tell. Most will just assume you have some sort of home launcher app. I would not worry about. Worse case you have to unroot.

I just cracked the screen really bad on the front of my phone and it had previous scratches on the back. The camera lenses was even cracked a little.I was worried I would have to unroot and reroot a new replacement phone, but once I realized I didn't have insurance I didn't really care.
I brought my evo to a sprint store with a repair center and they told me 35$ to fix the screen. I agreed and when I got my phone back, it appears to be brand new except I still have cm7 and also my black splash screen!
They must have put my guts into a bricked phone or sumthing! The back case and the sides are flawless. I even had a couple white burnt marks on the LCD.
I was worried when I went to pick up the phone they would tack on extra repair fees but nope...
I quitely left the store as bad as I wanted to personally thank the tech..lol I mean he surely noticed the reverse splash screen when he repowered the phone but hell they are nerds too so they probably dig that ****.
I had a weird SD error about being the wrong format.. all I had to do though was re-insert the SD

I guess I dropped my phone. Even though it's in a case, it appears the side cracked and the right side buttons are exposed a bit.
I have the $7 insurance. What will most likely be asked of me if I take it to a tech?
It IS rooted. Would they even need to turn it on? If so, should I just put up the stock rom to appear stock?
Seems like they wouldn't have to dive too deep into my phone to repair/replace the "skin" of the phone.

as long as your not a **** to us we normally don't care, can't tell you what my tech's going to think tho, some of them are nazi's

[Q] Fixing scratched screen instore - rooted

So, I'm going go to Sprint to pay the 35 dollars to get my screen fixed. Would it be a big deal if they see that the phone has Cyanogen on it? Bought the phone from Radio Shack so it's not like they would tell them about it. xP
It probably depends on the store, but I took mine in the other day for a screwed up screen, and they fixed it. I know they rebooted it, because it was off when I gave it to them and on when I picked it up. So I know they saw the CyanogenMod boot screen. I'm sure other things may have tipped them off, too, but they didn't give me any trouble about it and let me sign up for their protection plan anyway.
Give it a shot. It's not like they're going to hold your phone ransom.
P.S. I did take my SD card out before I gave it to them.
As always, I recommend you unroot. We all know that rooting doesnt cause hardware malfunctions, or has nothing to do with your scratched screen. But it does void the warranty, and there is always the possibility they will catch it. I wouldnt take the chance.

Well if they do care, and they do catch it, they will permanently void your warranty, so every sprint store will see it and you will never get your phone fixed.
Maybe hold on to your battery while they fix it?
Or just take the steps to do a nandroid backup, then unroot it.
I never bother unrooting before having my phone serviced, I just do a nandroid backup and then install the RUU ROM version. Unless they boot into recovery, they can't tell and it's so much easier to restore when I get it back.
The guys at my sprint store are always fascinated with my phones when I bring them in. I had my Evo rooted before I even activated it, put CM 6.1 on it, tried to activate it but it wouldn't so I took it to the sprint store and they couldent figure it out. Brought it back home, flashed stock RUU and activated just fine, took it back and let the guys play around with CM 6.1 and they were asking how to root theirs.

Don't worry, you're rooted EVO will be just fine.. Now, if it were an iPhone and you were going to the * I have Mr job's hot dog up my azz* 'Genius Bar' .. that'd be a different story..
I Called and asked if they cared that my phone was rooted and they didn't. Doesn't sound like your going in under a warranty item your paying them to fix it. They generally only care about rooted if your having software issues. Like I said call the store DON'T give them your name talk to the tech and ask him what their policy is on rooted phones. it would seem to me your paying them to fix the screen it shouldn't matter if its rooted or not. Call them and ask it wont hurt.
If you have TEP on your phone does it still cost $35 to have your screen replaced. I have a tiny scratch on mine and I'm not sure it's worth $35 but if its free I might do it.

Nope with TEP it is free. Had my cracked camera lens fixed yesterday and they new it was rooted. Free with TEP. To be totally safe just nandroid and unroot.

Any cosmetic damage will not be covered under TEP for free you will have to pay the $35 to get the screen fixed. so if the screen just has a scratch they wont replace it for free they will make you pay the $35 fee
If you are going in for a scratched screen, I doubt they would care. Just nandroid backup and flash the stock RUU. However, for software issues, the stores and refurb people are soon to be asked to check in recovery for S-OFF and void your warranty.
Half those guys in the store probably have a rooted phone themselves.
The Sprint store I go to, 2 of the guys have rooted evos and another has a rooted samsung galaxy s. Maybe go in there beforehand and talk to some of them. They dont even care about rooting necessarily; its not like it screws the sales guys or anything.

No, I'm told that if the screen isn't broken, they won't fix the screen for just scratches.

My store, one rooted Evo, and one rooted Intercept. Here we don't care about it too much.... unless the customer is a straight up ass.
Store I use to work at, rooted Evo, rooted Epic, rooted Hero, but they don't do S&R there.

Ok so im having the loose usb port problem with my phone and im going to be sending it in for warranty exchange. One thing is i rooted my phone and the S-off shows up if you look. Also i never installed custom roms or anything so it looks like a normal evo if you flip through the menus and stuff. Superuser is also gone and no root apps or anything is on the phone just that it shows s-off if you look. So will sprint look for the s-off when i ship it back to them a charge me or anything?? im also running the OTA 2.3.3

Different stores have different standards for root. My store here in knoxville told me, of course after I've unrooted sadly enough, that they do not check for s on. They only look to see if you have a custom Rom. And especially if it is a hardware, the rep told me they don't normally care either way. If it is software related, they will not work on a device running a custom Rom.

I'm curious as to why you are sending it? Going to the store is easier. And also, if they don't fix rooted devices, all they can do is tell you no and send you away.
But personally I don't think they will check. Especially because your issue seems to be a major hardware issue.

well ill trying going there again but when i was there they treated me like i was stupid and must have taken my truck and ran my phone over millions of times just to break the small internal usb port! like really?? when i go what should i say? the first time i went i said my usb port is broken and they told be i abuse the phone as i expressed and there repair tech had left already.

I also have had bad experiences at Sprint stores. They all seem to treat you like you're dumb, but soemtimes you get lucky and get to speak with a nice respectful rep.
Here is what I would say/do.
First, do you have insurance? That is very important.
If you do, try this. But proceed with caution.
Take your micro usb cord and really jam up your slot. Like, really bend the attachment piece out of place.
Go in and tell the rep that your device does not charge properly and really needs repair or replaced. Ask nicely. I'm sure those peeps deal with jerks all day long. Prolly why they dish back out to some of us nice folks.
Show the repair tech the damage.
If you have insurance they will be more than happy to help you.
If you don't have insurance please please please do not take this route!!!

nope dont have insurance and the phone is only 7 months old and im having this problem and dont want to have to shell out mounds of cash to fix a pretty much brand new phone. wont sprint acknowledge this is a problem and replace it regardless?

Here is the deal. I've asked several different sprint reps about this over the phone as well as in the store.
Once you purhase your Evo, sprint gives you a 30 day warranty. Within 30 days, you are eligible to return phone, trade phones, or replace phone with a brand new one if there are manufacture defects.
After 30 days, your Sprint purchase warranty ends. But HTC also has a warranty. It is a one year limited warranty. It is mainly for defects and other various issues. Basically, you send your phone ($6 shipping handling) to HTC and they diagnose it. If it is manufacture defect, they either repair or send you a refurbished device without charge. If they decide it is user error or you damaged phone, they call or email you to inform you that you have two options. A. pay full price for repair and shipping back home. B. Pay 35$ fee to get phone back unrepaired.
The deal is this. Sprint offers you the service and guarantees you service and only the service. Your device was not made by sprint but by HTC, and being so, issues must be dealt with through HTC...unless you purchase insurance.
This is my advice to you. Call sprint. Ask them about insurance. It is $7 a month. Ask them how soon it takes affect after you purchase it. Usually is immediate. Then, in the next week or so, go to sprint store. Now you have insurance and they will deal with you and repair your phone right there and then. And if you want, later after your device is fixed, you cancel insurance.

My E4GT started smoking today

I was dropping my dad off at the airport in Canada and right when I cross the border we started smelling something like burning rubber. We drove 10 ft., paid the toll, and right after the smell got heavier and I saw smoke come from the phone. I immediately turned the phone off and checked for any burn marks, but found none. Pandora also froze and stopped playing music during this time. I had international roaming turned off, but I really hope Sprint and Samsung's way of preventing unwanted roaming doesn't involve combusting the phone. Yesterday, my entire screen turned yellow, out of the blue. I don't know if the two issues are related, but it seems like something's not right with my phone. The screen went back to normal after I turned it off and on, but that was an odd issue.
I just got home, re-flashed the stock EG30 kernel (I was using the stock EK02 kernel for about 2-3 days, it was during this time that I had the yellow screen and smoke), but I'm kind of paranoid about leaving the phone on. Since there's no physical damage to the phone, what are the chances that Sprint will replace my phone if I walk into a store? I leave my phone in the car when I go work out and I really don't want to walk out one day to see my car on fire.
Something tells me if you told sprint your phone started smoking and now doesn't work properly they would most likely replace it.

Alright, I flashed everything back to complete stock. Wiped all the data on my phone and packed it up. I'll stop by the Sprint store first thing tomorrow and see about getting it replaced. Should make for an interesting conversation, at the least.
Smoking Epic Touch is a recent upgrade which came via OTA. Many people complained our phones weren't exploding like the new iPhone 4S so Samsung threw a quick patch together.
I'll give it to Apple, they definitely beat Android to the punch on the newest smartphone feature, "explodiness."

Always look at battery temps if you are able. A quick one is Android Assistant. Ive hit 52C (125F) on my Epic and Epic Touch without smoking... so yours must've been quite a bit hotter.

There are no burn marks of any kind.
I just got back from the Sprint store and am unsatisfied with how things turned out. After waiting for 20-30 minutes I got a tech to look at the phone. After another 20 minutes, he came back and said that he took it apart and found no burn marks--which I don't disagree with since I turned the phone off at the first sign of smoke and checked for burn marks, myself. The next part is what had me scratching my head. He then proceeded to tell me that he 'cleaned' the phone and handed it back to me telling me that it's good to go and that I should "try to avoid making it hot". Haha, what? I was listening to Pandora with nothing else running on a stock (not overclocked) kernel, if the phone got hot enough to smoke from this what can I do that's not going to make it smoke again? This is where I became baffled. I just told you I saw the phone smoking yesterday and that the screen was acting up the day before that and you think using some rubbing alcohol or compressed air makes the phone safe to use again?
I asked to speak to the manager and after some talking she said that because I didn't have the extended warranty I'd need to pay $35 for a reconditioned phone. I declined as I expected them to just replace the phone.
I don't think that the manager or the tech were completely in the wrong to handle the situation the way that they did since there was no physical proof that the phone did indeed smoke. That being said, given that the phone showed no signs of physical damage (which the tech confirmed) and that it seemed to be working fine, wouldn't it have been better of them to save face and just replace my phone with no charge? It's entirely possible that I could be lying about the phone smoking, but if that were the case wouldn't something else be up? Why would I go out of my way to try and replace a phone that's working correctly? It's not like I wanted a different model phone, either. I just wanted a replacement GS2.
Sigh. I'm going to contact sprint customer support and explain the situation to them and see if they can give me a different answer. If that doesn't pan out I'll try contacting Samsung. Regardless, my opinion of Sprint has dropped a great deal.
EDIT: I just got off the phone with Sprint and the CSR waived the $35 fee. I'll pick up the replacement later today. Well, the CSR brought my opinion of Sprint right back up.

Honestly, you shouldn't be surprised by a $35 fee considering you don't have TEP.
You have to remember,Samsung manufactured the phone, you could always go through them. Sprint just simply acts as a convenient go-between for things like repairs. That 35 is more or less for the convenience of not having to go through the manufacturer (which is always a pain). You could also pay 8 a month for the same convenience...sounds fair to me ..

It seems fair to me as well. I pay it on both of my phones. When I had my Epic, I had a screen go bad and they not only replaced the screen, they Also replaced the keyboard and battery cover. It was like a brand new phone. I also got my Nexus wet and the camera broke. I called and they said to just bring it in. I don't know how it is when you don't pay the $8 a month but they always take care of me without any hassle. I will always pay it just because it makes things go so smooth if I have a problem

With regards to the replacement fee: I've been a cell phone user for close to a decade and I've never had a phone die on me, let alone begin smoking on me. So I have no prior experience dealing with replacing phones with manufacturer defects. After this experience though, I do have a new understanding of the process by which cell phones are replaced, so I won't be surprised by the fee the next time something like this happens and I go to a Sprint store, instead of the manufacturer, to remedy the situation.
Regardless, Sprint's over the phone customer service reps exceeded my expectations--they were friendly and quickly resolved the issue without making a big deal out of it, which I greatly appreciated.
I didn't get the replacement when I walked into the store, they told me they'd mail it to my house and that it'd arrive in about 2 business days. I'll post a final update after I receive the replacement.
I got the replacement re-certified phone today. It looks new, came in a generic box with no accessories. They didn't include a new battery, though. Which, I think, may have a chance of being the reason the phone was smoking in the first place.
Regardless, the phone seems to work fine. I'll use it completely stock for a few days to make sure everything's ok.

My ET4G smokes all the time but I think it has to do with the blazing fast 3G speeds of 0.8Mbps down and 0.2Mbps up...

I think I got screwed by Sprint, need advice

Friday night the charging port on my Evo decided to break. By break, I mean the OEM charger wont charge it, and the charger comes out really easily. Thankfully, I have a spare charger that works with it. So today I took it to a Sprint store and since I have full coverage they said they will fix it in about an hour. I come back to the store and I'm greeted with a contract and my phone (I was told I would be getting a replacement after the diagnosis but okay) and the contract stated that there was no physical damage and the charging port was fixed with solder. I signed and went on my merry way. I get home and went to see if it works, and they did absolutely nothing. I wasn't going to let this go so I called the store and demanded to know what was going on. The tech told me that; a). my phone is rooted. b). the screen has liquid damage (for the record I can't see anything) c). they can't replace it because of liquid damage and root.. I asked why I was lied to and told it was fixed. He said some bull**** answer to which I replied, "I SIGNED a contract and was told nothing was wrong, and that the phone was fixed" he hardly said a word. Here are my questions for you.
Will I be able to take it to a different store without issue? Is there a safe way to unroot? Don't want to risk bricking it. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks.

The charging port is a known issue with the OG I had mine replaced and it was fully rooted, if you have a copy of the contract take it to the store and ask for the manager, or you could try another store

I'd first try another Sprint store. Similar situation with me about having a rooted phone. I tried a different store and still no luck, so instead I returned the phone back to the stock ROM including the Spring Boot Animation and Stock HTC Evo 4G Splash Screen. After doing so, I tried again a week later and got it replaced. :good::laugh:

You said you signed a contract,what was it for?Did you read it?I believe its some kind of release,releasing sprint from having to fix your phone,because it was modded,which breaks the warranty and any kind of tech support for the phone.You signed it now,so they dont have to help you.Thats why they lied to you in the store,they didnt want any problems in front of the other customers.
I only read the part on the side near where it said it was fixed. It went along the lines of "There was no psychical damage found, the port has been fixed with solder" etc. Honestly I don't think I screwed myself by signing it but I don't know.

You could always go back and ask for a copy of what you signed, or at least inquire as to what exactly it was you signed. Never hurts to ask. If they give you any crap, ask for the store manager and explain things to him/her, but keep your cool and don't act like an a$$.

I would definitely try another store.
I had a 4G issue on in insured phone and unrooted it. Even though it worked out in the long run I was annoyed that I waited an hour to have the privilege to have a person open my phone to say ah yeah we can fix that and then required me to wait another 1 hour for another person to say ah yeah we do not fix 4G here even though the manager told me that they did. I called customer service during the 2nd hour and did not even know which sprint store was the repair facility and had no idea about the store that I was in untill I gave them the store number. They sent out my phone, I came back 3 days later and @2:00 per instructions, waited and then was told to wait some more since they were not sure if it was in or not.
Anyway I can understand a water issue but this idea that you have insurance and that they may or may not help and the stroke around is lame. They do not seem to have any issues collecting the money. It is also lame that they pull any policy issues since your contract is the back of your signed receipt and that does not include any of these contractual details.

[Q] The truth about being rooted and taking phone back to sprint for replacement.

I know the general consensus is that sprint wont help with bricks or replace a phone due to rooting/Modding issues... but are there any sprint employees on here who know of a loophole? I've heard some say that it is still covered in warranty. Any insight from those who have had experiences with this?

They should not hold it against you. They are supposed to treat it as if it were stock, and follow the same procedure as any other phone that is having issues. Some techs / service centers think they are the " Gods of Stock phones" and may try to make a big deal of your "rooted" or "tampered" with device. If they do give you a hard time, just leave with your device and go to another repair center. I think in the grand scheme of things, the percentage of customers who actually root and mod their devices is very small. It would be wise of you to at least have the service and repair coverage on your phone before you go in for replacement though. If you need it added PM me for more info...
I have had great experience with Sprint Tech's some of which are very familiar with rooting and the XDA forum. So did you brick your phone? Maybe it can be saved. I soft bricked mine but was able to boot into recovery and flash a stock unrooted rom and was able to re-root.

corporate policy states rooted phones are covered.
keep in mind this may not be the case at third party retailers and that any store manager can use their discretion to protect the company.....I.e. repeated hard bricks etc

Doesn't work too well if you only have one repair center for miles.
I usually just bring it back to them stock as that's all my repair center knows how to do anyways.

if you have insurance and you know that they are going to give you a problem then your better off just smashing it, or run it over with your car. I bought my last phone at best buy and didn't have root on it just adw (Evo LTE). When the screen broke I brought it in and they gave me a hard time telling me that it was rooted and they don't cover rooted phones. He went out of his way to tell me that they do cover jail broke iphones though.. I then had to get his supervisor over and show her that it was not rooted and asked her if it was store policy to get there customers a hard time. 30 f n days later I got my phone back with a new screen.

The insurance is very helpful, I've done this on multiple occasions. I just dont like to deal with them giving me a hard time

Nowadays when you deal with a broken phone you can just go online to Asurion cause they are the Insurance provider and they will ship you a refurbished phone and when you receive it you call them on the phone switch your IED # (or what ever it's called for Sprint since we dont have removable SIM cards) and then drop your busted one in the return shipping envelope and by then its done and you have your phone and it will just be shipped back to them to be disassembled. Then they will just try and salvage any parts they can for another refurbished device for another customer.
If its bricked ( as in won't boot up or similar) most techs won't know why, or how it got that way, so they should swap it out without a problem. Stock phones get bricked too. Recovering a bricked device can be time consuming and most likely a service center will not want, or have the knowledge, to take the time to save a device instead of exchanging it.
Running over or physically breaking your device and then doing an insurance claim through Sprints insurance provider (Asurion) is kind a silly thing to do (unless physical damage makes it necessary ) because you will be paying a deductible. A bricked non physically damaged unit can be swapped out at no charge if you have the Service and Repair coverage or TEP coverage.

I wasn't recommending physically breaking it either. I was just saying that if you aren't a good talker and are afraid of facing someone and don't want to do a face to face then go through asurion. I wouldn't have a problem doing so, 85% of people who work in customer service either don't have the know how or the balls to tell someone they are wrong. You would be amazed what you can get from people with confidence.

the problem I have with this is that physical damage claims through assurion require a deductable now. a hefty one on this phone.
when in doubt back up and unroot. it takes all of 5 minutes to do.
but as for the question at hand...they are supposed to be covered.

When I go into sprint I just simply unroot.. I did that with my epic 4G touch when I took it in.. Im trying to think how did the Rep even get my phone lol.. I just went in to get a note 2..But rooting came up and She was going on and on with how they don't cover rooted phones.. I was laughing inside due to the phone she was holding has been rooted so many times and it would be no way to tell

Basically meaning that if you come in with a totally bricked non bootable device and the boot loader shows device as modified we aren't allowed to do anything.
If the device works and is just having issues they are supposed to flash the stock software back to the phone as a resolution before doing an exchange.

interesting. I dont recall seeing that part previously.
of course though if a device doesn't boot...there really is no way to tell if it was rooted

Just asking did you even read THE VERY FIRST sentence of the post you quoted? I stated that I was NOT recommending to physically break it. Then you proceed to quote the post and say the problem you have with the stated method is physical damage claims have a deductible... ?
I've taken obviously rooted phones for repair and never had any issues. Matter of fact on a couple of occasions I was asked for help with rooting.

Sprint will not provide support for phones that are rooted or running 3rd party software (roms). That is to say that if you are having issues with data, apps or such and running a rooted rom you will be required to return the phone to stock before any is performed. They Justdon't havethe resources to support every software variety out there. That's not to say that mechanical failure is no longer covered. I do still recommend returning a phone to stock before bringing it into a repair center regardless of the issue. If this seems like too much trouble then perhaps rooting and customizing is not for you.
iPhones are a whole different animal however and any jail broken iPhone is no longer covered and employees have been instructed to flag the device. This is due to Apple.

schale01....the information you are posting is incorrect in regards to corporate repair stores. the policy was chamged last year to cover rooted phones
