Anybody having an issue with using Google's voice search, or the keyboard's speech-to-text feature?
When I first initialize these features, they don't seem to turn on the mic. I usually have to hit back, and try again. Seems like a software bug; a delay in the mic initialization.
I haven't noticed any issues, and I use them quite frequently. That said, I also don't pay much attention because it doesn't always work well for me, so I frequently need to try again. Will try to pay more attention as I use them.
XGunther... I'm also having this issue... thought it was only me... voice search doesn't work well anymore. Picks up half of what i say or goes to contacts.

Well, I was having the notorious "voice to text" issue with gingerbread. Not the Google Search issue. That was resolved by uninstalling then reinstalling the app.
I just flashed this mod from the MikMik.com forum. The " Stock_v2.3_HTC_IME_Revert-signed.zip". It instantly fixed the issue and haven't had any problems since. Both on my phone and my wife's.
Just thought I would share this for those of you that have had the same problems as me.

Thank you
Great...thank you.....going to try right now....most annoying thing with my phone recently
OK...spent the last hour over at MikMik and could not find file...Stock_v2.3_HTC_IME_Revert-signed.zip
could post link...
1. Boot into recovery.
2. Wiped cache & dalvik/cache.
3. Flashed zip from sdcard.
Put www in front of the link.

Thanks for the prompt response.....let me ask you...I've read that checking "Personalized Recongnition" in voice input settings will help or fix....have you tried that before...or know....???
I tried everything I could think of. As mentioned in the OP, the voice to text was an independent issue from the Google Search issue. So none of the Google Search solutions work for this problem.
I even unistalled then re-installed the voice search.apk. I noticed that the only time it didn't work was when I was using the keyboard then pressed the voice button. That is what gave me the idea of using a keyboard mod.

Thanks again for the response, advice and tips....I did download and flash the mod....and sorry to say no real difference...other than my only keyboard choice now is the sywipe....which is OK...it works perfectly at home, office and modest sound, but did not work today in the car....not at all...did work when I stopped, like at a light....my main use of the voice to text was "texting or emailing while driving"...ha-ha....apparently I shouldn't do that anyway.....I suppose a "real" fix like a modified mod will come along...by the way I have a Sprint EVO that's rooted with the latest Fresh Rom...hardware version 0003...

I may point out....to give light on this....muted mic background noise theory......I have a blueAnt bluetooth headset with "noise cancellation high" as an option.....in the car, the voice to text works OK with my blueant on....meaning...the"mic" doesn't hear the background noise....the new fancy bluetooth ear pieces work pretty good...
I am finding the built-in Voice Recognition to be very poor compared with my EVO 4G. Is there a way to improve this on the E4GT?
So, no way to train it?
Isn't that done on Google's end?

Please elaborate.
Do you mean that the training is done through my google account somehow?

Doesnt it ask you if you want to enable personalized voice recognition when you use it?

I think I may have seen something when I first ran it, but I canceled it, since I didn't have time. Now I can't find anything related in any of the settings. There are so many voice apps on this phone, I can't even figure out which one I should be looking at!

Well which one are you using? I just use google voice and never even bothered with the installed vlingo.
Try clearing data for google voice and see if it prompts you again. Also try speaking farther/closer, the mic can be different than you're used to.
Overall voice recognition has been OK for me but I hardly use it.
Go to settings/voice input and output and enable personalized recognition

I must say that my voice recognition with unnamed 2.0.1 is 95% accurate. Will keep an I out....
Thanks. I was able to enable personalization, but it's definitely not as accurate as my EVO 4G, especially when I'm in my car, where I need it the most. Seems like it may be more sensitive to road noise...

I think it depends quite a bit on the app. With Swype my voice recognition is maybe 50% if I'm being generous. With FlexT9 it's probably around 95%.
With Speaktoit it's probably on around 75%, Iris maybe 60-65%, Omega probably 80-90%, Voice Search probably 95-99% (it rarely misses unless there is a lot background noise.)
Voice Search is definitely much, much more accurate on my E4GT than it ever was on my EVO 4G.
Background:
- GSM Galaxy Nexus purchased from Play Store
- Unlocked & Rooted running stock 4.1.1
- on AT&T Network
- Came from an iPhone 4 -- some people still report their phones still try to text me as imessage, despite my having contacted AT&T repeatedly about this and going into apple and clearing out all my data as I've seen recommended online
- I have English (US) downloaded for voice typing and everywhere else it says I can download it.
With that out of the way. Whenever I'm on mobile data and I try to use Google Now, it'll hang on "initializing" for about 30 seconds, then it'll fail. When I retry, it usually works just fine and is quite quick. This problem happens intermittently, although it ALWAYS happens when I first use Google Now when I switch to mobile network.
As a frame of reference, I also have this problem with voice typing. Voice typing won't hang though, it just takes longer (at least 10 seconds) to boot up. Also, I have absolutely no issues on WiFi, other than the occasional issue of Google Now refusing to open a link even though I click it, but that's for another thread and another time.
What's going on here? How can I fix this? I really like using Google Now while driving to pick songs to listen to, but this is an incredible hassle. Thanks y'all
This is happening to me as well.... only difference is mine is NOT rooted, and I'm using NET10.
I also purchased my Galaxy Nexus Unlocked from the Play store.

Still having this issue. It's damned annoying. I believe it has something to do with Google trying to use online voice recognition but not getting a good enough signal and subsequently failing.
Why not just default to offline? We already have the language pack installed. Wish I could choose, so that way I can setup a Tasker profile to automatically default to offline when I'm away from Wifi.

Have this same issue too. Voice search was actually better/more reliable with ICS (hell even froyo). All I get is initializing. Annoying.
Solved!
Still no fix coming from Google, but at least one nice guy made a temp fix while they do it.
Look for "Voice Command" app on Google Play. Developer's name is IT-DEV-CROWD or code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=42178#c37
It worked for me, after trying a lot of different configurations.
I have been searching everywhere and have not found a solution to this, so I apologize if I missed it somewhere. As I've learned and have read from others, S-Voice is crap! Google Now is much MUCH better at voice recognition, particularly with names. The problem is, over bluetooth, my voice commands are only picked up by S-Voice. Google Now gets stuck at the "Initializing" then says "Didn't catch that" and closes. I've gotten it to intermittently work with Utter!, but I can't rely on that. Google Now works great over headphones or from the phone itself. It's just over Bluetooth when it doesn't work. After researching I'm almost convinced Samsung (or Vlingo) set it up that way; it's as if the mic is disabled with any app other than S-Voice. My question is, has anyone figured out how to get Google Now, or any other voice app for that matter, to be recognized over bluetooth?
I'm running stock JB with root (fyi, this was going on before I rooted). I know it'll probably work just fine if I flashed CM10, but I actually like the setup I have.
Edit: After looking more, I found this thread. I tested out turning off the "Media Audio" and Google Now works, but in further investigating when I click the button on my bluetooth, it's the voice dialer that pops up and that is what doesn't work, not Google Now. I can't see, to figure out how to get Google Now to show up and not voice dialer.
Edit 2: I forgot to mention I'm using a Motorola Roadster bluetooth speaker, but I don't think that's the problem.
Same issue here. Exists on every rom I try. Bluetooth in general is buggy as heel on the S3. It's really disappointing. I don't see many answers here on XDA...
Same here and I am on a new s2 ROM sbean v12 any fix would be great

First I usually just leave my GPS on all the time, I'm to distracted to remember to turn it off when Not using it. (Saying this in hopes its not the only answer to my issue)
I keep getting the (TOAST?) message Pop ups at the bottom of the screen saying "Failed to Update Location - No Signal"
Is there a way to prevent this message from appearing? Its usually when its oblivious I would not have signal due to being indoors.
I am an avid geocacher and use the GPS feature very frequently. On that Note I am very impressed with the accuracy of the GPS in these phones when outdoors.
When I am indoors I know there will be little if any signal to matter, and I do not need my phone to tell me so! I also do not need the pop ups if I am outside either as the apps i use will tell me signal strength of the Satellites.
Thanks!
also getting the messages with the GPS turned Off!!
These are getting annoying!!
Can anyone help me figure this out!
These messages are really driving me up the wall!!
Seems to me it's an app that's trying to access the gps. What apps do you have installed that might be accessing the gps? Are there settings in those individual apps that would cause this?

I have quite a few apps that would use the GPS for various features. Seems like more and more want to know where you are in the guise of trying to taylor the results to you better.
I am trying to isolate which ones. but with the apps not even in use and the GPS radio off I am still getting them...
I guess i'll try uninstalling each app one by one.
I hope this is not pre-mature....
But I do Believe I got it fixed. YEA!!!!
Not sure which app it was that was the problem, but I dumped several apps I really wasn't using.
I think it might have been the Weather Channel App. But I'm not certain.
Just glad the popup notices seem to be gone and the apps i dumped I wont miss.
Thanks....
Seems often times the mere fact of posting my problem once or twice seems to solve the issue even if the i get few or no replies.
