[Q] GPS Toast message Suppression [SOLVED] - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

First I usually just leave my GPS on all the time, I'm to distracted to remember to turn it off when Not using it. (Saying this in hopes its not the only answer to my issue)
I keep getting the (TOAST?) message Pop ups at the bottom of the screen saying "Failed to Update Location - No Signal"
Is there a way to prevent this message from appearing? Its usually when its oblivious I would not have signal due to being indoors.
I am an avid geocacher and use the GPS feature very frequently. On that Note I am very impressed with the accuracy of the GPS in these phones when outdoors.
When I am indoors I know there will be little if any signal to matter, and I do not need my phone to tell me so! I also do not need the pop ups if I am outside either as the apps i use will tell me signal strength of the Satellites.
Thanks!

also getting the messages with the GPS turned Off!!
These are getting annoying!!

Can anyone help me figure this out!
These messages are really driving me up the wall!!

Seems to me it's an app that's trying to access the gps. What apps do you have installed that might be accessing the gps? Are there settings in those individual apps that would cause this?

I have quite a few apps that would use the GPS for various features. Seems like more and more want to know where you are in the guise of trying to taylor the results to you better.
I am trying to isolate which ones. but with the apps not even in use and the GPS radio off I am still getting them...
I guess i'll try uninstalling each app one by one.

I hope this is not pre-mature....
But I do Believe I got it fixed. YEA!!!!
Not sure which app it was that was the problem, but I dumped several apps I really wasn't using.
I think it might have been the Weather Channel App. But I'm not certain.
Just glad the popup notices seem to be gone and the apps i dumped I wont miss.
Thanks....
Seems often times the mere fact of posting my problem once or twice seems to solve the issue even if the i get few or no replies.

[Q] Any apps that can enable GPS by text message?

Anyone know of anything? I've spent a good part of my day trying to find an alternative to Mobile Defense with no luck. I would rather not put all my information out there and txt messaging would be a good alternative to using an internet connection. SU access is no problem.
So you want to turn on your GPS by sending a text message to your phone?
check out the app on the market called wheres my droid, its free and does what your asking i found it last night so i am not sure if it does what it says or not but its worth checking out.

Yup, that way if I ever lose it somewhere I don't have to worry about the GPS being off. If that happens you're stuck going by what towers it's pinging and that will give you a 3-5 mile area.

Where's my Droid is what I was going to use to get it's location. Only thing is the GPS has to already be on for it to work.
ah i didnt know that, like i said have only had it since last night, but id say that with SU access you should be able to do anything so im sure someone with more knowledge then me can come up with an answer but i doubt that it cant be done.
I've read (and I could be wrong) that leaving GPS on all the time won't kill your battery like you'd think. It only uses resources when it's actually getting GPS data, which is signaled by the GPS icon in your notification bar. I've been leaving mine on all the time for weeks, and I still get 36+ hours of normal usage just like I did when I was clicking it off all the time except when I wanted to navigate something.
And then you could use Where's My Droid's GPS feature.
Try Lookout and see if it suits your needs.

[Q] How to disable "Store Location"?

Long story short, I installed Midnight's 3.3 Rom on my phone because I was tired of waiting on sprint.
While opening up apps and things to make sure everything was working, I opened my camera up and noticed immediately it was trying to get a GPS signal. Odd since I have GPS turned off within the phone settings, the camera automatically turns it on. Bothersome.
So I think, ok, I'll just turn off the "store location". Easy enough and there are many guides with a simply google.
But here's the kicker. The option to turn off "Store location" is no longer available.
So now we have a camera that automatically turns on GPS and imprints the location onto each picture, and no way to disable it. WTH. People take their privacy seriously and this is something that should not be missing.
How do I fix this?
Unfortunately, the only answer I have seen to this is to turn off gps when using the camera.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work.
As I said, the GPS was turned off in the phone, but the camera is either turning it on, or attempts to use the "mobile network" to get a position and will still tag any pictures with a location.
Mine doesn't.do that. When I have Gps off and open camera it wont turn it back on or do anything.

Try going to menu, settings, location & security, turn off use wireless networks and use gps satellites. That would probably do the trick.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Looks like that's the only way to stop it. have to shut down all location services, ie mobile networks and gps.
What a nuisance to have to have to toggle the services on and off depending on what I want to do when it would have been so much easier to just turn the feature off in the camera app.
I hope this get's fixed at some point.
Anyone got an update on disabling this? I'm surprised there weren't more threads about it when I did a search. It doesn't seem that most people care too much.
I read one guy that flashed the 2.1 camera back on, I don't know what features that removes but I would do it if I had a 2.1 camera apk still.
Currently I'm uploading to picasa and stripping the location values from there before I give them to anyone. It's rather annoying as I am using it to post pictures on a personal blog now.

GPS issues on Rogers note 2

Hi I have a data plan with Rogers so the a-gps should be picking location with maps or waze. I was driving this morning but the gps was searching the whole time. I was on 4g during this time. All 3 of the boxes under location services are checked.
Thanks for any ideas
Depends heavily on the position inside your car.
The closer to a window or the windscreen the better. Try holding it up to the drivers window for a few seconds and see if it locks on.
Even the best GPS isn't going to work if it's completely shielded from the satellites by the metal roof.

Should not have to restart your phone every time you want to use navigation.
I am having the same issue.
The GPS icon won't even display in the info bar without a restart.
Do you think this is a hardware or software issue ??
I notice about once a day on average that the gps icon will show up in the status bar. Sometimes it's only for a second or two and sometimes it's there for a couple of minutes. One time I saw it and it just seemed to last forever (I didn't time it but I'd guess 15-30 minutes).
I've gotten messages a few times about apps not being able to access location services. I don't use maps very much but I had it open the other day and it just froze up on me. No message about gps but I didn't keep the app open very long after it was obvious it wasn't going to work.
I'm on rogers in Ottawa.
Edit: Just played around in maps/navigation and gps flat out doesn't work. It was using cell tower triangulation and searching for gps the whole time. I had to turn on wifi to get an accurate location.

Anyone have a home made solution or is this a warranty issue?

So, after I posted last night I went out side and checked my GPS. Sitting on the steps infront of my building I conected to GPS in google maps and navigation right away - it worked like a charm.
Then I noticed it said "4G" instead of LTE in the status bar. I live downtown surrounded by buildings and I drop to "4G' on my front steps like 90% of the time. So, I get up and walk down the block and my LTE kicks in. Low and behold, I lost GPS. It only happened briefly but I lost the signal during the switch. Then I read that the note 2 only has a-GPS and lacks regular GPS. I don't know a ton about this stuff but I did read that connecting to GPS can sometimes be an issue if you only have a-GPS and your connection sucks.
Hopefully this is something that can be fixed with a software update. Who knows, maybe this is why those of us with the I317/I317M are the last ones to get the OTA update. I'm gonna call rogers today and let them know about the issue and see what they say. I don't wanna go through the hassle of exchanging my phone if every handset has this issue right now.
Are you using the Perseus kernel? If so GPS does not seem to work correctly regardless of which location provider is used. I reverted to stock and my GPS works.

My Rogers Note 2 has no problems with GPS at all. If you're all stock and have spotty connections, than it's your area. Tall buildings would probably hinder GPS fixes initially.

Right now I'm stock/unrooted and I intend to stay that way for the time being. I'll be heading to the mall later so I'll pay a visit to the Rogers store and Wireless Wave (awesome third party wireless store in Canada - they really know their ****) and see what they say.
I have the bell version. Just tested on lte. In my house locked on in 4 secs with no wifi.. Gps works great on my phone.

Sorry I took so long to respond but I got sucked in to the mall lol.
So, long story short. Nobody has any clue and the unusually clueless staff at the rogers store (casual Christmas employees) basically said I need to talk to Samsung cuz my 15 days are up. The guys at wireless wave hadn't heard anything about anybody having any issues with gps. Finally, I went to Telus and found someone who actually had a clue and she said it was the first she'd heard of it and actually recommended I check xda.
On my way home now and then I'll call rogers. I'm not hopeful about the outcome lol.
Stay tuned...

Hello folks,
Just an update .. I have been playing around with waze (free at the appstore) for the last day and a half and my gps has been flawless.
Our GPS issues could more then likely be with the actual Navigation app that comes pre installed.
By the way Waze seems to be very impressive I must admit :good:
I used something similar to that app posted.the ones I have is called gpstest.showing 0 satellites for me.like another poster said, should not have to restart the phone or flash firmware on it for GPS to work.it should work otb
Thanks for the feedback

Interesting... I've had this issue happen only once. Nothing I did would start a GPS search. I waited about 2 hours outdoors in a car. Once I restarted the phone, it had a lock on lots of sattelites within 10 sec.

Facebook keeps my gps on since yesterday

Hi!
Yesterday i've noticed a strange battery usage, with facebook using 35% of the battery.

I've noticed that it keeps my gps on and i don't know why, I've also made a tasker profile that turno off the gps when i'm using facebook and turn it on when i exit from the app.

Today the problem goes on, i also tried to kill the app or turn off the gps from the quick settings but they didn't work.
Facebook isn't been updated yesterday, so i don't know where the problem come from.

Uhh you try rebooting?
Uninstalling Facebook?
It's a ongoing bug, been having this problem as well for years now. I just disable GPS. I believe it's a issue with the app and not your phone.
I wonder what happened to CM's feature where they allowed it so you can prevent permissions that an app can access. Would be awesome to disable GPS functionality for Facebook.

It's not rogue. It's the facebook app, it's a bug within the facebook app. It doesn't care if you have GPS off.
If u had GPS on and then turned facebook on, then it messes up. If you turn off GPS, itll stay on your status bar and keep trying to obtain GPS info even though its disabled.
If gps is disabled and u turn facebook app on, its okay.
Uninstall it already, just use the mobile site, it's the same..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
R: Facebook keeps my gps on since yesterday
I write again in this topic because i find a workaround for this problem. Launching Google maps or another apps that uses GPS after closing Facebook seems to solve. It's a bit boring but useful.
There is a bug with GPS routines being locked up and not killed properly (or something like that) usually causing Google Maps to be high battery usage. Facebook at for me, with notifications on and 4 hr refresher uses ~3-4% battery. When I notice a kernel wakelock of gps_lock(something like that) it also correlates to a high Google Maps battery dragin with high awake and GPS time. A reboot fixes this, most other techniques don't.
Conclusion, Facebook app is fine and routinely uses less batter then Google+ when I keep sync enabled. It actually still uses less then G+ under this situation often. Just reboot if you notice rogue GPS issues.
Great thanks for the info

OGP Keeps automatically enabling location settings

I have no idea what the deal is with this phone right now and its destroying my battery life. I have done everything I know to do with no avail. My phone is CONSTANTLY searching for GPS satellites. If I disable my location settings, they automatically turn back on and resume searching for satellites. Has anyone had this happen? I've done everything but a factory reset.
let me guess, you cant disable data connection too?

Damn.... noticed earlier today it was doing that and looked for anything that could have turned it on. Never thought about the phone app. I ended up restarting my phone. Just dialed a number as a test and sure enough... the gps icon popped up. At least this time it quit on its own...
But why would the gps turn on when I make a phone call?
I seem to remember an updated privacy notification coming in the mail from AT&T a week or so ago. In it i believe there was mention of sharing "anonymous call location data." I think maybe I'll dig up that piece of mail and follow the instructions to "opt out."
Think I'm gonna test this by making a call from one of my kid's lines.

Good to know i'm not the only one. Its a shame because it wasn't doing it last week and now since I work in a metal building with already poor reception, its just shredding my battery life.
I feel sure that I have all apps that request location turned off. This is unrelated to my dialer app, as I only make one or two phone calls in a day.
Root and factory data reset seems to have resolved this for now. Still trying to figure out a cause.

As of today, it's not consistently turning on as it was yesterday but it for sure it turning on every time there is a phone call or a text message.
Was there any sort of update anyone is aware of? Maybe a system app was updated and caused this problem like this shows

So I realized that I recently turned OFF the wifi & mobile networks option inside of the Location settings a few days ago. I turned that back on and it does NOT do it any longer.
I also got on a chat with at&t tech support. He states they didnt have any other reports of this issue and nothing released recently should do this. He also mentioned that E911 uses the gps for location when you call 911. (I knew this.)
In any event, I asked him to open a case with engineering because I don't want it to kill my battery if I make or take a call while in a bldg.
Anyone seeing this should contact customer support to file a "complaint" so it is logged and gets attention.

Thanks for the tip.
This just hit me mid week too, I'm trying the above solution.

Carrieriq people! I don't know much about these phones, but have been learning slowly. I have the same issue, however I discovered carrieriq wake lock last week, and it makes me want to change to Verizon. Now I'm not sure, but I have that wake lock while the GPS is tweaking out. So I'm guessing that's what it is. I had to register just to post this, and I wish there was a way to get rid of it. I live in a Grey area, and prefer not to have all my calls and texts stored in a server for 60 days or whatever they claim to store the Information.

Damn carrierIQ... you are absolutely right. Installed one of those checker apps and its on there. (One of the downsides to not having a custom ROM.) But to have it really fire up like this, they must have flipped the switch on gathering "anonymous call location data" as was mentioned in a recent update to the privacy policy.
Installed Logging TestApp from an xda member ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17612559&postcount=110) and then the $1 key from the app store. Went thru the removal process and it no longer kicks on when I make a call.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only person experiencing this. Makes me feel better about the situation. Carrieriq has apparently been around for quote some time, however I hadn't heard of it because I was on am extended vacation. When I found out about it last week or whenever it was I did a lot of research on it. But a couple days ago when my GPS kept turning on out of nowhere while I had it off I got paranoid, and was scared they had me under investigation or something. If anyone else tries reggae Smith suggestion and is able to get rid of carrieriq. On this phone please post and let us know. I'm sure most of us out there don't want AT&T saving our texts and call history. Your browser history, and all that. Its a key logger that saves EVERYTHING that you do on your phone. At least that's my grasp on it. I'm wondering if getting rid of it the way reggie did even really delete it though. Is it possible to even get rid of it without flashing a custom room? Just because we may be able to get some peace of mind by not seeing the wake lock, is it really gone? I have only had Android for about 3 months, and managed to work from a atrix 2, to having 2 s3, one with severe wake lock issues. Drain my whole zero lemon battery overnight, to this ogp, which I dig. So this phone works great and one day carrier iq for 13 hours one day, so my friend Google gave me some insight, and bam, here we are. I have so many questions, but the capcha or whatever from my phone is irritating, so I will refrain from asking so many questions in different threads, that people will think I'm spamming. In the words of the great William currington "God is great, beer is good, and *****es are crazy!"
Anybody found any solution for this? There were some Google app updates hangout search may be forcing

I can confirm that this 1 dollar app has fixed the problem on my phone as well. E980.
Before trying that i tried to manually remove it, i was able to find two library files @ "/system/lib/" 1 - libiq_client.so && 2 - libiq_service.so
However I was unable to find the associated binary. I found a service lost the name. I installed cwm recovery, and then attempted to remove the library's at the risk of bricking, to invoke a app crash log and figure out where this :crying: binary was located. I added .bak to the end of the library names, and rebooted. I was greeted with a nice message "The android system has stopped working.", when I got to the homescreen, and then again when I attempted to make a call. But the phone worked fine and gps did not kick attempt to search. So I went and integrated the kernel logs and it showed android.iqd as the module that crashed, and an associated service. I couldn't find a full path to the binary and I don't know much about the android kernel yet, I'm only on my 2nd day being rooted on my 1st android device. If anyone could help me investigate this and figure out where the binary is located, and upload it I would be a very happy camper.
TLDR - After using Logging Test app and running remove IQ, i can rename or remove the library files with no issues! But I would still like to know more about the files/services associated.
Double post. Today my phone CIQ re-enabled itself, and started throwing the app crash message again "Android System Has Stopped Working.", because I have my CIQ library files re-named. Also note that it seems that I cannot RECEIVE text messages with these CIQ library files re-named. So DO NOT rename them.
Here is a link to the system_app_crash generated by renaming the library files.

I a very in-experienced android user, I need help finding where "com.carrieriq.iqagent.client.IQClient" is located, and where it is located in the phones startup. In linux there is RCXX.d files that contain startup and shut down procedures.
I live in the grey area so this GPS **** is driving me nuts. - THANKSh
