Anyone know of anything? I've spent a good part of my day trying to find an alternative to Mobile Defense with no luck. I would rather not put all my information out there and txt messaging would be a good alternative to using an internet connection. SU access is no problem.
So you want to turn on your GPS by sending a text message to your phone?
check out the app on the market called wheres my droid, its free and does what your asking i found it last night so i am not sure if it does what it says or not but its worth checking out.

Yup, that way if I ever lose it somewhere I don't have to worry about the GPS being off. If that happens you're stuck going by what towers it's pinging and that will give you a 3-5 mile area.

Where's my Droid is what I was going to use to get it's location. Only thing is the GPS has to already be on for it to work.
ah i didnt know that, like i said have only had it since last night, but id say that with SU access you should be able to do anything so im sure someone with more knowledge then me can come up with an answer but i doubt that it cant be done.
I've read (and I could be wrong) that leaving GPS on all the time won't kill your battery like you'd think. It only uses resources when it's actually getting GPS data, which is signaled by the GPS icon in your notification bar. I've been leaving mine on all the time for weeks, and I still get 36+ hours of normal usage just like I did when I was clicking it off all the time except when I wanted to navigate something.
And then you could use Where's My Droid's GPS feature.
Try Lookout and see if it suits your needs.

I have been asking this on Sprint forums for a while, I searched here and didn't really see this issue. It's a pretty concerning issue for me and I'm wondering if it's common because I know it would bother everyone.
My first post was basically saying I wasn't receiving push notifications, after doing some testing I posted this.
Copy/Paste from Sprint forums:
As a follow up:
I have noticed that the data doesn't come through the the 4g is idle.(Zzz)
I tested it with two applications:
Whatsapp, have a friend send me a message with 4g active, message came through. I had the same friend send me one with 4g in idle mode and the message does not come through at all, even if I browse the internet and make 4g idle again, the message will only come through after I open whatsapp again.
Beejive and eBuddy messanging apps: I opened my own account and tested from my PC with the same scenarios as before, I get the same results.
It seems my phone is losing a data connection all together when 4g goes into idle, now this can't be right can it?
Looks like the NS has the same issue:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/70874
This can't be right can it? I mean completely shut off my phones data connection when the 4g radio is sleeping? How does this make sense..
Anyone?

Kinda ... I believe it still works in the background for any app that might need internet connectivity. The time out sucks cause is so short but it is done, I believe, for the purpose of saving battery, like if no app is in need of data then it shuts down. Also, there are codes to make this time-out take longer to kick in, somewhere buried in these threads.
Thanks for the reply. Yea I saw some options, but raising the time out would probably kill my battery.
For now keeping on 3g seems to be my best bet..

Usually when a radio goes to sleep there is something called a rx interrupt that will wake it up when there is a packet received. This is based on my limited experience working with radios as an electrical engineering student. I don't know. how the specific wimax radio in this phone works.

Not sure how it works, but in honesty its very frustrating, the fact that it isn't a bigger deal on here makes me think it doesn't happen to all?

I hate to bump this again, but are the views people that don't have this issue at all?
I feel like this is a deal breaker
I get this all the time. When driving, I like to listen to shoutcast stations.
If I lose signal for more than like 10 seconds, the 4G idles and never reconnects unless I either toggle 4g off/on or tap a shoutcast station to wake the 4g back on. The 3G struggles to reconnect to the station usually and times out.
It is pretty irritating. My best friend always teases me for getting an android phone over his iPhone 4S PO$ on AT&T. lol

I'm keeping it on 3g right now, that should give you the same speeds of his 4s. I'll turn on 4g when I know I need it. So far 3g hasn't been slow enough for me to even have to turn it on.
I like this phone a lot and considered returning it but there isn't a phone as powerful so I decided to deal with it for now.
I went to sprint but the tech wasn't there, the counter guy tried to tell me it's the same with any 4g phone but I really don't think so. I think people would get rly pissy if messages didn't come in for hours.
I'm going to see the tech and test it with another 4g phone, if it doesn't happen I'll ask him to open a ticket and MAYBE that'll get something done.
there are a few tweaks that you can do in the epst menu that help out with the 4g connection going dormant. let me see if i can find the thread
I looked into setting the "sleep" time to 300 seconds, haven't done it yet but I'd be worried about it sucking my battery too fast.
I just feel it should work in sleep mode and I want to see what other sprint 4g phones do, if it's only with this phone I want to at least try to get it up to Sprint as a bug(event though most likely nothing will happen.
Someone on El13 said they didn't get this behavior in another thread.. I've tested it on stock EG30 and Ek20
Okay, so I'm not crazy. I thought I noticed this on both my OG Epic and the Touch. Mostly for me it manifests in not getting push notifications while on 4G in idle. That's been my main complaint with it. So I mostly don't use it, although I'm rarely anywhere with 4G anyway, so it's irrelevant.

Yep this is issue.. I'm leaving 4g off now and I'm not really bothered by that so it's not that big of a deal.. I was about to return the phone though because i was missing important messages through push notification.

I have not tried gtalk but I think it would have the same issue.
I have tried and all of them fail with the same issue:
Whatsapp
Gmail app (I don't use Samsungs stock email)
Beejive messenger
ebuddy messenger
let me know what you find.. I just can't believe this isn't a big bug - something tells me it might be Samsung's radios.
I went ahead and changed my idle time to 300... The phone doesn't go to zzz anymore so far so that should let me stay on 4g. That should give me 5 hours of the phone not going to sleep so during a normal day I shouldn't have this issue.. Maybe when I'm sleeping I won't see my notifications I will leave it on for now..
My DL speeds with 4g are like 7-8k so that's MUCh better than 3g for me. Also we'll see about battery drain.
Yes I have this problem. I also have the same issue with leaving WIFI on all the time. Everything is delayed unless you just used the phone.

I don't think I have it on wifi. Will test tonight.
John,
Another example of 'push' is using imap with gmail account. I use both k9 and maildroid using the imap connection method. When a message arrives at the google server it should 'push' it to our phones in a short turn around time frame. I've seen this vary from immediate to 45 minutes on the server end. The usage of 'pop' of course is the 'pull' method when polling is necessary.

300 in IdleSleep is actually 5 minutes, not 5 hours (I'm pretty sure the value is in seconds).
That being said, I haven't seen any push notification issues on 4G on EG30 or EL13. I regularly get Gtalk and Gmail notifications all the time while idle on 4G. The only thing that seems slow on push notification is the built in email client. But I'm not sure if that is a client or Hotmail issue. I wonder if your issue is region specific.
From what I read it is minutes.. But that could all be wrong I guess

Is there an app that will auto turn off 4g and turn it back on when I lose connection? I know the areas that I have 4g and turn it off when going out of those areas. However, there's a couple dead spots in town that kick me off when I'm driving around and it never reconnects by itself. I've tried editing the wimax settings, but none of them reconnect for me.
Thanks!
I bought, but never used, the profiles app. I don't know if it can be configured to do what you want. I think it might be able to do things based on the time of day or location. I'm sure someone that uses that app could tell you if rules could be made up with it to do what you're looking for.
That's a good idea. I have Tasker, but didn't think about that. I will look into that in the mean time. thanks
ok I think tasker is a little too advanced for me to figure out how to do that. I just use i for basic things so far hehe.

Benn running MOAR v2.2 for a few days and love it. But I've noticed something when wifi is turned on. If I'm on the wifi settings screen, I can see it scanning about every 5-6 seconds for new wifi signals, even though I'm signed into my home router with a good signal.
Network notification is turned off. I'm running the stock kernel.
Couldn't find anything in the moar thread about this.
Wondering if it's just me or if others also have this happening but just haven't noticed? Because you wouldn't know unless you're on the wifi settings screen with wifi turned on.
Can anyone verify this?
Any ideas on how to make it stop constantly scanning?

Well, this has nothing to do with your rom or kernel...thats just how the wifi is implemented. And you cant turn it off, unless you want to use wifi at all that is, this is to make sure you still have wifi access and to update the wifi networks that show up listed
You can make the scan interval longer by setting the "wifi_supplicant_scan_interval" (or something along those lines) to a higher value in your build.prop (located at /system/build.prop)

I have no idea what the deal is with this phone right now and its destroying my battery life. I have done everything I know to do with no avail. My phone is CONSTANTLY searching for GPS satellites. Damn.... noticed earlier today it was doing that and looked for anything that could have turned it on. Never thought about the phone app. I ended up restarting my phone. Just dialed a number as a test and sure enough... the gps icon popped up. At least this time it quit on its own...
But why would the gps turn on when I make a phone call?
I seem to remember an updated privacy notification coming in the mail from AT&T a week or so ago. In it i believe there was mention of sharing "anonymous call location data." I think maybe I'll dig up that piece of mail and follow the instructions to "opt out."
Think I'm gonna test this by making a call from one of my kid's lines.

Good to know i'm not the only one. Its a shame because it wasn't doing it last week and now since I work in a metal building with already poor reception, its just shredding my battery life.
I feel sure that I have all apps that request location turned off. This is unrelated to my dialer app, as I only make one or two phone calls in a day.
Root and factory data reset seems to have resolved this for now. Still trying to figure out a cause.

As of today, it's not consistently turning on as it was yesterday but it for sure it turning on every time there is a phone call or a text message.
Was there any sort of update anyone is aware of? Maybe a system app was updated and caused this problem like this shows

So I realized that I recently turned OFF the wifi & mobile networks option inside of the Location settings a few days ago. I turned that back on and it does NOT do it any longer.
I also got on a chat with at&t tech support. He states they didnt have any other reports of this issue and nothing released recently should do this. He also mentioned that E911 uses the gps for location when you call 911. (I knew this.)
In any event, I asked him to open a case with engineering because I don't want it to kill my battery if I make or take a call while in a bldg.
Anyone seeing this should contact customer support to file a "complaint" so it is logged and gets attention.
Anyone seen this on another phone that may be in use in their house?

Thanks for the tip.
This just hit me mid week too, I'm trying the above solution.
One piece exists!
Carrieriq people! I don't know much about these phones, but have been learning slowly. I have the same issue, however I discovered carrieriq wake lock last week, and it makes me want to change to Verizon. Now I'm not sure, but I have that wake lock while the GPS is tweaking out. So I'm guessing that's what it is. I had to register just to post this, and I wish there was a way to get rid of it. I live in a Grey area, and prefer not to have all my calls and texts stored in a server for 60 days or whatever they claim to store the Information.
Same issue started 2 days back. Hope to find any resolution

Damn carrierIQ... you are absolutely right. Installed one of those checker apps and its on there. (One of the downsides to not having a custom ROM.) But to have it really fire up like this, they must have flipped the switch on gathering "anonymous call location data" as was mentioned in a recent update to the privacy policy.
Installed Logging TestApp from an xda member ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17612559&postcount=110) and then the $1 key from the app store. Went thru the removal process and it no longer kicks on when I make a call.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only person experiencing this. Makes me feel better about the situation. Carrieriq has apparently been around for quote some time, however I hadn't heard of it because I was on am extended vacation. When I found out about it last week or whenever it was I did a lot of research on it. But a couple days ago when my GPS kept turning on out of nowhere while I had it off I got paranoid, and was scared they had me under investigation or something. If anyone else tries reggae Smith suggestion and is able to get rid of carrieriq. On this phone please post and let us know. I'm sure most of us out there don't want AT&T saving our texts and call history. Your browser history, and all that. Its a key logger that saves EVERYTHING that you do on your phone. At least that's my grasp on it. I'm wondering if getting rid of it the way reggie did even really delete it though. Is it possible to even get rid of it without flashing a custom room? Just because we may be able to get some peace of mind by not seeing the wake lock, is it really gone? I have only had Android for about 3 months, and managed to work from a atrix 2, to having 2 s3, one with severe wake lock issues. Drain my whole zero lemon battery overnight, to this ogp, which I dig. So this phone works great and one day carrier iq for 13 hours one day, so my friend Google gave me some insight, and bam, here we are. I have so many questions, but the capcha or whatever from my phone is irritating, so I will refrain from asking so many questions in different threads, that people will think I'm spamming. In the words of the great William currington "God is great, beer is good, and *****es are crazy!"
Anybody found any solution for this? There were some Google app updates hangout search may be forcing

I can confirm that this 1 dollar app has fixed the problem on my phone as well. E980.
Before trying that i tried to manually remove it, i was able to find two library files @ "/system/lib/" 1 - libiq_client.so && 2 - libiq_service.so
However I was unable to find the associated binary. I found a service lost the name. I installed cwm recovery, and then attempted to remove the library's at the risk of bricking, to invoke a app crash log and figure out where this :crying: binary was located. I added .bak to the end of the library names, and rebooted. I was greeted with a nice message "The android system has stopped working.", when I got to the homescreen, and then again when I attempted to make a call. But the phone worked fine and gps did not kick attempt to search. So I went and integrated the kernel logs and it showed android.iqd as the module that crashed, and an associated service. I couldn't find a full path to the binary and I don't know much about the android kernel yet, I'm only on my 2nd day being rooted on my 1st android device. If anyone could help me investigate this and figure out where the binary is located, and upload it I would be a very happy camper.
TLDR - After using Logging Test app and running remove IQ, i can rename or remove the library files with no issues! But I would still like to know more about the files/services associated.
Double post. Today my phone CIQ re-enabled itself, and started throwing the app crash message again "Android System Has Stopped Working.", because I have my CIQ library files re-named. Also note that it seems that I cannot RECEIVE text messages with these CIQ library files re-named. So DO NOT rename them.
Here is a link to the system_app_crash generated by renaming the library files.

I a very in-experienced android user, I need help finding where "com.carrieriq.iqagent.client.IQClient" is located, and where it is located in the phones startup. In linux there is RCXX.d files that contain startup and shut down procedures.
I live in the grey area so this GPS **** is driving me nuts. - THANKSh
Well kind of. Not a paranoid thing. But I got my G4 yesterday and it updated to MM. So I'll start by saying I'm not sure if this is a MM only problem. Anyway, Today I went to walmart did some grocery shopping. I get back out to the truck and look at my phone. (I should have screenshot it but didn't think to) I pull down the notification area and it says Walmart save money etc. So I click on it and it shows reviews with a split view map. I've never had a phone do this before. I'm using the same apps on this phone that I did on my S5. So I figure it's built into the phone. And my guess is it has something to do with google now cards. Even though I never set cards up. I do use google voice however. It's a little annoying seeing as it's using data without my express permission to gather information to show me. Much like how it also uses google now cards to show me ETA to get home even though once again I never set that up either. It assumes some place is where I work as well even though I don't have a set job site since I do odd jobs. Any ideas on this stuff guys? Being on prepaid I'm on a very limited data plan of 1GB per month.
I know somewhat of that feature. It goes by gps to where you been looks like mm has that option enabled cause on my lollipop (not upgrading to mm) i dont have it set up. I have somewhat of the things set up as for home and work. When gps is on it will tell me when i be at work if i left. The weather and when i get home. However you can turn the things off so it wont use your data. Turn off location when you are not useing it. I think you can turn off the things in google settings and you can turn them off in cards

Found the culprit. After digging around a little I remembered the accuweather thing that comes with the phone. Click the little drop down arrow and this is what I see. Telling me it will provide suggestion based on time of day and phone location.. So I deleted the widget but can't figure out how to disable it in the application manager. Can't find it. Can only find weather in there.
Ah i see i had that before thats the mart notice. I dont use it but i use this widget on my phone

So since you've removed the widget I had you don't get them notices? I'm hoping since I removed the widget that it won't show up anymore. I notice your temperature is about the same as mine. New castle Indiana by chance? But for my weather needs I'll be installing TWC. It has been my favorite for a while now. Just haven't gotten back around to installing it yet.
Turn off WiFi scanning and location. Both use data.

I have wifi scanning off. But You're right I have my GPS on I used to have an app that absolutely required it being on to be able to use. I still do have an app that requires it but I don't need to use it often. (instant radar). Best weather radar in my opinion. But yeah after I do my battery test today I'll be sure to turn off GPS as well. I'm comparing the battery time to my S5 with this MM update from yesterday since I heard a lot of people weren't happy with the battery. So the only real world test I could do for my self was to leave GPS on since I always had it on with my S5.

Ah the G4 has more than 1 accuweather widget? So it has the style I had on there plus the one you're using? I'd love to visit, Bet there is a lot of opportunity for nature photographing with the great camera on the G4.

Yep just checked through my widgets. I've got that one that you have as well as the smart notices. Hopefully deleting it worked. I'm very greedy when it comes to my data. I usually have 800mb left over each month. Too bad it doesn't roll over.

You can try this the app may not use data unless you are useing it i tried to restrict my chrome but i can still use it. I think the app wont use data if it tries to give you notifications so you can try to use the strict option on a single app ot click the buttons on the top right of your moble data settings and click restrict all

Thanks just did that. I had set a lot of other apps to restrict background data but didn't include that one for some reason that I can't remember. But have it blocked now.
