I'm going to London from the US soon and had my phone there the last time, but I want to make sure I have it setup right so I don't get charged up the wazooo. I don't care about making a call or two. Last time I was there I spent about $20.
Basically, if I recall, I turn off on accounts -> allow background data, auto-sync. On wifi -> mobile network data enabled off. Is there anything else?

I should hopefully be getting my desire this weekend but my tariff change wont come in to effect till next month and my current tariff only gets me free data usage in the evening and weekends.
So is it easy enough to configure the phone not to automatically update anything itself as I don't want to run up a expensive bill with it using data during the day.
Does the data widget (slider one with mobile under) just mean 3g connection? Or is this the one I need to just keep turned off during the day?
The mobile data widget disables any cellular data connections (2G or 3G don't really enter into it, both are cellular data connections).
Using the widget to turn "mobile" off means that the phone won't create a data connection, hence no charges.
hi, ill be going to turkey in a few days and i was wondering how to make sure no unwanted charges occur. now it seems t-mob charge the ridicules price of 7.50 per mb, and calls are 1.50 a min or sommin stupid like that.
If i stay in aeroplane mode but keep wifi on, it would be safe right? is there anything else i gota watch out for,
and lastly does anybody know if T-mob offer a unlimited data plan for a month aboard or something, i cant find it on-line or over the phone
Just turn off the 'Data Roaming' option or perhaps even better turn off the 'Mobile Network' option.
I've never heard of a unlimited data plan for abroad use.
You can buy 'aboard boosters' from T-mobile (UK) such as Euro Boosters with so many minutes for a certain cost.
If you really need unlimited data then probably best to use a local SIM card over there (providing you've unlocked your phone of course)
I went to the States last month and just switched off Data Roaming, and Always on data networks. Phone still works, just can't use anything that uses the net.
kool, where do i turn data roming off and always on data networks, also will wifi work without these options
Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks.
Both options are in there (Data Roaming should be at the top, with Always On at the bottom).
Wireless will work fine without either of these options enabled.
I would suggest getting an app like NetCounter so you can keep an eye on what's going in/out - though nothing should be going through the network if both options are disabled.
cheers guys
Hey TurkzZ,
I was in France recently and I must say, TMO were very responsible.
When I arrived in France, they sent me a text advising how much it would cost to make and receive calls and texts and how much per MB data (this was a little confusing, because I couldn't use data anyway unless I bought a booster, see below).
That said, I opted for a weeks data for £5 but it wasn't quite enough and I topped up twice for £1. Should have bought £10 in the first place.
Basically, you can't use data until you pay for it (get redirected to a payment portal if you try and surf for example) and when you use up that booster, you can't use any more data until you get another booster. Pretty hard to get caught out.
All in all, with the boosters and a couple of calls/texts here and there, my bill was over by about £15.
Enjoy the weather in Turkey
BTW, calls in France were £0.35 to make and £0.15 to receive if I remember correctly.
Only thing to watch out is the euro text/call boosters tmob offer you in the text message. I always presumed that they are a one off, but i found out that once you order one through sms, tmob put them on your account as a montly option!! I had to call customer services to have them removed from my account the next month ...
Cheers guys , I'm in turkey now , un checked those 2 options and also selected aeroplane mode, and on WiFi now, what is strange is that I can access YouTube which is blocked here wid the YouTube app, and even.mote interesting , I can download Iplayer programs via myplayer app lol
Hello everyone
We will be moving close to the border soon and I noticed our devices (my wife also has a Desire Z, though it is stock) tend to connect to services from across the border.
Now having turned off data roaming, this isn't that big of a deal but roaming calls still cost more this way AND I can't use navigation because data roaming is deactivated.
Now I know I can set my preferred service provider, but can I also lock it (meaning: turn off roaming completely) so I have to manually allow roaming to accur when, and only when, I truly need it?
If you go to Wireless and networking settings you can select "mobile networks", the same screen you select dataroaming...
you can select your mobile provider I think that when you select Search for network and you select one network it won't automatically select a new one if your connection gets low.
That's what I thought, too, but in reality, it didn't really work. Although I have received a hint that it might only work if mobile data was deactivated at that moment. I'll try this thursday... let's see what happens.
I hope I'm posting this in the proper category.
Namely, I'll be leaving my home country very soon and travel abroad and I will most certainly need to occasionally do SSH connection to my server over 3G, which leads me to data roaming. Now, data roaming at my carrier is super expensive, so I was wondering if there is a way to completely disable data while in roaming, but still be able to connect to 3G and EDGE when I explicitly tell the phone to do so (eg. for SSHing somewhere or checking in on Foursquare, refreshing Twitter timeline, etc).
I saw that there's an option to uncheck Data Roaming in Wireless & Network settings, but I would say that will completely turn off all data connections and NOT allow me to manually and explicitly initiate data connections. Is that true? Is there a way to make it connect to 3G only when I explicitly tell it to while remaining disconnected otherwise?
Allow all phone data settings on. Download APNdroid or similar (APN on off widget) from the market. Open app and set any preferences, then add widget to home screen. Activate by tapping on off on (or something like that). Green on, red off.
All it does is rename the APN settings so it "fails" to connect.

Your quite correct in that it will stop data connections, but why not turn it back on when you want to connect?, the other possibly cheaper option would be to, as long as your phone is not networked locked, buy a local PAYG sim with data and use that in your phone when you want to use 3G
Buying local sim would be wise option....

A local prepaid SIM is a good idea, far cheaper than using data roaming.
Additionally, to avoid background data usage, you might want to install Droidwall and allow only the SSH app to connect to the internet.

Because I want only that one application to use the data connection when I want it to, without all other apps opening their own connections for sync and other stuff, since I have a lot of apps and accounts that sync in certain periods of time (this is an Android device, after all ).

Exactly what I needed! Many thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it out!
Hi all!
So I'm on holidays in the US, and coming from Europe I don't want my data to be activated, since i would have to pay an unreasonable amount of money per day. So i deactivated the roaming option in the settings menu, but the data was on after an hour, which resulted in me paying 24h of data.
So to avoid this to happen again, i deactivated mobile data altogether, but the data keeps turning on!! So i paid another 24h. Now i switched on plane mode, but then i cannot get sms or anything.
Does anyone have this issue? Or how to fix it?
In the attached screenshot, you can see how mobile data and roaming are deactivated, but the H+ is still active in the corner.
Thanks!
Did you try restarting the phone with the phone in airplane mode and without airplane mode?
The thing is if I do that and checked if it worked i might be charged again. It was just in case someone had the same problem and knew the solution
