[Q] Rom Development for Android - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now not to start off like a fanboy or wannabe. But I have looked up to everyone on xda-developers that have helped me in the past and I have also looked up to Rom Developers. I want to start Rom Developing and wanted to start a group of some sort to help me. I already have big idea for this Rom Developing stuff, just need people to work with to help me make our Roms better. If you know a bit about Rom Developing and would like to help, contact me here so we can get started on a Rom. This is were all the best start! Let's make ourselves better as well.
Goals: I wan to work with Stock MIUI Roms such as "CarpeNoctum" and make them faster, lighter, smoother, thus making them stable and reliable.

[Q] Do you use a azrael rom???

UPDATE!! Ric is back on board and actively working on Azrael 4.0!!! THIS IS INDEED GREAT NEWS! I am going to leave this thread open just to continue showing my support for his work and would appreciate it greatly if every Azrael user continues to show support here in case he ever needs to be reminded again. Thanks to all that contributed in persuading him to continue developing this awesome Rom!
So Ricsim78 has recently posted in his thread for the Azrael Rom that due to too many complaints to his Rom that he may or may not end up hanging up the towel for good and ending the development of his Roms. Personally this saddens me. So i ask here.....Do you use any of the Azrael ROMS?? Did you use one and switched due to issues?? Should he continue to build his ROMS??? Read his original post .......

I am going to make a few different versions of Azrael X Final, keep this thread updated as progress is made, but I think I have been shown the way by the community here.
I appreciate all the people who do support me. I am forever grateful but I am pretty disgusted by the acts of some people on here. There are lots of ROM options here, so I am sure there is a good new one to pick up.
Nothing lasts forever; maybe my decision will reverse, maybe not. But as it stands, I begin work on one final release of Azrael X. It will be called just that and may well be my last public release of my ROMS."""""
Some may have issues with his Rom but i have not experienced any of these issue nor have any of the other 15+ HTC EVO's that I have flashed his Rom to. Plenty have requested that he use a different base for his Rom. I disagree with this as well. His Rom is plenty fast and plenty stable and if you have problems with how he makes his stuff.....try something else or learn how to develop your self. Its that simple. There are PLENTY of other options to chose from. If your like me and your incapable of developing your own stuff....take what you cant get and thank these fantastic developers that do everything they can to make our good phones the best phones they can be.
IF YOU VOTE ANYTHING OTHER THAN YES, PLEASE DO US ALL A FAVOR AND POST YOUR REASONS HERE. PLEASE LIST ANY BUGS YOU EXPERIENCED. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU THAT PARTICIPATE.

yea you said it. 10 fold.
Yess!!! Thats what im talkin about!!! Everyone show your support for this amazing rom here and maybe, just maybe we can convince him all his hard work has not been in vain!!!! (cross your fingers azrael lovers!!) thanks guys!!
Ok so I flashed my Evo about a month ago and I tried a few different ROMs and I have been on Az's for the whole time. I love it and won't flash anyone else's ROMs now. Please don't go Az.
Ric should do what makes him happy. I did however vote for how much I like his work though and the selfish part of me wants him to keep making them. If he were to ask me, which he hasn't of course, I would say to always listen with an open mind, but not to ever worry or sweat about what the negative folks have to say and concentrate instead on enjoying the process of his work and the majority of us who enjoy it. Here's to you Ric, thanks for everything that you've done so far, I will appreciate it and you no matter what.
I personally don't use his ROMS but I do think losing a Dev from the community because of a few bad apples is poor form. It's too bad he feels this way and I think this thread is an awesome show of support!
I love his roms. I personally love the way sense looks and he keeps that look. Its snappy reliable and awesome on battery life. I hate animations and this rom has the best ones I've ever seen. I use the phone heavily and at 11pm it still has 40% on the stock battery. Everyone says there rom has great battery life and they don't but AZs Rom does. I would like him to continue his dev work but if he must go then that's that. And we should remember his awesome work.

I have been a supporter since the day I rooted my phone. I have had no issues at all and definitely hope he changes his mind. Excellent work and thanks for your passion.
It is my ROM of choice and now use it exclusively.
I love the X rom...
I think the trouble most people have is from the different kernels. I run his rom with the stock #15 kernel. It's the only one that flies on my Evo. Any other kernel sucks!
I use it, and its the only rom ive had NO problems with. Id be very disappointed to see the development of this rom stop.
Az I used 3 other roms before flashing yours, and yours is the one that I liked best. I tried a few of the other roms from the devs that I liked on my hero but I didn't like theirs as much as I love yours. So if you do decide to go please add me to your mailing list. I would be honored.
P.S. I check every day to see if you have posted an updated rom.
Take care my friend

for me is the best so far, even convinced my co-workers to give it a try, and they love it too
I have never used Azrael's ROM, but that's just because I've been stuck on a different ROM for a while now, and haven't strayed from it yet. It saddens me to hear of this, possibly losing a dev from the community. I love having so many options for different ROMs, and I find them all to be great, and have different tweaks and features that fit different scenarios. I have never heard anything bad about Azrael's ROM, just the oppositte actually, people praising it. I am not up to par on the type of comments people were saying about it, that prompted his (for free!!!) decision, but I find that terrible. People should show nothing but respect and support for the devs here, and the hard work that they put in. And as far as I know, it seems that most of the devs here work together, and trade info and what not. I hope that people step up and show him support so that his decision can be reversed.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and that is what the thread voting and rating system is intended for. BUT there is a very small handful of members here that need to learn to show some respect! Life isn't perfect and neither is each and every custom ROM. Those who down rate a ROM thread because they have some technical difficulties are morons!
I have yet to see a ROM thread where the dev does not ask the community to please report any issues you find. So how can anybody be so dumb and down rate just for spite?
Rick, I can totally understand how you must feel to put a ton of pride and effort into this nice custom ROM to have it all crushed by a few idiots who can't see past their own selfish moronic ego's. It's a shame these members can't somehow disappear and take their ungrateful selves far from this community and never come back! They will surely continue this childish behavior on other ROM threads. This community would be much much better off without this small handful of ungrateful [email protected][email protected]$!!! Please forgive my French...
Do what you think is best Rick, I totally understand. My advice is to sleep on it a few days and start over... there's always new things coming down the pipes and mabe one day you'll feel better about your much appreciated work. Don't let a couple of dumb punks distract you. We all know your work is at the very top of the list without a doubt. Those couple of spiteful members casting bad votes means nothing to this community. Believe me we ALL know you are the real deal when it comes to your work and awesome support!
Yes and i have never had a problem with his Roms. Hope he never leaves. Rick you rule!
a few words
I've been a longtime Lurker who does not post anything but I had to give this man some much needed appreciation. Hands down this Rom is the best that I have tried here. Its silky smooth while maintaining speed and awesome battery life. I really hope he decides to keep developing but I cant fault him for choosing not to. By the way I just donated to you ric. Hope this helps out the coffee fund.
The ONLY issue I had with his 3.0 rom was the tethering. Not the hotspot but the Android tethering. To this day Im not to sure what happened with it as it just quit on me one day. I didnt blame the rom itself if people read my posts, but I also know I sure as hell wouldnt vote someone down (whatever that is actually lol).
My little brother was talked into (by me), into using his 3.1 and he loves it,cept the android tethering is not working for him either. So other then the tethering issues (which im now leaning more towards rom issue, as im now running Mik and its working again flawlessly), his works been pretty awesome.

[FLAME] Wtf do people have againt custom roms?!?

I don't get it. Noobs love stock for some reason. They call custom roms buggy and glitchy whilst they are on a non overclocked, battery eating, sense 2.1 ROM.
We must CONVERT them to the custom ROM side. I dont make roms for people to call them buggy without even. looking at them.
Feel free to share your views and flame here. The wildfire s modorator doesn't really care anyway.
Okay, I'll bite.
First of all, I'm not sure if "noobs love stock" is entirely accurate.
From what I've directly seen/heard, I'm actually experiencing the opposite. Newbs are coming out of the woodwork with their (perfectly adequate) WFS and saying "Hey, I heard there's a custom ROM for this thing! That sounds like hacking! Hacking is cool! Therefore, I want it!"
I don't think a lot of the "noobs" (I hate that word... we were all NOOBS at one point) fully understand what they will gain (and, more importantly, LOSE) by upgrading to a custom ROM. I don't think there's any custom ROM out there right now that makes my phone objectively better. Instead, what you get are custom ROMs that do a, b, and c better, but in the meantime they break features x, y, and z. It's up to you, the user, to decide if you can live with the trade-off and what features are honestly the most important to you.
You say, "They call custom roms buggy and glitchy" but I think that's because, generally, they are! Of the 15+ ROMs I've tested, a lot were simply buggy or glitchy. Almost all had at least 1 minor problem with them. In the end, it comes down to "can I live with this bug?"
You're right - no one should call your (or any) ROM "buggy" if they haven't actually tried it. That's just stupid. But I'm getting the impression that isn't the actual core of your complaint. You want to see everyone convert to a custom ROM. Well, I'm on board with that... but you gotta understand: the stock ROM is actually quite good. I will grant that it comes with too much bloatware. But the Sense UI is simply stunning and stable. Almost everyone I asked says they miss it (after upgrading to a custom ROM) and they simply "learn to live without it"). I don't want to learn to live without it. I want my Sense experience, minus all the bloatware, stable, and a decent battery life.
You complain about the stock battery life? But I find custom ROMs MUCH worse at handling the battery than the stock (all other settings being equal). Dunno why this is, but it just is.
In a nutshell, users will just have to decide for themselves.
If you create a grid, like I did (sorry I don't have the link handy, but it's on XDA somewhere) and compare each ROM side by side, one thing will become immediately obvious to you: while each ROM may excel in 1 or 2 features, no one ROM excels in ALL features. So, you're back to the user having to make a decision: what do I value more? And any time she has to do that, she won't be 100% satisfied with a custom ROM because she'll know, in the back of her mind, what perfectly useful function she had to give up in order to move to the new custom ROM.
If you need specifics, I'll give you specifics. But for now, I promise you that each custom ROM does at least one thing worse than stock.

p.s.
Lest I be regarded as "ungrateful", I just want to make it clear:
I am currently running a custom ROM and I am extremely grateful for all the chefs who cook us up these yummy things. I've expressed my gratitude several times across several threads. That, however, is not the issue here. The issue is that I still find myself having to learn to live with a deficit (or two) after upgrading to a custom ROM, as described in my above post.
I totally agree with "Tigger31337"...
btw I am using stock 2.3.5 which I have modified a little for my needs with some scripts and I am really happy with it...stock is stable for sure, I hope you new sense3.5 rom gets to where the stock is because i would like to support you and to use the better sense
Kind Regards
I think users who run custom roms are doing so because they like to tinker, not because they make their phones that much better.
I run CM7 but its got a bug with the camera flash and therefore makes it perhaps less better than stock, but I flashed it because this stuff interests me.
The majority of users want a phone to make calls, text and run a few apps and stock does that. Most users have no idea their phones can run custom roms and even less idea how to flash a rom.
As for bloatware, custom roms are guilty of this as well. Does CM7 need to come with a torch app built in :-0

I see what you are talking about with bloatware. That's why I keep my stuff from .sense in /data/app where possible, so users can uninstall if they wish.
Users can uninstall bloatware once their phone is rooted.
Hi, users can uninstall bloatware once rooted but I think its not too healthy for the system as often users don't know what is safe to remove.
Much better to put apps that can be uninstalled without causing any system instability into /data/app as mentioned above. That's a really good thing to do as it allows the user to know what they can safely uninstall.

My opinion
I also do love custom ROMs especially CM7 with its awesome settings and theme chooser.
Also debloated sense ROMs are good (who wants peep, stocks, all the crap from htc).
Now my opinion on the WFSDEV Team
Do they work together? I don't think so
The ACE team is a real team, they do massive work, CM9 and other great ROMS
The chat is empty, and never worked well
No CM9, will it ever come
I asked for help with a cwm zip (week ago), the team didn't even look at it
Massive flood of sense 3.5 ROMS, based on the port of 1 person.
This will make it very clear for users which rom to choose of course
I hope it will get better soon if not, I'm going to leave the DEV team, because now, not a proud member.

very true. we need to re-think this. cm9 is a mess, as only one dev is making breakthroughs and he's gone on holiday or something.

I agree. I am making a "dev lounge" a.k.a. "job management system" however it needs work.

Let the haters hate and let the dev's develop

I personally don't see any problems when it comes to cooked roms. These people shared their work with utmost dedication and I certainly appreciate it. It would boost SGY development in many aspects for one is the UI (user experience), the designs and themes are also part of development. Developing is not an easy task, bearing in mind the fluidity of your designs, the critical response of the rom's performance and the originality, the x-factor for a Rom's success.
You will see the value of your own work if it will last for a long time, and if people across the whole world will take time to install it to their phone. In that sense, I think Amal Das's creations is on the right track. I will not question the fact that he has contributed a lot in terms of ROM design choices. Look at his posts, there are tons of designs to choose from! at that perspective I will give a double thumbs up! (you can make a unified thread for your designs, instead of making a multiple threads, it will be more efficient)
If all of us will be hostile against people who want to share, there will be no point for such a forum to exist. He shared, you as user and a member of this forum can constructively criticize it as expected to a mature individual.
Sooner or later developers, contributors, themers will move on to other devices, so let us appreciate what is available for us right now.
Kudos for the maker of these roms, for making this community alive!
PS. Amal Das, please edit your first page. I do not see any chobits elements in your rom you may have overlooked the "chobits revamped ui" lol. It is okay to copy anything from my thread, atleast edit it to perfectly suit your rom's description. Thanks and more power!

HCFroyd has a point our phone will not be developed forever. I'm guessing after the realease of the S III we don't have much time left. Lets try and do as much as we can while we can!"
i have another phone with me here,
a HTC Wizard one of the first windows mobile smartphones which was released mid 2007- early 2008,
they have a forum here in xda but sad to say the last development for a custom rom was on 2010,
so the forum is now but a ghost land with less than 1 post per 5 days or so with no devs left working on the device,
my point is a time will come that SGY will also be like HTC wizard,
turn into a old end device and the forum will be like a ghost town,
we do realize this and the best thing we can do it to just have fun with our device,
develop things for the sake of sharing ideas to others, collaborating minds of millions of SGY owners,
i love my phone and its the first phone i bought with my first salary so it has a sentimental value
cheers to all SGY owners
Exactly..I dont see the point in arguing with cooked/themed stuff..different people have various choices..some people like MIUI,some ICS, and some stock etc..whats wrong in that? i don't have problem with themed rom as long as they give proper credit to original creator. i never ask credit for my work but someone did. the new trend in our forum, a lot new themed rom don't give credit to original creator. but that's only 'small' problem. bigger problem is a lot of new rom released with too much bug. if you experience user, you could solve that problem easily. but how about someone new ? please remember this forum become reference for other forum or non member. today i see in other forum, someone asking for help because his phone brick after flash themed custom rom from this forum.
we couldn't expect those wannabe devs to solve their rom problems. personally I doubt if they're know how to properly customize a rom. most of them only replace the apps, and change the ui_print stuff in updater script. in most cases they don't even know how to modify an apk since they modify their systemUI and framework-res via UOT kitchen. this will surely brings problems to new member or inexperienced one here.
It will surely come to an end, but the S3 will not kick the Y out of xda. It would need pretty long legs to kick a low-end device.

Well, that's why we have the support general section, faq and q &a.. The bugs I saw in the threads are very minor and mostly fcs which are mostly accompanied by fixes from the dev.. The bricking errors are mostly due to wrong method of flashing and no thread in dev section causes bricks otherwise.. Regarding the credit thing, yeah some people may not give proper credit but they didn't just post the content as it is right? They did some work and stuff but it's respect that matters and they won't get it by modding stuff.. But I really appreciate the way amal das cooked and added the themes, apps.. It surely involves some definite time and effort and remember something is better than nothing.. We must appreciate their effort to upload and share them for nothing !

You have a good point hitme!
as for me I do not see anything wrong when people want to share something. its just that other users tend to envy what they made and then criticize the creator/moder/chef.
(that's what I noticed here at SGY forum)
BUT THIS CRITICISM DOES NOT EXIST ON ANY OTHER FORUMS. i wonder why?

I totally agree on this. And if these people uses custom ROMS as base ROM, themed it and added some apps that totally boost the UI and not the performance or to cut it short decorated the rom instead of adding new features or tweaks, why not release it as an OPTIONAL THEME UPDATE or OPTIONAL APP PACKAGE and not NEW DEV ROM thing?
Don't get me wrong but I do appreciate hard work. Themeing is developing but please keep it in mind that SKINNING is different from BUILDING. Skinning is theming and building means you start from STOCK ROM WITH NO TWEAKS and you DEVELOP/ADD/MODIFY the ROM to have new features -and that being true, I see no reason for a THEMED CUSTOM ROM to be LABELED ROM DEV NEW.
I have experience in building a custom rom, I have a Motorola A1200 Ming way back and what I did is I integrated A1600 and A1800 features to A1200 firmware. I didn't use and custom rom available and gave it a new look.
My point is, you don't label a rom whose base is a custom as *developed or *new. That sucks! How come you use others ROM and themed it + added some apps? and call it developed? It should be skinned or themed or optional update. You got to be kidding to think you developed it when you skinned it. And that number of thanks you get prolongs your day dreaming of being a developer when you are just a skinner/themer.
NOTE:
The above statement may not be comfortable for your eyes to read but hey, it's true. If you're no developer, Well this post sucks. Truth hurts.
We need a Steve Jobs in SGY..
He was not a developer, but a motivator
steve 'jobs' (lol)
please don't think that me (or some other user) hate the rom development. nope...we only get tired of those who claimed themself as a dev but in reality know almost nothing in rom development.
1. these people potentially risk other user for bricking their device.
2. you can't expect a good rom from them. in most cases you'll only get a half assed rom with a lot of bug.
I was saying that statement to ensure that we get a rom with good quality from a real dev. i'm sorry if this words might sound harsh.

You do have a point, man. They needn't be called devs, but they are making something! You can't just expect someone to just create a very good rom like chobits or creeds. They have to start from the base, making small mods, and when they become good at it, then they can start making bigger mods, and so on. You won't understand the studies of a university unless you've completed the one of school.

you chose wrong example
i am not too 'old' in this forum, but afair i was already here when chobits released. it's not themed rom and it's relatively stable even in first release. nobody can stop you from making/learning custom rom, but release to forum is another matter. if the mod only themes (which a lot new dev did) we already have themes sub forum. and if it's only fix small problem in other custom rom, why not just create patch. and is it really hard to says if he/she make it based other rom ?
i don't claim if i am a dev, but i do share some of my small modifications in this forum. before i share something, i need 2-4 days (in my spare time) to review my modification, make sure every know problems already fixed. most of my mod is low level so one mistake can brick your phone forever. i do wild and crazy thing with my own device. but when i decide to share it, i do very very carefully, because if i did something wrong it will effect someone else phone. few days ago i almost pull back my shared mod because someone report my mod make his phone restart. fortunately i can fix it.

learning and sharing is a different things...if they already have some skill about theming stuff they could share their work as a theme.
1. it has less risk for brick
2. easier for them to upload
3. easier to apply to any rom
please don't see me as someone who doesn't like rom developer. I don't mind if anyone ask me about rom development. I have made a thread about customizing a rom and anyone could use that as a starting point in their study. I've also helped several user developing their rom and some of them have published their rom in this forum. believe me, I want to see more rom developer in this forum. but I don't want to see a half assed rom with a lot of bug and complains from other user.
PS: if you consider about reputation stuff you'll understand that I'm saying this for their good. anyone will see someone who comes with a half assed rom as a fake dev. I don't wanna see that happen (again) to anyone here. if they could restrain themself a little bit until they could make a good rom, they could get better response and more appreciation of their work.
Question
@all
can you please tell us which roms and their developer, that you do not consider as part of SGY development? So we can clearly differentiate it from "real" development to just cooked or themed..
Thanks!

SO,I want the latest and greatest custom upgrades

I can't do this techy stuff so I will sub the work out to someone else. As the title says,I want to improve my Epic 4g Touch. Things I have had done are flashing the phone for Pageplus and getting SU/Root Explorer,as well as JB 4.1.2 GB27. Would like to spice it up a notch or two. What could I be doing with this phone to bring it to a new updated custom platform? I hear cyanogen being referred to often but I don't know.If I keep updating the phone it would be almost like getting a new phone each time without having to get one. Thanks
Well...now you should find some Roms that are suited towards the style you are looking for.
There are a lot of awesome developers in our forums. Too many to list....but you are correct in saying that the changing of custom Roms does give the feel of a new device.
Just take the time to make sure you read all the OP of whichever you decide to do.
This particular ROM is my current daily...very stable and very cust.
Good luck and enjoy the forum...its awesome here

I am liking Project X black and blue V2 myself.
Overall not a bad rom, with decent battery life if you load the comodose 3 mod.
I did have to switch out the dialer though. The included one was just not my thing.
Also the older gmail here is very nice to go with it.
This is just a bit too close to a Best ROM type thread. If you wish to improve your device, read, read, read, read again, learn, read some more, and then make a decision based on the information you've gathered.
We do not allow Best ROM threads because everyone has a differing experience and opinion, what works great for me may not for you...

Request thread for Developers to see and Consider.

Hello, our Amazing XDA Developers.
Hoping you have already planned something for Realme X, For the people still considering if they want to buy this phone or not, and if there was gonna be a Good XDA developer support on this phone.
Why don't you reveal here what you are working on/plan to work on?
Also, Normal Users why don't you post in replies, what you want developers to develop the most.
The aim of this thread is to make the developers aware about what are the most demanded apps/kernels/ROMs/Bootloading screen, etc that users want if they choose to fulfill the wishes of users.
Hoping you can make something awesome for us, Also, Please Keep 4GB Ram version in your mind the most please, since it's current performance and multitasking has a lot of room to improve.
My Personal Requests are-
Bootloader Unlocking Process details
TWRP(obviously)
Lineage OS Custom Rom
AOSP Custom Rom
Pixel Experience ROM
Magisk Modules for Bootloader screens(Not a Priority)
Thank you for giving your time to this thread.
Looking forward to your responses.
Thank you
