without root, or even with it, I'm not sure this is possible, you can most likely find an app in the market that will tell you quickly what you are on.. or maybe even a widget from the market that says it. Also what is umts?
It's possible there are no indicators outside of CDMA technologies for whatever reason.
UMTS is a high speed GSM technology.

I am using mine in Qatar, same type network, and mine gets all of those icons in the status
Are you on a data plan? If you aren't connected to data, then you won't see those
i will try next week to enable a data plan and try... i will keep you informed...

This is a good point. These are data connection indicators afterall. My old Eris, being unregistered at this point, doesn't show a 3G connection despite the 3G radio being connected because it's not registered for data.

Do you guys know if it is possible to get an indicator that shows separate signal strengths for 1X and 3G bands like the old school phones? Like this:

Thanks for the quick reply, but im not talking about the 1x icon fix. I want the indicator that shows both at the same time like in the pic. Im running Syndicate.

Why would you want both? I mean no offense but it just doesn't seem logical to me.

No real reason just think it looks cool lol. Just wondering if it's possible. I would donate for such a request being done, of course.

Its not possible. The code for 1x and 3g is set to show what the status your radio is in.

Theres an app on the market called Real Signal, when enabled it shows Green and Red Signal bars in the status bar. Green is for CDMA 1xRTT Voice and Red is for EVDO Data. So it breaks it down to your Voice and Data signals. That is the closest i have found.

Seems like if that app can do it, it should technically be possible to make the native signal display split the two signal types up as well – but what do I know.
All I know is I'm happy just knowing the signal strength of whatever connection is currently active (and having the 1x icon fix).
Sure it'd be neat to see both, but in practice it'd just take extra space in the notification bar.
Hello all,
I have a dumb question, and I have searched google for the question pertaining to ICS, my phone/ROM, and also on my rom's thread here on XDA. It's tricky because the question is not a universally phrased question..
So I have my G2 on tmobile's prepaid plan and want to transition into it for a few weeks while I am still on my postpaid att plan with my fam. Thus I want to watch my G2 to see what the service/cell reception/coverage is around my area. Is it 4G, 3G, 2G?
How can I tell?? I went into the settings for ICS and found how to change the service indicator to numbers or an icon, but that doesnt show what speed (dont want to run around running speedtest, although I guess I could). Is there an app I should add or something that would track my service patterns (thats a cool idea actually)?
Thanks!
PS- I am extremely impressed with the 'outdated' G2 and its smoothness in handling ICS (Thanks dev)
Well one way to distinguish between 2G/3G areas easily is adding the following line to your build.prop (which is in /system/build.prop):
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1
What that does is basically just show a 3G prefix on your stock lockscreen and the pulldown statusbar, when you're in a 3G area.
After you've written that on the build.prop you just have to reboot for it to take effect.
Thanks although that's french to me. I don't what you are talking, sorry I'm a newb. I can root and flash but that's over my head. I did notice if I turn off wifi it shows me an "H" but its quite small so ill try to be more aware going forward.
So it seems the coverage thing is either an "h" or "e" ... its a tmobile phone too

There is an indicator icon (as you mentioned) next to your signal strength on the status bar.
H - HSPA+/4G
3G - 3G
E - Edge/2G
If you're looking for a way to track, over time, how much is spent in a particular service, I don't know of any way to do that. There might be an application out there to keep track of it all.

Thank you. Thats what Im looking for. Problem is its super faint and very hard to see I think. Also it doesnt appear to show when wifi is connected ive noticed.
I like to use a network info app :

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
In my indicator it'll show 3G or H respectively.
setting : ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1 will pretty much always show 3G regardless if you got HSDPA going on so that setting is purely cosmetic. i.e.: "adds the 3G prefix to the operator name."
mainly had to make sure the following were set in my build property if using T-Mobile USA using T-Mobile G2 phone with the supporting radio bands:
ro.ril.hsxpa=3 (though there's no documentation to show that anything other than 0/1/2 is supported, I assume if anything higher than 2 is set it'll just default to 2)
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=10 (for ~14mbit/sec download)
ro.ril.hsupa.category=6 (for ~5mbit/sec upload)
HSDPA+ would be the 14mbit/sec, speed where as HSDPA would be the 7.2mbit as shown in my screenshot, I don't have too many areas in town where I actually see the H+ show up.
That looks great- exactly what I am looking for. I will check it out.
Okay, I'm pretty sure this was just a fluke because I cannot find how to do it anymore, but I thought it was pretty neat. When I went into call settings and networks, it let me choose between a list of LTE, Maritime (3g), and 2g. I have read that there is a setting in the hidden network settings that deals with this, but have been unable to change the settings. Has anyone else run into this settings menu? I was just playing around with the phone, and there it was, now it is no more. Maybe. For those that have no LTE coverage, I bet this could really help with battery life.

That's what I thought it was, too. But, unless I'm being totally oblivious to something, it does not show up there anymore. The only list to show up is the APN list which I'm able to populate with full network settings, but what I'm talking about was the ability to switch between LTE, 3G, and 2G on the fly. I wish I would have gotten a screen shot. Can you do a screen shot of what you are talking about?

Nope. I don't have that. I have the lt28at, btw. Is that the international version? That's not even the screen that I got when I got into those settings. Mine was not a pop-up, it was another screen of its own. It listed "LTE" (not sure if it had 4G next to it or not) then it had 2 different "Maritime 3g" settings, then 2g. I remember this specifically because I thought the word Maritime being in there was odd. My network settings page is attached.

You do not need root for surfing without wifi. You only need network data enabled and internet connection from your mobile carrier.
And what kind of instruction do you need ?
You just need mobile data enabled. (settings - connection tab - mobile data)
That's it.
You need the same to surf when not in a call also.
No
Short Answer is No. Not until Sprint which I am assuming is your carrier enables VoLTE. We do not have two antennas like GS4, GS3 and a few other sprints phones. Hope that Helps

Thanks. Now i wish i wouldv just stayed with my s3
It might depend on what variant and carrier you use, but I do believe it is possible on the G3. I just gave a call and mobile data a try simultaneously on my unlocked UK 16GB D855 (on Three UK) and it worked. Signal is kinda weak at my house which may explain the data speeds.

OK I am very curious if i can disable all network modes except gsm or just select only gsm. Now a lot of you are wondering why and pulling out your hair, well in my area there are a lot of places that I get 1 bar of any other network, but if i manually force my phones over to gsm I get full bars and great reception, even in buildings and basements that everyone considers dead spots. So yes there is a legit reason to this and I'm very curious if this can easily be done with the us model?
thanks

You can force the radio to GSM only using the hidden menu..
You can get to this menu by typing in the following code in the phone dialer : *#*#4636#*#*
I always forget the code, so I use an app called Network Switcher which does the exact same thing as the code..
The second SIM slot is GSM voice+text only. So if you ever want to turn off data, I s'pose you could just disable SIM 1 if you had a second one in.
