Does it matter which firmware runs on which phone?
For example, running LT15i firmware on LT15a, or LT15a firmware on LT15i?
We know the radio ability is different on both phones, would that cause an issue?
Does using a wrong FW disable some radio abilities?

Yes it does matter. I think you can still use it because they have the same GSM bands.
BUT you cannot use 3G or HSPA if you use the wrong firmware. LT15i and LT15a have different 3G bands. Better check what your network provider is utilizing.
Or check the cellphone shops whether they sell the i type or the a type.
LT15i = UMTS HSPA 900 (Band VIII), 2100 (Band I)
LT15a = UMTS HSPA 800 (Band VI), 850 (Band V), 1900 (Band II),
2100 (Band I)
The UMTS bands are provided in the white paper of arc at SE developer world site.
i have a rogers branded LT15A and i flashed it with the generic firmware for the LT15i and 3g works fine. so far so good. when i used to have the x10 it ran fine with either version of software. i am not saying that there couldnt be an issue, just not one that i have had that i can directly attribute to using the international software instead of the north american one

I think firmware interchangeability is a one way deal for the LT15i and the LT15a, in the sense that you can flash an LT15i ROM on your LT15a device and still use 3G (I'm on rogers, and 3G works), but flashing a LT15a ROM onto a LT15i will not give you the 3G bands of the LT15a
I also flashed my Rogers LT15a with the LT15i 2.3.3 World Generic firmware
All running fine

Are you sure about this?
I just too, like the above two posters, flashed a world generic LT15i to LT15a and working fine on Rogers.
According to Wiki, rogers UMTS is operating on 850 and 1900 bands, both not supported by LT15i.
Is there something hidden in the drivers etc?

This is somewhat confusing. I used Xperia X8 before going to Xperia arc.
They mentioned that flashing the i or a version incorrectly will make 3G connection not possible (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875688)
I didn't even try to flash the a version before because my network provider is using the 2100 MHz band for UMTS (2100 frequency is present in the two versions)
I've checked Rogers wireless and noted that the network is indeed using 850/1900 bands for UMTS. Kinda weird that LT15i firmware is working.
It shouldn't matter what firmware you flash onto your phone.
Since v2.1, all firmwares have included the software portion of both "i" and "a" radios meaning you can run any firmware on any phone. (However, this DOESN'T mean that flashing an "i" firmware onto an "a" phone will give it "i"-frequency 3G when in an "i" coverage zone and vice versa. The hardware is what determines what 3G frequencies the phone is capable of handling and that is fixed.)
It's how people are already flashing the latest 2.3.3 update on North American arcs.
Make sure that you enter in your APN settings correctly once flashed. I've never had issue running any ROM and getting 3G data connectivity.

you beat me to it. you are correct
Do you think that this would work for a Neo (MT15i) phone too?
(would be a bless as f/w patches are more quickly available for the arc)
Just bought Xperia arc LT15A but when I check phone version it says LT15I. So i called the seller and im told that it was flashed with LT15I firmware thats why its showing as LT15I. Is that possible that it will show as LT15i? Box shows lt15a by the way and im a little confuse. Also what are the settings for APN I will be using it with Rogers network (data/mms). Thanks in advance.

Yep, flashing a LT15i firmware on a LT15a will change the name under "about". This is normal and should not affect the functionality of your phone. Rogers APN below:

APN: rogers-core-appl1.apn

Thanks pre I cant wait to add tweaks and apps to this phone.

Hi guys...just curious if anyone here have bought the phone from O2? Would love to know if the one u get is R800a or R800at rather than R800i (which is most probably not the case rite?)? I'm travelling to the US a lot and the network interoperability is the issue here. Would love to have the phone coz I could kill a lot of time during flights and stuff but 3G is a real issue here coz my trip is usually for work so e-mail/web is ultimately unavoidable -_-''
Unless I'm mistaken, the R800a and R800at (not even released anywhere), are sold only in North America - in Canada or on eBay. I think everywhere else gets the R800i. And the R800i is definitely not 3G capable in the US. It will only work on EDGE.
O2 Uk/IE/GER etc will be the R800i be it generic or with their own bloatware.
as stated R800a and R800at are US/Canada. Not sure what the model in Asian markets is.
European market is always an i with Sony Ericsson

R800x is Verizon Wireless, 'a' is always Americas with SE and at is AT&T device.
Still not sure of model number in Asia (Japan) market
Fwiw, the "AT&T" variant they gave out at Google I/O is the R800a.
Which of course doesn't mean the AT&T consumer model will be anything similar if/when such a thing exists.

I know this is an old forum, but.......
can anybody tell me the differences between the models? well i suppose i dont want all the differences; the main thing i want to know is:
will the digitizer for an r800i work for and r800a? i have a strong feeling it will and a little bit of evidence that shows that it should, but i thought i would ask to see if anybody else would know. thanks.

Someone can probably back me up or correct me but I think really the only difference between the models is just the region they come from(The r800x is a Verizon Wireless version and it is stock android vs the Sony skinned one the r800i or r800a has)

Hello everyone!!
I have a R800i with these networks: UMTS HSPA 900 (Band VIII), 2100 (Band I) GSM GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900
Unfortunately I have just seen that the country that I am now, supports only 850 (Band V) and 1900 (Band II). I see that these are supported on R800a, but unfortunately I do not have that model, only R800i. Is there a way I can get it to work on these bands? Maybe flashing the radio or something like that? Can you please let me know your thoughts on this?
Thanks for your help!
Are you in the states? I have the same question since I have att service. I just want to know if 3G will work with a R800i. I've read on these forums not to get the R800i if you want 3g but Amazon only carries the R800i. SIGH~~~~
You have to flash R800a firmware.

The firmwares are in a thread I made in the development section. Link in my signature. Go grab one and try it out.
Also, make sure you have the right APN settings.
You could also try using the 36 baseband, which is hanging around somewhere in the forums.

LT18a vs LT18i - HSDPA 2100 band
Hi friends,
I am looking to buy SE Arc S in USA and want its 3G/HSDPA feature to work in India also. Mostly internet surfing I will do in India and seldom in USA.
HSDPA bands supported by both models is as below:
HSDPA 900 / 2100 - LT18i
HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 / 800 - LT18a
Both LT18a and LT18i operate on 2100 band for HSDPA. Is there any form of difference when Sony claims support for band 2100 HSDPA in LT18a vs LT18i OR are the hardware radio/frequency & firmware/driver exactly same for 2100 band in both models.
In India 3G/HSDPA runs on 2100 band. I am confused which one to go for.
Please provide inputs.
Thanks in Advance

Thanks. Are you using SE Arc S LT18a in India on 2100 band.
I know that LT18a will work well in USA on 2100 HSPA band, and in India also we have 3G running on 2100 band. So will in my case LT18a run on 3G seemlessly well in India as well?
In the development thread DooMLoRD mentioned that the phone comes in two versions. There seems to be confilicting info about this. I have seen sites say it is quad band HSDPA and there is not 2 different models and only the lt26i. I would like to import to the USA and use on ATT 3g. It looks like the lt26i will work on att 3g. Below is the info listed in the development section of the site.
Model number:
The Xperia S has model number as LT26 and has two models LT26i and LT26a. They differ in the spectrum of frequencies supported for 3G/WCDMA http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_s-4369.php
LT26i - HSDPA 900 / 2100
LT26a - HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100
The items passing the fcc was the LT26i and it was listed at quad band UMTS/HSDPA
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas...alledFromFrame=N&application_id=917709&fcc_id
It is also mentioned in this engadget article
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/27/sony-xperia-s-jogs-past-the-fcc-carrying-plenty-of-atandt-t-mobi/
I've pre-ordered the Xperia S LT26i from here. If you scroll down a bit and switch to the specification tab you'll see this:
GSM/GPRS Yes
Frequencies 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
Speed GPRS up to 86kbps, EDGE up to 237 kbps
3G/HSPA Yes
Frequencies 850/900/1900/2100 MHz
Speed HSDPA Up to 14.4Mbps, HSUPA Up to 5.8Mbps

It seems like it supports both frequencies... It'll surly work in Europe right? I live in Israel using Cellcom, I hope it'll work fine.
I am wondering the same thing too!
I live in Canada and I want to get this phone but I know Canada will be the last to get it.
Is the ' i ' version going to work for me in Canada?
Please help!
Thank you.
check the Xperia S whitepaper
http://dl-www.sonymobile.com/cws/download/1/105/035/2/1327908899/Xperia_S_WP_2.pdf

2100 (Band I)
GSM GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900"
so it's safe to say there is going to be only one version?
if so, I will order my Xperia S and start using it in Canada!!
From what I have seen for the last three months, only one version which is quad band. Today I ordered one from ebay shipping from Hong Kong and I should be receiving it next week sometimes around Thursday. I will report back once I have it.

I will report back once I either trim down my SIM card or buy a micro SIM.
I am on Telus now running an unlocked generic Xperia Arc.

I can confirm it is a quad band. It supports UMTS/HSPA Bands 1/2/5/8. See screenshot from my service menu.
PS: the phone is unbelievably awesome.
I know this thread is old.. but my xperia s only gets edge internet conection..! D: No 3g at all! I'm in Bolivia btw. With "a" versions of other xperia phones I was able to get 3g internet connection.. why is this happening?
The 'a' and the'i' signify different versions of Baseband. The baseband determines which 3g network you connect to ! Make sure you pick up the right instrument otherwise you wont be able to connect to 3G. Google "3G baseband" + your Country and then see which model, the a or the i supports that baseband Wrong baseband => No 3g
