HTC Salsa internally is very similar to Defy. 800 MHz CPU (Some sites reported as being 600 Mhz), 512MB RAM, 1520 mAh Battery, and all the sensors Salsa supports are already built-in to Defy too.
HTC Salsa is released with Gingerbread a testimony Defy is a well qualified handset to have it.
the wildfire s is only 600Mhz and that runs gingerbread

Posting in this forum won't do that. Posting at the official Motorola channels and/or directly emailing them might. Though, the ones with the biggest voice probably are the carriers. And they are counter to what we want, they prefer to have the phones as locked down as possible.

Agree here too. XDA mainly for us looking for quick answer like updates, custom updates, adding features or removing features or even solving problems.. Motorola would just close one eye reading here(if they even read here) as it's not their official site to follow any kind of action.

I have different opinion on that. Motorola can ignore anything on their own forums but less on other public domains such as XDA. If they were listening they wouldn't need to conduct a survey in the UK to figure things out.
I don't think blaming carriers are going to help me to get my updates sooner. The situation with India release and pulling it off is an evident the whole fiasco of late updates is Motorola's fault.
Probably UK has the largest Defy owners out side of USA, then again Motorola hasn't released Froyo to UK yet, as of 09 June 2011, but other european countries have been getting their updates already. Motorola couldn't release all the updates for all the regions at same time because they don't have the means and management to do it. Not a good thing for a global company that is trying to make a come back to Mobile market at the cost of getting me frustrated to the point wanting to buy another handset from another manufacturer just to disassociate with them.
As I have previously mentioned this on another thread, I use my smartphone as a tool, hence custom roms are not reliable for me at all. I can't afford to reset my phone everytime there is a new version of the custom rom. So software as well as hardware is important to me, not just the hardware.
I know UK is going to get Froyo next week but I'm way too frustrated with Motorola now. Defy mostly likely is going to be my last experience with Motorola.

I don't see the connection. What about a custom rom would prevent you from using your phone as a tool? Considering custom roms could very well be more stable than what Motorola provides.

Err, just because a new version, doesn't mean you have to install it the second it becomes available.
@CSharpHeaven,
You have so much time to write but doesn't have time to resetting your phone over a new updated custom rom. Beside you could always use backup app like TitaniumBackup to restore your apps and google account to restore your contacts. you don't have to be a scientist to do all these and restoring to default stock rom is just a few clicks away. You keep on frustrating over late official froyo when you could already run gingerbread here is not making any sense. Why frustrate?? you could always return back to where your stock rom were if the official update really roll out in your place.
Your persistent isn't going anywhere as you are logging in XDA where people mainly looking for custom rom, leaked rom, customised sbf and so on. There's nothing you can get here if you're still waiting over OFFICIAL roll out Froyo unless you willing to break your own scared world and start flashing and see how deep is the rabbit hole.. I'm using Defy running Gingerbread 2.3.3 replying here and it's awesomely smooth, fast and beautiful, I have yet encounter any glitch on this super Gingerbread. Froyo is history for me. My tool is more powerful than yours even if you got your Froyo next week, is that making sense?
Perhaps you really need to change your phone and stop waiting..

Example: HTC were forced to back down on bootloader locking because of the public's outcry in public domains i.e. Engadget, XDA, Facebook, Twitter and so on. Do you think they would have listened if people were just posting their opinions on HTC's forums?

That is true, however, I own a retail version of the handset hence I'm not tied to any carrier but Motorola forces me to wait all the tests by carriers are carried out before I get my updates. I'm guessing the tests are due to customisation only (i.e., carrier logo and apps) which my handset doesn't have.

Firstly Reliability. Custom ROMs for Defy are not as stable as the official ROMs. Secondly, the developers do not provide warranty for the work. In business, companies would not allow using such custom ROMs in their handsets for security and reliability issues.

I just replied to Gusar321's post that also applies to some of the points you made. I would appreciated if you read it.
I know how to make a backup and I previously rooted my Defy to use TitaniumBackup to freeze unwanted apps and services that dramatically improved the performance of Defy. About a month ago I backed up everything, unrooted the phone, and reset the handset when the first batch of updates from Motorola started rolling. I haven't been able to use my handset software features ever since because I don't have the time to setup everything when I know after the ROM update I have to redo everything again.
The best practice after installing a ROM is to master reset the phone. This is how Android is. You might not need to do it but others may have to. That is why it called best practice meaning you are better off doing something.
I had to root my handset to enable backing up my data as the standard backup method offered by Motorola portal tool does not support many features you may find in other tools (i.e. the apps, wifi settings). As we speak I cannot restore my data (i.e. my notes that I need) because my phone is unrooted. I constantly worry to brick my phone during rooting and unrooting process. I haven't found a way to root Android 2.2 on defy yet. Is latest SuperOneClick release the way to go?
I really don't have the time, every time I make a post in here I have to stay up longer to finish my work for the day.

you are lucky you didnt own a Hero then. It was outdated they day i got it(two days before launch). it came with 1.5 i believe, 1.6 was already out and 2.0 was announced a few weeks later w/ the DROID. THEN 2.1 one came out and Hero owners were STILL waiting. finally 2.2 was announced and a week or so later they pushed 2.1 to Sprint Heros.
long story short, dont expect it to come out anytime soon with HTC's track record. i would recommend rooting and installing cm6, it runs great sans 4G

HTC has announced 2.2 will roll out by December. If you want it that bad, i suggest trying out CyanogenMod. I never had 4G coverage around me, but after playing around with it, i would never go back to a Sense-based 2.1 ROM.

Cyanogen's mod, while amazingly awesome, has problems. There are missing features, inconsistencies between what works and what doesnt from user to user, and it's AOSP.
HTC has to make EVERYTHING work for EVERYONE all the while porting over their sense UI. All of their apps and widgets need to work on Froyo. It needs to be stable. This sort of thing realistically can take months to perfect. So don't be butthurt when you don't get it til Christmas.
I personally can't stand Sense... or any other UI put on top of android. But as long as I can root and boot up custom roms, I'm a happy camper.
uhh isn't google suppose to be the one releasing froyo since they are the makers of android os not htc? i thought htc was just the hardware
google only releases it for nexus one
they then release froyo source then hardware makers like htc and motorola use the source along to build their versions with either sense or blur
Now I can see how so many people are confused.
This isn't a simple phone, it is complex and there are many hands in the cookie jar. Please do some research about your phone, and who makes what, and you will realize it is far more complicated than "Froyo is out, how come my phone doesn't have it."
I'm very happy with the Froyo I already have. I see 4G as a totally useless feature due to its extreme battery drainage.

Then thinking you can come into a development forum and post a question that should be common knowledge to anyone tinkering at all in Android is just lazy.
If you switch phones every two months, then what do you care about Froyo, or even learning what your phone can do anyway...
When I make a purchase, I find out what I am buying, if it suits my needs, what limitations it has, what support it has etc. I call that making an "informed" decision.
I don't just walk into the story and buy the pretty one without knowing the above. Or else I would have an iPhone and wouldn't care about what I can do with it.
This was a lazy question posted by someone that hasn't done any reading about their phone or they would see what has to be done to get an Official Froyo build.
basically,
Froyo (aka: Android 2.2) has been released by it's maker. it's maker is Google. HTC gets licensing to install the OS on it's phones. now, when HTC first started working with Android...android was..well...it was lacking...it was lacking a fair bit. so the HTC devs put some 'Sense' onto android to make it something that the nerds can bring to their corporate executives. (cause if we nerds can't sell the boss on how cool this is...then i don't get to play it.) meanwhile, Google is trying to turn Android into a serious market contender. and its going up against some very mature code. this has a side effect of causing Google to release v1.5, v1.6, v2.1 and v2.2 rather close to each other. this is not a sustainable pace of release...it will piss everyone off. thankfully Froyo supposedly will be able to bridge us over until v3.0. at which point google has said they will proceed with a much slower version relase of Android.
Sense is not needed like it used to be. however, it'll prolly be around for a while. htc has said they will release froyo onto the evo but that is not a priority for them...the evo is yesterdays product so its more important getting the upcoming devices ready for market. perhaps the HTC/Sprint sanctioned Android 2.2 will be released by the end of the 4th quarter (or so they say).
on the good note...CM6 is rather nice. even without having 4G running yet. but really, how often do need to turn on the 4G radio? and they will get it working before long.
i must also agree w/ Bielinsk on this one....

Check out Avalaunchmods Froyo ROM with Sense. He released an RC for it today and hopes to have a couple of little issues fixed tonight. He has a Sense and no-Sense ROM available. maybe because all the phones i buy are android os...and you really have way too much time on you're hand to flame someone over such a little thing...all i asked was "isn't froyo suppose to be released by google and not htc" if you don't wana answer it then leave it alone...noone wants to hear your history crap...Noone wants to know how you read every nutrient fact before buying milk or read every little thing that's on the charging adapter...maybe you have time all the time in the world to do that and all the power to you but not everyone is like...we actually have a life and don't learn the history of every little thing we purchase...and fyi forums are made to ask questions and to inform each other...so if you don't like someones question instead of flaming simply don't read it and move on.
I am confused about these android os's. I realize my G2 came with the 2.2 Froyo. This obviously is a no brainer. But, since I just got my phone setup the way I like it (for now anyway) with CyanogenMod 6.4, am I supposed to expect T-Mobile to update my phone automatically with the new Gingerbread? (I doubt that the G2 will ever see it as a T-Mobile OTA) From my reading and researching it seems the Gingerbread has some new tweaks, more game related tweaks. I guess they decided to update the software with new graphics tweaks by implementing a new graphics software (OTA) similar to my NVIDIA GeForce 130M with independent-stand-alone 1g memory (Yea, Right!).
What I want to get clear is; the Cyanogen Mod 6.4 is based on the 2.2 Froyo isn't it? Will the Cyanoge ROM work in conjunction with the 2.3 Gingerbread, if it does update to all are phones? Or, is the 2.3 the same as th Cyanogen ROM, (and/or) is it going to be suggested that we let the 2.3 update (if we do get that option to download in the future) load and have to go through the whole re-rooting process again to install another ROM on top of it; like the Cyanogen.
And last, Is there another ROM on board here that anyone might want to suggest or if the Cyanogen pretty much the best upgrade? I do actually like all the features, now that I have my Launcher Pro working on top of it.
Thanks for any information,
Paul Holmes

afar as an OTA from TMO, don't hold your breath. we may get something sometime Q1 2011, but in my opinion and experience with TMO, this will never happen. They tend to to bother upgrading OS' if there is no known bug or issues that hinders the basic use of the device....you most likely will have to look for leaks on your own.
Af for CyanogenMOD, I'm pretty sure that him and his team will be proting 2.3 into his ROM. I would wait maybe a moth or so and we should have full Gingerbread ROMS in our G2's.
As for ROMs, and which is best.....I'm very new to this, but the one name I have always heard off as great ROMs are the CM's. There are many out there, I guess you could play around until you find one that suits you. Also if you prefer Sense over vanilla look...just look around. What I found (works for me) is the CM6.1 stable ROM....I have no issues with it, it allows me to control what I need to control, and then some. Many of the other ROMS out there may be missing conponents that I find here that work for ie FM Radio....
Hope this rambling helps...
Yes! This did help. I think I understand the nature of google's android systems in conjunction with CM. CM just takes their os and does exactly what their name says. They mod it. Your rambling is very much appreciated!
Thanks!

True....but that had more to do with incredible amount of issues this phone had upon launch, and precisly being the flagship phone they had to react rather quick. I also think that it had to do with the amount of rturns they had to deal with during that period.
As for the flagship comment, I think the my touch 4g has taken over that role.

Once you've flashed a custom ROM, you won't automatically get an OTAs from your carrier. You'd have to flash back to stock to get an official OTA. But Cyanogen will have a Gingerbread version before your carrier comes out with a 2.3 OTA anyway.
To give a general answer to the OP:
1) CM 6.1 is based on Froyo. There is no 6.4.
2) What Cyanogen and his team do is take the current available source code and redesign it to make it better. This means that the stock (shipping) ROM is not using its full capacity for speed, stability, and functionality, so CM pushes that envelope.
3) CM 6.1 will never be a Gingerbread ROM, but it is almost certain that CM X.X (probably CM 7) will be Gingerbread based, and point #2 will apply to that as well.
4) We'll see a CM 7 shortly after the Gingerbread source code (not the SDK, which is already available) is made public.
5) There will also be other Gingerbread-based ROMs available when the source code is leaked, which may have already happened, or will happen within the next few days. CM, as far as I know, does not use leaked source codes, but waits until it is officially released.
6) All of the above is based on my observations, and I have no inside knowledge, so it could be partially, or fully, false.
That is one of the most informative posts I've seen on the xda website! Little explanations like that help clear up confusion. Even over something this small.
Thanks,
Paul
Hi All,
apologies in advance if I'm asking something obvious...
I haven't purchased the Defy yet as I'm checking if this would be suitable for my wife and I'm struggling to understand the differences with the only other Android device I already own, a Galaxy S.
What I don't understand is this "bootloader locked" concept: it seems to be agreement on the fact that unlocking it is not proving to be an easy feat but exactly how does this "lock" affect the upgradeability of the phone?
I see that there are already several firmwares available, an advanced recovery mode, an application to flash the firmware and few custom ROMs so what's the bootloader for?
I have already flashed a dozen of different ROMs (both official and custom) on my Galaxy and the only thing I need to worry there, is the ROM itself and eventually the kernel...
Thanks for shedding some light on this subject: this phone looks great, far better than the "little" HTC & Samsung
Locked means that no matter what you put on the phone, certain pieces of the firmware have to be signed by Motorola or it will not boot. This makes it incredibly difficult to create fully functional firmwares. For example on Nexus One, new kernels can be compiled from open source, to help enable certain new features in the OS. On a Motorola locked bootloader, you can't load those kernels or it won't boot.

Thanks for the answer, cmstlist.
What about firmwares 2.21, 2.34 & 2.51 (just to mention the ones I see more in the threads here): are they not fully functional and/or bugged?
As this is going to be my wife's phone I don't plan to tinker much with it (unlike my Galaxy which I never let rest for more than few days ): to be honest Froyo (because of flash support) and the possibility to recover if things go wrong are the only things I'm after
The 2.21, 2.34 and 2.51 releases are fully functional and the latter two do lack much of the Blur features of the stock rom (which is appreciated by many users).
I run the 2.34 for a week now and didn't run into any problems, although there are some aspects of the phone I didn't use yet (e.g. bluetooth).
All of the above mentioned roms are 2.1 Eclair roms.
For the Fryo roms posted the picture is different. I didn't flash a 2.2 release yet, but from what you can read there are some issues. However, maybe someone running a Fryo Defy has more info on that.
Those ROM's are pretty much fully functional, but I guess you can hunt down a bug or two in just about any ROM, on any phone. The only one I've discovered so far (I'm on 2.34.1) is the inability to sync Facebook contacts with the phones contact book.
As you probably know, an official FroYo is on it's way, but there's no telling exactly when it'll be released, sometime during Q2.
I think it's a great phone, a huge bang for the bucks, as it's rugged, water resistant but still really light. And it does it's job, no lag, no freezes, good battery time. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Sent from my MB525 using Tapatalk
The fact that one Froyo build exists, means that devs have something to work around to make other Froyo ROMs. On the other hand, if devs were trying to port Gingerbread? This would be a huge problem, because no matter how many pieces of delicious crispy Gingerbread you stick into this ROM, the kernel is still soft-serve Froyo, and the results will be kind of mushy.
Hmm, I'm hungry now.
Thanks for all the input.
If I understood correctly, in spite of Motorola's bootloader lock, there is development and customization going around this phone and this doesn't prevent new firmwares being flashed.
As the specs look really great and many people on this forum seem to be extremely happy with it I think I'll get one for the missus and we'll soon try how rugged it is with two little devils always trying to get at papa & mama's toys (I had to build a force field around my Galaxy!)

There is customization, but there just isn't the flexibility to craft entirely new firmwares. You can't simply compile a ROM from source and flash it to this phone... you have to take the compiled ROM, extract pieces of it, inject them into a stock ROM that the phone is signed to accept, pray that it all works, and then come up with dirty little hacks to get around the bits that fail.
But if you want your durable Android, the Defy is still the only game in town. So that's still the selling point. =)
and Motorola will never ever change their policy on locked bootloader.. am i right?
i pretty believe with all the hardwares they have, they can simply double the number of users if they have the same policy as other big name like HTC..

ROM 2.2 works well, but do you think there will be a Android2.3 Rom for Defy? I like flashing new roms
with bootloader locked?
Simply and definitly NO...
With a unlocked bootloader, maybe
If you're talking about an official update it is hard to say...
As you can see, although there are already a few 2.3 phones around, Motorola still delays Defy 2.2 for most of the world.
So... Personally I don't think they're doing this because they wanna jump to 2.3 directly, but because they're concentrating on other things (like Atrix).
So I would rather expect an unofficial 2.3.
Cheers!

Cheers!

yeah maybe you are right, official update is hopeless.
Yeah very stupid for moto to tight things up. Just let advanced users playing around, and novice users bricking their phones. They won't get bad rep and would most likely get some extra sales.
Well we could use Froyo Kernel for Gingerbread, Gingbread to Froyo ist not that difference!

Hey you are chinese, then why dont you follow that thread on porting 2.3 on defy at goapk forum and let us know what is happening at the development?
a true one? probably not unless moto unlocks the bootloader, or it releases one itself (maybe, maybe not, moto ahs a bad reputation on tihs).
the current 2.2 roms are rocking 2.6.32 kernels and official 2.3 should be rocking 2.6.35 kernels.
that being said, one can run a hackish 2.3 rom with 2.6.32 kernels, i *think* it can be done but then it won't be truly 2.3
I don't think they will release official 2.3ROM because they didn't released a final 2.2. I hope, that Moto will officially unlocks the Bootloader to give us more possibilities...
I really hope that there will be a Gingerbread ROM some time in the future, preferably with the bootloader unlocked rather than the hacks for which I cannot prise the authors enough.
However, the Defy is still a great phone, also with 'just' 2.2 and that is what counts most to me. Who knows what kind of phone € 300 buys you in a year from now

Not yet
2.2 upgrade was allways announced for Q2 2011, so they're in the planning.
After that, who knows. They may offer 2.3 after 6 month or more (when 2.4 is release on they high-end phone) But I really don't expect for that today.
For me the Defy will stay on 2.2 for Motorola. The only hope it an unlocked bootlooader (officially or not)
Same here, Defy is a 2.2 device, period. A bootloader unlock would let us use 2.3 or higher but I doubt Motorola will spend more money on a new official update. Let's hope they will actually release a 2.2 ROM in a few months (the South American market should get its froYo within a month according to their schedule).
Well after the editorial of chris ziegler of engadget about motoblur they better off kill motoblur.
Defy will have Gingerbread when Nexus one gets Android 2.5

Lazy journalism, pointing out the obvious.
The fact he once thought Blur was good says it all IMO.
Anyway, if Motorola haven't listened to feedback from their customers, why would one blogger's opinion sway them?

tru dat. One review or a few posts won't sway M, however, a flood of consistant calls from customers might. To the phones
On the other hand, I did speak with tmous yesterday and they said the 2.2 which is supposed to be release 'real soon' is going to be a higher end 2.2 version...whatever that means, not even the rep had a clue what that meant but I suppose that is what they are told to say.

Sounds like a large pile of BS to me.
Froyo is Froyo, Motorola aren't going to roll out some superior version of it - in fact, with Blur, if anything it's an inferior version...
i really do believe that 2.2 froyo update will come .. but 2.3 gingerbread ? nah i dont think so ... motorola is not really known for it's updates ..but if it comes my defy will be very happy to grab it ...
Motorola has already announced a Froyo update soon and I cant wait for that. Moto's history with updates and the locked bootloader doesn't give us much to hope for, but let's keep our fingers crossed! It would be amazing though!
We've been EOL for a few months but they did say the GB update would be coming... we saw that early build leak and then nothing.
Is the Droid Incredible the new Droid Eris?
I was hoping for some kind of update before they start releasing those fancy new Windows Phones and I bid adieu to Android. I'm thinking of just finally breaking down and rooting.
Where is the easiest, most straight forward instructions on how to root this puppy. A few ROMS look nice... I figure I might as well try them out.
http://unrevoked.com/ unrevoked is a one click solution for root. Just root. Try out some roms, make a backup of your stock rom if you're unhappy.
Root is the best thing you can ever do to this phone.

It's Verizon people. If we ***** at HTC enough they'll cave but I can't write emails for everyone.
Dear XXXXXXXXX,
We are more than happy to be able to provide some clarity to the situation at hand.
Currently, our developers have to work with Verizon to determine when and if a ROM upgrade will be available. Unfortunately, there is no estimated time for availability of any ROM update. Please check the HTC America website for any software updates that may be released, http://www.htc.com/us. Just click on the support link then choose your device.
XXXXXXX, we do apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number.
Sincerely,
Samantha
I only care because of source code & this is Verizon telling HTC not to update. It's fairly obvious that HTC had intentions of continued support.
Verizon has great coverage, but damn they suck at updates
Only thing we need is the damn kernel!

This.
I know it can be hard for people to justify taking 5 minutes to write an email they think is pointless but I would like to encourage you all to. Verizon will not change their mind but maybe we can get HTC to continue support on their site. Gingerbread won't be a big deal I know but I'm worried about ice cream sandwich & compatibility with our current resources.
You can contact HTC here: http://www.htc.com/us/support/e-mail
They got back to me in 2 days & I'm trying to keep the dialog open.
^^^Ill spam their mailbox everyday! any advice as to what to write?

I dunno. I was polite but informed. I simply said that I knew they had plans for it & that older or similar hardware (desire, evo, etc) had received the update so I know it's not for a lack of compatibility or power. I also mentioned my displeasure at the fact that they would rather cater to Verizon than support current customers & they might want to take a page out of apples playbook in that regard.
Lastly I let them know that this would be remembered on my next purchase.
Above all be polite but informed.
Well I just finished my second reply. Basically restating previous points made in further detail but with an emphasis on the fact that apple can't sue them for emulating their politics free policy on supporting their current customers which is a major key to their success.
Once again I implore all of you to be the squeaky wheel. It worked for the desire community. So please people, lets demand some grease.

We're not even talking about being rooted or not. We're talking about an update that should have been released already that will bring with it more fixes and other Rom components we need to keep development alive for our phone. I used to love CM but it definitely did not blow my mind, lol. Its just Android with another overlay.
Tv out and 720p camera don't exist in all the GB releases (customs or leak). It won't till the GB OTA or RUU is released, if ever.
I'll see if I can shoot em an email in the a.m. Wifi is spotty where I'm at currently.
Sent from my awesome sauce Incredible with some sweet Miui action
Visually, there's no difference between 2.2 and the leaked 2.3. If it's that big of a deal to you, root your **** and install the leaked 2.3. It runs fine.
If you want to get more out of your phone, go with CM7.
