has anyone heard of this "odin clone" for macs? some one mentioned it over at the fascinate threads. i was wondering if anyone has heard of this? i tried google and i couldn't find anything
Its called Heimdall, and it works on OS X, Windows, and Linux. Only thing is, most Macs have issues with it working. Something Apple did messed it up.

Heimdall doesn't work with the epic. They said it was odin just a clone to run on macs.

If you're saying you have heimdall working in osx, then you should explain to the community where you got the updated sbl that enables heimdall to work with osx on galaxy s phones... which most of them have received the update... except the epic.

I meant that the Epic worked with Heimdall, not my Mac. Sorry for the confusion. I used the Windows version.
Heimdall works with epics for linux and windows, just not osx.. works on macs with another os in bootcamp though...

You might be able to do it with Mobil Odin but it's always risky downloading big tar files or roms on your phone.
I'd just wait to get to a PC so its done right and safely. I know how it feels man, running rooted stock, its like wanting to get laid but no females are at the party.

Don't u need root permission to use mobile Odin?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Yup, mobile odin can inject root and install the ROM, assuming you already have root. If you don't you need one of the traditional methods.
Nobody better to clarify this than the master of root, sfhub

Root like a BOSS!
I don't know where to start, I saw a video on how to root with US SGSIII root file but the file is not available, where can I download it and if anyone has used a Mac and can give me some tips I would really appreciate it. I also, checked the wiki and did search but couldn't find anything.
Your going to have a hard time rooting with a mac, no Odin support. Just try a windows computer. There not to hard to find

Thanks a lot, I'll try Bootcamp and see how it goes. Basically I should start with Odin right?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Yes. I believe there us an sgs3 toolkit in developer's section that can root it too. I have not used this method so I can't tell you how well it works

Follow instructions on this post. It works perfectly

So wait - is there no other way at the moment to root a GS3 on a Mac? I usually don't mind experimenting with terminal, but damn that seems involved/risky.

to be honest, the easiest way is to just borrow a pc for the initial rooting using odin. afterwards, you can just use adb on your mac to copy files to and from your phone.
Just install a 30 day trial of Fusion or Parallels, load up Windows and you're on your way.
Just download everything you need onto a flash drive walk into a best buy Walmart or target and do it there. Takes 5 minutes

And if so is there any good how-tos? I've searched for a little while now and can't find any CDMA ones in the GS3 section. Interested in trying it out if it's functional or purely for nerd reasons.

I've been wondering the same thing lately! Would be pretty cool to see
Look for Complete Linux Installer in the market. I used it to get ubuntu running on my ns4g and kindle fire. I showed it to my linux professor last year and he was amazed. I don't see any reason why it won't work on our gs3's, I should try it again myself. Really simple to do actually as all the instructions are there for you.

Isn't running Linux on your phone just using a VNC-like server to a computer, running Linux?

Well you do use a vnc server but that's only so you can see the interface. It's all running on your phone independent of anything else.

Thanks dear,
What is special about ubunt.
Would Ubuntu completely replace the Android OS or can you dual-boot it so that you can run Ubuntu while docked via MHL onto a monitor or laptop? When I say dual-boot, I'm referring to something like this:

Personally I don't find anything special about Ubuntu, but getting Backtrack running on my phone with the micro to normal usb adapter and a usb wireless receiver... that's my dream. Heard someone got it working on the Galaxy Nexus.
My friend had a windows phone and got android to run on it, so I was wondering if I could run windows phone os on the gs3? I know android is open source, but I don't know if windows phone os is.
Sent from my SPH-L710 running FreeGS3 v0.1.1
Windows os is not open source so I think it is impossible to run it on gs3. I'm not 100 % sure but I know for a fact its not open source os.

Yes, their newest Windows Phone is essentially a GS3 made to run Windows Phone 8...could be interesting...wonder how different the hardware is.
HTC HD2 was able to dual boot W7 with Android and I believe Ubuntu, though Ubuntu was some what or very unstable...
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/24/htc-hd2-can-now-dual-boot-windows-phone-7-and-android-promises/
This would be very kool to have on the SG3!

This was discussed in the EPIC 4G forum too, there is a valid point... Windows mobile is closed source, so making a port would be very difficult and highly unprobable due to legal stuff. Closest thing is a theme :/

check the threads and did not find an answer. do anybody know how to rooted a s3 using a mac?
i believe you need windows to root. if you have an extra windows disk you can run it in boot camp.
you could have used Heimdall in the past, however they have not made one for the GSIII
Ok yea i have windows 7. I use vmare just want to know thanks again
