4G Issues. Is there something i can try?? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, my phones connects to 4g 2 bars but the internet wont work. Already talked to a sprint tech who had me reset the radio and other things and nothing. He said to go to a sprint store saying something could be wrong with the phone.. 3g works ok though
Is there something else i could try before going to a sprint store??

This happened to me the other day while in a very strong 4G spot, and it lasted a few hours. Be sure that it isn't just your local tower by trying it in a different location. In my case, it was definitely something on Sprint's end. If the problem is everywhere and wiping Android doesn't work, I guess you may indeed have a hardware issue. I just would eliminate all other possibilities before doing the more drastic things.

Phone will show no signal and not reconnect

Wife works in a low reception area and will sometimes lose signal. the only problem is it does not reconnect untill you reset. anyone else have this issue or have a fix?

I know the Nexus had a crappy radio but I never lost connection with it, especially at my home where I lost data/cellular connection twice so far

Unfortunately I cannot say that I have experienced this, while I am at work I have my Wi-Fi on 100%, and whenever I step outside of the office to use the bathroom, or to go to the vending machine (Wi-Fi signal still barely reaches), There have been several times that it would drop the connection because the signal was too weak. However as soon as I got back within proper range It would reconnect immediately with no problems.
well I called sprint last night and the reprovisioned everything. They said this is the first that they have heard of it and are sending the info to sprint and samsung. I will report back later if this fixes her problem. I doubt it will though, because other post have shown that this is just like doing a profile and prl update.
I just tested my WiFi again at work. I am standing next to the WiFi Router, and cannot get a connection unless I reset the phone. I am frustrated. I cannot reset my phone everyday when I come to work just to get a signal.
I just jumped ship from AT&T's iPhone to this, and need to decide where to go next. Verizon Bionic?
I had same problem happen last night. Showed the international no symbol and didn't get a signal until I rebooted.

Problem with data?

Today i went to hilton head from savannah. In savannah i have fine 4g service. once i passed over bored of ga and sc i lost all service. i did not go into 3g nor edge. I also have a vibrant that i carry which kept a 3g service for most of the time. It went into edge for a few minutes but it krept back into 3g. My SGS II never came back into service until i was 5 minutes away from my house. I reset the phone a couple times throughout the day which did not help. has anyone experienced a loss in data with another phone that is on same service have data. This was unexpected and frankly pissed me off. NO GPS, NO INTERNET. all i could do was text. I even had gps on my vibrant (miui latest le) which if you came from vibrant you know its not the greatest gps.
My real question is....Do you think its a defect and should i try to get another one or something im going to have to deal with on the SGS II . I am always going back and forth between the two places.
Next time you take the drive try going to Settings -> Wireless & Network -> Mobile Networks and changing your network mode to GSM only.
You may be onto something because I experience the same thing when at the office. My 4G drops and it won't switch to edge, I just have no service.
If the auto mode isn't working for anyone that really is lame.
I have called CS on this and they didn't seem concerned and just told me to do what I wrote in the first paragraph.

well i would rather know if its a defect or just unable to switch services automatically before my grace period is up. So please do report back...
It definitely seems like there is an issue with switching between 4g & E. I can't fully confirm but I've been switching them manually today and it's working. If I leave it on auto it never switches to edge even when 4g is at zero bars. Weird. I don't know if this is normal or not cause this is my first real 4g device.

How do you switch manually? I have problems inside of buildings, not that I expect it to have a 4g inside, but edge would still be helpful for work email notifications.

wimax no longer working

so here's the deal, I've been using blazer 4.0 and everything is great. I have always had wimax and so these last two days I've been tethering my phone to my ps3 (battlefield 3) and so today all of a sudden it doesn't work anymore. I called Sprint and no help, back to stock nothing, rooted again and tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447615 but no luck. I changed the "realm" to clearwire and my 4g connected but obviously took me to a clearwire page that asked me to purchase a plan. I've used 8gb this month and I know for a fact my 4g radio works...any ideas ? please guys just try and help.
I have the same issue today. Phone runs stock rom, no root no tether. And today I can't pick up any 4G signal. Don't know the reason.

I know this is going to sound backwards, but I live in Long Beach, CA and I couldn't get anything but 4G service, my 3G was always on 1x and terribly slow. That has been since Monday, then yesterday evening updated my PRL and both went back to normal or I got my 3G back. But 4G was the only thing that was working.....
I'm also running Phantom 4.0 btw

This maybe a long shot but there was a lot of solar activity that was messing around with electronics. It could be possible that the radios on our phones are more susceptible to this introduction of noise then others. If the phone isn't behaving better today or tomorrow then the problem is likely something else.
My 4G connectivity has been coming in fine until it became non existent since yesterday. Not really sure why, but doing a bunch of resets doesn't help for me as well. The 4G indicator comes on, but no signal bars appear. Hmmm...
Oh, and I'm in Ontario, CA. SoCal tower down perhaps?

We were in a major solar storm yesterday, it may have had an effect on the towers and/or some of our phones. Try updating prl and profile, see if that works. I'm in Seattle and no problem here but I just got my E4GT so I was flashing and checking out different roms all day.

Thanks guys, even if the solar storm interupted my connection then why do it connect to clearwire? It has to be Sprint and I'm not paying for them to check out my phone when clearly they're the ones controlling it

OMG i just started a thread about this.... I thought i was the only one. My gf with an OG Epic connects fine.....my 4g stopped connecting about yesterday...
Forgot to mention I also have a verizon 4g aircard from work and it was working beautifully today with no slow downs or problems
Follow-up from my initial response...
I called Sprint tech support and they had me do the basic pull the battery, reset the phone exercises, but nothing worked. They told me that there was no outage in my area (SoCal) so they escalated me to the 4G team (Tier 2 support).
After about an hour of going through the same exercises, the tech support person opened up a ticket and mentioned that he's been noticing a lot of complaints today of the same issue. He also mentioned something about "dual mode services" not provisioning. Not really sure what that meant, but he told me that he doesn't think it's a hardware issue, but a Sprint side issue which he thinks should be resolved in the next day or two. Regardless, he created a ticket anyway to take with me to the Sprint store if I decide to get it checked out sooner than later.
I guess I'll wait a day (or two) to see if it resolves itself. I'll follow-up with another post if anything tangible happens within this time.
The dual mode comment might refer to the fact that our phones are dual mode-wimax and LTE, from what I understand sprint is going LTE around June or July. Or at least that's what the manager of the store I bought my E4GT at said.

I live in the Hacienda Heights CA, and work at La Punte, city of Industry. I called sprint today, tried to update my prl and profile, but it still doesn't work. Maybe I can wait the sun storm pass out.
Ok ok, here's what happened. This problem started Thursday morning and so after doing the battery pull and blah blah blah I finally went to a Sprint store early Friday morning. While waiting for a tech I notice two e4gt on display so like anyone would went over and tested 4g on them, nothing...tried the og epic and without a problem it connected. I told the tech and he pulled out his e4gt and same thing...nothing so I called tech support today and told them and they startdd a ticket saying they would have a tech check it out...i later called and the tech said "oh there's an outage in your area" but I don't know because Sprint employees aren't always very consistent. I think it might have to do with our dual band but I did ##data# and changed the realm to clearwire.wmx.net and connected to 4g like nothing but when i set it to sprintpcs.com it disconnects so I am beyond confused

Update:
As of this AM, my 4G is still toast. However, on my way from Ontario, CA to LAX, my phone locked into a 4G signal around the Downey area (105 fwy). I figure this issue isn't due to my phone crapping out on me. So I placed another call into tech support and they just confirmed with me that the towers around my area are down and they apparently have engineers working on getting them back up. ETA for a fix is 6PM tomorrow. 3/11.
I guess I'll have to wait and see...

I live in SE TX near Galveston island but im on mainland. I have 4G where I live even though it's not included in the coverage map. I usually get 1 bar inside my house and it works fairly well. Occassionally my 4G will not connect no matter what I do. It goes out for several hours and will start connecting again by early morning. It has done this several times but I really can't complain because according to Sprint, WiMax isn't supposed to be available in my city. But anyways this seems to be caused by either maintanance/upgrades or possibly cloud coverage/solar interference. It always works again after a few hours of downtime. This is my experience.

I'm in San Bernardino about 20 minutes from you. My 4g has been completely gone for the last 2 days as well. At my house near Cal State, it's been perfect since June 4, 2010 (original evo release date) and only now has it ever gone out like this. Very frustrating as I rely on it a lot since the 3g at my house is virtually non-existent. Shoot me a PM if you get a signal or hear anything from sprint. Thanks.

[Q] Please help having problems with GS3 4G/3G anytype of data other than WiFi.

My Phone is being so SLOW on "4G" Its downloading according to the Speedtest app at .30 mb/s but if i go to www.mobilespeedtest.com and do the 7mb test it shows 9650 kb/s then on www.speedof.me it shows 40-55mb/s I have no idea what the heck is going on. I do knw that facebook/playstore apps and such download super slow. I had customer service try to help me they couldn't figure it out so they forwarded it to a tech. If anyone could help me it would be cool. I even updated to the Newest Modem. *shrugs* Maybe cause of "Sandy" their service is slow. Yano?
If you are in the N.E. then yes, the storm is apparently causing problems even for those who weren't hit that hard.
The speedtest app is not a good real world use indicator. Could be the server your using.
If you're getting 9mb down for some sites, and faster/slower on others, well, that's the net!
You say that facebook app is slow. What about going straight to the site?
If your speeds are jumibg around as much as you're implying, where sometimes its fast, sometimes its slow, then id say its probably due to the storm if you're in that area. Give it a few days and see.

Well I'm in Indiana NE IN, haven't been able to get off of UMTS:3 for some reason it just won't come off edge.

It won't go to 4g? Earlier you said it was just slow on 4g. If you're stuck on edge check that your imei isn't zero. If it is you need to visit peoplearmys and geeks threads. Check the stickies.

Sorry its taken so long to reply I've tried all the above. IMEI isn't 0000 or anything. Flashed the newest radios then tried others. Not sure what is going on. It shows "3G" in the top status bar; go under mobile settings it shows UMTS:3 for data connection. This is both my phone and my Fiance's and she has the Galaxy Blaze. Our area is covered under 4G that is for sure; and we have the TRULY unlimited 4G data for 30$ a month.

If both of your phones are having the same problem and they are different phones, then I'm almost completely certain that the problem is not the phone.
Its a tmobile network/tower problem.
If you go to a different area of town do you get 4g?
Call tmobile to report it and make sure to tell them its happening on two different phones and if they are on separate or same accounts. Whether or not you can get 4g elsewhere will help them too.

No sadly my town is one of the few around here if u wanna check the coverage map and see maybe give suggestion it's Angola IN. I called them and they said take your batteries oit and turn the phones off for 5 mins they are resetting the network. Did that and its the same thing shows UMTS:3. I'll call them and suggest what u said then.

Oh and btw, it will show UTMS at all times except during a data transfer. Find something to download and check it while its downloading.

Werid 4g speeds, need help ruling out phone or network

I bought a Tmobile Galaxy S3 on new years from staples, and since ive got the phone ive been experiencing strange 4g speeds. While im in my house, I always have full signal strength, and it always says 4G. I live in the Bronx in New York City, and when the 4g is working properly, I get upwards of 20 megabits down, and 1-2 up. Now I could literally be sitting in the exact same spot, and later ill test the phone and it says 0.2 - 0.3 megabits, and like over 1000 ping and the up is so slow it doesnt even measure it. It usually comes back after waiting, turning airplane mode off and on multiple times or doing a battery pull. I find it strange that I can get either 21 mbps or 0.3 in the same house, while always having full bars. In the phone status sometimes it would say UTMS or HSPA, so it does switch from 3g to 4g sometimes. The thing is my previous phone was Nexus S with 3g and im pretty sure I never had a problem loading a simple image in my house because the internet was so slow. I consistently pulled 3-6 mbps on that phone. I tried calling t-mobile 3 times and they give me the same basic crap, like clear your cache, make sure airplane mode is off (really?) make sure youre network mode is on auto (i tried auto and wcdma only and it still gets slow) and all that other stuff. Is there anything else I could try to see if its a network or phone issue?
It sounds like it might be something with your local tower. I would call Tmobile and put in a repair ticket.

Thanks, I just did that. Called t-mobile and just directly asked them to check for tower issues, and they filed a complaint. They said to check back in 3 days, hopefully this gets fixed, or else it might be the phone. Do you think flashing different modems would change anything?

It wouldn't hurt to try. What are you currently running? (rom/kernel/modem)

Completely stock 4.1.1, with UVDLJA modem, which is the latest I believe. The phone is relatively new so I wanted to try touchwiz before I rooted. Does installing something like cm10 change the modem? Or is it independent of rom/kernel. I saw an application for tmo that can change between multiple modems pretty quickly, I might give it a try.

If I may lend my opinion,
To me, it definitely sounds like the tower. If you go from 20Mbit down to 0.2, and with 1000ms latency, it's super obvious there is something
wrong with the tower, or there is significant demand on the tower from other users, hey its NYC population density is insane.
Something to note as well, New York City is "in progress" for "network modernization" where they are switching to 1900Mhz.
This is why some people who have iPhones are now getting 3G in certain areas, unlocked devices, as well as AT&T phones can have 3G down there.
Due to this, since there is quite a lot of switching around going on down there, that's probably what's going on.

If it helps you at all to see if you are on a different band than 1700/2100mhz
You can go into the dialer and do:
*#0011#
Up top mine says band 4
Which is for 1700mhz AWS
BAND 2
which is for 1900mhz PCS.
You might be on band 4 or 2 on a tower by tower basis, or if they are making adjustments
You might be switched but that is above my pay grade lol
