Hi all,
I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to flashing so please stick with me...
I've read and understood the Flashtool tutorial.
I've already done an update to 2.3.3 but getting fedup with the Vodafone bloatware.
Which ROM should I use to flash my arc?
and/or - how do I know which rom's will work or are suitable?
Thanks in advance.

I flashed the o2 2.3.3 it's pretty clean. I've been running it for about a week with no issues on Canadian Rogers branded Arc. Good luck!!

You can try Generic UK version or even Generic World for that matter. They are pretty much clean (only what SE included).
Typically people flash the latest generic ROM (highest number) since it'll have the most recent tweaks/fixes.
The beauty of flashing is that you can just keep flashing until you find something you like.

Just flash the latest ftf file with flashtool. Check the Dev forum for latest stock ROMs. If it's a R800i, the ROMs you want are probably Hong Kong Generic 4.0.2.A.0.58 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375678 or North America Generic 2.3.4 4.0.2.A.0.42 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326459

Yes, that's the downloads in those threads linked. Bare in mind this will wipe your device, so you'll want to do a backup first if you want to save anything
Hey just to let everyone know this method works perfect although lost root ?
Hey friends...
My friend has recently bought a defy in India... It came with eclair...
Now he wants to upgrade to gingerbread... But he doesn't want to root... So can anyone please help me? As I'm a Samsung user, I don't know anything about Motorola devices or how to upgrade them... So I would appreciate a noob friendly guide...
Thanks...
u cannot upgrade to gingerbread w/o rooting...defy has got the official froyo, not gingerbread..
please read the pinned posts if u wish to know how to flash a custom gingerbread rom..

He can update to Froyo, but there is no official Gingerbread update from Motorola for the Defy (and there will never be one).
If he doesn't want to tinker a bit he won't get Gingerbread (there are also 2.3 ports of the Defy Plus that work quite well, but rooting is necessary to install anything like that).

You can mess around with your Defy s much as you want, root, install ROMs, flash sbfs... And you can ALWAYS go back to the stock Foyo/ Eclair firmware your Defy came with. Even if something went wrong and the phone doesn't boot anymore, just flash a stock clean Motorola firmware and everything's gone (the ROM you had before, also the root). So also if your Defy has a hardware problem and you want to send it back, just go back to stock before and you don't have to worry about the warranty.

I don't think so. if you changed the bootloader version you will be stuck on some higher kernel and can not easily go back.. (that was what happend to epsylon3 - one of the main devs of CM9 for defy) - so if you flashed official froyo - you will not be able to go back to eclair for example. (as is also pointed out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537)
A piece of advice: read a lot (here in this forums) before you flash something. It help you not getting in trouble with your phone.

There is no point in using defy with the buggy stock Eclair/Froyo ..
If u want to see the complete potential of defy Root it and Install CM7..
and yes you can go back when ever you want but make sure u take the Nandroid backup of the stock ROM that u r using and check whether the official sbf of ur region is available to download.so that u can flash it and restore the nandroid backup .. !!

Right, that was the only thing I wasn't thinking about. That is what is usually written in big red letters when there's something about these sbfs. But normally there is no need to change the bootloader version by installing the (not fixed) 2.3.4 sbf.
The only really current reliable options for the Defy imho are CM7.1, MIUI (and some versions based on it) and the Defy+ based ROMs (like MS2Ginger). With none of them you risk to be stuck somewhere - I flashed stock Froyo a dozen times without problems.
Thanks all for your replies....

Hi All,
Since this is my first post I am unable to ask this in the relevant thread so apologies. I was just wondering if the excellent rooting toolkit posted on the other thread is available with JB instead of ICS? I know there are guides to flashing xperia arc LT15i to JB but none I can find that don't require the bootloader unlocked..
Thanks for your support

Why would you need it? There is no JB for our phones, so it is not needed. All custom ROMs are already rooted, so you don't need to do anything.
Perhaps I misunderstand the process then, I understood that in order to upgrade phone I had to have bootloader unlocked OR phone rooted. I am basing this assumption on the information I found androidgadgematic.com/2012/09/root-sony-xperia-arc-lt15-arc-s-lt18-ics.html you mention that there is no JB for xperia but I have seen several vids on youtube that claim otherwise, but again I stand to be corrected.
In essence I have an xperia arc LT15i running GB that I cannot unlock the bootloader on and I am trying to find a way to upgrade it to JB. I have been searching here, youtube, xperia blog etc but cannot find a way to do this with bootloader locked. Then I came across the method linked earlier that seems to do the job for ICS but would like JB.
Hope my rambling makes sense...
thanks again for your time

It amazes me how many new members sign up here, come straight to Q&A claiming to have searched, this that and the other then ask a question which they could find the answer for in the stickys prefixed [GUIDE] in General.
Click the first link in my sig and read from start to finish, then you might understand a bit better.
with respect I have spent over 2 days searching this site for information, perhaps I mis-understood it or was looking at the wrong info but that does not change the fact that I have genuinely tried to find an answer myself prior to posting. I think this is borne out by both the xda link and the link to androidgadgematic. It is unfair of you to assume that I am misrepresenting myself.
I would much prefer to have found a solution myself as it is faster and avoids these situations I will have a look at the links you have indicated
thanks

I assume it based on the fact that 9 out of 10 users who say they have searched actually haven't which 9 times out of 10 is usually proven by a Google search of the actual thread title they started theirs with, and if you have actually spent 2 days looking then I'm amazed you don't seem to have read any of the stickys or JB type ROM threads either which would have answered your query of having a locked boot loader.
Anyway, let us know how you get on.
I take your point and thanks for the links I have since rooted phone and installed CWM, Someguyfromhell mentioned no JB for Arc yet I see ROMs here which is somewhat confusing can you clarify?
Thanks

The clues in the title - [CM10 Based][MIUI CM10 Based], it's not officially been released and as someguy has already said custom ROMs will be rooted anyway so you don't have to. First thing to do now you're rooted is to backup your Phone in CWM then start looking at flashing ROMs.
So after a lot of reading tonight I think I see my issue, I checked se site and ICS is available for LT15i but clearly not released by my carrier (PC companion says I am up to date on (GB 3.0.1.A.0.145 sigh). I could install the stock rom if my phone was able to have bootloader unlocked (*#*#7378423#*#* bootloader not shown in configuration menu) and apparently there is no way to do this other than pay for it which sucks!
The only alternative is to install a custom ROM that works with a locked bootloader but I cannot figure out which ones will work for me so for now I think I just have to wait for my carrier or fork out €€€...
Thanks for your help and patience

You don't need unlocked bootloader to install stock ROM. If you do it via Flashtool.
I have tried installing 4.1.A.0.562 (perhaps this is not the correct ROM) using flashtool (using flashmode) and it bombed out then I tried xpart cwm but same result just looked at your ROM link and will try again with 4.1.B.0.431
Cheers

Hi irish, just a few comments, not sure how you've read my guide and come away with the conclusion that you need to unlock the bootloader to update your ROM or why you're trying to flash 2 old ROMs when I link to the latest 587. Patience is key.
ok so a severe case of brain fart I think, back when I tried this at the start of the week the flashboot failed hence my assumption that it was related to bootloader locked and hence my chasing down rabbit holes began. Looks like it was all down to having MTP enabled!! I am flashing A version of 587 I found earlier in the week (could not fine a link a 587 ROM on your post but this post indicates that 431 is oldest for LT15i.....?. Anyway it is flashing now and I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for your assistance. I think I have been reading so many posts and hoping back and forth I have tied myself in knots
Thanks again

Hi,
I just received my first smartphone and am really excited about it Aaaand ... I'm totally new to Android and the whole rooting & Custom firmware process
I want to root to Backup my TA before unlocking BL and was looking at zxz0O0's guide. There are now quite a few versions of the z1c dual recovery from NUT. I am on Android 4.3. Can I simply use the latest version?
Thanks a lot!
latest version is appropriate 2.7.99 (not tried it yet) as I rooted mine before KK came using 2.7.95
perfect, thanks for the information. Will give it a try and hope not to brick anything

I think it's safe to say that version 2.7.97 does not properly work so make sure to not use that version.

Thanks buddy for your links. The one you sent to me is generic India firmware, yesterday i found out Generic World UK version from this site:
http://forumobileservice.blogspot.it/2013/08/sony-official-firmware.html
Are there so many differences between each countries releases? Is there a global version?
Thanks
I think the differences between them are extra apps included and languages. Main parts are same.
If you flash ftf file with Flashtool, there is an option "Exclude TA" to swipe "simlock.ta" in firmware, then you can use normaly.

Ok clear, thanks Just last question, Do you suggest to update to stock ICS instead of stock GB? Is GB overall better than ICS?I heard that stock ics is little worse (laggier)..
Thanks
Yes, stock GB is smoother than stock ICS. But it miss alot of features, and some new apps dont support GB, e.g: new Gmail app. I have a backup android phone run GB, the last time I check, gmail app is really suck and ugly :silly:
Flash GB if you need performance.
But for something new and fast, you should try custom roms based on Kitkat.
