Hey friends...
My friend has recently bought a defy in India... It came with eclair...
Now he wants to upgrade to gingerbread... But he doesn't want to root... So can anyone please help me? As I'm a Samsung user, I don't know anything about Motorola devices or how to upgrade them... So I would appreciate a noob friendly guide...
Thanks...
u cannot upgrade to gingerbread w/o rooting...defy has got the official froyo, not gingerbread..
please read the pinned posts if u wish to know how to flash a custom gingerbread rom..

He can update to Froyo, but there is no official Gingerbread update from Motorola for the Defy (and there will never be one).
If he doesn't want to tinker a bit he won't get Gingerbread (there are also 2.3 ports of the Defy Plus that work quite well, but rooting is necessary to install anything like that).

You can mess around with your Defy s much as you want, root, install ROMs, flash sbfs... And you can ALWAYS go back to the stock Foyo/ Eclair firmware your Defy came with. Even if something went wrong and the phone doesn't boot anymore, just flash a stock clean Motorola firmware and everything's gone (the ROM you had before, also the root). So also if your Defy has a hardware problem and you want to send it back, just go back to stock before and you don't have to worry about the warranty.

I don't think so. if you changed the bootloader version you will be stuck on some higher kernel and can not easily go back.. (that was what happend to epsylon3 - one of the main devs of CM9 for defy) - so if you flashed official froyo - you will not be able to go back to eclair for example. (as is also pointed out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537)
A piece of advice: read a lot (here in this forums) before you flash something. It help you not getting in trouble with your phone.

There is no point in using defy with the buggy stock Eclair/Froyo ..
If u want to see the complete potential of defy Root it and Install CM7..
and yes you can go back when ever you want but make sure u take the Nandroid backup of the stock ROM that u r using and check whether the official sbf of ur region is available to download.so that u can flash it and restore the nandroid backup .. !!

Right, that was the only thing I wasn't thinking about. That is what is usually written in big red letters when there's something about these sbfs. But normally there is no need to change the bootloader version by installing the (not fixed) 2.3.4 sbf.
The only really current reliable options for the Defy imho are CM7.1, MIUI (and some versions based on it) and the Defy+ based ROMs (like MS2Ginger). With none of them you risk to be stuck somewhere - I flashed stock Froyo a dozen times without problems.
Thanks all for your replies....

EDIT: It doesn't work, let's move on.
Just saw this now, apparently it works for all HTC 2.1 devices using the 'fake ota' method.
I will rewrite the guide here once someone has confirmed it works.
I can not and will not test this as I wasn't stupid enough to flash the official 2.1 RUU.

Once you get to clockwork mod recovery you should be able to flash a custom rom!

Reports on the guide website suggest that this will NOT work for HTC Hero users or in fact any phone which did not originally ship with v2.1 of Android.
I'd love someone to prove this wrong so keep trying but don't get your hopes up.
another explaination - not tested
here is another explaination to root cdma hera - don't know if it works or not, don't know if it's the same for gsm hero

I just wan't to make it more clear to my self. If I understood you ppl right, there is no possible way to root official GSM 2.1? Or am I wrong?
And does anyone know, how fast we will get rooted GMS EU 2.1 after it is released? Fast thing to do?
Also first part of OTA (YouTube update), i hope it didn't take ability to root from me?

There is no known way, yet.
There are already rooted GSM custom rom's based upon the 2.1 releases which have happened so far. It takes dev's a few hours from release usually to get them into the public domain.

If you installed the latest ota just downgrade & root.
For rooting the europe 2.1 I aim to be as fast as last time but it depends on when it is released.

Well then IMO you have to add to your guide.
"First, you need to downgrade your ROM to 2.73.xxx.x"
Like: "Also downgrade 2.73.405.93, even if it starts with 2.73...".
Btw: If I would flash Part 2 OTA update, 2.1 andoird, would it be as easy as now, to downgrade?

You can't downgrade once you flash part 2 as the version will change from 2.73.xxx.xx
Yeah I do need to change that, I just couldn't remember it when I was writing it!
Hey guys, im looking for a friend of mine how to update a desire from 2.2 to 2.3, he doesnt get an update if he goes to about phone -> check for updates (it says its latest version), so i was wondering if there is a method to flash the update over cable on the phone. to be clear, he would like the stock 2.3 from htc not cyanogenmod or custom roms.
thanks for the help guys
Its not out yet. If your friend has a branded Desire, it will take longer for the update to go through because carriers are like that. If it's unbranded then the update should come through straight away.

thank you very much, i searched for that ont he internet and mostly it said coming may so i was confused... thanks anyways guess he needs one of the custom roms ^ ^

There are plenty of 2.3 custom roms but he will need to root the phone first.
Otherwise you have to wait as above!
Ye, thanks, checked them a bit.
I've had my a100 for about three weeks now. At first I didn't see a need to root but I find the empty space on my screen such a waste where I could fill with icons and widgets. And then there's the bloatware - ugh!
My question is should I just root HC or wait for a stable ICS Rom? I really don't want to keep flashing back and forth either. Just wanted some opinions, thank you.

I have been going back and forth between HC and ICS and now I am on my HC waiting for a "stable ICS rom." Hopefully what has been posted in the 2nd link will be the ICS fixes i've been waiting for (touch screen fixes...compatibility etc)...

If youre just rooted then you should still see the update. So long as you dont change anything like build.prop, or remove any OEM files you should be good to go with the OTA. Also download OTA Rootkeep app and protect root now. Once you do the OTA just restore root via the app and thats it. No need to reroot with any other method.
ICS will not resolve your problem with the empty spaces from both sides (landscape mode).
Rooting may be.If you change the DPI in build.prop you can fill the whole screen but then in portrait mode you will not be able to see everything.Actually this spaces are still empty in portrait mode but are up and down.
Hello can anyone write a tutorial that will send any T989 with custom ROM and RADIO to it's original configuration so Kias can upgrade phone to ICS ? Let's say I am on Darkside with radio from Blaze 4G and I do have my original ROM backed up with ROM Manager ....now what ? From what I understand I need 3 things to make a smooth transition.
1. Original 2.3.6
2. Original RADIO
3. No Custom Recovery (no clockwork)
I may be incorrect on clockwork but I know for sure radio and rom has to be exact. So is there anyone can write a tutorial that will put any T989 and ANY Custom ROM to it's original state ? (I hjope it's even possible)
Thank you.

I guess that link is for old stock ROM (ULKL1) . They upgrade it one more time before IcS to UVLDE. There is thread on general section.

Is that mean I'll have to do an upgrade before I can do ICS ? Or I can just go from that straight to ICS ?
if you find the UVLDE md5.tar file in whatever thread it is in, you only need to go back to that STOCK version, there is no further update from that.
You can then do the ICS update after that.

Why not wait a few days for us to play with it first? Updating through Kies could render your device unrootable. With what I have been reading/hearing they may lock the bootloader and make it impossible to root until a security flaw is found and exploited. This could take days to even months if even possible. Like I said, my advice is to wait.
