[Q] Noob proof rooting - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just received my first smartphone and am really excited about it Aaaand ... I'm totally new to Android and the whole rooting & Custom firmware process
I want to root to Backup my TA before unlocking BL and was looking at zxz0O0's guide. There are now quite a few versions of the z1c dual recovery from NUT. I am on Android 4.3. Can I simply use the latest version?
Thanks a lot!

latest version is appropriate 2.7.99 (not tried it yet) as I rooted mine before KK came using 2.7.95

perfect, thanks for the information. Will give it a try and hope not to brick anything

I think it's safe to say that version 2.7.97 does not properly work so make sure to not use that version.

Hey friends...
My friend has recently bought a defy in India... It came with eclair...
Now he wants to upgrade to gingerbread... But he doesn't want to root... So can anyone please help me? As I'm a Samsung user, I don't know anything about Motorola devices or how to upgrade them... So I would appreciate a noob friendly guide...
Thanks...
u cannot upgrade to gingerbread w/o rooting...defy has got the official froyo, not gingerbread..
please read the pinned posts if u wish to know how to flash a custom gingerbread rom..

He can update to Froyo, but there is no official Gingerbread update from Motorola for the Defy (and there will never be one).
If he doesn't want to tinker a bit he won't get Gingerbread (there are also 2.3 ports of the Defy Plus that work quite well, but rooting is necessary to install anything like that).

You can mess around with your Defy s much as you want, root, install ROMs, flash sbfs... And you can ALWAYS go back to the stock Foyo/ Eclair firmware your Defy came with. Even if something went wrong and the phone doesn't boot anymore, just flash a stock clean Motorola firmware and everything's gone (the ROM you had before, also the root). So also if your Defy has a hardware problem and you want to send it back, just go back to stock before and you don't have to worry about the warranty.

I don't think so. if you changed the bootloader version you will be stuck on some higher kernel and can not easily go back.. (that was what happend to epsylon3 - one of the main devs of CM9 for defy) - so if you flashed official froyo - you will not be able to go back to eclair for example. (as is also pointed out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537)
A piece of advice: read a lot (here in this forums) before you flash something. It help you not getting in trouble with your phone.

There is no point in using defy with the buggy stock Eclair/Froyo ..
If u want to see the complete potential of defy Root it and Install CM7..
and yes you can go back when ever you want but make sure u take the Nandroid backup of the stock ROM that u r using and check whether the official sbf of ur region is available to download.so that u can flash it and restore the nandroid backup .. !!

Right, that was the only thing I wasn't thinking about. That is what is usually written in big red letters when there's something about these sbfs. But normally there is no need to change the bootloader version by installing the (not fixed) 2.3.4 sbf.
The only really current reliable options for the Defy imho are CM7.1, MIUI (and some versions based on it) and the Defy+ based ROMs (like MS2Ginger). With none of them you risk to be stuck somewhere - I flashed stock Froyo a dozen times without problems.
Thanks all for your replies....
I'll root and flash cm today....

Thanks, i'll review it -- any noob guide to root 4.4 directly?
Did u upgrade from 4.3 and previously rooted in 4.3? Or phone come with 4.4 straight out of box?
I am guessing you need to revert back 4.3 > use exploit to root > backup TA > upgrade > unlock BT > Root

If you follow the guide you will have rooted 4.4. Note that this rooting process will keep your bootloader locked and keep DRM keys.

Ther method of zxz0O0 is not downgrading anything.... I root the phone using his method and everything works better now.... BUT remember to backup your files from the internal SD, because you will loose everything

You can directly unlock the bootloader without TA backup but then you will lose your warranty.

if you want detailed guide, visit this http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/development/guide-how-to-root-101-firmware-lb-t2656698
it's for xperia z. but make sure that you download the files which are meant for your phone. take the help of my thread for the required files.
I dont think anything even happened.. I flashed the first tft file or whatever and flashtool did a bunch of stuff but everything is still the same from i can tell..
and whats the difference between flashing a file and rooting one?

[Q] Towelroot

Hello big guys.
I'm a noob when it comes to roots and roms on phones.
I have been using the offical touchwiz still and is a little interested in rooting the phone and installing cyanogenmod to make it work faster.
I've read that there is a one click method to root called towelroot right now, I want to try it because I don't really understand how to root with other ways on the forum.
And I'm wondering if anyone has tried it before so I can use it and move on to the next step of flashing a custom rom.
Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately Towelroot doesn't support this device yet. I tried earlier today
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2623635 this is the link to the everything thread for the captivate glide. They have root instructions there, and they're pretty straightforward
Good luck!
