no, there is no gingerbreak available to root 2.3.3 yet..
here's a reply from chainfire on his blog responding to people who ask if 2.3.3 can be rooted:
Posted by Chainfire on 01-06-2011 at 13:36:23
As stated many times before, GingerBreak only works on VERY specific Android builds. If it doesn't, there is little I can do about it - the exploit has been fixed in your Android version.
Yeah, i think the fix to the exploit got put in the android repository with 2.3.4, but some 2.3.3 firmwares released after 2.3.4 (e.g. the arc's) have included security fixes from 2.3.4 (e.g. in the list of fixes in the 2.3.3 update sony said theyve included the fix for the bug which potentially leaked userdata to apps).
If this is the case and the exploit which gingerbreak utilised is now patched in the arc, it's likely we arent *ever* going to see a gingerbreak which will root 2.3.3
Think i might finally have to unlock my bootloader...

Oh, i dont doubt we'll see one eventually... it just that it'll be via a new exploit, not just via a minor tweak to gingerbreak. The point is that it may be a while, and i dont think i can be bothered to wait that long, because i just realised something:
If the only reason i'm holding off unlocking the bootloader is that SEUS wont work any more, yet i'm refusing to use SEUS to update anyway because there isnt a working root for the latest update, then i think i might be an idiot.
i'm also thinking about unlocking, dont care about updating with seus. about warranty?

I dunno... if the thing fails physically, e.g. screen goes wrong due to manufacturing fault, buttons fall out or something, then i suspect you might get it fixed under warranty regardless (but SE might be hard nosed bastards about it, who knows). It's a risk...
The way i see it, the thing most likely to happen is i balls it up flashing a custom rom or something, which is my own stupid fault anyway (hope we get a working nandroid/recovery at some point though)

But other than rooting there isn't potential benefit from unlocking the bootloader at the moment (Or is there anything and I missed it ). That could be stopping many from unlocking, which is in my case

the only good reason to root the arc is to remove all the bloatware that can speed up the arc exponentially, then the customization thing, that's a big plus for me and eventually the custom roms.
I haven't had the time to root my phone yet, but if I use gingerbreak to root Arc and remove all the bloatware, then update to 2.3.3, will the bloatware return or ?
Cause I don't really care about root until we can mod JIT, just want to remove bloatware.

I've been playing with the thought root or not root, but i'll need to know this few things before taking the final decision.
If i root 2.3.3, will i then still be able to get 2.3.4 and or 4.0 when it comes out, if se will support 4.0.
what does the 4.0.a features have that the 3.0.1.a doesn't have? and what is the difference.
And how easy 10/10 is it to update a rooted phone.
Thats all, i wanna know.
Search is your friend, but anyways...
Unless you have an unlocked/unlockable bootloader, you cannot root v2.3.3 directly.
Rooting doesn't affect updates as long as you don't remove any system files/apps.
e.g. Updating a rooted Rogers phone:
New features: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199597
There's practically no risk since you can always restore the phone to stock using the FlashTool or PC Companion.
Okay, danke. Youve got your thanks up.

Root and remove it, no need to unlock the BL - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133650
I have the Verizon Xperia Play r800x, the bootloader is unlockoed, the phone is rooted and i removed some system apps.
- i did relock bootloader
- i temp removed root
- the apps i removed were, Sims, Tetris, Visual Voice Mail, Skype Mobile
It lets me download the OTA update, after its finished, it reboots my phone and shows that its downloading. but when it turns on its still at 2.3.2 and a blue box pops up saying Update Failed! So im just wondering how can i fix this problem and update??
Any help is appreciated, thank u
Can't OTA if any pre-installed apps are deleted. That includes games.
The only way is gonna be flashing stock and starting over.

Thing is, I've seen a fair few posts with this problem now.
I have this problem, but I removed nothing. I froze, then unfroze.
Thinking it could be a bigger problem than people think?

If your bootloader is unlocked or any bloatware is moved/removed, its not gonna work, no matter what.
Theres a thread in general and a thread in development on this already, take a look.

Well, it also depends on which unlock method was used. Mine was unlocked by the testpoint method by Alejandrissimo and I was able to OTA update with no problem. But it is a well-known fact that the other methods will soft-brick if you try to update via OTA.

You'd need an exploit in ICS 4.0.3 itself to do that and we don't currently have one.

you cant do root here easy way because HTC doesnt wont us to do so. ... thats all and simple as that. with another brands like samsung is the process short and easy. blaim HTC ...
android is open source... ICS 4.0.3 its not the problem at all!
If you really want root follow the tutorial at htcdev.com to unlock your bootloader and then follow one of the tutorials on how to install a custom rom (those are basically always rooted)... I'd wait for an S-OFF though.
Some pretty useful guides in Development section...
I found them fairly straight forward with no hi-cups along the way.
Always prefer a challenge over a click of a button

Not sure what you're on but you can't root a Samsung phone from inside Android without using an exploit which is exactly the same as HTC and what the OP was asking for. You need to restart the Samsung and put it into the bootloader same as on a HTC.

Not if you use HTCdev to unlock your bootloader, they keep a log of your device, regardless if you re-lock it.
They'll still replace your device if it's a hardware problem though.

As long as you revert back to stock rom and flash stock recovery you should be fine. Don't see the need to relock as it'll just show unlocked what signs will we have that we've flashed a custom firmware? On SGS devices we had a count number but using a jig we could wipe this back to zero and return to complete stock.
OK so we got a SE Experia Arc S LT18i with 1253-8238_4.0.1.A.0.165 ('prototype' model on loan from a friend = prehistoric!) and looking into upgrading the thing if at all possible.
So if I am correct it's a case of: 1st: Root, 2nd: Unlock bootloader, 3rd: Install recovery, 4th: Flash ROM of choice
Bootloader is locked and phone not rooted.
Tried using Flashtool to root phone but it is greyed out so tried Tools > Root > Force zergRush = fail, (not tried Force psneuter/Emulator ?)
Tried unlocking bootloader using Flashtool, but this also failed (SE unlock website wanted IMEI code one digit less than the phone reports?!! got a code by ditching the first 0 of the IMEI, but didn't work anyway - crashed phone)
Attempted to root using command line ADB method to push zergRush and execute the script, but this too doesn't work (phone crashes and reboots).
Fastboot? I have it installed but not yet come across any how-to's that use this (did I say yet? )
The apps available on Play Store seem to be automations of above methods for one-click users.
Further exhaustive reading/searching here and on talk.sonymobile.com leads me to believe that the first step might be to flash a different kernel version before it's possible to root, after which everything else should fall into place...I'm up for trying this but of course don't want to risk bricking the phone, so backing up first would be a good plan, *but* I need root to be able to install recovery! I know enough about booting operating systems to know that changing kernel version with a locked boot loader might just result in bork! This is where the expertise of you guys comes in!! Maybe you know that flashing another (similar?) kernel will be fine with Fashtool even without unlocking bootloader and rooting phone? Perhaps I missed a simple and easy way of rooting? Any suggestions very welcome - thanks in advance!
FYI: *I only run Linux* so pointing me at any of the windows tools on offer is of no help to me

Well it's not the quantity of info, but the quality of info! Failing that the filtration system used to distill the good stuff out!
Anyroads, I was still hoping for someone to chip in with something like "Yeah go for it, that will work fine"! or "Don't do it, try this instead"!
I'm believing from my readings so far, that short of flashing an incorrect radio, or interrupting a flash process, it isn't easily possible to brick an Arc?

I haven't tried this method.. I just posted it to answer your question.. Personally I wouldn't root using this method because I don't want to unlock my boot loader since you lose DRM-keys (TA Partition) and yes that will affect the low-light camera quality etc... Don't know about lag, but you'll definitely lose some of the premium feel....
If I was you and I didn't want to lose any of the things mentioned above, I would probably wait to see a new method to root without unlocking the bootloader. (Root for locked bootloader) that way you don't lose DRM KEYS and can make a backup of the TA Partition..
