Here is a tutorial. Stay away from windows partition makers. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Basic rules: Fat partition comes first, both have to be primary, respect file-system and partition sizes indicated by the developer of that ROM.

A2SD+ help plz (Mac)

Hi,
I'm about to update with a new custom ROM since the one I have didn't have A2SD+ and there's just not enough space (came with MoDaCo custom ROM without additions when I got it). But I can't find any guides on how to format my SD correctly with my MacBook, do you guys know any? And do I need to download Android SDK?
Also, how big is the difference between A2SD and A2SD+? I only have the 4GB SD that came in the box.
Thanks.
Can I use ROM Manager to partition my SD card?
EDIT: Sorry mods, should've posted this in General, I guess. Please move.
You can partition in recovery. I have a Mac too and that's the only way I did it.
The main difference between A2SD and the + variety is that Dalvik cache is also moved to the SD card when using A2SD+.
Thanks! But everything on my SD card will be erased, right? Will I still be able to update the ROM after? Or should I update first?
Sorry, first time doing this.
Backup all the contents of your card to your Mac first. Flash the ROM, then before booting up for the first time, partition your SD card. Boot up your phone and copy back the contents of your card to the FAT 32 partition. I used to set up my card like this: swap-0mb, ext2-512mb, fat32-remainder. Then convert ext2 to ext3.
Also remember to do a full wipe before flashing the ROM.

Okay, I will try that! Thanks!

HELP PLEASE - Rom Manager and partitioning Micro SD card

I hope I am now putting this in the right place but I am getting very frustrated. Decided to bite the bullet and rooted my Desire at the weekend. As I have W7 64bit, I decided to use the Tiny Core Linux method mentioned by benko286.
I installed a Modaco ROM with A2SD+ and so far so good.
Rom Manager allowed me to install the Rom from the SD card. I then used Rom Manager to partition the SD card with a 512mb Ext3 partition and a 32mb swap partition so that I could take advantage of A2SD+.
However, when I install new programs they seem to be going to the phone memory as the space on the phone memory is going down.
I copied the Rom zip file back to the Fat32 partition on the SD card and tried to install the Rom again from scratch using Rom Manager. All I get now is a big red ? and after a few seconds the phone reboots again.
What have I done wrong?
Also, if I use Acronis Disk Director to partition the card, there is an option for the Ext3 partition to be primary or logical - should this be primary and should the Linux swap partition be before of after the Ext3 partition?
All help gratefully received!
TIA

Apps2sd Card Help

Can any 1 help ive just rooted my phone to use the apps2sd, now when im opening it, it says that my sd card isnt partitioned and to do it now, on the phone, which doesnt work.
What im wanting to know is how to partition the sd card and how does the apps2sd card work?
Try this:
androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-manually-partition-your-sd-card-for-android-apps2sd/
You can partition from recovery. Note you need to back up the sd card as you will lose everything. You have to create 0 swap, 512mb ext 2 and rest fat 32 partition. Then you can upgrade to ext 3 in recovery.
Hi thanks for replys i have used rom manager which worked but what im wanting to know what does the ex2 and ex3 do and mean?
Right now i have partitioned my sd card when i open the apps2sd app up it says my card isnt partitioned correctly any ideas people

[Q] How to install Custom ROM on SD card ?

Hey guys ! The primary reason I switched to a custom ROM was because the HTC internal storage is VERY small. The /data partition is almost a joke.
I installed the Custom ROM of CM 7.0.2 and am pretty much back to square one. So, how do I install a ROM on the SD Card ? Do I need to format the card to ext3 or ext4 and then make manual partitions ?

Same reason here initially. Just install a rom with a2sd+ and you wont have any problems. You do need an ext partition for that tho.
You can also change your partition table than you have more space on your /data partition but you have to be S-OFF to do that.
Here's a tutorial to S-OFF: [Video Tutorial] Noob Proof Everything Desire Guide UPDATED (Go to STEP FOUR)
Here's the alpharev site (there are the partition tables): AlphaRev
Because your're using CyanogenMod you can use the Bravo CM7 table.
You can also use A2SD but your SD-card is slower than the internal storage. And yes for A2SD you need a fat32+ext3/4 partition. A tutorial how-to partitioning your SD-card is in the link above, it's STEP FIVE.
Thank you!

You had a bunch of system files on the sd-ext partition of your SD. Reflash ROM with full wipe.
I fixed this by copying the partitions again.Do it once more, shutdown pc, remove card rom reader, done.

ive copied all the files over in linux on both ext and fat32 partition but same problem?
Did you partition the sd card correctly: First fat 32 and then ext partition? Did you copy the files back in the corresponding folders correctly (fat to fat and ext to ext)? If you still have the backups, do the following:
1.) Boot phone into recovery
2.) Partition your sd card again (first fat 32, then ext partition)
3.) Stay in recovery, connect phone to your computer with linux, copy your backup in the corresponding partitions
4.) Reboot (may take a while)
If not working, i hope you still have the previous used sd card. If, download partimage:
http://www.partimage.org/Download
After installing and starting, backup both partitions. Then turn your off, put in new sd card, boot into recovery, partition sd card, reboot computer into partimage and restore the backed up partitions to the new corresponding.
