[Q] How to install Custom ROM on SD card ? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys ! The primary reason I switched to a custom ROM was because the HTC internal storage is VERY small. The /data partition is almost a joke.
I installed the Custom ROM of CM 7.0.2 and am pretty much back to square one. So, how do I install a ROM on the SD Card ? Do I need to format the card to ext3 or ext4 and then make manual partitions ?

Same reason here initially. Just install a rom with a2sd+ and you wont have any problems. You do need an ext partition for that tho.

You can also change your partition table than you have more space on your /data partition but you have to be S-OFF to do that.
Here's a tutorial to S-OFF: [Video Tutorial] Noob Proof Everything Desire Guide UPDATED (Go to STEP FOUR)
Here's the alpharev site (there are the partition tables): AlphaRev
Because your're using CyanogenMod you can use the Bravo CM7 table.
You can also use A2SD but your SD-card is slower than the internal storage. And yes for A2SD you need a fat32+ext3/4 partition. A tutorial how-to partitioning your SD-card is in the link above, it's STEP FIVE.

Thank you!

Change partition size on SD card

I have had a look on the forums and I cannot find how to do what I want, sorry if it is a noobish question.
I've a GSM HTC desire on orange (UK), running cyanogenMod 6.1.1. The recovery is clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 and the bootloader is HBOOT-0.93.0001 (alpharev)
I am trying to install RCMix S v2.0 Evolutionary Sense. It seems it requires s-off to do this easily and I also need to have my SD card (16Gig) partitioned with 1Gig of ext3. The current size of the ext3 partition is 0.75Gig (I know it's a silly size I chose originally). Once this is done I should be able to load the correct bootloader for the Rom and then flash the Rom itself.
I have just flashed my phone using alpharev 1.8 to load a bootloader that gives me s-off.
I wanted to resize my ext3 partition to 1Gig, I tried using minitool partition wizard (which I used the first time) but it won't let me resize the ext partition even after making room by shrinking the fat32 partition.
I am wondering if there is a way to do this without formatting the SD card. My worry is if my phone won't boot if I format the card to resize the partition because as I understand it some system data is on the SD card. Am I worrying about nothing?
Backup your sd card then use rom manager to create your ext partition size. No matter what when resizing you have to format.
Swyped...
GParted will also do it.
Might as well convert to Ext4 while you are at it.
I also couldnt find a way to resize the ext3 partition in windows.
So i made a full nandroid backup (incl SD-EXT) in recovery, deleted old ext3 partition and created a bigger new one. Then just restored the SD-EXT backup from recovery.
Worked well and no data lost
Edit: Is there an advantage from ext3 to ext4? I´m using Insertcoin A2SD V49
I think I will do a nandroid back up and just reformat the card how I did the first time.
777ace My desire is PVT-1 S-off. Also you've got the rom I am trying to install. So I think I'll flash the 0.93/CM7 Hboot that you have.
What are the advantages to using Ext4 rather than Ext3. I assume Ext4 is what you use? Did you need to flash a new radio or did you just do it by choice?
Ext4 is just the evolution of Ext3, and is supposedly more reliable and performs better. I upgraded to 4, because I read alot of people recommending this for many of the new ROMs coming out...a bit of research and the move made sense.
You should already have 0.93 HBoot, if you want to use RCMix (or most of the more recent ROMs). After that, pushing the CM7.img thru something like Android Flasher is easy as.
I flashed the radio back when I was on LeeDroid 2.3f and have kept it since. If you want to upgrade, you can also push the radio.img with Android Flasher.
This http://gavinroy.com/initial-ext3-vs-ext4-results should put things into perspective.

Data++ is a technique that was first implemented and tested by ClassicalDude. Using a re-laid out nand MTD, only the davlik-cache is retained in the internal memory. All .apk's are moved to the SD-EXT partition, where they are rarely accessed. This means a HD RoM can be fit in 180MB, leaving a lot of room for userdata which will remain in the internal memory. This results in a lightning fast ROM which stays fast through with no lag whatsoever during market downloads etc. Add to this the cool fix from coolexe and baadnewz that creates a dynamically resizable ram-disk for market downloads: and you have a great RoM that doesn't need to waste space for cache and will never have a market download fail!]/quote]http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992176

A2SD+ is a script which moves all apps you install automatically to an ext partition on your sd card. You must not do anyhting. If you use "move to sd card" in application settings, the app will be moved to fat32 partition of sd card. Android can only difference between apps in " internal memoory" and in "fat32 partition of sd card". Furthermore, with A2SD+ the dalvik-cache will be also moved to the sd ext partition on your sd card (which does not happen, if the rom is only using a2sd).
To sum it up, a2sd+ moves only apps and dalvik-cache to an ext partition on your sdcard, whereas data++ also moves some system apps to it. That's the reason why roms with data++ works with less space for internal system partition.
You can use Ubuntu to partition your sd card. If gparted is not included (I do not remember, installed ubuntu some time ago), you can download it from ubuntu software center (search for "gnome partition editor").
What do you think I should choose ?

I cannot say it, I did not employ with the advantages of each script. Compare both advantages and disadvantages, and then pick.
Last question ^^,
I made a GoldCard to install the official Froyo months ago, now I want to change my microSd to a 8Go one, do I have to make it GoldCard (to install a Custom ROM) ?

No. The goldcard has nothing to do with the rom. It's only connected to sd card. You can stay with the one you have.
Thanks a lot man !!

Can I get my HTC Desire to use the SD card as its app memory?

Any one know if I can get my HTC Desire to use the SD card as its app memory?

1. root it (alpharev/unrevoked)
2. s-off (revolutionary)
3. NAND backup the current ROM from recovery mode
4. flash custom HBoot based on your requirement (refer to table in alpharev.nl)
[by this you get more internal memory increased, maximum you can get
332Mb for data]
5. install custom ROM of your choice which uses different scripts to move apps
to sd (s2e, a2sd, data2ext, etc....)
6. NABD backup the newly installed custom ROM
7. partition SD card for Fat32 and EXT3 (1gb) using gparted
8. reflash it the custom rom or restore from the back
you can refer to rooting guide which is available in the xda forum, below url may also help you regarding custom roms

What our sarcastic friend Terepin is trying to say is that you can't really use the SD card as an extension of your phone's internal memory without using an A2SD ROM.

Root your phone mate, and then use a RoM with data2SD If you want to stay with HTC sense then I recommend Droidzones RoMs.
This one is Sense 2.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1143456
And this one is Sense 1.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045824
Note you will need a SD card class 4 and above, Read up about Gparted after you have Rooted your phone this will let you partition your Sd card Giving you upto 2GB internal Memory.
If your bored of HTC Sense, I recommend MIUI RoM its superb
Good luck
HUummm... why is it always so hard for me?
I tried to root with un Revoked which I have used in the past but that failed because I have 2.3.3 installed.
I then went back to my Froyo RUU but that failed because of the H Boot.
Finally I rooted with http://revolutionary.io and now need to sort myself out with a ROM.
Just a note: you don't need Gparted for ext partition. You can either format your entire card with CWM, or you can use free partition manager EASUS Partition Master Home to create ext3 partition and then convert it with alignement script from coolexe. It certainly saves time.

Only down side to using recovery its max size is 512MB. EASUS dont like because its windows app, I find it best to use Gparted because its Linux witch android its self is based on.

Just give some Roms ago mate, you dont like you can always jump to another one. if its more space you want look for RoMs with data2sd or data2ext.
I repartitioned my sdcard using 4ExtRecovery. 1gb ext4, and128k swap. Brilliant themable recovery.

Hi everybody,
got the same problem as the person who started this thread with the memory issues. Done everything except install a custom rom, which I am about to do.
(note: currently 0n 2.3.3)
Currently have CM 7.1 downloaded on computer and going to install....BUT every instruction i see requires me to have rom manager/ clockworkmod recovery. HOWEVER, I can't install these because ''this app can't be installed in your country''. unfortunately used to this.
So does anyone by chance have any links to instructions or have instructions of how I can install this without downloading any apps, hopefully an idiot proof version.(Not worried about saving a recovery etc....phone is basically blank.)
Also would CM 7.1 be a good start?? Is there any easier rom to install that still has the apps2sd feature which is the primary point of doing all this( maybe miui).
Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards,
rkdeane
Everything you need is in the Desire Developement forum - STICKY!
You don't apps, just root (S-OFF is a good choice too) and custom recovery (like CWM, AmonRa).

[Q] nervous newbie with basic questions.

Hi all. Sorry for these basic questions. I only just now got round to rooting, s-off, partitioned my SD card and downloaded a new ROM (latest Leedroid)
I followed this excellent video tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Now very nervous about the final steps;
Are EXT partitions backwards compatible, ie: EXT4 ok to use as EXT3 and so on?
(I formatted my SD card with a EXT4 but the ROM I want to use says EXT3)
Do I have to re-install all my apps again once the new ROM is loaded, and what about the ones I bought? How to re-license them?
Finally, is the Baseband the same as the Radio (or where do I find Radio info on phone)
Thank you for any help.
EXT4 is faster than ext3. I am pretty sure, as long as it's an rom which is not too old it will also support ext4. A search through the rom's corresponding thread might help.
Just backup and restore your apps with titanium backup. The license from bought apps should be backed up and restored. Never read about someone who has problems at this point. If you really have problems, contact the dev of the app.
Yes, baseband is just another name for radio. You find out your one in Settings > About Phone.
Before you flash your new ROM install titanium backup. Do a batch backup of all of your apps and app data. That way, once you've flshed your new ROM you can just install titanium backup again and reinstall all of your apps and data as they'll be stored on your sd card.
As for bought apps, they should still be available anyway as they're linked to your google account. So as long as you sign in to google on your new ROM with the same account the market should recognize that you've already bought them and make them available for you again.
If it helps...
Thanks for your reply.
Say that I want to be sure and create a EXT3 partition as instructed, do I still need to keep EXT4 I created on rooting procedure?
You dont need EXT4 for Rooting (you dont need any EXT partition for this at all)
Either keep it, or delete and make EXT3 its up to you, EXT4 is slightly faster though.

When you followed the Desire rooting guide you mentioned did you follow step five? If you did then you will have partitioned your sd card with ext4. Basically you only need two partitions on your sd card at any time. So now you have ext4 & fat32 (the main part of your sd card will always be fat32, with a recommended 1gb of ext3 or ext4).
If you check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16808961#post16808961on you'll see that you can use ext3 or ext4 with Leedroid HD 3.3.3.
If you do want to get ext3 then just run GParted again (step 5 in the guide) and this time select ext3 instead of ext4.
Hope it helps.

I did follow step 5 and have a 1GB of EXT4 already created. I shall leave it as it is.
Is Leedroid HD 3.3.3 safe to use as a first time custom ROM?

I haven't tried Leedroid myself, but from browsing the thread it has some good reviews. Closest one I've tried is InsertCoin, but it's all about trying a few and seeing what you like.
Glad I could help.
LeeDroid is safe for a first custom rom. Rather fast and have minimal lag.
Just to say thanks to all that helped / replied.
I went ahead and installed LeedRoid 3.3.3 successfully.
Took a little gamble on the radio update as the instructions did not seem to match my set-up but all is working well.
Might need to look for a ROM with bigger text size as my eyes are struggling
Cheers all

aurora rom flash

hi i have a desire with the cm7v2 hboot .
i am trying to flash the aurorav3 rom on to it ((http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268279)
but i cant get passed the splash screen
i did a full wipe before flashing the rom
what is wrong with it ?
Do you have the correct ext partition?
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
yea ext4 1gb
How did you do it?
I had huge troubles with that when I was using external programs like Easeus and Mini Partition Wizard.
Use CMD - it's pretty simple and really quick.
booted off a linux live cd and used the partition manager in ubuntu
Partition your sd card in CWM (if you use CWM) and it will work, i come from MIUI rom and i had 1 gb ext4 and i repartitioned with CWM to 512mb (big mistake, put 1gb ext4 )
It's highly recommend to always use either gparted or your recovery to partition your SD card. Other programs don't work well and can mess your SD card.
