[Q] Reactivating phone - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my phone back today after it was stolen. During the time i didnt have it i deactivated the service on it. Would it be possible to activate it even though its on a whole other ROM?
Specifically Its on Mik-G RC1
EDIT: I decided to call *2 on my Evo and talked to the customer service rep and I got service back on it. Thanks jesuspgt for suggesting it!

Should be possible to activate it. If not, there's no reason that you couldn't just flash it back to stock, activate it, and then flash back to whatever you prefer.
The more important thing to worry about would be to make sure that you get the Lost/Stolen flag taken off that phone if you called and reported it stolen. To get it taken off you'll have to call customer care and ask them to remove it.

you should be able to without any problems. It's still the same phone with all the same S/N's and what ever other numbers they need to activate.

I would do that but the problem is that my SD card was stolen. I'm going to buy a new one in a while and i have a backup of the card on my PC, but I just want to activate it as soon as possible.

You most likely will need to flash a Sence based rom. I think if you did it over the phone you would have to enter a few things throgh the dailer app.
And most definitely if you took it to a Sprint store.
Few questions though, when you say "deactivate" do you mean you had your account put on hold or canceled?
Did you report it to Sprint as stolen? I ask this cause if you reported it stolen Sprint would/should have flashed the ESN on the phone. If they did it wont work.

[Q]

Hi Guys,
I'm from the UK. I've previously owned a IPhone and I decided to try out Android and I love it. So I then purchased a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from a local phone shop. I bought the phone brand new and I was the first one to open the seals.
I had the phone for 2 days and today I was getting a message saying mobile network unavailable, emergency calls only, so I restarted the phone and that didn't fix the issue. I then decided to try my friends sim card and that didn't work, so I came to the conclusion that the phone is blocked or blacklisted or reported stolen.
So I went for a trip to the phone shop where I bought it from. The manager tried another sim card and still it wouldn't make a phone call. The manager said he would flash the phone and do a factory reset. So I was waiting for about 45 mins and he came back and the phone had SuperSu installed.
What is SuperSu all about?
is it a illegal software?
Thanks
SuperSu is there when the phone is rooted. I suppose the guy has the phone rooted.
A Heppieboeddah says, the phone has been rooted and while there is nothing illegal or wrong with that (most of us on XDA do it as soon as we get a new phone so we can remove bloatware, install custom ROMs etc), it's not something I would expect a legit phone shop to do as arepair.
I would ask for a refund as it sounds like the IMEI has been blocked, usually meaning it has been reported lost or stolen like you say. Even if it hasn't the phone isn't fit for purpose so you're well within your rights to request a full refund.
Then go buy a new phone from Carphone Warehouse or Phones4U etc, somewhere reputable.
EDIT: I wrote my initial reply on the assumption that you haven't modified the phone in any way and it is 100% stock, but I should have asked first, have you done anything to the phone... like installing custom ROMs? Is so then SU is just part of the rooting process and it may be that you have done something to cause the problem yourself. It would also mean that if you do need to return the phone then you will need to follow certain steps to return it to an unmodified state. Talk us through what, if anything, you have done since buying the phone.
Hi, the phone is stock, I didn't install any custom roms or software. As I was new to Android, I wasn't too sure about rooting.
But I don't understand why he put SuperSu on the phone.

SuperSU is part of the rooting process like CitizenLee said take phone back demand a refund and go to somewhere reputable and buy a Note 2
curious. after this "repair" the bloke did, could you then make phone calls?
i dont suppose you looked in the settings, about phone, status and noticed if you still had an imei number did you? before and after the "repair"
regardless, i agree with the previous posts and would definitely take it back, get a refund and get one from a known phone shop.

Returning SG3 to stock settings

Hi,
I recently purchased a Sprint SG3 on craigslist, but was unable to activate it through Sprint. They told me that the serial number in the phone was different from the serial number behind the battery which meant the phone was probably flashed to another carrier.
I have never rooted my android phones before, therefore am at a lost. The sales rep told actually told me about this website. So my question is, how do I go about restoring the phone to factory settings.. like if it was just out the box. Please help! >.<
Run this.(I'd go with the wipes data version). When it boots up it will attempt activation. If it still isn't working, open the dialer and hit ##72786#. Best of luck

None of what has been posted is going to help you. All the "reset" advice will not change the serial (MEID/ESN) back to what it originally was (behind the battery/back of phone).
What happened is whoever had the phone previous to you "wrote" a different serial (MEID) using software, either for the purpose of using it on a different carrier or what-have-you.
Since you're obviously new to this, the fix is to find someone who "knows" about these things to write the correct serial back to the phone (frowned upon here on XDA) because they have to physically connect the phone to a computer and use software to do this. Or you can just take the loss and sell the phone back on Craigslist and list is as a BAD ESN.
If you were local to NYC, i could help you out, but alas...

They deflashed my flashed BoostMobile EVO4G

Ok so I know I did the ultimate no-no with a flashed phone. BoostMobile tech support tried to update my profile. I know I shouldn't have done this. I called both Sprint and BoostMobile tech support for help. My Sprint EVO 4G, flashed to Boost, was being blocked by my boyfriend's Sprint Airave. This is the 2nd EVO4G I have had flashed to boost. The first one (lost forever!) was flashed for over a year, we had the airave then too with no conflict issues. Lost phone. Bought new one (sprint) had it flashed. Now it tries to use the airave.
Differences:: New phone is rooted with Synergy RLS1. Old one was not rooted and had stock ROM on it.
New issues:: CONSTANT notifications about voice mail update. (never had that before). Attempting any kind of call results in error from Airave. I understand WHY! I just want to Stop the BOOST-SPRINT communication and make calls like I did before.
Anyway, I told them the AIRAVE problem, and told them I had custom ROM, ROOT and FLASHED phone they said "No Problem! We know what to do". they screwed the phone up and then accidentally dropped the call. So here I am after days of searching, reading, contemplating, still without phone service. Booting the phone results in loop of ATTEMPTING HANDS FREE ACTIVATION. and many times while on. Under settings, System Updates if I click on update profile it says.....Previous DM session is working now please try again later.
Will I have to go through the whole flash process again? Since I just did this 3-4 weeks ago there isn't much I need to save on the phone. I have all the versions and settings numbers from the phone but just didn't know which ones to post.
Frustrated, Aggravated and Completely out of touch with the world!!!
I would have never gotten to days. After a few hours of no success, I would have just started over

yes I do appreciate the advice. And in moving forward that is the best choice.
Also in moving forward I am hoping that some of the senior members might have comments as to why the almost identical phone was now being blocked by the sprint Airave and getting the constant Sprint notifications of updated voice mail. Surely there is a way to shield the phone from the airave. Other than calling Sprint (no results) or calling Boost ( wrong results) someone has to have figured out a way to stop this.
Any speculations, suggestions, or comments?
What kind of donor phone did you use to flash the Evo?

That I do not know. I have not been able to reach the person who flashed the phone. I will ask that when I reach them. btw I have the original boost phone that was associated with my account before I flashed the first time. That was the donor then, I think. And I was thinking that I should re-register that phone before I flash back again with this 2nd phone. Is that thinking a valid thought?

I found the type of phone. I logged in under my account and it says the current phone is Sanyo SCP-6760 Incognito. I can use the account to change the the phone back to my original handset that I used for years and was the handset I used to fllash to the first EVO I had.

Yeah, I was gonna say, anytime you need to know what donor phone was used to flash your phone..just log into your Boost account and click on "Update Handset" this will tell you exactly what phone is on your account aka used as your donor phone. It will almost always be either the Incognito or Rant. ((But anyone thinking of flashing a phone, should never have this problem because you should always have physical possession of the donor used on your account..there is not one single reason why the person flashing your phone would need to hold on to your donor. Period. So always make sure that you ask for , and receive the donor phone used to activate your Sprint phone)))
That being said...Unfortunately, your phone is going to need reflashed again, and you definitely did not need to activate the previous donor on to your Boost account. You just needed to contact the person who flashed your phone and (hopefully) he still has your donor phone and will be able to pull your passwords (profile info ) out of it again and write it to your Sprint phone. (Like you already seem to be aware of) when your profile was reset, that meant that it did not match what was on your flashed Sprint phone. You'll need to (first activate the donor that was on your account before you just switched it to your previous one) and then update the profile (on that donor) and then put it on your Evo and you'll be good as new...OR just reflash your phone all together with the donor that you just activated on the account.
As far as the Voicemail Update issue...I have noticed this being pushed constantly to the Sprint phones also(including my Evo LTE on Boost) , I honestly don't believe there is a way to stop it. It doesn't really bother me anymore it just sits in the notification tray all the time. I imagine that eventually Sprint will stop pushing it to their phones. If I do ever come up with a fix for it though I will be sure to try and look this thread up or pm you with it. Good luck with getting your Evo back online...and word to the wise..never call Boost for anything if you have a flashed phone on your account...First off they will trouble shoot it as if its the donor phone..Second, their standard protocol is to Update the profile, and/or Factory reset the phone, either of which will interrupt the service on your flashed Sprint phone.

Why not steal a Phone and have it for FREE!!

Just want to verify this:
My daughter lost her cell and I’m told by Sprint rep that she can put a restriction/flag on the phone so it can’t be use or activated. Now here is my issue; after I told her that I have a backup phone that I want to activate on that account she ask me if I had a screen look on my old phone because once she removed it from the account it can be activated on any other account with no restriction. Pretty much a clean ESN after the swap.
To my understanding once a phone is flag only the owner can call sprint and have the flag remove. This doesn’t make sense to me because people can just steal ur phone wait few days until you put a phone on your account and then activate it under their name and have a free phone.
If this is true is another reason to not pay for insurance because people will still take ur phone if they know they just have to wait couple of days and
You were told wrong, or more probable, you were told poorly. Once a phones serial number (ESN) has been flagged as lost/stolen, the only way to make that phone work on a network again is to flash it with another ESN (which usually a thief would not know how to do).

How do I clean the ESN?

I finally got a new phone and I want to sell this one off eBay however I want to make sure this is sell ready. I went back to stock rom am I good to go or do I need to do anything else?
Well, you might be a little confused on what the ESN (Electronic Serial Number) actually is...
In short, if the phone can get voice and data service by signing up through the provider, the ESN is clean. If you are currently using it on a voice/data network with no issues, the ESN is clean. An ESN is only blacklisted by a service provider when reported stolen or you didn't pay your bill for too long. At that point, any attempts to sign up new service for the phone will be rejected, and the attempt to do so is usually reported by the provider.
The ESN is programmed into the firmware of the phone itself when it is manufactured; note that it is not programmed into the OS firmware ROM, but the firmware on the phone itself that contains things like the PRL (preferred roaming list) and other information the data modem needs to make a data connection. This firmware is independent from the OS and usually never changes except when updating the PRL or activating it for first-time use. The ESN is then linked to your phone service account with your provider unless you cancel service, report it stolen, or possibly if you stop paying your bill for too long.
The ESN can be changed with phone programming software (QPST, CDMA Workshop, etc). However, this is very illegal and I never advise attempting to do so. A change in the ESN is also detectable when it differs from the ESN/IMEI sticker usually under the battery. Because of the illegality of this, I will give no further details. If you stole the phone you are trying to sell, the ESN will come up as stolen when the purchaser of the phone attempts to register it with the service provider.
Hope that helps.
If you did steal the phone, karma will catch up with you

Yeah I am a bit confused, I once tried selling my old S3 off eBay that my mothers boyfriend gave me but the buyer couldnt activated so i had to clean the ESN. I didnt steal this phone I bought it off eBay and used it for a month then got the Note 5. I just dont know if rooting and installing a custom ROM can mess everything up and the new owner won't be able to activate the phone.
I went ahead and unrooted the phone and reverted it back to stock ROM. So is it safe to sell this phone or is there more I need to do?
Also thank you.
Check the esn/IMEI on swappa. That will tell you if it is clean and sellable.

With that said, it sounds like to me your ESN is clean because it hasn't been reported stolen and is not associated with a delinquent account. It just sounds like you rooted the phone and installed a custom ROM. There is nothing wrong or illegal about that, but it usually does void the manufacturers 1-year warranty. There is no need to un-root and go stock when selling unless that is how you want to sell it or the buyer requests it.
Bottom line: Rooting the phone and installing a custom ROM has NO impact on the ESN, and vice-versa.
You're very welcome, sir.
