Why is windows phone not possible? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

why is it not possible to port windows phone 7 on the desire hd, when it's possible to port it on the hd2?

It would be possible, it wouldn't be legal though. The Desire HD does not have a license to use WP7. That is the biggest hurdle. I don't think any dev here would want Microsoft Legal chasing them, plus it would be against XDA rules.

but why can we do it then on the hd2 when it's not legal? or does the hd2 have a licence to use wp7?

I think he/she is talking about WP7 on HD2.

Maybe, it would be. But I think It's much harder than porting WP7 to HD2. And, it's illegal too

First of all why would anybody on right mind even want to port windows on android phone?
Second hd2 is originally a ms phone, while dhd isn't

HD2 is a MS phone, so has MS drivers, DHD is not an MS phone (thank christ for that) so you'd have to start from scratch and why anyone would put the effort in is beyond me, especially when if it worked it'd attract the might of the MS legal department. Is it possible that the HD2 port relies on some MS development leaks even?

Quoted for truth.

I would never use Windows Mobile on my phone. Android is much better, and in my opinion Win7 Mobile has a terrible user interface.

well here is one of the 1000's of "is WP7 possible on the Evo" threads in the Evo general section. Doing a search for windows would have yielded a bunch of these
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803726&highlight=windows&page=3
Actually guys, when it comes to WinMo I would also say why waste your time. Windows Phone 7 however is a different story. It's a really nice UI. That said, I believe it's just a nice UI. I haven't used the phone so I can't say it's a good OS or anything like that and since it's Windows vs Linux (Windows Phone vs Android which is based on Linux) I would say Android is better based on that alone. So I wouldn't discount it and say it's not possible or worth it. Those interested would just need to get enough developers interested because it would be a long hard road to do so. A very long, very hard road.
Why waste the time on the port. Its a nice ui but you can also recreate it on android. The market sucks on winmo. Im sorry I mean to say windows phone 7. This is almost as stupid as hearing the webos port people are doing. webos has hardly any apps. It doesn't even have shazaam. Why don't people just implument the only thing they loved from palm. And its the card multi task. Oh wait itchig thumb.

Gotta say a Windows Phone 7 launcher or WebOS launcher replacement would be truly awesome applications.
There really is no reason to bash the guy (and any of the previous requestors) about wanting to see a different OS on the Evo. Don't get stuck with "Fanboy Syndrome". If he, or one of the devs want to hash out a port, then it only benefits the community. It's one more check box we can put on the look what my phone can do and your iPhone can't list.
Personally, I wouldn't use it, but there are things I miss about WinMo and I can see why some people would want it. Some businesses only allow WinMo for work. So what's wrong with wanting an image one can flash during the day at work, then flip on a Nandroid of the user's favorite Android OS?
I REALLY miss having OneNote integration; however, that's not enough for me to make the switch. Yes, WP7 looks nice, but it can't even multi-task!!! Seriously? Just keep me with WinMo 6.5 and have a nice day, Microsoft.
I would also like to see this happen
Lets think about this: We have seen Android on WinMo, Linux on Android, Android on PC, OS X on PC, PC on Linux AND OS X, and our fellow XDAers are working on WebOS for Android(which I personally am excited about)
The answer to the !!WHY!!GRRR!! fanboy questions is simply BECAUSE WE CAN! You can't honestly say that if it was released you would not at least read the thread and look at the cool screen shots OR try it once, the whole point of XDA is pretty much "because we can".
Oh, and brush up on your WP7 info, engadget wrote an article on how Microsoft is now allowing apps to run in the background like they should have from the start, so I'm fairly sure that in the competitive mobile OS environment, multi-tasking is coming to WP7 soon.
You guys bashing on this guy are ignorant. Why did people port Android to hd2 or the iPhone. Answer is someone wanted it and they could. If he he wants wp7 so be it.

And I was called fanboy...
I'm open minded. Before switching to android I read about android and wp7 (already familiar with symbian, wm 6.3 etc etc) and weighed up android was by far the best.
Not sure how I can be a fanboy before even trying the OS? As an IT systems engineer, I often have to compare products and decide on what's the best. Doesn't mean I am an acronis fan boy, or a HP storage works fan boy or quest fan boy... just because I believe them to be the best for the job by comparing them to other products.
Fan boys believe their product is the best for no reason. Without comparison or even exposure. It's best because they can't believe they could possibly be wrong about their product or could have made a bad decision. This is not me. Learn what something means and about the person you call that something before using in a thread and making yourself look foolish

Funny that others didn't think that about me when I said I like WP7, which resulted into instant "you're an WP7 fanboy". Sorry to misjudge you, but you can understand why I thought that.
P.S.: Are we talking about WP7.5 here?

IOS is compiles for specific hardware, unless you get an idevice running wp7 natively there's no hope it will be ported to the current wp7 handsets.

Port Windows Phone OS to S3

I hope I don't get flamed but I just wanna know if this is possible. There is a windows phone with the same specs as the S3 not released yet (forgot the name of it). and i would also like to know why it cannot be done if so.
Anything is possible. Is it likely someone will go through the trouble of trying to do this when you can just buy a WP8 device? Probably not.
Also, just because 2 phones use the same SoC doesn't mean they can run the same software without issue.

One problem is that WP8 is not on open source like Android. Your phone needs a license to use it.

There is much more to it than this. Development section is typically a wysiwyg thing these days. You aren't going to see much more new roms made for Desire, let alone porting some new stuff to it even if it was possible.

No, impossible. I've heard they did port it for Desire HD2. Don't think they are gonna do it for the old Desire. You could always download Launcher7 from the playstore, it's the same.
