[Q] Building CM7 from source, wrong WiFi calling apk - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

[edit] Decided to post this in the Development Q&A thread... I will look there for any replies.
I've been following the FAQ for building CM7 from source, and was at the point where I needed to pull the APK's from the phone. On my phone (T-Mobile G2) I have MS-HTCVISION-KNT20-02.apk, which I believe (from another post on another forum) to be Froyo, and the extract-files.sh is looking for MS-HTCEMR-KNT20-02-A0-GB-02.apk which I believe to be a Gingerbread version... Since I rooted the phone, and flashed the CM7.0.3 ROM, I don't have this apk. Where do I find that?
Besides not sure what I will get when I build from source, this may be the root cause of some "quality" issues I'm having using WiFi and WiFi calling (weaker signal than I expect as well as a dropped call -- all in an 800 sq/ft apartment with a decent N router.
Any help would be appreciated.
Tommy.

So Many ROMS - What works in one may not work on the other - How to choose?

Hello everyone,
While i'm sure this must be a hard decision for most people, I am currently trying to decide which Rom to go with myself. I see there are about 5 different roms based on Froyo (2.2) and while i've tried reading pages and pages from each Rom post i've found out that what work in one may not work in the other.
So with that said how do you pick a rom that offers everything (if there's even one out yet?)
If i'm not mistaken Fresh has 4G issues and Tether doesnt work (not that tether is an issue but it'll be nice to have)
OMJ has music steaming issues, has working tether but camera is set to 3MP
I also see that most roms remove the Sprint apps (which i'm cool with except for the Navigator).. is there a way to get the Navigator back?
Decisions, Decisions.... Decisions....
The WiFi Tether issue isn't an issue with the rom. It's still a work in progress for full 2.2 support and it's possible to get it running if you flash a different kernel. Unfortunately that kernel has the adverse side effect of making the camera 3MP. Keep checking the wifi tether google code page to see when they release a fully working version for 2.2.
fresh has never had 4g issues.
4g confirmed working on all froyo betas and releases.
I can only comment on fresh bc that's the one I've used. I have no issues with 4g and tethering works great with netarchys 3.7.6c kernel although the back camera drops to 3mp which I'm fine with..also, fresh takes out the Sprint and some HTC apps but leaves them in a folder on your SD card in case you want to install any like navigation.
I'm sure you can adjust any of the roms to your liking, just play with them

I like Fresh's rom for HTC Sense. I am currently still running the CM6 nightlies tho. No 4G in my area so not a big deal for me.

This thread really belongs in the Q&A, as it has nothing to do with development.
However...
My best advice would be read through the threads for the respective roms, then try them out. Trying them out will give you the best information as far as what that rom has and what it doesn't have. but keep in mind, these roms aren't really made for you, they are just provided so you can use them if you want. They are ultimately made for the developers, and have their personal preferences built in.
If you want the sprint apps, I would suggest flashing fresh at least once. Although I'm not sure if he does it anymore, he use to put all the removed apps into /sdcard/fresh-removed-apks and you could reinstall them from there, on any rom.
It's all about one's personal choice when it comes to custom roms. They are all made possible and available by the wonderful devs. so you can flash as many of the roms you like. Once you see one that works good for you then go with it, that's what it all comes down to.
Nibert, Thanks i'll keep checking the post you mentioned.
Fazzmanic, not that i know for a fact that FRESH has issues with 4G. The only reason i said that is because there are at least 2 post in the ROM's thread from users who reported 4G not working... that's all.
ervman1, Does Fresh have that kernel you mentioned or you have to install that kernel after flashing the rom with Fresh?
bdelbenes, I like the HTC Sense myself. I've tried Open Home and Launcher Pro and they're cool yet I guess i used Sense at the beginning of me getting the phone so i got used to it.
Dougie2187, sorry for posting it on the wrong section but thanks to the Moderator who moved it to the correct forum. I have yet to flash my rom so i'm still on the factory 2.1 rom (rooted)... I guess i will do like most of you do and try one by one (well at least a few) till i find one that i like. I just wanted to make one choice and go with that instead of flashing my phone everyday LOL

Nandroid backups help make this process a lot easier. Fresh was my rom of choice for a while, Bugless Beast is really good as well but isn't up to date. Damage Control is really good too. But I've been using Cyanogen because it's AOSP.
It all ends up being personal preference, but those are some I would try out. Basically, flash one, set it up 100% and back it up. Then use it for a day or so, and try another one. And continue this until you find one you like.
on fresh 0.53 and 1.01 i had a 4g reconnection issue that i couldn't seem to shake even after doing the posted fix. it all seems to be sorted out with 3.whatever. avalaunch is another rom i can confirm that all the relevent bits work on.
froyo roms in general have taken a giant step forward since the OTA. i'd recommend downloading titanium backup and getting yourself the donated version then just try out whatever looks interesting. titanium makes the process a lot less painful since you can restore all your apps with their data in a batch process.

GPS Fix based on Leaked Vibrant JI2

Apologies if this has been posted beore, but has anyone tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782242
Evreryone on that thread is reporting imrovements. Maybe our i9000 already has a better GPS than the Vibrant, but I don't know for sure since I don't have access to a Vibrant.
Dearest devs, any thoughts about this?
I haven't, but we saw a GPS optimisation based on the epic firmware..
At this point of time though, I think many people are simply waiting for the final version of Froyo though before messing around again.
regret,i9000 don't use this update.zip of GPS fix
I think all the gps improvements have been incorporated into jm8. As everyone seems to be pretty happy.

No I'm not happy with JM8...
The signal isn't powerful, and not precisely at all !!
So, has anyone tried it on the international Galaxy S?
Already posted http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=781745
Update.zip for international bot of the first page
[Q] glgps vs agpsd
I have noticed that Vibrants and Captivates use completely different GPS software. Their daemon is called agps. Our international I9000s have glgps_samsungJupiter. Different libraries and all.
Has anyone tried to replace glgps with agps and modify init.rc to start agps instead? Since they have a working GPS fix we might be able to use that on the international Galaxy S. Isn't the hardware the same?
Sorry if this has been discussed before, budt I haven't foun it.

R800x data/3g stops working in cm

So I have this problem where when I am running Cyanogen Mod (currently 128 of ICS) on an R800x and the data will randomly just stop working, and the only way to fix it is to reboot the phone. Everything else appears to be working perfectly. I am running the latest firmware from that stickied thread in the developer's section. Any ideas why this is happening and how i can fix it? Btw as far as I can tell it's only the data that stops working, not sending/receiving calls/texts or wifi.

Yeah, It's like that with all us cdma users. I've brought it up and fxp doesn't even acknowledge it. All you need to do is turn the mobile data off then on again. It's annoying, but until a decent dev looks into it it's the only workaround
ive tried putting it into airplane mode, and taking it back out, but that doesn't fix the problem. how do you do it?
and is there a way we can politely point this out to them, without acting completely entitled? like if its effecting all cdma users that's a pretty large group.

Well nobody on the fxp team has an r800x, I think two of them have gsm versions. So they can't test it out, and with my history with fxp himself he doesn't seem to really care about cdma at all (doesn't least show he does). People have mentioned it before and nothing comes from it. So it's a lack of caring about our type of issues, they don't have time, or it's beyond their comprehension. Your best bet is to mention it to Pax, since he does a lot of things for cdma. Here's a link to his profile

Oh, and the way I do it is: setttings>more..>mobile networks> Check data enabled off (wait 5sec) then check it back on. If that doesn't help then you can try a fresh install to see if it does anything

thanks for the quick fix. worst case scenario that isn't too inconvenient of a fix. i tried sending both of them a polite message, and we'll see if anything comes of it, though probably not.
Hey,
Although I'm not on FXP team anymore (working with AOKP now <3 unicorns haha) I looked into this issue once.
Any AOSP based ROM (CM, AOKP) for zeus and zeusc use prebuilt radio interface layer libraries, which is a problem, because the ones we are using in CM9 are gingerbread, not made for ICS.
I tried reverse engineering it once but I seriously need to work more on that kinda stuff
I'll tell jerpelea (FXP) of this issue and what he wants to do about it, its not really in my power now. Although if I do find a fix then I will be sure to push it to gerrit, regardless of FXP's opinion on the issue.
J is the only one I know with an R800x (he has whole 2011 line + S + P + x10)
Hope I could be of any help,
Keiran

Ah ok I can see the issue now, I honestly never even considered that. I deved on gb for many years and I'm still not use to ics yet lol. I seriously thank you for responding. From what I can tell gsm users don't have this issue (maybe they do but the ones I've talked to don't) and even though it's not major to me it'd be nice to be on the same level you know? Since you're on aokp I may jump onto that soon, but thanks again Keiran, I hope you stick with developing you got a knack for it that most people don't.

[Q] WiFi reception in custom ROMs

The most difficult part about changing ROMs in my rooted Droid Incredible (DINC) has been WiFi reception.
When I tried "Touch of Blue" v2.2, reputed to be a slight and very stable mod of stock Verizon, my WiFi reception at home simply died. Constant reconnection attempts with no actual connection established.
The best experience was when I downgraded from Gingerbread (GB) 2.3.4 to Froyo 2.2 in order to root and set S-OFF. WiFi was easy and strong, especially at home (as you might expect).
Reading up on this here at xda & elsewhere on the Internet indicated that the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) minimum was set much higher in GB than Froyo (or perhaps Froyo did not even have such a minimum at all), which caused the problem. Some said this meant the ROM must be tweaked, others said the radio baseband, still others the kernel. A few thought a manual tweak of the RSSI settings was possible, but gave insufficient details.
In any case, my (still limited) experience with modded ROMS for the DINC has not been good.
Can anyone who has installed a modded ROM of any sort report about WiFi connectivity, and what it takes to get good quallity -- a particular radio, a particular kernel, etc?
Best ROM threads aren't encouraged but there is already this thread that's been allowed so please use that one if you want to know the best ROM/lots of different opinions. I'll be editing your title as your post is very specific so is fine to be kept as not focussing on the best ROM in particular as your title suggests. Please don't make this a best ROM thread though.

I just wanted to not have to load a bunch of ROMs to find one that works well with my WiFi. As another Question thread I just submitted indicates, I have had a very difficult time changing ROMs (at least on a downgrade path).
I haven't had any wifi issues with my DInc. Here's my current setup:
Albinoman's AOSP JB ROM RC2
Tiny's Incredikernel 9-21-2012
Radio 2.15.10.12.20
I also had no issues with the downgraded radio that comes with Froyo during the unlock process.
Yeah, I've had wifi issues on the shiny blue dinc as well. My router broadcasts at nearly max db, meaning I can pick it up 3 stories away in a masonry building built in 1964, and yet the dinc sometimes won't show full bars when I'm sitting right next to it, and forget walking down the hall. About to try Pimp my Rom, but if anyone has other input it's much appreciated.

I've never noticed any difference in wifi between the many ROM's I've run in the year since I've been a dinc user. My list includes:
Stock 2.3.4 Gingerbread
MIUI Gingerbread
MIUI Ice Cream Sandwich
AOKP Ice Cream Sandwich
Evervolv Ice Cream Sandwich
Ice Cream Senseless (My favorite for a long, long time, though it now needs a mod to kill the OTA nag)
Mamarley Linaro ICS
Evervolv Jelly Bean
Pons CM10 (best ROM ever!)
I know there has been an update to the Wifi kernel drivers for our phones relatively recently, but I've been unable to tell any difference. Wifi reception on my phone is very similar to what I get on my laptop: satisfactory, though by no means stellar. The similarity is understandable, though, as they both have low-end Broadcom wifi chips.
I spent as little time as possible on Froyo, just long enough to get s-off. Changing ROMs has been very easy for me on the dinc, but then I am a Linux user and am quite comfortable on the command line, so my 'easy' may not be the same as yours.

[Q] Questions re: Incredibly(^<Paranoid2.19.30Final, Sense-based ROMs

Long time lurker, first time poster (which means I can't post in the actual ROM thread). If my thread is inappropriate, please feel free to revise/delete as necessary. If additional information is needed from me, please advise.
By way of background: I have experience with flashing on this phone dating back to Gingerbread with IncredibleHD and MikRunny from "another site". I came over from a Samsung Fascinate where I was also flashing ROMs. So while not an expert in the actual development of the device, I would like to think I am somewhat experienced with flashing ROMs at least.
Incredibly(^<Paranoid2.19.30Final Questions:
With my current flash of Incredibly(^<Paranoid2.19.30Final, I am not running any themes and installation should be basically standard (though I did have to flash the October GApps package over it because there was no way to set up a Google account).
1. Aroma: The Revised OP still talks about the Aroma installer (I know that there have been two versions of the ROM zip in the past). When I flashed 2.19.30, there was no Aroma installer. Bad download or mistake in OP? Answered in Post #4.
2. Camcorder: Regular camera and FFC are working correctly. The OP says that the camcorder has 720p enabled at this point. However, I do not see anywhere in the settings to change the quality of the camcorder, and the camcorder is currently recording at 480p. How do I change the camcorder to 720p? Answered by The Man himself in Post #14.
3. Bluetooth in Car: With the various AOSP ROMs, when connecting the phone to my car via Bluetooth (not A2DP, just a headset profile), I get sound but it is garbled beyond belief while ringing. For any music buffs, the sound is basically the first chord of "I Believe In a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness...as the sound of a phone ringing. Per Rushead's post #710, it appears that Bluetooth headsets and in-call voice are not functional, which is a known issue in AOSP ROMs under ICS and JB with no fix. Has this been resolved in this ROM since "everything" works but LED camera flash? Answered in Post #9 via OP for Incredibly(^<Paranoid Collection.
4. Status Bar Clock: I want to eliminate the clock in the status bar. I go in to the AOKP settings via Settings > ROM Control > Clock > Clock Style and select "No Clock". This removes the clock from the status bar. However, when the phone goes to sleep, and I come back through the lock screen, the clock is back. Going back in to the settings as referenced above, the "No Clock" option is still selected...and yet there is a clock there. If my memory serves me, in Aeroevan's CM10 the option would be under Settings > System > Status Bar, but there is no option for the clock there in Incredibly(^<Paranoid. Obviously not a huge deal, but just curious if anyone has a suggestion. Answered in Post #9; works fine in CM10 so who cares.
Any information or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
VenomINC 1.3.1 Question:
While my primary questions are related to Incredibly(^<Paranoid as I am digging JB at the moment, as I am already running up my technical support bill I figure I will ask a VenomINC question as well.
I have tried the various Sense-based ROMs under ICS (but VenomINC in particular...same thing, standard install, no themes) and have a giant issue that does not seem to have popped up in that thread: everything works perfectly, with one exception: no audio comes out of the headphone jack. I have tried an aux cable in the car, regular headphones...nothing. This makes the Sense ROMs unusable for me personally, as I spend a good amount of time in the car for work and listen to podcasts/music.
As best I can tell, I believe that this only happens with Sense 4 based ROMs (UKB, ViperINC, EclipticSense over on "another site") but not with Sense 3.6 ROMs (Ascension, the Nitsuj ICS leak) or with CM based ROMs (including Aero's CM10). I will note that I have not tried changing the kernel - I understand that Viper is using the Chinese kernel, while some of the other ROMs have the leak kernel.
The issue was raised in the ViperINC thread by user artcotto in post #s 615, 634, 689, 691, and 693 with no resolution beyond Nitsua98 helpfully suggesting that maybe his headphones were broken (they were not). I have flashed the various updates to ViperINC since November and the issue has not gone away. Any information on this would be appreciated as well as I am a bit of a flashoholic and would likely go back and forth between Sense and AOSP (even though as noted above JB is pretty awesome).
Thank you for the great community and for any information and assistance you can provide. Thanks to all the developers for all the hard work you have done for our phone (which was apparently ancient and incapable of upgrade by HTC the second we bought it) allowing me to have a current phone without needing to buy a NEW phone.

Have you tried earlier versions of ViperInc? I am using 1.0.2 and have none of the issues I was having with 1.3.1 (which were not your issues - just lag). Another question would be - and I'm not sure this would really affect the jack - have you flashed the firmware?

Have you tried earlier versions of ViperInc? I am using 1.0.2 and have none of the issues I was having with 1.3.1 (which were not your issues - just lag). Another question would be - and I'm not sure this would really affect the jack - have you flashed the firmware?

I have not tried going back to prior versions of ViperINC, though I believe I have used from 1.1 onward and had this issue. I didn't mention in my original post, but yes, I have flashed the ICS firmware with the 0320 radio. Maybe 1.0.2 would be worth a try (though I'm not sure there is a way to get old versions of the ROM).
Re: [Q] Questions re: Incredibly(^<Paranoid2.19.30Final, Sense-based ROMs
This might sound odd. I've been on viper the longest. No lag. I installed super su n un installed their SU. Also got a busy box installer from the market n updated the phones busy box. I'm also running defensed but made sure I popped in rosie, but it's frozen n I'm running nova. Night n day I tell ya.

fwiw, i also have 0320 radio with headphones working fine. i was previously on ViperInc 1.2.0 and EclipticSense and it also worked fine.
Can you think of anything else you did with your phone around the time you first started experiencing the headphone issue?

Not that I'm aware of. As I mentioned above, I don't think it's a "hardware" issue, in the sense that even now I have no problems with CM 10, Incredibly(^<Paranoid2.19.30, etc. My best thought was that it may be something with the way the Sense 4 ROMs interact with the hardware, i.e. maybe the kernel on my particular phone? But I have no idea. At some point I will try flashing the "leak" kernel over the VenomINC install.
What I'm more interested in at this point is 720p recording on Incredibly(^<Paranoid2.19.30Final (And I am looking forward to Chilly throwing together a CM10 ROM).
If we keep going back and forth we can rack up enough posts to start posting at the grown-up table :good:
So the revised OP for what is now the Incredibly(^<Paranoid Collection answered a couple of the questions.
Bluetooth phone calls do not work in any of Chilly's ROMs.
I flashed his CM10, and the issue with the clock in the status bar is resolved. This leads me to believe it is an AOKP/PA issue; I am fine with CM10 anyway so no big deal there.
However, when I flashed CM10, the same issue exists with the camcorder. FFC and regular camera work great for photos; there is no option to change the camcorder to 720p.
Re: ViperINC issue: I flashed ViperINC 1.3.1 again, and this time I flashed the "leak" kernel over it. Still no audio through the headphones. I tried turning Beats Audio on/off, did not do anything.
Only issues I have with Viper is it will not connect to my media server via the native apps. I also have been experiencing lag but I think it's mainly due to lack of ram as a reboot usually clears it up. Also if you toggle gps off it doesn't work unless you reboot.

I did not install XLoud in the Viper Installer, just went with Beats. As I said in the OP, I know that my issue was previously mentioned but it does not seem like anybody ever found out the cause.
Bluetooth phone calls are not a dealbreaker for me. At this point, if the 720p recording is actually working, I would be happy with CM10 as a daily driver (though I may check out Evervolv as well to see what 4.2 can do). I just can't find the setting...
So what I think I pieced together: the Chilly collection of ROMs does not have 720p recording. When he was talking about the camera being fixed 99.999% except for flash, he was talking about FFC only, and the ROMs do not have 720p recording. I am hoping I am wrong but confirmation would be appreciated.
It may be a situation like the DKStunna thread, where it was proudly proclaimed at the top that "EVERYTHING WORKS", except for the stuff that didn't that you were just supposed to know hadn't been fixed. When Chilly said in Post #875 that "Lol FFC can works ..led flash works but not with taking pictures...video etc works" that does not appear to mean that 720p recording works.

I had got 720p working but it caused problems so I removed it u caught the thread before the revamp
Currently working on most my roms is
FFC with recording
Tethering with 3party app
I will be implementing fixes for led flash
Blue tooth works but has some bugs
Mostly everything works with fixes that I will be implementing
The pa I upped has fixes already baked in ..I'm yet to try BT yet
Once fixes have been baked the roms will be fully functional minus 720p

That must have been what happened...I have kept up with the thread fairly regularly and thought I saw that 720p had been figured out, but as you said that must have been before it was pulled. I was confused why nobody was mentioning it in the thread considering it would have been big news.
Chilly, thanks for the response, and thanks for all the hard work you do to make the phone feel like new. We're lucky to have such talented devs keeping our device relevant. Keep doing what you do! :highfive:
To the Mods: that should wrap up this thread if you want to lock it. I do not believe there is an answer to my remaining question about ViperINC and audio through the headphone jack.

Hehe even the mods have moved on...
Once everyone leaves this device Verizon will update it like the thunderbolt.
Sent from my Nitsy CM7.
I don't think it was mentioned, but did you try a reflash / redownload?
Probably not going to do anything, but worth a shot.

Sweet. I'm locked in my phone till November so I'll be like 1 outta 12 people left with the phone rocking ICS. Sounds exciting
Can usb tethering be done in cm10. I saw the WiFi app thread but nothing on usb.
Not to bump an old thread, but since I still can't post in the actual development thread: Chilly said in Post #1369 of his ROM thread that "No such thing as 100% but yes everything should work other then rotating hard keys bust out the champagne!"
Therefore my question is, once again: how do you change video recording quality to 720p in the camcorder? There still doesn't seem to be an option for it. Any info would be appreciated.
