Was wanting to root a friend's new EVO while they're at work and using their old phone.
Yeah, the phone should still activate OTA
Just got rooted and it won't work trying it online..And manually hitting ##786 does nothing.
Should work. Did for mine, but you can always do a nandroid then unroot, activate, re root. The longer time spent will be on activating it.(if your familiar with rooting.)
Sent From My HTC Evo 4G Using Tapatalk On The Now Network From Sprint.
##786# will not do anything if it's a gingerbread rom. You will need to press #*#*786*#*# that is the programming for gingerbread. But even still it will only work on sme roms and only if you have the MSL code that Sprint has. Plus you need both your mdn and msid only sprint has that.
Guess I'll unroot in the morning. It's on CM7, guess it won't work on that. Faster to start over than figure out a ROM that will let me activate.
#*#*786*#*# didn't bring up a menu though..

Have personally rooted dozens of EVO's prior to activating , flashing custom ROMS on an un-activated phone is silly . And in related news, Common sense is getting harder and harder to come by.
if #*#*786*#*# just sits there and #*#*786*#*# shows in the dialer then it is not a recognized programming code. If you put #*#*786*#*# in and it disappears from the dialer then it recognizing the programming code but it won't work with the rom.
i was just thinking you're probably going to need.. at the very least.. be on a sense rom..
so i wasn't surprised if CM7 wasn't working.
I just activated on a rooted evo. it was pretty easy. i switched back to sprint and brought my evo back over to sprint
Yeah, you have to be on a Sense ROM, for sure....
Just jump on Sprint Lovers Rom for the time being. I know you can activate from there with no issues.
Ive had a couple aosp roms and activated no problem. It just did them OTA and was done in about 30 seconds.

Im really not sure what my problem is but basically I'm in a spot where I normally have 2-3 bars of 3g and now I am getting kicked into 1x and wont come back, particularly if I get a text message. I also haven't seen that triangle icon in a long time (not that it should be too often, but in the tunnel to NYC it should pop up and doesn't.)
I've heard that calling into Sprint for something to "push" into your phone can fix this. Now if I call into sprint, what should I ask for specifically? They definitely aren't mind readers especially now that I'm not running their garbage anymore.
I appreciate the help!
I might be wrong about the terminology but I think you want them to re-provision your data service.
You can actually do this for yourself from the settings menu but I have had friends and a couple family members who had much better success having Sprint reset it on their end
Did you try updating your profile and your PRL? that is if you are still running a Sprint rom and if you aren't are you on the newest radio?

CM6 doesn't have any Sprint/hands free activation features because it is full AOSP
So you know they will try and have you provision it on your end first and to do that you must be running a Sense Rom with all the provisioning codes able to be used the ## codes. I myself prefer baked snack and the codes worked for me when I used it. I would try switching to another rom and try updating them then try sprint.

Well, for one CM might be causing the problem. I'm running CM RC2 right now and I love it but my data connection is much worse than on the sense based rom I've ran before.
Also, I don't think Sprint will be able to do what i suggested if you're on CM. I could be wrong about that also but this is why I think it might not work: When i got my EVO I gave my Hero to my little sister. I called Sprint to have them transfer the phone to her account and they couldn't get it provisioned because I was running DD2.7, another AOSP build.. Once we had her set up I flashed her back to DD2.7 and all is good.
So don't be surprised if you have to flash back to a sense rom to get your data problems sorted out.

Yeah I really love CM6, but I tether so my data is important to me =/
So if the issues are caused by CM, could I switch to a Sprint Rom, have them do what they have to do, and then switch back to CM6 or would that just bring the issues back?
what would be the easiest ROM to switch to if so?

Once you get all your data stuff sorted out you can flash back to CM, we're just suggesting you may have to flash to a Sense rom just long enough to get stuff fixed.
Quick question. I have a evo 4g on boost mobile. Everything works and its also rooted. This was how i purchased the phone. If i decide to flash a custom rom, is it going to bump my current boost settings back to sprint? Or is that only if i update the PRL or the radio? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sent from my Htc Evo using XDA App
I am not sure, but you can always nandroid the rom ( make a backup) and then restore , but a new rom does not change PRL or RADIO
I actually already did the backup. But that was the answer i was looking for. As long as those arent touched i should be okay.

would be interested to know how it turned out. I looking to get my EVO flashed to Boost Mobile and have questions if you are willing to answer.

To be on the safe side, get APN Backup and Restore, it is free from the market. This will save your APN (access point network), just in case there are any config parameters (like proxy settings) that are needed in boost. The poster above was right though, flashing the device with a new rom will not change your Radio, your PRL, or any of your PST programming parameters.
Good luck.
did u ever try flashing a custom rom? if so what happen?

You can flash a custom rom to your EVO, it wont change any of the parameters already in the phone. On the other hand, if you are able to "update profile" from your EVO there is a slight chance that it will affect that. SLIGHT chance. I have flashed Fresh EVO and Sprint Lovers without a problem the only issue I'm having is not being able to update profile even with Stock rom 2.2. I keep getting error "1012". Aside from that everything works great. Like everyone has said, always make a backup, you can never be to careful.
Cheers and happy flashing.

Sorry guys totally forgot about this thread! I'm on my second EVO and I've flashed SENSE and ASOP roms and have updated everything from the RADIO to the NV, PRI and such. Nothing gets changed with SENSE roms, however being that ASOP roms don't have a EPST, MMS is a hit or miss. Most of the time miss.
A fix for this is to flash a ASOP rom, nandroid backup, flash a SENSE rom and configure EPST and restore the ASOP backup.

It will work, just you will have to reset your mms. Dail ##DATA# and hit edit.

bought a used EVO on Ebay which has been flashed to boost and activated for me by the seller. Everything went perfect I rooted and flashed cyanogenmod as soon as I got home from the Post Office, lol. I would also like to mention that calling with/without google voice works perfect using the native android google voice app. The only thing I am still struggling with is conditional call forwarding and using Google Voice voicemail as the service for when people call my actual cell number. It still works as the voicemail provider when they call my google voice number. Overall I am very happy with Boost and the EVO. $50 unlimited with shrinkage is awesome. And when they say $50 they mean $50. As in 50 dollars and zer0 cents, thats right, no TAX!!!
Bostmobile Rom
Cyanogen 7 (nighties) works like a charm on boost for the EVO.
I wanted to use a Rooted Stock Rom for a change, I've been using Cyanogen 7 nighties for about 8 months with lil to non issues.....GPS locks for navigation, mms works, everything works just fine...I just want to try something new...like the new stock, it looks nice...love the clock/weather gatget...I want to try it out, but I lash the latest Rooted Stock Rom it messes up my mms and I cant get the ##3282# to change the MMS URL. Whats up with that? did the dialer code for DATA change in 2.3.5? or am I doing something wrong?

Using Cyanogen is a bit tricky since it doesn't support those codes. I've heard you had to backup the rom you were using, flash the new rom and recover the backup. That wouldn't over write anything, but would put back your settings you used in the previous rom.
How do I backup all of my flashed Boost mobile settings?
You folks seem to be a very knowledgable crowd, perhaps you can help me with this.
I just purchased an Evo 3d and had it flashed over to boost at my local boost store. Upon picking it up from them he went over a few things, most of which made perfect sense like not updating certain things because it will set me back to sprint but the one thing that did not is he said no hard resets. Problem being most if not every custom rom either automatically or advise you to do a factory reset from custom recovery. How am I supposed to flash my precious cyanogenmod with that hanging over my head lol? So I've been trying to learn how to flash using cdma workshop and qpst so that I can copy/backup all of the already flashed Boost info so that if things go wrong Im good. Also I hear some of the non-SENS based roms require little workarounds to keep data and mms going which also would probably require a copy of the Boost flash info. Things like the AAA shared secret and HA secret etc.
Any insight to this problem would be most appreciated!

Hey I can't seem to be able to connect to 4G? I called sprint and the guy couldn't help me and told me 4G was down in my area and every other zip code I gave him. Anyone in Astoria, Staten Island or Bensonhurst not seeing 4G?
I had to exchange my phone about a month ago and didn't get around to rooting till yesterday, but just in case I checked my keys and they are ok.
Was the guy B.S.ing me? should I just unroot and go to sprint store and see what they say.
I'm afraid that if i unroot and put 2.2 on the phone they will update to the phone to 2.3 on me and I will lose root ability. While if I give them my rooted phone (sense 2.3) they will not help me.
Any ideas?
What I would do is unroot, bring it in to the store and be very adamant about NOT wanting theupdate, tell them you were messing around with your friends phone that had 2.3 and hated it so you want to stick with 2.2..

Keeping exactly what you have... insure you have the latest radios. then call into sprint and ask an agent to continue on changing your *not sure what it is called, lol. the other 10 digit number that goes with your phone..*.. then have the agent walk you through it on the phone. he'll need to give you the MSL number **but you'll already have that because you'll go download MSL reader** Anyway. does anyone know what I'm trying to tell him?
Do not bring it into a store. if they say do to so, tell them that the techs there are assholes and disrespected you last time you were there.
When you go into a store, leave S-Off and have a stock rooted ROM on it.
As Lokifish Marz says, "SPRINT SERVICES ROOTED PHONES. Company Policy. ANY store tell you otherwise they are WRONG. Tell them to check the Device Solutions Portal." in his thread Sprint Service and Repair Policy FACTS.
I don't know if this would help, but have you done the reprovisioning trick already?
"Download MSL reader from the market and write down your MSL code
Dial ##3282#
Choose edit mode
type in your MSL
Select Data Profile
Hit Menu on your phone
Hit restore
hit okay."
Thanks tropicalbit. That worked. I also updated the radios. Now I'm running 4g.
I was on Azrael X v5.0 beta and epst instructions would not work. I tried to find epst to download and reinstall, but none of the instructions I found worked. I just installed a 2.2 rom that was in my computer. Followed the instructions you provided me to reload my profile and the 4G was back up and running.
Now I'm CM7.1.0-RC1
But now I have another issue, my camera is not working. front or back. Not in sense roms, not in CM7. This is perfect. Can I ask you a question about this or should I open a new question?
I don't exactly know about camera issues... the EPST deal couldn't of done that to your camera. What hardware version do you have?
I'm trying to remove clockworkmod on my evo 4g. I rooted using unrevoked forever last year and now need to take my phone in to have another number switched to my phone. I used the s-on tool without any issues and was trying to remove the clockwork mod cause i wasn't too sure of what they would check when i have my number switched over. Do i need to worry about clockwork or am i just fine with the s-on being displayed when they switch over the number. Any helped is highly appreciated! Thanks
If ur running a custom rom then id recommend going back to stock so they don't know u were ever rooted. Turning s on was a way to relock ur boot loader but u still have super user and busy box installed. Also if ur running sense then they prob won't notice but if using cm7 or aosp then they will for sure know the difference. Also if on sense a lot of sprint stores don't care that u r rooted. I took my gfs evo which I had rooted into sprint store to fix charger port and I told them over phone that it was rooted...they said they didn't care and to bring it in rooted and they would look at it. Turns out she got a new phone and they just took the rooted phone and didn't care. Id say call and ask. If they say they don't work on rooted phones them ruu it and take it in. Just don't tell them who u r on phone lol
ALSO...
Thanks for the reply Papa Smurf! As far as any any custom roms on my phone...i have none. I have spb 3d as my home thingy that spins around but everything is pretty much stock except for that clockwork. When i rooted i never loaded any custom roms to change the way my phone looked as far as icons and etc. So id say im stock cause i can change from spb 3d back to sense for my home screen without any issues. Also your right i do still have super users and busy box installed in my phone. I kinda worried about this though due to the fact that sometimes ppl are noisey and look through your phone apps, maybe ill just block access to my apps period that way they wont be able to look at them...hmmm lol. I was also trying to find the infamous pc36img...do you know where i can find multiple versions of it for evos? I am curently using hboot 2.10.0001 radio 2.15.00.11.19 if this helps with clockworkmod recovery v3.0.0.5.
ps if sprint cancels out my line due to "too much data roaming/data usage" can i just sell my evo without any issues or will there be a block on that phone from being activated?
Thanks a lot!
I've had them change numbers over the phone. You don't even need to go in. They just have you get the numbers under the battery and do it over the phone. Took me 15 minutes.

Thanks! Is there a way to do it online? The reason im asking is cause they are supposed to end my cancel my line today and i wanted to switch everything before they do it cause i wanna switch my evo over to another account under a diff name and number but dont want them to put a hold on the evo that has been rooted. Cause in my head they may block that phone from ever being able to be activated cause of the data roaming issues that they dont like, idk smh. Thanks though. Sorry if im asking too many ?'s i'm just trying to get everything figured out asap. And since s-on is now showing what does that actually mean? cause im still able to use my root required programs
I picked up an E4GT a couple weeks ago, had been just playing around with it, flashing a couple ROMs and such, so I decided to replace the phone I currently have on my plan (EVO 3D) with the E4GT. So I proceeded to installing a stock FH13 ROM on the phone and I unrooted it (just to be sure nothing would be getting in the way of activation). Now I've called to try and activate it twice (assuming the first time I called the person didn't know what he was talking about) and each time the codes that the Sprint representative gives me do not work.
The first code he gave me was ##725465#, and said to hit edit when I was taken to the next menu, however, this code did nothing for me.
Then he asked me to enter ##72786#, then to change the MSL, however, the codes he gave me to change the MSL continuously gave me the error "Invalid Lock Code"
Both times the person let me know that the phone had been "tampered" with and that in its current state, it could not be activated.
SO......what did I do wrong?? Do I need to be on a stock GB ROM?? I wouldn't think so, but am rather confused, as I'm sure there is a logical explanation for my issue. Or is it the phone? Has it been flashed for another carrier (Cricket, Boost)? I don't know, so I turn to y'all....gimme your input!

so you never had the phone activated?
Why not Odin Stock EL29 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101.
This will take you to a stock (although rooted, but will not make a difference for OTA updates because of the stock kernel and other code)
Then try what they are asking.
Nope, I've never activated this phone myself.
Unless anyone has any other ideas, I'll probably trying the stock EL29 and see if that works

Sounds like someone may have flashed it to boost or USC. Therefore the esn won't match because the original is no longer there. You may want to check out some of the guides for flashing your phone to another carrier. I've never done it but maybe you can reverse the steps. You may need a sacrificial phone with a good esn to do it. Someone on one of those threads may be able to assist you more.

So I've gone about google searching for flashing back to Sprint, most suggestions start with flashing a Sprint PRL and that seems to be the secret to everything....but when I enter the RTN service menu, I've found this phone already has a Sprint PRL. The MSL is 000000 which seems to mean that it was indeed flashed to another carrier, but I can't figure out how to get the original MSL back.
Not completely sure, but I think that number is under the battery with the serial number.
Nah....the MSL is a 6 digit number which I believe for this phone should be 725465, although I'm not exactly sure, but that's the number the Sprint representative gave me to enter originally....I dunno.....
I'm figuring there has to be a way to revert the MSL back to its original....just can't figure out how.....

CDMA Workshop is used to do just that along with some other stuff. just google it and rewrite the orig MSL.
Also since it is 000000 someone changed it via CDMAWS sprint phones do not have orig msl as 000000.
If the DEC under the battery (orig) and in the MEID phone info (programed) dont match then the orig DEC esn could of been a bad esn (blacklisted) or it has been flashed to another carrier....boost..etc with the donor ESN.
What does terminal emulator say when you try getting your MSL that way?
