[Q] defy green or red lens? - Defy General

is there a command that will tell me which lens i have? i'm color blind and cant tell or is there a app or some other way of telling thanks.

just take a picture (5MP), and if its less than 1MB you have green lens, if its around 1.5-2MB, you have red lens (of course this only works if you havent applied any camera patches!)

not quite sure, but green is better, but motorola couldnt figure out a way to make it work properly with this cpu, so defy-wise the red is better

Just picked up this thread - my images are around 500KB each, so I'd be on a green lens (in fact looking at the lens does prove this, just in case I preferred to do a simpler test). I've not had any issues with my camera though - what problems are there with the green lens?

There is no problem with the green lenses. The only issue is that for the moment (or maybe forever) you cannot apply a patch to record HD video (720p) which works only on red lenses. However 720p is not officially supported by this device so ...

Most of my pics are around 1.5mb but I have a few close to 1mb and none 2mb or higher. I think I must have the red lens

[email protected] video is supported by the green lens (ov5642), just look at the datasheet (or the iphone 4, which has the same sensor)! i dont know about the red sensor, havent figured out the exact type. btw, if you have green lens, you can improve camera quality (decrease compression, hence clearer images), and get about 1.5MB pictures too! Just read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966800

My lens is clear plastic, and the visible bit underneath the circle is black.
there is nothing coloured either red, green, yellow, or anything else.

I'm familiar with that thread but I'm not interested in patching the camera as I didn't buy Defy for his camera. For best results you should/could use a camera; even the cheapest will have better results than Defy. Now related to HD video mode maybe I should have mentioned that it is not supported officially by Motorola.

But most of the time we don't just carrying around digital camera. So with the Defy's 5mp camera is a good thing to have if there's sudden need to take beautiful naked lady on the run... So having it tuned (decreased compression to improve picture quality or some patching) should taking into consideration.

Throw in faster shutter and iso control and you can get a perfect naked lady on the run pic without motion blur

Yea, it would be awesome to have it. But I wouldn't ask more as my Defy already working the way I wanted it to..
* And I wouldn't be surprised if Motorola decided to push the next Defy2 or DefyHD with some kick-ass features.

Can someone explain... why are there two types of lens on the same defy..?? Is it a region specific thing..??

There is another thread which gathers statistics about green/red lenses:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103993
In general it looks as if the newer ones (bought since march ?) are mostly equipped with red lenses. But i would think that it depends on the distribution channel (country / provider ...).

does the red lens have the capability to record in 720p in RC0? If so, what is needed to do this?
I have HD setting on video mode but the record button does not work, any ideas?

CM7 here... On HD mode the screen goes black, and when i try to record, it crashs...
I think that i have a red lens...

I have done the update to 2.2 from Motorola. And now i must have the 720p option, but i don´t can change to that. The best record that i can do is in VGA. And i have red lens.

Probably its an improvement move from motorola to change from green lenses to red lenses, otherwise it would be the same.
As we know, red lenses supported 720p recording via flashing update patch and red lenses currently supported leak gingerbread 2.3.3. Red lenses also having higher picture captured size. Older Defy uses green lenses obviously having compatibility issues that pushes motorola to made the changes.
But I know our XDA Masters usually can sort out issues, so not worries...

How good is the camera

How would you rate the camera of DHD? Lets say 10 is TOO DAMN GOOD and 1 is VERY BAD.
and how about it if you compare it with Dell streaks camera?
Not good at all. Anything at night will be blurd. Even standing still allowing the camera to fully focus gets you a blurred photo. May have 8mpg but the lens is rubbish therefore you will never have that good of a photo. Video is ok all in all as its 720p.

what about the shots in day light? are they good? i don't take much shots at night but in day and some indoors, so how about them?
Daylight shots are, in my view, superb. Low-light shots are pretty bad, as the other guy said earlier. That's true of all camera phones I've owned though...

I use the camera not very often. The quality and easy to use are not very good
Camera: 2/10 (My HD2 take better pictures for sure)
Video: 5/10
I allready send back two DHD for replace.
(with blur problems).
HTC really disappoint me...
Now i will whating for the Galaxy S2 release.
Camera: 6/10
Video (daylight): 9/10
Video (low light): 4/10
The quality highly depends on how much light is available, I've taken some awesome camera shots and some which were really poor. If your buying the phone only for 8mpx camera, don't bother. It's not all about the pixels.

completely agree +1
For me the camera is not that good considering 8mp
I see areas of quality in certain parts of the shot with the rest appearing blurred, and yes the lens has been cleaned with the correct type cloth.
My first pictures made me think about the issue of round lens, square picture, the edges all looked blurred and only the centre was focused.
I have read that altering the default settings from auto make a difference, but not for me, it is only used as an emergency camera.
Video is OK, even 720p, but again, not a perfect device.
But when you remember this is primarily a phone saves having multiple devices
I think is great. There is a guide somewhere here you can use for better results

So has anyone of you compared the pics with those of a streak? It is my 2nd choice after DHD and since DHD's camera is not that good i am cosidering Dell Streak, so anyone who has compared them?

It seems the reds lens is better than green, because the greens is later date of manufacture
Mine doesn't look red or green, just clear LOL

Don't know either but it's a big thing as only red camera's work in the new orange GB rom, luckily I have red.

Quark's CM7 has that!
the red lenses are better, the greens have bigger image compression. you can check which lens you have by checking the size of a picture you take. if its over 1mb, you have red lens.

isn't compression purely software related?
Yes deanimo, but I think the default settings are different for both, with the red using less compression by default, but changeable in the settings

will green lense work with hd ? atleas in time

Hy i wans wondering are we the green lense defy owners going to have a hd recording? or its a hardware limitation thx for all following answers
Hello,
as far as I know, the green lens cannot, recording Videos in HD. (at least the green 'SOC' lenses)
afaik the green lens is a ov5630 lens, which CAN record hd @60fps (according to the datasheet). and this is the same lens the iphone 4 has, which is also capable of hd recording. so i dont know, maybe its because of the processor or something...
There are green 'SOC' and green 'Bayer' lenses.
The SOC lenses cannot recording in HD!?
i cant say it is impossible..but as of now it is nearly impossible..many devs are trying their best to get HD recording in green lens..moto GB kernels recognizes only bayer lenses..
thx for the answers so it is still hope maybe wen we will receive the unlocked bootloadder someone will cook a kernel thx for al the answers

Pink tint in centre of camera when in low light - faulty?

I've seen cameras in the past that exhibited a pink tone in the centre of the image. My G4 does this too, though it is only noticeable in low light. For example if I take a photo of the grey of my cord trousers in low light the very centre of the image will have an obvious pink tint. If I take a photo in average to normal light it's not visible.
Does anyone else have this issue? Mine is an O2 UK phone, brown leather back.
The same photos taken on my S6 have no tint at all.
it looks like a faulty phone ,-, try to get a replacement for it
I've just taken it back. Might wait till I can get it for a better price for the time being, especially now I've got it out of my system
I'm wondering if the pink you're seeing in your low light pics could possibly be the infrared auto focus? It could be that the camera snaps the photo b4 the light goes out. That would explain why you see it in low light photos only.
You cannot see infrared light with your naked eyes, but a cell phone camera can. Have a friend watch you through another cell phone or camcorder as they stand in front of you, while you snap a photo of them. Tell them to look for a flickering red light coming from your camera.
If that's the case, it can be fixed with a software update. The light needs to go out b4 the shutter opens.

I can't remember if the G4 has manual focus, but if it does, try using it for the same test. Maybe the infrared light won't come on and the pink will not show up.

Already considered that idea but the simple test was to cover the IR port up with my finger. It still showed up. Thanks anyway
Um, I don't think the camera uses that IR port. That is for controlling your TV.
For example, many smartphones do not have an IR port, yet they have auto focus. Try what I suggested b4 dismissing it. At least try taking a pic of yourself in front of a mirror. The pic should not catch the red IR light. If it does, there's some kind of timing issue.

I mean the IR port on the back, not the top! The one that blinks. I've tried covering all the sensors and there's still a pink tint.

Has this been resolved by a replacement? I have the same issue with the pink tint/hue in the camera and I have the T-Mobile 811. I'm wondering if others have the same issue
Reminds me of the pink tint issue with the M7s. Did you feel any heat around the lens area?
In the case of the M7 it was crappy heat issues. If this happens again on the G4, I'll be getting rid of this real quick
The phone was cool and it still showed. I don't think is the heat because when I took pictures outside there was no pink tint. It's on low light conditions that it happens. I also had an issue with random dimming erratically with the auto brightness off. I did a warranty exchange and getting it tomorrow. I am hoping it doesn't have the same issues.
Got the replacement by and still has the pink center hue in the camera. This is bs. I believe people have this issue and they don't realize it. This can't be a coincidence. I don't even know what to do now. I can't return the phone since I'm past the return period.
I had the same nagging opinion with my first LG G4. I tried comparing it to the LG in my T-Mobile store but it was hard to replicate.
In the end, I replaced it for a different issue. There is still a pinkish hue near the center in some photos, particularly in lower lighting, though maybe a little better than the first (could be placebo effect)? I'm satisfied in it being just a quirk of this phone under some conditions.
Take a look at the "Post your LG photos" thread. Post some of your photos here or on that thread.
Not happy with the replacement. I still have the pink center. You definitely notice it on a white background . The crappy part is when to take video or pictures, the pink shows up. I used manual controls to change white balance to make the pink go away but it becomes way too white and unnatural. I'm going to open up a thread in the T-mobile section. I'm also going to contact LG and see what nonsense they are going to spew.
That's not pink, it's magenta, tmobiles signature colour.
If i remember correctly, lots of Xperia z3 users had the exact same issue, maybe they found a solution that can be transferred over to the g4?
There is a thread about green spots appearing in pictures for some people.
It seems that the green spots do not appear in the actual RAW (DNG) files themselves. Meaning that the green was not captured by the image sensor, and was instead added during the image processing that created the JPG.
Note that you will likely need to pull the DNG over to a computer and view it in appropriate software that can display DNG files (UFRaw is free). You will still see it on the screen/gallery on the phone, as those are showing the JPG.
Please try taking a picture in Manual, with JPG+DNG output, and check if the DNG shows the pink.
Edit: Other thread, about the green spots issue:
LG G4 green spot appearing in photos
It has nothing to do with the M7 purple tint thingy, this is something I saw in numerous old phones I had, mainly Sony Ericsson ones and perhaps Desire HD. Any white background(like walls) indoors will give the pink spot on older phones, I wonder how it's showing on G4
i tested and verified this pink spot in same conditions 10 minutes ago. lots of z3s also have the same problem afaik. i m starting to guess this problem originates from the lovely sony lenses. does anyone know which lens lg camera uses?

Question Heavy lense flare in night shots

Does everyone have these extreme lense flares / reflections on night shots? Don't think I've ever seen it this bad... Hopefully they'll be able to improve this through software updates
Lens flare is a big problem on the P6P even during the day when the sun rays hit at an angle #Won'tFix Unfortunately it's a lens problem and can't be fixed with software
If not fixed I hope it can be reduced... Is extreme in some cases
I haven't noticed a single flare at all with night shots the street lights or even in doors in direct lighting, sometimes at a certain angle in previous phones I have had it but nothing on my p6p
Yeah, it's bad.
Not as much as that but I do get that.

Yeah. I went to a festival here in Korea called the lantern festival, so it's held mostly at night and I had a buncha shots I had to throw away because of the flare, and a lot were hazy, I thought maybe it was my camera lens being dirty but the next shot was fine after the processing.
Haze and lens flare
Haze
45 degree turn from the previous photo, no issues
One of the better shots but too much HDR
I'm having massive lens flare on my pro like you op. other photos in this thread are acceptable imo. I can't tell if there's an issue or not. it's horrible, no matter what street light or x-mas light its pointed at. and night mode shots, forget it. too bad there's no way tom compare shots unless they are side by side.
running the latest 8.4.300.xxx18 version for the camera app. it drastically fixed front camera preview. so not sure if this issue will be fixed or if my cam is effed (no lens protector and tried it with no case also)
Come on guys when you say you aren't getting any flare. It depends how close you are to street lights. It doesn't happen at a distance from strong street lights. I get it on P6P and am sure you will if you try it. It is not faulty as I had same issue on S21 Ultra main lens but not as severe. Here's a shot I took

Need to be much closer
Here more examples closer to light and further away
My opinion is, that P6P has problem with the flares, but main problem I see is that Nightsight tries to lighten up the scene, and thinks that the flares are shadows that should be lightened up. But I admit, I pointed my pixel to light source and id did show some flaring, but not as much as your photos.

Nah man, maybe to some degree, but this is ridiculous. I still have my previous phone, Oppo Find X2 Pro, and it's not even nearly as bad there. I'll post some side-by-side comparison shots soon
P6 (Pro) has heavy lens flare, it's a known problem. Hopefully Google can somehow tune it down with software updates.
What also helps is making sure that the lens is pristine, meaning you need to make sure its properly cleaned before you make photos. Even a little bit of smudge or dust or something can cause lens flare. Hopefully that means it's a software thing-y.
It's got absolutely nothing to do with dirty lens, that purple lens flare is light bouncing off the lens or sensor inside.

Are you talking from experience? Having the camera bump cleaned does help with lens flare, just try it out yourself. There was a reddit discussion about this and people were adamant about it, I tried it out and it somewhat helps.
Also, your "logic" is not quite thorough.
If there is dirt/smudge/whatever above the lens/camera, of course that could cause lens flare, since that will reflect/redirect light. With a rough surface, reflected light rays scatter in all directions.
For reference
I get lens flare when using Canon L lenses (and one of them retails just under £2000) it is the nature of the beast shooting into bright sources of light though a lens.

Correct, some degree of lens flare is almost unavoidable. The P6 has, however, relatively heavy/often lens flare present - that was not present (as heavily) in previous Pixel phone iterations/sensors. Hopefully Google can somehow tune this down. It's distracting and most often or not ruins an otherwise great shot.
