It seems the reds lens is better than green, because the greens is later date of manufacture
Mine doesn't look red or green, just clear LOL
i don't know. mine seems to be red! But I still wonder what is the difference?
Don't know either but it's a big thing as only red camera's work in the new orange GB rom, luckily I have red.

Quark's CM7 has that!
the red lenses are better, the greens have bigger image compression. you can check which lens you have by checking the size of a picture you take. if its over 1mb, you have red lens.

isn't compression purely software related?
Yes deanimo, but I think the default settings are different for both, with the red using less compression by default, but changeable in the settings
if changeable, please tell me how to do it! cus i havent found any solution...

When in the camera, press the settings fake hard key, Picture resolution:-
choices available on red lens Widescreen
Large 5MP
Medium 3MP
Small 2MP
Very Small 1MP - these are the default options.
If we can find the file that these options are loaded from we can alter compression too
And why would you want more compression? The picture quality will get worse!
I said alter not increase
we dont want more compression, we want less...

i checked build.prop, and i didnt find anything about compression... btw, how can i change build.prop? do i have to remount the partition r/w, or is there an other way? and one more thing: the file sais i use build 3.4.2-177, while i use 3.4.3-11... wth?

Hi
I've bought yesterday my Desire and I've noticed that in the upper middle screen part there is a small yellowish backlight glow only seen on black background. Can You tell me if there should be one or I should take it back to the shop ? This is probably the new SLCD version. I don't know is this a flaw or all of the sceens have some little glow on the black.
Thanks in advance
yellowish backlight?
is it in a dot size?
have you try different background color (red, green, blue)?

It is some kind of LCD bleeding. It looks similar to the picture attached below.
Mine is just slightly visible compared to this photo (copied from androidforums.com) but still it's the same issue. I just wanted to confirm from a SLCD Desire user if this is a typical for those diplays, or if I should take it back to the shop.
Most LCD screens bleed light to some degree, but that looks totally unacceptable to me. I'd take it back.
EDIT: Oops, should have read the full post. Well that one above is really bad, any chance of getting a picture of yours?

Yeah, I finally managed to do some photos.
The second one is with other light source (a 20W lamp). The first and third are without any lamp, high iso photos, but the first one has added brigthness in Photoshop, and third is on default. Remember these photos are on full display brightness, just to show how the screen behaves on dark, black background.

It is a slcd because it doesn't say it's amoled on the back. I just wanted to know if all slcds in Desire have this problem. I don't want to take it back just to get another device that has the same problem or even worse.
Well that's definitely SLCD... OLED (like my phone) will be pitch black when it's on a black screen, as there is no backlight on them.
Yes that is definitely a flaw. I would definitely take it back. It's unlikely you'd get another one that bad.
I've found a film on YouTube:
So it's just probably the thing with all SLCD's. Still I love the phone and since I know that I won't get a AMOLED version I'll probably keep this and just have fun with it. Thank You all for Your replies
Hi everyone, just a few minutes ago i was looking for a completely black wallpaper and it came to my mind to just put my finger over the camera and take a pic, as soon as i put my finger over the lens i saw a few red and blue spots on the screen...i then put it over a black cloth and i could still see the red and blue dots(look like dead pixels but on the sensor?) its best visible when camera is set to 8mp. I am just wondering if this is normal or if i have a faulty camera..the dots dissapear as soon as there is some light i will post a pic in a sec. Please can anyone test it out by turning on the cam set to 8mp and put your finger over the lens so its completely dark wait a bit ( 30-40sec) and look at the screen.
Edit: Also when you put the exposure to max you can see it even better.
Did a little research and it is called a hot pixels.
Hi,
At 1st excuse my english please!
You dont need to be afraid of this, this is totaly normal an youre camera is ok!
The sensor generate colors from RGB (red, green and blue) and what you see there is no more then the try of the sensor to put colors in the dark!
Greetings
Alef
Yes but they are on the same spot every time and they are flickering, the only way you can notice it is in a dark room and when you put somthing over the lens so its completely dark then i get flickering hot pixels on the same spots. Please can anyone else try this and let me know if you see it on the display/viewfinder.
A lot of sensors can suffer from that, that's why normal cameras offer pixel mapping to disable hot pixels. Unless you see those spots show up in final images I would say don't worry about.
It does show on the final picture. That is why im asking people to check if they have same thing.. if every one has it i wouldnt worry about it but if not i will go exchange it while i can. Its bright flickering white, red and blue dots. Looks exactly like a stuck pixel and not the rgb noise ones that are visible on the whole screen.

Hi,
I found an explanation for this:
The CCD-Sensor interprets residual voltage (<----Hope the right word! ) as brightness information what results in those colored spots!
As I said, its totaly normal!
Greetings
Alef
If you take a picture in a dark room, the camera will boost the gain in order to try to take a decent picture. It will boost the gain until it sees enough content in the image. The darker the room, the more the gain will be boosted.
By covering the lens youve removed all of the light. The camera is therefore boosting the gain as much as it can until it's picking up what is effectively noise in a few of the pixels (some will always be more noisy than others). This wont have any noticable effect on a picture taken at normal light levels.
Thank you everyone for the explanation

I actually noticed this, too. I thought I had a dead/hot pixel on the screen, but it only appears when it's on viewfinder mode. It doesn't really appear in the image taken itself (or maybe I just don't notice) so I never really minded it after the initial discovery. Glad to know this is just normal
I'm noticing this too.
except differently, i'm not seeing individual spots, i'm seeing hair-like artifacts.
Pictures:
any suggestions?
Hmm that looks really bad.. did you solve it?
You will have to send the phone where you bought, I think it's a manufacturer's faulty
is there a command that will tell me which lens i have? i'm color blind and cant tell or is there a app or some other way of telling thanks.
just take a picture (5MP), and if its less than 1MB you have green lens, if its around 1.5-2MB, you have red lens (of course this only works if you havent applied any camera patches!)

not quite sure, but green is better, but motorola couldnt figure out a way to make it work properly with this cpu, so defy-wise the red is better

Just picked up this thread - my images are around 500KB each, so I'd be on a green lens (in fact looking at the lens does prove this, just in case I preferred to do a simpler test). I've not had any issues with my camera though - what problems are there with the green lens?
There is no problem with the green lenses. The only issue is that for the moment (or maybe forever) you cannot apply a patch to record HD video (720p) which works only on red lenses. However 720p is not officially supported by this device so ...
Most of my pics are around 1.5mb but I have a few close to 1mb and none 2mb or higher. I think I must have the red lens

[email protected] video is supported by the green lens (ov5642), just look at the datasheet (or the iphone 4, which has the same sensor)! i dont know about the red sensor, havent figured out the exact type. btw, if you have green lens, you can improve camera quality (decrease compression, hence clearer images), and get about 1.5MB pictures too! Just read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966800
My lens is clear plastic, and the visible bit underneath the circle is black.
there is nothing coloured either red, green, yellow, or anything else.
I'm familiar with that thread but I'm not interested in patching the camera as I didn't buy Defy for his camera. For best results you should/could use a camera; even the cheapest will have better results than Defy. Now related to HD video mode maybe I should have mentioned that it is not supported officially by Motorola.
But most of the time we don't just carrying around digital camera. So with the Defy's 5mp camera is a good thing to have if there's sudden need to take beautiful naked lady on the run... So having it tuned (decreased compression to improve picture quality or some patching) should taking into consideration.
Throw in faster shutter and iso control and you can get a perfect naked lady on the run pic without motion blur

Yea, it would be awesome to have it. But I wouldn't ask more as my Defy already working the way I wanted it to..
* And I wouldn't be surprised if Motorola decided to push the next Defy2 or DefyHD with some kick-ass features.
Can someone explain... why are there two types of lens on the same defy..?? Is it a region specific thing..??

There is another thread which gathers statistics about green/red lenses:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103993
In general it looks as if the newer ones (bought since march ?) are mostly equipped with red lenses. But i would think that it depends on the distribution channel (country / provider ...).
does the red lens have the capability to record in 720p in RC0? If so, what is needed to do this?
I have HD setting on video mode but the record button does not work, any ideas?

CM7 here... On HD mode the screen goes black, and when i try to record, it crashs...
I think that i have a red lens...
I have done the update to 2.2 from Motorola. And now i must have the 720p option, but i don´t can change to that. The best record that i can do is in VGA. And i have red lens.
Probably its an improvement move from motorola to change from green lenses to red lenses, otherwise it would be the same.
As we know, red lenses supported 720p recording via flashing update patch and red lenses currently supported leak gingerbread 2.3.3. Red lenses also having higher picture captured size. Older Defy uses green lenses obviously having compatibility issues that pushes motorola to made the changes.
But I know our XDA Masters usually can sort out issues, so not worries...

Aside from waiting on an update, would flashing a rom or kernal help at all with the HTC one camera issues?? I really want to avoid getting my phone replaced for a warranty replacement. I am passed the 14 days, i just rooted my phone and got S-Off. Someone please help!!
I am running cm10.2 and I get the purple haze. 10/11 seemed better that 10/9 build... Might just be wishful thinking tho.
It isn't a software issue.

If you are having issues with the camera then you really need to have it replaced under warranty. The issues we are having is from a bad image sensor, not software. The bad sensor will have more issues with purple tinting in the edges, generally turn out darker and more grainy even at the same exposure and ISO. I have a few sample pics on Google Plus. Also below is my HTC One with a bad image sensor issue (left) next to a CLNR from Verizon (right) that does not have this issue. They are running the same software and have the same default settings applied before I recorded this. You can see the camera software on the bad one cycling through various levels trying to optimize the image.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUrHQ92x65c
So bottom line - Don't wait on an OTA to fix this. If you have an HTC One with a bad sensor then get it back to stock and replace it under warranty.
Mine seems to be ok. Mine actually when put camera down will stay black for a bit, then the purple will creep in. But it definitely doesn't change around a lot like the video shows. Sounds like I got a good one. Mines also the blue one from best buy so, idk if that makes a difference.

The good sensors still have a bit of issue with tinting in very dim photos, right at the cut off where the automatic flash would otherwise kick in. That can be fixed with software. What I had on the first one was no consistent across the entire image. For lack of a better term it just wasn't as sensitive as the replacement or my T-Mobile HTC One's sensor.

Uh, sorry to break it to you but both are equally defective. If it shows anything other than pitch black (maybe with a tiny bit of noise) when you set it down, your sensor's bad. Both of yours are going bright pink in total darkness and have severe tinting in low light shots.

If I lock the bad one to ISO 200 still pure pink. The replacement is black center with pick edges. Did you check the pics on my G+ album? There is definitely a difference. Could be this new one is bad too, I don't have my T-Mobile HTC One any longer to compare side by side. I'll mess around with them both and grab some screen shots so you can see what I am talking about with the ISO setting.

It's definitely better but it's not good. A working sensor should not be showing discolored edges on any ISO setting, especially the lower ones like 200.
You can see a pretty severe tint in these three pictures:

Agreed, better but not good. Poor choice of words on my part. In any event, there is a wide variety of image quality even with the same software which was my point to begin with.
Received replacement #2 yesterday. Still notice a maroon (this time) noise at ISO800 and can definitely see it at ISO1600. ISO 400 is dark starting out and just barely gets a tint in the corners when the camera is left sitting on. No issues at ISO 200 and lower. Left to right in the attachment is original, replacement #1 and replacement #2. Screenshots are from #2. Guessing this is as good as it's going to get.

Might be just me. Im really neurotic when it comes to my tech
I've also got this problem, it might not be that easy to see on the picture I've attached, but you can at least see that the colors are not the same. I've also tested the screen with an app called Screen test, and it seems to completely fail the Checker board test under Resolution and Horizontal resolution (1 pixel) makes the display flicker.

Yeah, but I'm not sure if it's due to the HTC Color Enhancement, or if the screen is bad. The stores says it's just a different color temperature on the screen.
The the light in the proximity sensors are IR captured by the camera, so I can't see it (except through another camera ofc)
