I only ask because of the I/O conference boasting of it, and the fact that the iPad 2 just got an app for it. If they had it running on a Xoom, can't we do it with the EVO? Here's the article prompting my question.

So no dice then? I know this has to be interesting enough to entice some Dev out there. Teamwin? Cm? God?

Probably not
I wouldn't think so just because the 3d screen is higher resolution than the evolution...
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
FYI it's not actually 3D in the same way that the evo 3D's or the 3DS's screen is. It's a 2D screen, it just uses the front camera to track your face and renders the image on the display accordingly. Basically a glorified wiimote, it is not a stereoscopic display.
That said, it could definitely be done on the evo, the only issues I could see would be ones of having enough horsepower to do that sort of image processing and analysis and then rendering graphics at a decent framerate.
Right, but the only difference is that the processor on the EVO 4G is single core as opposed to dual. Both are 1GHZ. The only application that I would really want it for are movies anyways. What else would you guys use it for?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I played with a 3DS at Best Buy and was very unimpressed with the 3D. It looked 3D INSIDE the screen but nothing appeared to project out in 3D. If that's how it's supposed to be I'm unimpressed. Maybe the "3D" wasn't turned on, but it did have a 3D effect like those cards you rotate to make a moving 3D-like image.
The 3DS is not actually 3D. It uses the camera to produce augmented reality(AR), basically objects pasted over the live camera image. There are AR apps available for most phones now.
It would be possible to produce the same effect as the idevice app on the EVO, but it will not be like the EVO 3D. Give devs some time!
I wasn't expecting it to be like the evo 3D. I, like most of you just would like to see where the capabilities end with the EVO.

That's not actually true, the 3DS is an actual autostereoscopic display, see here for information on how that works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autostereoscopy
For it to work though, you need a special type of screen with a parallax barrier in it.
The app demonstrated in the OP's article would do literally nothing for movies.
Why wouldn't it do anything for movies?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Because it's no different from watching a movie on your computer screen. It's not a 3D display.
The "3D" is created by a 3D engine, like the one that video games use. It's 3D, but it's not stereoscopic 3D. Let's say that you were playing Call of Duty, or any other FPS shooter. It's playing in a 3D engine, but it's not actually stereoscopic 3D when you play it on your normal computer monitor or your normal TV.
In order to have stereoscopic 3D, you need to either have special glasses or a special screen. The ipad and 90% of most portable devices don't have screens that are stereoscopic-capable.
lol, most posters in this thread know jack **** about 3D.
What jesus dude said.
You could create apps that "produce" 3D graphics, but it takes a lot of computing horsepower to make something appear 3D on a 2D screen. I took a class on 3D graphics on computers back in the day. Trust me, it's not worth the dev time for a phone that's going to begin it's golden years in the very near future.
Hey that was the whole reason for this thread: to ask the question.

I'm on T-Mobile USA and these two devices are both coming out next month. I've had (and loved) Android since the HTC Magic came out last year. I love the MyTouch for it's FFC and the newest gen procs. However, I'm pretty drawn to the HD7 for it's new OS and large SLCD, however disappointed in lack of FFC (regardless of how little I would realistically use it), and it's first gen procs. It's got the same "guts" as my N1, but it's runs so well from the demos I've seen this week.
Anyone else out there with the same dilemma? Which is better?

I am in the same boat as you. I have a nexus one and have loved it, but I am really liking WP7 so far. I believe that with such high minimum specs, the OS will see some nice apps and games in the near future.
I am about 90% sure that I am going to switch, I just have to decide between the HD7 and the Dell pro slide phone.
according to a couple sources the hd7 uses the msm8250 which has the adreno 205 gpu on it. same one as the g2.

Ya the XBL game demos were nice. This and the Zune integration is what draws me to the platform. Since I have an N1 now I haven't been too concerned about updates, however MS will be starting on top of all that is great.
As far as the Dell; I love everything about it especially the gorilla glass, it's just that KB doesn't look like it's worth the added weight and thickness to the phone. However I saw a sign of a FFC on the Dell unbranded VP so that could be interesting.

There are alot of information flying about.
Someone contacted HTC asking what processor, and was told the MSM processor, though, Microsofts webpage states QSD8250.
Someone else contacted HTC about the screen, and was told it had a standard TFT screen (Slashgear also states this).
At the end of the day, whether or not the myTouch will have a superior CPU doesn't matter by the fact that it runs android, games are written to be compatible with low end android sets, meaning if the myTouch had a tegra, games would still look crap.
The Galaxy S is a good example. It's GPU pushes about 80million triangles per sec, compare this with iPhone4's 28million.... now show me ANY game on Android that looks better than that on iOS? And the thing is I highly doubt there are much, if any, games on iOS that use half of its power. (Epic citadel and an upcoming iOS game called Aralon shows off what the 3GS/iPhone4/iPad can do. Not sure how much triangles/poylgons its pushing tho).
The Adreno200 pushes about 22million, which isn't a big difference compared with the iPhone, so games would be comparable.
There is a rumour that Android 3.0 will bring in minimum hardware requirements to reduce fragmentation, we'll see.

Very true, while I like to think of myself as an HTC/Android fanboy, however I always have to lend Android its faults. Gaming and media are huge and Android more or less fails in these areas. Games are horrid, though Angry Birds is always fun. Games just don't look finished or just look like the crappy 2005 Java versions on like a Moto RAZR. In fact, looking at my apps on my N1, almost all of them are apps just to make my phone run smoother or look better ie setCPU, LCD density changer, ASTRO, Ti Backup etc. That's not to say I don't like games, it's just that there's not too great of a collection when you compare to iOS or the upcoming games for WP7.
And if the HD7 has the G2's proc and an SLCD screen like the Desire HD, it will be even more amazing in my eyes. All I'd want is HSPA+, however, that part is MS's fault.

The only concerns I have with the dell is the keyboard quality and thickness. I would have to hold the unit and play around with it first. I really hope that the Hd7 has the updated processor, but I really doubt it will.
All will be revealed soon though.
Same issue with me, I have loved Android for a while now, however WP7 looks so attractive, HSPA+ is not an issue because:
1. My area doesn't have HSPA+
2. T-Mobile states that all devices running standard 3g will also notice a significant improvement to their speeds as well, which is great as well
Really I made up my mind on the HD7, I saw the apps on the zune market and a lot of em weren't that great, however I know I have to wait... I see though that the WP7 marketplace has increased in apps, so I think I might just get the HD7, or try both devices.
I would go with the HD7. Try something new and the games are WP7 are fantastic.
It definitely has its shortcomings, but the most important ones are coming.
I've been seeing alot of the newer android phones getting an app to replace the other camera app that allows 1080p HD video recording. Theoretically this should be an easy accomplishment for some one to make this .apk. however its yet to be investigated. So if anyone has any idea if this is possible or even if there is already a way to get 1080p recording please let me know! =D
Thanks,
Aaron
if this could be done i would give 20 bucks but i think its a hardware limitation that software is unable to overcome.
Those phones have different processors, camera sensors and other variations. I seriously doubt this will be coming to the Epic any time soon.
Doubtfull.
I may be wrong but I think we are limited to the 720p because of our single core precessor. If you look all 1080p phones they are dual core phones. So hardware is the limiting factor.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
According to the wiki, the camera on the Epic can only record up to 720p. Achieving 1080p could only be accomplished by scaling our videos on a computer after they are recorded.

Yes sir.....our phones need more horsepower, but how much more? There are some overclocked single core chips that can match or exceed duel core chips. Would an overclocked Epic @ 1.3 or 1.4ghz be able to accomplish this? Our Hummingbird chipsets have outstanding graphics processing capabilities. However, Samsung has been really lacking on their software part to push these phones to their full potential
Seems to me this is more a memory bus bandwidth issue than it is processor muscle. In theory a modest processor could deal with a very hi resolution video source if the compression method is efficient enough. The issue is having a wide enough bus to move that much raw video.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I understand the want to go bigger and better. But I made a 2minute video of my daughter splashing in some puddles at 720 and it was over 50mb! Try emailing that to grandpa. I had to upload it to dropbox and send out a link only.
I've actually scaled my video res down since then. Also, being on sfr my videos record in MP4 format, which is sweet.

The display models have multitouch enabled, the retail models don't...
so has anyone tried to figure out how to enable this?
if somebody can find out the manufacturer and model of the touchpad you might be able to google it and find out if it's capable.
If you google it, you'll find that the hardware in the stores is different than what consumers get. The general consensus is it's different hardware.
Different hardware for display units and review units is kind of shady.....Im crossing my fingers that webtop gets some improvements with the gingerbread OTA

Recently I got my EVO 3d as an upgrade from my old milestone. One of the phones I looked at was the xpeeria play and that was £10 a month on buymobilephones.net. but I didn't go for that because i thought the EVO 3s is better.
I also found out about the icontrolpad which seems to have similar buttons to the xperia play. Would it be possible to set up the icontrolpad so that on xperia play optimized games like modern combat 2 I can use the analogue sticks for movement and camera like the xperia play.
I had an app which set up Bluetooth controllers as buttons on the keyboard but i don't think that will work.
Anyone have a clue?
Maybe sixaxis will work with the icontrolpad? I don't want to buy it yet because I have to say it is hideously expensive

I have one of these, and, thus far, it does not emulate the xperia. Bluez IME is hoping to add this support in the future, but there is no ETA for it.
However, I can say that, for the games that do support it (and pretty much all of the emulators do), it is a seriously excellent accessory.
I got mine from ThinkGeek, as it was cheaper than paying for it and having it shipped from the UK.
So, after playing around with it further over the holidays, it does, in fact, support (most) xperia games.
I'm having trouble getting the nubs working 100% though, so YMMV.

Well I have a video review,
...a "How is it after 2 months?" session to see if it's quality stays consistent,
...as well as a COMPLETE written review.
http://verytechnical.wordpress.com/2011/11/19/sony-ericsson-xperia-play-4g-review/
That in-depth enough for ya?
EDIT: Long story short, you can find a handheld gaming system that handles tactile, portable gaming nicely, but they always fall short for... pretty much all of those non-game functions users over 14 need. You can find a lot of smartphones that handle all those necessities, but the touch controls are horrid, and every other physical controller option violates the "fearsome foursome" of external controller flaws; including that none of them aside from the Xperia PLAY have a lot of compatible games - SixAxis, ZeeMote, iControlPad, Gametel, BGP100...
...all of them fall flat on their ass when you start looking for something more than old emulated stuff. Xperia PLAY kicks ass as an emulator, but it's the only truly versatile smartphone with physical controls with the matching support of over 200 non-emulated games. There's no other device on the market that can hold the claim that well.
This is all from someone who came from 4th Gen idevices BTW. In comparison, its beat iOS at everything from media to games
Okay hardware wise they're almost the same.
1ghz CPU
512mb ram
5mp camera.
Adreno205 gpu to the sgx535
Apps will run similarly.
Okay better with iPhone :
The gorgeous hi res retina screen.
The app store
Smooth ui
Availability of apps.
Music, even though people might say otherwise.
Internal space.
Gyroscope
Better with xplay:
4 inch screen.
The ps controls
The exclusive apps
The Dlna
The PRICE
Audio feedback (xloud)
Image quality (with bravia engine )
The modding possibilities
WiFi hotspot (tethering)
A good forum
Price of apps.
Upgradeable memory (up to god knows how much with sdxc) lets say 64
Common peripherals ,ie Micro USB. So they're cheap if you misplace your charger etc.
Upcoming ics upgrade .
Upcoming PlayStation suite .
Current ps1 games .
Emulator possibilities.
Both are very good devices but unless if you were like me, a gamer, go for the iPhone .
The bads:
IPhone :
Heavily overpriced.
Not very revolutionary .
Overhyped apple product.(internals are the same as 3gs )
Relatively heavy.
Overshadowed by 4s .(last year's product)
Xplay:
Depreciation (not if you bought for like a £100)
Android ui (sorry guys spoilt by windows phone xD)
Weight 169 grams (if you're not a gamer you don't need this weight)
Lacklustre( maybe a bit overhyped too - so far but the upcoming months look really good imho)
But I still love my xplay, as I loved my omnia 7. May I recommend the ray if youre not into gaming and would like a good device .
My gf has a 4s and honestly, if you're gonna buy a new iPhone 4 save a bit more and buy the 4s instead .
Hope that helped.
Cheers

Since buying an Xperia PLAY a couple of months ago, my old iPhone 4 hasn't seen the light of day and has been hiding in my draw since.
When I hold and use my PLAY, I know I'm holding a phone that was made especially for me. It's got:
- A nicely sized screen.
- Probably the best pair of speakers I've ever seen on a phone.
- Good battery life if treated well.
- That "WOW!" factor.
- 720p recording now.
- Great emulation performance.
- Can play pretty much all PS1 games using the likes of psxperia, FPSE and psx4droid.
- A large number of exclusive games.
- Is moddable and is a dream to run after rooting device.
I won't be buying another phone from here on unless it's a Sony gaming device running on Android.
I just love it when family come over in the holidays rocking up with their iPhone 4 and 4S thinking they have the best phone on the market. While they're talking to Siri asking for the weather, I'm having good fun playing Crash Bash with psxperia with a real game pad and at full speed.

Have you tried out Launcher7 on the XPlay... Gives you that WP7 look and feel (at least for the launcher)... Ubermusic gives you a zune-style music player...
The biggest draw of any Android device over any of the other major platforms is customization. If you put the time and energy into it you can make Android do anything you want it to.

thanks for all the help guys! i would like a good phone but also be able to play games as well (maybe not extensively but i imagine i would use the pad a lot) would you say this is the phone for me or should i get another phone but stick to touchscreen controls? reviews are quite varied, some say its great and others say thats its great only for gaming? could anyone clarify briefly please?
*at the time of posting i have not watched nor read the reviews posted by "TLRtheory" so please excuse me if this was mentioned in one of them*
I recently got an iphone to try since i hear these things organize peoples lives, then got sick of it after i jailbroke it, being on android all these years i felt it was inconvenient just to make ringtones, text tones and with its limited format, then i found out im stuck with that square front page so i gave it to my brother.
then i brought a play, i played it for a few days then placed a listing online to sell it, then pulled out a few days after because i would waste more money getting something better like a Samsung s2
this phone is great it gets used alot more than any cellphone i had, while im waiting around or in public i can just burn some time and play.
At first it wasn't a great phone but then got root uninstaller to disable alot of the services i dont need.
the controls really make this phone worth it, i had sold my psp and missed all those old games, touchscreen controls never went far for me, i couldn't imagine clocking castlevania or many nes roms with it.
There is only one thing this phone can do better than any other: playing games. If you don't see yourself doing that often, you're better off with other options. Buying a Xperia Play is like crossing the Rubicon, as it makes a statement about yourself.
It depends, men are from android and women are from ios.
Well I will be playing games often but I just want to know if it is a good overall PHONE regardless of gaming. I currently have the ZTE blade so maybe that will tell you something..
Sent from my Blade using XDA App
As an overall phone, it's just as good as a Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire S or any mid high end Android device: very fluid movement of the UI, so-so camera... It will be a fairly substantial improvement from the Blade, though that's a fantastic device btw. As a phone, it's bulky, but it has a remarkably good external speaker for music, packs a decent battery and the screen has a nice resolution (higher dpi than the blade).
I came from the Blade and find the Play super. Only cost me €7 more then the Blade too. Its a great phone if you can get it cheap.
