Hello folks,
First of all I must say that Xda is best place for android user..
Ok..Here is the problem
I tried to S-Off my desire,so I downloaded AlphaRev 1.8 HBOOT reflash utility
(MD5SUM: 3ca4c4803fe1eb309c980420788ad3fe )
I verified the Md5 sum too..After that I burned it on a Cd..
I then rebooted my pc and
When it asked 'Do you want to flash alpharev Recovery?' My answer was NO
everything went fine till step 3..Where it says If you unplug, you will Brick..In this step I got some error..I have uploaded pic of that error

Can any one tell what went wrong??
I believe I got that when i tried to s-off,
I tried a diff usb port on the 3rd time it completed,
I found out as well that it doesnt play too nice with non AOSP roms - its still possible to do but u might get errors.
Best advice I can give is backup your current rom and install a AOSP rom and try again then when it completes apply backup and u should be good to go
edit:- I also chose No to alpharev recovery on 2nd/3rd attempt
I think you must have a froyo official rom
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
I also chose no to installing recovery whilst running s-off. I could only get it to work by flashing an aosp rooted rom (I used oxygen), prior to that it consistently failed to recognise my device.
You can always flash back to leedroid or other sense rom after gaining s-off.
1.) Make a complete nandroid-backup
2.) Flash an aosp-froyo-rom like defrost:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690477
3.) Do the s-off-procedure with live-cd
4.) Restore nandroid-backup
5.) Have fun with s-off and previous rom
I followed these steps and it worked fine without any problems. No warranty for any damage! If problems still exits, use the irc-channel of alpharev.
Thanks for advice..will flash a Aosp and let you know..
Btw flashing the Aosp rom is same as flashing any other rom or does it requires some special techinque??
Normal i just put rom.zip in sd card, go to recovry do a full wipe and then install zip from sd card..
I have never tried Aosp so was just a lil curious..

For me S-off got stuck while flashing splash screen, hboot was successful. Then it ended up by booting into bootloader. Flashing a ROM fixed it. Now am using Reflex S 2.0.41.
you need a rom without data2ext or a2sd+ or any of this solutions
so try with stock rooted rom, or some AOSP without these scripts
just install this rom and repeat the procedure and you r good to go

Depends which ASOP ROM.
I had trouble to S-OFF when I was on Gingervillan, but after flashing my phone with an old Redux ROM, I was able to S-OFF it.
I think the stock rooted ROMs are the best bet for safe S-OFF though.

Me too, it works with stock froyo - btw if u use the latest ruu you have hboot 0.93.
You can use unrevoked to root your desire and s-off is working.

I have been planning to s-off my desire for weeks now, i have some questions just in case i dont brick my phone.
1. i am using coolsense hd v10 rom, is it ok to s-off? or do i need the stock rom
2. if i nid the stock rom, can i just flash the ruu and root again, then s-off
3. can i s-off using alpharev via vmware
4. how to prevent alpharev from changing my splash screen

Are you serious?
what u mean
It doesn't matter, which rom you are using. I used the CD-method to S-Off my Desire, but I think it should also work using vmware.
You can't prevent alpharev from changing your splash screen, but there are tools in this forum, which allow you to change it to whatever you want afterwards.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
You can change the splash screen with Android Flasher - It can be found in the Developement sub-forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638
If you need a stock ROM, then you can either flash the RUU (You lose Root, S-Off) or flash a pre-rooted stock ROM (can be found in the Developement sub-forum).
S-Off via VMWare can be done, but if you are stuck use the USB or CD method instead (people reported issues with VMWare).
dont try to do S-OFF unless you are running stock rooted ROM
best is to run a RUU, then root, then go s-off
if you try to S-OFF while on a2sd+ or data2xxx rom, procedure will fail, and it might brick your phone (it fails after going past STEP3 - DONT UNPLUG YOUR P_HONE OR U WILL BRICK IT) but i unplugged it, and was ok, then RUU and again whole thing worked
I had problems with s-off on my stock sense rom (rooted).
I made a goldcard, rooted, then alpharev would not recognise my device.
Soon as I switched to rooted aosp rom (oxygen) it was fine!

Just flash stock rooted froyo, done the trick for me.
OP, just search for how to s-off, there are answers to all you questions available. I know that, as i only recently s-offed myself.
So, can i do this?
1. do nandroid backup
2. use froyo asia wwe ruu(im from singapore)
3. root with unrevoked
4. s-off with vmware
5. restore
But err, one question, if i was damn unlucky and brick my device, can i just use the RUU and restore it back?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069600
Just follow the guide on the thread. If you brick your device, there is no way back. That's why its called brick. There are semi bricks, which can be fixed.

hi my HTC Desire says PVT1 S-OFF already
this make any difference between AlphaRev S-off?? or i need to go through this method also??
Just install a rom without A2SD (like Leedroid 2.4.1 no-A2SD or Teppic's rom) and then you can S-OFF your desire. I advice you to write the .img on a cd and then boot on this, you won't encounter any issue.
Afterwards you can apply a new splash on your Desire, like the stock one (which is available on alpharev website).

this is my 1st post, and sorry if wrong section...
i have desire rooted.
bootloader : 0.83 S-ON (INCORRECT)
CORRECTION: bootloader : 0.80 S-ON
i've tried to flash a ginger-based custom rom.
and it was stuck on the HTC splash screen (no boot i guess)
tried every thing, from wipe, repartion, wipe all, reset data ....
so my question, is there a minimum version of bootloader required to install and run a ginger-based rom? as i had never applied an OTA update, once i rooted the device, i flash custom roms all the time, and never updated the hboot.
thanks in advanced.

Well, Before I was s-off, I have successfully flashed many times the Insertcoin sense rom by baadnewz and many other similiar roms. I used 1GB ext 3 partition+96MB swap partition and the rest was fat32.
You should try this configuration.
In addition, what version of Amon ra's recovery are you using, for me both 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 have worked perfectly.
Good luck

hi guys, I recently failed to flash Auraxtremeginger 8.6 and I finally figured out why. It seems that Gingerbread prefers HBoot 0.93 so I...
1) flashed my phone with the latest official RUU(2.29 with HBoot 0.93 and I needed a gold card flashing from Auraxtsense 8.4 with Hboot 0.80)
2) and then reroot it with unrevoked
3) and then reset to factory settings, wiped Dalvik
4) and then install from zip in the clockwork recovery... and success...
*Note: No S-Off done in the process.

No problem. I had the same issue.
Hi there,
A year ago or so i got a desire, rooted it with unrevoked (amazing app, thanks to the developers), flashed clockworkmod 2.0.5.X (can't remember) and leedroid's 2.5.0 (after playing around with some others). However, a few months ago it started freezing without reason. Supposedly, a reformat of the sd card would fix that. Therefore, I backed up, installed latest Clockworkmod (5.0.2, with rom manager RM) and used RM to format the sd resulting in an error. When I booted in recovery I realized I already have S-ON and clockworkmod 2.0.5 (altough RM keep saying me i have 5.0.2). After that I used unrevoked 3.32 in an attempt to fix all that mess. However, the only thing I got was to have an unrooted desire!!!
My actual config is:

I have tried using unrevoked again but nothing. Alphrev to raise the hboot version but my phone is actually unrooted. I don't know what to do, any help please!?!
Thanks in advance and apologies for the long speech
Do you have a custom ROM? then you have root. I don't think you quite grasp the concept of what "root" means.
1) You only need to run unrevoked on the stock 2.2 Froyo ROM if you would like to have that rooted.
2) ROM Manager sucks arse harder than a jet engine on full power. Do not use it, do everything manually through recovery
3) You are rooted, if your phone is giving you issues just do a full wipe and re-flash the ROM.
Full wipe:
/mounts & storage
> format boot
> format data
> format cache
> format system
> format sd-ext (if available)
If you would like to flash a different recovery, it is best to do it through Fastboot. For that, you need to be S-OFF. You have 2 options here.
1) Use the Alpharev live CD to S-OFF
2) Create a goldcard, use the latest WWE RUU to update your phone and it's bootloader, then use revolutionary
Then flash recovery.
You can find lots of help on my guide... it's not that easy to miss...
Hi bortak, thanks for the quick response!!
I'm really kinda newbie in these things. Yeah, i have a custom rom and yes, I was rooted. However, I do really think I am unrooted because titanium backup (through superuser app that comes with leedroid's rom) says at startup that I'm not rooted. Is there any other way to know for sure?
As you suggest, I thought on alpharev to s-off an then flash an updated recovery+rom. But I can't if unrooted (I don't know if that matters but my hboot is 0.80).
Is the goldcard+WWE RUU+revolutionary safe in my case?
Thanks a lot!

bortak I've read in your guide (amazing, thanks in the name of humankind ) and found that revolutionary only supports hboots 0.93.0001 and 1.02.0001 but mine is 0.80.0000.
Visionary is useful in case of not having a recovery, but I have clockworkmod 2.0.5. Is there any way to root my desire again so I can use alpharev to get s-off?
With s-off I could install an updated CWM so I can format the sd or install an stock RUU to get the phone to service center, am I right?

One thing, by 'the official Gingerbread update for Desire' you mean an WWE RUU, right?? As my phone has Clockworkmod but S-ON and is unrooted. Just flash a rooted stock Rom or restore your first nandroid.
Fyi if you run unrevoked, it messes up the super user application so you have to clear data on it to get it working again

My main concern was that the phone was (seemed to be) unrooted and unrevoked could not change that. However wiping the data through the recovery did it

Thanks you all, i'll keep you posted as I do thing
I did it!!! At this point I'm S-OFF (I never was), updated hboot, rooted (I already was but, as rootsu said, unrevoked messed something up), fresh leedriod install and the problem about the phone freezeing randomly seems to have disappeared after a full sd and sdext format. Thank you all for the help, the guides, and so and so
Hey Guys,
Longtime no see.
Last Android I ran was a nook color that I flashed with gingerbread and that was a whole other kettle of fish.
I was donated a HTC Desire GSM and couldn't help myself and rooted it with unrevoked.
Then I updated the rom to Nikez Lentes ICS rom and I am very happy with it.
Now, I installed CWM and when it flashes it says that it is V5.0.2 but when I boot into recovery it is actually V2.5.0.
After a bit of reading I see that the author of the ROM and others and now using 4EXT Recovery so I bought that and went to give it a go but the S-ON is stopping it ( I booted into recovery and indeed it is S-ON currently ).
So reading up on how to turn ON to OFF I see unrevoked and alpharev have a solution for windows and linux only. ( I have VM windows and a raspberry pi linux ( but i assume the pi would be too underpowered to do this update))
I have read the wiki and read on the FAQ on this site that if you are not running the stock HTC rom that there could be an issue, is that correct ?
After all this, I am really just trying to make a Ext-SD partition on my SD card, cause the rom is like 120mb of the 140mb internal partition and I can't install enough apps to be happy.. lol.
I have the CWR image of V5.0.2 but am not sure really how to update it ( V2.5 is green text and V5.0 is blue so im sure I have the older version )
Or im happy to use 4EXT for my rom needs, but I need to change my S-ON to OFF to be able to flash the recovery and partition it that way.
If anyone can help that would be great, the whole setup has been rather painless and i'd like to keep it that way, I need the phone to work, but I would like to install more apps on the phone. The ROM also has a script built in so that is not the problem, just making a partition on the SD card really is what I need right now.
Thanks,
Steve
would it be because im currently S-OFF that I can't flash recovery above V2.5.0 or install 4EXT Recovery ?
Are you SON or SOFF ? Write down what your bootloader says.
1. Alpharev quote
Requirements:
The only requirement right now is that the ROM you're running is rooted.
As techniques such as 'data2ext' have been popping up, these might disturb our finely-tuned flashing process.
Please revert to a rooted stock ROM if possible. Your /data partition is used for temporary storage of important files.

I dont know whether it will work with ICS though. I wouldnt try it since this is a bootloader mod. Maybe best to go stock rooted rom before running alpharev.
Revolutionary is the other option for getting soff.
I am S-ON,
I ran unrevoked to root my phone, I want to make it S-OFF now.
I am asking how I can do it with my ICS rom and I don't want any issues, but I want to be able to make a SD-EXT partition to run apps2sd.

Read my post. Best to go to a stock rooted rom before running alpharev. Thereafter flash 4ext. Partition your sdcard with 4ext. Flash rom of your choice.
Can I ask why it is better to go to a stock rooted rom ?
Installing the stock rom, and stock radio, to then run alpharev, to then root, to then install 4ext, sounds like a lot of work just to unlock the S-ON.
That is alpharev requirement. Read my first post.
Link for rooted stock romlink
Where does it say you need to run a stock rooted rom ?
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
the stock rooted rom that is U (updated) seems to be pulled and this guy has a URL at the top saying he has pulled the rom due to internal XDA fights.

My suggestion is to run 2.3 ruu from htc dev and then use revolutionary, two flies in one hit, s-off and custom recovery, and then flashing su over recovery. Though you'll get cwm recovery after first boot you'll be able to flash 4ext.

is it worth trying revolutionary without returning to stock RUU and if it doesn't work, then installing the 2.3 RUU ?
It alk depends on hboit version your phone has. If it is 0.93 or 1.02 than it should work no matter which rom you have. I'm suggesting 2.3 ruu cause you'll get 1.02 hboot and you're good to go.

My hboot is 0.93.
If 0.93 + revolutionary could work, I would prefer to do it that way because I am very green playing with android (mostly just use non-jailbroken apple gear) But I am loving the desire + ICS.
Thank you handy and nlooo for replying.
