[Q] unrevoked unrooted my desire - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
A year ago or so i got a desire, rooted it with unrevoked (amazing app, thanks to the developers), flashed clockworkmod 2.0.5.X (can't remember) and leedroid's 2.5.0 (after playing around with some others). However, a few months ago it started freezing without reason. Supposedly, a reformat of the sd card would fix that. Therefore, I backed up, installed latest Clockworkmod (5.0.2, with rom manager RM) and used RM to format the sd resulting in an error. When I booted in recovery I realized I already have S-ON and clockworkmod 2.0.5 (altough RM keep saying me i have 5.0.2). After that I used unrevoked 3.32 in an attempt to fix all that mess. However, the only thing I got was to have an unrooted desire!!!
My actual config is:
Bravo PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.80.0000
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.17.05.08
Mar 29 2010, 21:34:33
I have tried using unrevoked again but nothing. Alphrev to raise the hboot version but my phone is actually unrooted. I don't know what to do, any help please!?!
Thanks in advance and apologies for the long speech

Do you have a custom ROM? then you have root. I don't think you quite grasp the concept of what "root" means.
1) You only need to run unrevoked on the stock 2.2 Froyo ROM if you would like to have that rooted.
2) ROM Manager sucks arse harder than a jet engine on full power. Do not use it, do everything manually through recovery
3) You are rooted, if your phone is giving you issues just do a full wipe and re-flash the ROM.
Full wipe:
/mounts & storage
> format boot
> format data
> format cache
> format system
> format sd-ext (if available)
If you would like to flash a different recovery, it is best to do it through Fastboot. For that, you need to be S-OFF. You have 2 options here.
1) Use the Alpharev live CD to S-OFF
2) Create a goldcard, use the latest WWE RUU to update your phone and it's bootloader, then use revolutionary
Then flash recovery.
You can find lots of help on my guide... it's not that easy to miss...

Hi bortak, thanks for the quick response!!
I'm really kinda newbie in these things. Yeah, i have a custom rom and yes, I was rooted. However, I do really think I am unrooted because titanium backup (through superuser app that comes with leedroid's rom) says at startup that I'm not rooted. Is there any other way to know for sure?
As you suggest, I thought on alpharev to s-off an then flash an updated recovery+rom. But I can't if unrooted (I don't know if that matters but my hboot is 0.80).
Is the goldcard+WWE RUU+revolutionary safe in my case?
Thanks a lot!

bortak I've read in your guide (amazing, thanks in the name of humankind ) and found that revolutionary only supports hboots 0.93.0001 and 1.02.0001 but mine is 0.80.0000.
Visionary is useful in case of not having a recovery, but I have clockworkmod 2.0.5. Is there any way to root my desire again so I can use alpharev to get s-off?
With s-off I could install an updated CWM so I can format the sd or install an stock RUU to get the phone to service center, am I right?
Thanks!!!

Dear coriscow
You may follow the below steps:
1. Download and Instal the official Gingerbread update for Desire which is available in developer.htc.com
2. Root the device using Unrevoked method
3. Flash a custom ROM (if you wish)
I hope it will solve your issue.
Thanks-
Shuprio

Shuprio I was about to reflash leedroid 2.5 again (formating sdcard and sd-ext). But I'll do as you say, thanks.
One thing, by 'the official Gingerbread update for Desire' you mean an WWE RUU, right?? As my phone has Clockworkmod but S-ON and is unrooted. However, yesterday I could install a new radio and RIL so I think it'll let me flash a ROM. If not (and i don't get a brick ) I think I'll go with the goldcard
Thanks!!

Yes Coriscow. It is the RUU. Best of luck! Hope everything will be fine.

Just flash a rooted stock Rom or restore your first nandroid.
Fyi if you run unrevoked, it messes up the super user application so you have to clear data on it to get it working again

rootSU that's it, thanks!
My main concern was that the phone was (seemed to be) unrooted and unrevoked could not change that. However wiping the data through the recovery did it
Now I will try to fix all the other thins like flashing a RUU to update the HBOOT. If so use revolutionary
Thanks you all, i'll keep you posted as I do thing

I did it!!! At this point I'm S-OFF (I never was), updated hboot, rooted (I already was but, as rootsu said, unrevoked messed something up), fresh leedriod install and the problem about the phone freezeing randomly seems to have disappeared after a full sd and sdext format. Thank you all for the help, the guides, and so and so

AmonRA install

Hi
I have a PVT4 Desire and would like to do a back-up before i s-off (which cwm doesn't do hence installing AmonRA) so i can install a custom rom. I've already rooted it so i can't use unrevoked to flash AmonRA as it says the firmware is too new. Also i've tried using terminal emulator to flash the recovery but it says flash_image:not found.
How else can i flash AmonRA?
Here is a useful how to:

use the attached update.zip as a fake flash method, it is amonra recovery 1.7.0.5. just put it on ur sd card.
push vol down+power, go into recovery and when you see the triangle push vol up+power and then you ll select flash update.zip, it will take you to amonra recovery
How many times did you run unrevoked? Sometimes you have to run it a few times before it will work.
have you tried to push it using the android flasher utility...ill find the link for it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638&highlight=android+flasher+utility
there you go mate..dont know if it works for pvt-4 ...so simple to use i used it to get amon ra because i had the same problems with unrevoked
That will not work because he is S-ON
@MatDrOiD i've tried using that method but it says flash_image: not found.
@thanito thanks for the file but when i went in to recovery and did apply sdcard:update.zip or install zip from sd card it stayed on CWM and didn't change to AmonRA.
@bailz2506 i haven't s-off'd yet i need to make a nandroid back-up first just in case before i can and CWM won't do it for the PVT4 Desire.
Isn't there a PC36IMG.zip for AmonRa for the Desire like there is with the other devices so i can do it the bootloader way?
hi mate,
at the beginning meet same problem... phone rooted but unable to do nand backup
E:misc error file doesn't exist... blablabla
i solved this by rerooting the phone with this cmw3.21 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22152187/reflash_package3.21.exe
once done, i succesfully made a nanbck.
first i s-OFFed the devices and afterwards flash the recovery with fastboot to install Ar 2.0.1
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22152187/recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.1.img
hope this help sorting this
@fragargon nope that didn't work,it still stayed on the same CWM and didn't differ.
@aamir007: Do you have another update.zip file in your sd card?
Did you flash CWM through rom manager?
If so try to delete the file first and copy the one i attached you in sd root.

Oh,man!you can use the pb99img.zip into hboot,it will let you to update

Don't say things that have nothing to do with this.
What you could do is return to stock. Then run Unrevoked again.
@Thanito I tried it again and deleted the existing one but still no luck
@Lennyz1988 Guess i'll have to do that. Is there any RUU i should avoid using that will update my hboot and make it unrootable. I've made a goldcard so i shouldn't have any problems flashing the RUUs.
hi aamir007,
amazing that didn't work, it was working and got a pvt4 also.
assuming that you are still on cmw (don't know your version) could you try this one
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22152187/recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.8-bravo.img
just launch unrevoked select first the menu and custom recovery (browse to the one downloaded) make sure that "disable security on phone is checked)
should get sorted of this, it was for me.
about RRu depends the rom you have settings/about phone/software you could see all current version rom and radio running on your phone which matter for rru
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
hope this help
@fragargon I tried it again and this time UnRevoked said is the firmware too new like it does when i try to use it to flash AmonRA, and still on CWM 2.5.0.7.
So i'm going to flash an RUU do i need to flash the same Baseband or lower to make sure its still rootable and the hboot doesn't change.

Try to use unrevoked 3.2 (also integrate amonra recovery) for rooting:
http://megaupload.com/?d=9T9JRA3U
The ruu you flash should fit to baseband.
No warranty for any damage!
For a nandroid backup do you need S-OFF?
A friend has a PVT-4 and is using CWM and his backs up fine but he said you need to S-OFF first.

You can nandroid backup and restore without s-off.
Solved my problem, i S-Off'ed and installed the AlphaRev CWM during the process and i can preform a nandroid back-up perfectly fine

[Q] Returning to stock

I'm selling my DInc on eBay in a few days (upgrading to the Galaxy Nexus). It's currently running CM7 - I plan to give the buyer the option of a stock phone or a rooted phone with CM7 (as an aside, is this a good idea, or should I just sell it stock?). So I need to make sure I know how to return it to stock if necessary.
I found a very detailed and seemingly clear procedure over on another forum (I hope I'm allowed to link to it here, if not I apologize), but I just want to make sure of a couple of things.
1. The 2.3.4 PB31IMG.zip I downloaded (from here) contains a radio as well as the ROM. It's the same radio I'm already running (2.15.10.07.07) - am I ok to flash this over what I currently have, since it's the same baseband?
2. Will this also return recovery to stock (I have CWM recovery), or is that something I have to do in a separate step? If I have to do it separately, in what order do I do it - before I return it to S-ON using Unrevoked or after? Before flashing PB31IMG.zip or after?
3. Finally, in addition to CM7, my phone has the EXT4 4 All mod installed (/data and /cache are formatted ext4 instead of ext3), do I need to be concerned about this?
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Yes it is ok to flash the ruu even though it contains the same radio.
Flashinh an ruu will install the stock recovery. You will wany to flash the s-on tool on the unrevoked forever site before doing an ruu.
First you have to flash thru hboot the froyo 2.15.00.07.28 radio.
Then flash the s-on tool thru recovery.
Then do the ruu.
Thats it the phone is complete stock again, remember to format the emmc and sdcard before selling.
The ext 4 mod is not an issue if returning to stock, as it will be overwriten by the ruu. If the buyer wants it rooted i would still go in to recovery wipe everything in mounts and storrage and then flash a fresh rom.

Thanks for your response - it's very helpful. I have one question though -- why do I have to flash the Froyo 2.15.00.07.28 radio if I'm doing a Gingerbread 2.3.4 RUU that already has a later radio (2.15.10.07.07) included?
Don't worry, I'll definitely wipe everything and flash a fresh copy of CM7 if the buyer wants it rooted!

You have to go to the 07.28 radio to go s-on. Both unrevoked and the s-on tool require that radio to function properly. But then when you flash the ruu it will go back to 07.07

No problem. Also even if they want it stock you could just leave it s-off and flash the ruu. This would make it stock rom / recovery but much much simpler for them to root if they would so choose in the future.
U probably would get more money leaving it rooted with cm7

Desire Bravo. I have s-off want to root (or flash runnyRom)

Hello guys, I bought an HTC Desire Bravo from ebay. It is already S-OFF but the rom is not rooted. I want to either root the current rom or even better install runnyRom. I tried unrevoked and I get a "CID is missing" error. From what I read it has to do with my phone being already s-off.
Right now it has Android 2.2 running. So what can I do to install runny rom? Thanks in advance.

U r already s-off... Hope u r sure about that... Coz that means u r already rooted...
To flash runny Rom u vll need a touch recovery.... I would recommend 4ext recovery.... Link in my signature...
Also partition ur sd card... 1gb should be enough... Do it by 4ext recovery...

s-off and rooted are actually slightly different. you can be s-off but not rooted as stated in the OP
s-off fully disables nand security, rooted means you have root privileges
@panagath
do you have a custom recovery installed? (power off your phone, then power and vol-down, wait a little then select recovery).
if not install a recovery, i would recommend 4ext as above. flash the recovery.img through fastboot (google how to install drivers)
to root your current rom (if you want to install something like titanium backup and transfer apps across to new rom), flash the superuser zip in recovery from revolutionary page.
to flash a different rom, boot into recovery, wipe everything and flash the rom.zip. check if you require a different hboot and/or an ext partition on your sd card (backup everything to PC first... partition with 4ext or gparted).

S-Off / Partition Ext SD Etc

Hey Guys,
Longtime no see.
Last Android I ran was a nook color that I flashed with gingerbread and that was a whole other kettle of fish.
I was donated a HTC Desire GSM and couldn't help myself and rooted it with unrevoked.
Then I updated the rom to Nikez Lentes ICS rom and I am very happy with it.
Now, I installed CWM and when it flashes it says that it is V5.0.2 but when I boot into recovery it is actually V2.5.0.
After a bit of reading I see that the author of the ROM and others and now using 4EXT Recovery so I bought that and went to give it a go but the S-ON is stopping it ( I booted into recovery and indeed it is S-ON currently ).
So reading up on how to turn ON to OFF I see unrevoked and alpharev have a solution for windows and linux only. ( I have VM windows and a raspberry pi linux ( but i assume the pi would be too underpowered to do this update))
I have read the wiki and read on the FAQ on this site that if you are not running the stock HTC rom that there could be an issue, is that correct ?
After all this, I am really just trying to make a Ext-SD partition on my SD card, cause the rom is like 120mb of the 140mb internal partition and I can't install enough apps to be happy.. lol.
I have the CWR image of V5.0.2 but am not sure really how to update it ( V2.5 is green text and V5.0 is blue so im sure I have the older version )
Or im happy to use 4EXT for my rom needs, but I need to change my S-ON to OFF to be able to flash the recovery and partition it that way.
If anyone can help that would be great, the whole setup has been rather painless and i'd like to keep it that way, I need the phone to work, but I would like to install more apps on the phone. The ROM also has a script built in so that is not the problem, just making a partition on the SD card really is what I need right now.
Thanks,
Steve
would it be because im currently S-OFF that I can't flash recovery above V2.5.0 or install 4EXT Recovery ?
Are you SON or SOFF ? Write down what your bootloader says.
1. Alpharev quote
Requirements:
The only requirement right now is that the ROM you're running is rooted.
As techniques such as 'data2ext' have been popping up, these might disturb our finely-tuned flashing process.
Please revert to a rooted stock ROM if possible. Your /data partition is used for temporary storage of important files.

I dont know whether it will work with ICS though. I wouldnt try it since this is a bootloader mod. Maybe best to go stock rooted rom before running alpharev.
Revolutionary is the other option for getting soff.
I am S-ON,
I ran unrevoked to root my phone, I want to make it S-OFF now.
I am asking how I can do it with my ICS rom and I don't want any issues, but I want to be able to make a SD-EXT partition to run apps2sd.

Read my post. Best to go to a stock rooted rom before running alpharev. Thereafter flash 4ext. Partition your sdcard with 4ext. Flash rom of your choice.
Can I ask why it is better to go to a stock rooted rom ?
Installing the stock rom, and stock radio, to then run alpharev, to then root, to then install 4ext, sounds like a lot of work just to unlock the S-ON.
That is alpharev requirement. Read my first post.
Link for rooted stock romlink
Where does it say you need to run a stock rooted rom ?
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
the stock rooted rom that is U (updated) seems to be pulled and this guy has a URL at the top saying he has pulled the rom due to internal XDA fights.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1151765
My suggestion is to run 2.3 ruu from htc dev and then use revolutionary, two flies in one hit, s-off and custom recovery, and then flashing su over recovery. Though you'll get cwm recovery after first boot you'll be able to flash 4ext.
Sent from my GT-P3100 using Flashes and Thunders
Thanks for that nloooo,
I downloaded, unrar'd and unzipped the folder and can see the 2.3 RUU exe there, so I just run that in a windows machine ?
then rev, then reflash you are suggesting ?
is it worth trying revolutionary without returning to stock RUU and if it doesn't work, then installing the 2.3 RUU ?
It alk depends on hboit version your phone has. If it is 0.93 or 1.02 than it should work no matter which rom you have. I'm suggesting 2.3 ruu cause you'll get 1.02 hboot and you're good to go.
Sent from my GT-P3100 using Flashes and Thunders
My hboot is 0.93.
If 0.93 + revolutionary could work, I would prefer to do it that way because I am very green playing with android (mostly just use non-jailbroken apple gear) But I am loving the desire + ICS.
Thank you handy and nlooo for replying.
NLoooo should I be ok to try revolutionary without returning to stock rooted rom ?

[Q] Need Advice - Stock Desire Unrooted

Ok, I've got a stock Desire (with Three UK) unrooted and I was contemplating on flashing maybe an ICS/JB ROM.
But, I wanted some guidance on what would be the best way to start rooting, etc and any prtions that I need to be wary off.
I'm aware that the Desire does not have a lot of internal memory & did read a few threads on ways the internal storage can be optimised, but am still a little unclear.
I've already read about the unrevoked root process & have downloaded the necessary files. Also, have read on updating the modified USB driver, before rooting through Windows.
Some Guidance would be great ..
If your hboot is 0. 93 or 1. 02 Go to revolutionary.io for one stop solution for rooting/soff.
So, what would be the sequence I need to follow? Would the below sequence be the way to go about?
1. S-Off & Root: I have downloaded the unRevoked Root tool & I believe that it'll also offer S-OFF (Read the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044)
2. Before running the unRevoked Root Process, I need to update the Windows HBOOT drivers
3. I believe that the Desire has an internal memory (quite a small one) and my Desire also has an external SD card. I've read a few posts about re-partitioning the internal memory so that there's just enough space for a new ICS/JB Custom ROM, and more space for internal storage. But, I need more simpler info. here.
4. Do I have to update the radio as my Desire still have the 2/3 year old one??
5. Finally, I know how to flash a custom ROM, as I've done it several times on my other phone, Desire HD. I gained root & s-off on the DHD using the AAHK hit.
Unrevoked doesn't s-off. What's your hboot version?
To partition your sd-card properly, use 4ext recovery.

I don't have the phone right now with me as my sister is using it. I can check the HBOOT once I get the phone in a couple of hours.
I've just created a CD disk of GParted (Using ISO) and was planning to use that to create the partitions.
Where can I check for the latest radio for the phone..?
EDIT: Planning to follow this guide, step by step ..

Is it too old a guide a to follow, and will my HBOOT version determine the route that I'd need to take?
Have you tried going to recoverympde

I will get the HBOOT version once I get the Phone in a couple of hours.
Other Info I managed to get from my sister over the phone:
Android: 2.2.2
Baseband: 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
Kernel: 2.6.32.15
Build Number: 2.29.771.3CL345089
Software Number: 2.29.771.3
So, I see that there's a newer radio (5.17.05.23) .. Should I go ahead and Flash it? Will it Offer any improvements? Also, I'm in the UK with Three Mobile, does that matter?? i.e is the radio location specific??
na, the radio is the same for all. most devs roms these days say that u must have latest radio so ya mite aswell flash it. the best way to flash it is using fastboot commands, u can look at the guide in my sig and learn about that or if u have the older version of Clockworkmod Recovery (2.5.0.7) installed u cant just flash it like a normal zip file.

Ok, will flash the latest radio through Fastboot ..
So, the Desire Upgrade project commences tonight
ROOT, S-OFF, RECOVERY, GPARTED PARTITION, RADIO, and finally, JB ROM. Can't wait ..
EDIT: Any recommendations on a Stable JB ROM?
I'm looking at maybe the Evervolv or the MIUI or the CM10 4.1.2 one .. Some suggestions / feedback would help ..

no such thing yet as stable JB, but i would say try something stable for a while and get used to being s-off & rooted coz JB isnt stable and will probably end up causing u more problems than u need.

It says "beta" for a reason...
Ok, Im' stuck right now.
I tried to root using UnRevoked 3.32 and it failed gaining root, with a message that maybe a newer firmware.
I then tried revolutionary.io one and it successfully managed to S-OFF & installed CWM recovery 4.x.x . Then I move the Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip to the SD card to flash from recovery, to gain root.
But, when I get into CWM recovery, I see all the options but when I select any option all I see is the splash screen with 'revolutionary'. When I hit the power button I am returned to the menu. Only a battery pull gets me out
Need help now as I have S-OFF and No Root. By the way, I also tried another guide to 'root branded devices' and have converted my SD card to a Gold Card successfully. But, the guide doesn't explain how I can gain root after that ..

Are you pressing the trackball to select options within recovery? (Eventually I would recommend switching to 4ext touch recovery, much better and more intuitive)
You only need to flash the zip to root your current Rom, and install root apps like titanium to backup apps and data.
If you have nothing to backup you can already full wipe and install a custom Rom of your choice, because they will come pre-rooted
In terms of getting some much needed memory back what worked for me on my old Desire was to partition my SDcard and install S2e. This was on the CM7 rom but you get the idea...
If you say JB, there will be no recommendation.
If you say otherwise, a lots of options will be there.
You are using froyo. Why don't you go for GB? There are a lots of good ROMs out there.
