Do you think that will work for Mass Storage as well? I bought one off ebay for 1.49 so we can try it out. Hopefully it will come before friday morning so i can test.

Didn't thought of that, I'll try it out tonight.
If you're just taking the USB cable that came with the tablet, changing it's gender and plugging something into the end, it won't work. The tablet would need to have USB Host support which this tablet does not. I believe that the Samsung USB Adapter that converts directly from the Samsung Connector to USB Female will add USB Host support (USB OTG).
Here is the USB Adapter. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/EPL-1PL0BEGSTA

All 3.1 are USB host. However, the female to female adapter doesn't do the trick.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Honeycomb 3.1 adds SOFTWARE support for USB Host funtionality. The device has to have HARDWARE support as well. This tablet does not. That is the reason that you need a special adapter that provides USB Host HARDWARE funtionality, such as the one I listed above.

Well that blows. I just ran down to best buy to try and grab one of these adapters but they are back ordered. Said they have no idea when they will have them next.

I've got my fingers crossed Samsung hasn't dicked up the Bluetooth stack on the Galaxy Tab 10.1/8.9:

Sorry to dig up the old thread but did anyone get this to work? I would love to play emulators on this tablet!

Yes. There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. The tablet DOES have USB Host capability, but it will only enable it when it sees a specific resistor on a particular pin in the dock connector.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155065 for more details.
To get USB Host, there are two approaches:
1) Make your own cable with the correct resistors
2) Purchase the Samsung USB Host adapter which is now available for around $20.
Note that there are some limitations:
1) Xbox360 controllers and PS3 controllers are not standard HID devices and require kernel support not present in stock kernels. Pershoot's kernel has the necessary modules.
2) PS3 controllers must be fully charged before trying to use them. If not they will try to charge their battery from the tab and cause an overcurrent trip, disabling the port until the USB dongle is disconnected.
Also, Samsung didn't mangle the Bluetooth stack like they do with their phones, so wiimotes work.
Not working for me
Not sure if there's a specific USB setting, but I bought the adapted and it works with Chainfire's DSLR Controller no problem. I plugged in the playstation 3 remote and had no luck, nor any detection of the device. Tried running an n64 emulator to try to map the keys, no luck there either.
All of the guides seem to be using a Xoom, I'm on the brand new OTA on the GT10.1
Anyone else?
USB Adapter for Galaxy tab 10.1
Verizon wireless corporate stores have the adapter in stock they will have to order it but last time i checked they had about 4000 in the warehouse, I hope this is helpful for those of you who are patiently waiting.

Which kernel are you running? Did you read my notes in the post prior to yours at all?
So, if i get the official USB adapter my regular wireless keyboard (Logitech Wave) should work seamlessly. Right?
I've just been using the "SixAxis Controller" app from Dancing Pixel (you can find it on the Android Market) to connect my PS3 controller to my tablet over Bluetooth. It's worked great for me (note: I use yongzh's emulators)
Hope that helps with the PS3 issues...I don't really know much about the USB adapter as I don't use it.
Maybe a noob question, but would that work?
Primarily a usb stick that I would use that way

No, I have not tried it, but they say in this thread that it is not only about power but having a resistor as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149442
especially post #10
Tested. Nope, this does not work.
I assume the resister is needed to tell the Tab to send power to the USB.
The resistor is needed to cause the Tab to enter host mode. No resistor - you've got device-to-device and that doesn't work.
Would it be possible to splice the resistors into the female-female usb cable? 2 resistors and a cable is a really cheap way to go.

No, the resistors go between two dock pins that are not connected to the stock USB cable...
old thread, but i am in the need of the same.
would it theoretically possible to have a charging cable with a usb host part spliced in? i need to be able to connect a usb hid device AND keep charging the tablet. Would the current going into the tablet be mucking things up for the usb host operation?

It shouldn't since the charging +5V input is on separate pins from the +5 USB host power. But the Tab looks at the USB D+/- pins to figure out if it should do slow or high current charging. If it sees voltages that make it look like a host is on the other end of the pins, then it does 500mA max charging, and if the pins are floating it charges at max 2A. I don't know if host mode would screw that up. You could look at the kernel source, or just try it and see.
Checked about 10 pages of threads and couldn't find anything related to this. But does anyone know if it is possible to use USB OTG while the phone is docked. For example could you just plug a USB OTG cable into the microUSB slot in the back of the dock and connect that to a powered USB hub?
If anyone has a dock and a USB OTG cable could you test this out for me? Thanks

That's exactly what it is... USB ON THE GO. Basically let's the phone act in usb host mode to support external peripherals like mouse, keyboard, game pads, thumb drives etc

I used MHL adapter with my SGS2 and there was some 0.5s lag between phone and TV so most of the fast and action games was unplayable! even when the game was smooth as hell...is lag present with SGS3 and MHL adapter? THX
Can it used like otg cable for the usb port?

I have a sony 32" lcd tv. I was wondering if it would work with it? My allowable resolutions are 720p and 1080i.

I am selling mine, it just doesn't work good with tv's.
On my Panasonic and my Sharp lcd tv it doesn't gives full screen, the edges are cut and that sucks.
Doesn't matter what Screen settings I try, no 100% of the S3 is displayed.
Auto scale, normally is the best setting, but not working out for this adapter.
For gaming it isn't such a big deal, but when your notification bar is only half visible and the apps been cut on the aidea and bottom, that is irritating.
I looked for reviews on Youtube and you will see many people with this problem, also many where it works just fine but the problem is in the adapter or the S3 which isn't working as it should do.

If you have a spare hdmi port then it will work.

By any chance have you tried this with a USB hub / OTG cable to see if you could hook up a drive AND the MHL adapter?
Thanks!
Two question:
Are there any settings that i have to do first if i wanna connect the phone with my tv?
Can i see immediatly the screen at the boot time of the phone? And see it also in recovery or download mode?
thanks
When you plug in the adapter and connect it with the hdmi cable you will directly see the it, there are not settings for the mhl cable on the S3

This has been tried and it doesn't work.
Latest idea is hooking it up to an MHL enabled tv(meaning power coming this way) and use the USB port on the adapter for otg.

Well that ain't gonna work, the usb has only power as far as I know...
So you can try that, but the MHL adapter is not designed to use it like that. It needs the power via the usb connector.
But maybe, maybe you can get power via tv...

Yeah, newer TVs are designed to charge via MHL, though not sure if the official Samsung adapter supports it.

If you have an MHL enabled tv, the power comes from the tv so the USB on the adapter doesn't need to be used for power, hence I said you could try to connect and otg cable there instead.
It you have an MHL enabled tv then you don't need an adapter but just a cable like this instead

I know, but I don't think the charge port will work as otg....
As far as I know it is only for charge, and doesn't have the rest of the usb working.
I even doubt if when it has a full functional usb port, MHL allows to use MHL both with usb on the same time...

Guys,
I was wondering whether it´s possible to have a "connection chain" like this to the GNex ???
1.) Connect an OTG cable to the micro USB port of the GNex
2.) Plug a standard self-powered USB hub into the OTG cable
3.) Apply an USB-A to Micro-AB adapter and so connect the Samsung Micro-USB2HDMI adapter to the USB hub
4.) Connect a Logitech game pad
5.) Connect a USB stick, portable drive, ... you name it
What´s the purpose you´re sure about to ask ... Well, launch any emulator on the GNex, bring the video output to my 46 inch plasma and gamble old games with the game pad over the GNex.
Do you think, it´ll work? I don´t wanna spend all the money for all the adapters and stuff ending up in a mess.
Cheers
Christian
Don't think it will work honestly.
I don't think this device supports mhl and otg. Sounds like the galaxy s3 does with a special cable. That cable does not work on our phone.
