need help updating! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, when the original 2.2 update came out for the evo i was scared of updating because i figured there would be errors, but a long time has passed since then and i am now trying to update and my phone cant find it when i try to search through the settings-search for htc update. my evo is still on its stock 2.1, and i want to be able to update without any data loss and without having to hard reset. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Are you not rooted then? You can get the update on htc website. Or there's a thread in development with the newest RUU to update, if your rooted it's a different process

i am not rooted, i just didnt update since i got my phone lol
where can i get that update on their site? and how do i install it?

Htc website, choose support, choose Evo, then click downloads, will give you 3? Htc sync, a user manual and the recent software update
Edit : htc website showing 3.29, current is 3.70.
Try settings- system update then both htc update and firmware update

it explains how to install the download from the phone by doing the htc update thing but the problem is, is that it doesnt find anything when i do the search and there is no download link on the site
it says no update is available both from the firmware search and the htc software update check

have you thought of calling sprint and see if they can push it to your phone via ota

How do I know if my Desire is rooted?

I bought a handset off another forum a couple of months back and I think it's a fully unbranded handset, and have been trying to run the 2.2 update, except everytime I get to the green sync symbol after it restarts, I then get a red question mark.
I'm running
Firmware 2.1 update1
Build number .1.1.405.2 CL174215 release keys
Software number 1.21.405.2
So is this rooted? Either way, how do I get the Froyo update to work?
Many thanks!

You will know if it is rooted cos you wont be able to pull it out the ground lol
Only jokin if you phone is rooted you will have a program in your apps called super user.
hope this helps
I have something called superuser permissions. Is that it? As you can gather, I'm a bit of a thicky so an idiots guide would be great!

Yeah thats the one your phone is rooted
Ok. That answers the first part I guess then. Any ideas how I get to Froyo? I can download the update, but it always fails to do it's thing.
Do I have to restore the phone or what? And how?
is your phone branded in any way? even a start up logo ?
and where can you download the update? from system software updates on your phone?
There's no branding on the phone, box or software. I can download the update via software updates.
PS. Thanks for the help so far!
If you can download it from software updates go for it froyo here we go,
no branding is a good sign
Just try updating via the update manager as that should work.
LOL
That's the problem. It doesn't work!
Same thing with me....
I bought a Telstra Branded Handset. Had a company root and install a generic rom. (Telstra handset because it works on ATT 3G.) This morning, the phone told me that I had an Android Software Update (Version 2.2). The phone downloaded it, but wouldn't install. I imagine because the dang thing is rooted.
I will wait a few days for someone to offer a desire rom with 2.2 and HTC sense.
Is there an easy way to restore the handset to it's original software so I can upgrade from there?
Look for the Unrooting guide in the (sticky) guides collection. I believe it just involves flashing a stock rom. But currently you won't be able to root your phone after official OTA froyo update, since it flashes your hboot too. Alternatively you can flash a rooted froyo ROM without hboot.
Edit: Look in development forum for the sticky guide. The place to be for topics like this; it makes them obsolete.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Many thanks!

It took a bit of time to download all the updates, but I got there in the end.
My Desire is rooted, 2.1, not 2.2 Froyo, I wish. But I am trying to things in the file management like install and move around apk files. But it wont allow saying I have no permissions. Rooted to me means God access, but its not really god access. Any ideas why?

Even if you are rooted, you will have READ ONLY access to /system due to NAND protection. You can only write to /system from recovery.

2nd post. If you have a superuser app, you are rooted.

Rooted using R6, froyo 2.2 update

Hello all,
Firstly sorry if this has been asked and answered already.
I rooted using modaco r6 method a couple a months back to go from T-mobile to generic HTC ROM.
I have checked to see if the HTC update for 2.2 is coming but it isn't.
Just wondering if this is because I haven't updated a previous update, since my root to generic ROM I have been getting the option to download a 27MB update (I don't have my phone with me so can't check the exact version).
Do I need to apply all previous updates to get 2.2 or can I just update to 2.2
Hope what I am asking is making sense.
Thanks
you need to be on the latest version in order to download froyo 2.2
Thanks for the reply. Thought that might have been the case. As I'm not able to currently set up wifi connection on phone, is it possible to download all the updates onto my pc and update manually.

[Q] Cant unroot please help...

I am taking my phone back to sprint today to get it replaced because of screen issues, but i cant seem to unroot it i have tried the ruu.exe files but they give me errors saying i need to update something, then i tried just flashing an older rom and updating to android 2.2 but it wont install the update, can anyone help me? i was thinking i could maybe flash an unrooted file from recovery but i dont know where to find one :/
You say the ruu.exe is asking to update something? Can you be more specific...I mean is it just asking you to update to the latest HTC Sync drivers? I am not sure if I can personally help but that info would render a better reply from someone who possible could...
it says error 140 bootloader version error the rom update utility cannot update your android phone please get the correct rom update utility and try again :/
There are 3 different versions...try the 1.47 one and see how it goes.
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Supersonic/
yeah i get the same error on all 3 :/
I assume you have done a factory reset then tried? I got no further clue but this ^bump^ in hopes someone more qualified can see your issue quicker...
yeah i have factory reset all 3 times i tried, all i can think of that would not make it work is i have the 2.2 radios installed on it could that be it? because i unrooted my roomates evo just fine and the only difference was he didnt have the newer radios on it
There are other ways but as I just posted in another thread...
I would re-run root with the simple root 1.47 edition...this would get you back to a fresh root. Then re-try the 1.47 RUU.exe...
This has saved me a couple of times...

[Q] How can a apply the OTA update?

I got the OTA update and my phone shut off during the update and now when i try to use my video camera and my gps it doesn't work...also the 3g goes out occasionally. I got the .zip for the update from HTC, how do i apply it?
Try running the RUU for the latest release. I'm too new to post links, but here is the thread title: [ROM]RUU_Incredible_C_Froyo_VERIZON_WWE_3.26.605.1_Radi o_2.15.00.07.28_2k4k_NV_1.70. It's a few pages back.

How would I apply that?
It's an executable that runs on your Windows PC. You simply plug in your phone and let it go. It restores your phone to factory as if it had just come from Verizon (7.28 radio, stock HTC recovery, stock sense). RUUs are leaked from HTC and contain official builds of Android. The only modification that will stick is s-off if you had previously run Unrevoked Forever.
