[Q] Battery Life Problem - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using the set up in my signature and I am getting horrible battery life. I might change roms (as you all know) because of this...it sucks. What can be the cause of this? I have had my evo for 10 months now so I am wondering if it could be my stock battery. It could be the kernel? Who knows...
Here is some information:
No wake lock problem
Wifi at home
3G outside
Calibrated it once since I flashed this rom
Battery decreases 3-4% overnight when sleeping
Moderate to Heavy user: texting all day, 2 hours of internet, XDA, constant emails, news, engadget, and youtube
I can see the battery life decreasing at a rate of maybe 7-10% per hour when I use it
Starting to decrease much more than it used to
***Picture: Subtract 7 hours from the 18 because it was sleeping overnight***
Any suggestions would be appreciated. You guys have provided plenty of insight for me and I thank you all for that.

Your battery life actually isn't that bad depending on how much you use your phone. Buy another battery on ebay and see if that helps. If you're looking to compare usage, I'd buy a stock battery instead of a cheap Chinese one, that way your tests will be accurate.
If your battery life just sucks and you want more juice, buy a few cheap batteries and an external charger and switch batteries when you get low. That's what I do, and it's great not having to turn radios off or do other tricks just to last through the day.

You can try changing roms...I get 1day 5hrs roughly on CM7, stock battery. For how're you're using the phone, that seems about decent, in my opinion. As plainjane suggested, you can get some other batteries and swap them out.

Youre lucky! MY battery lasts like 6 hours with moderate use

With that battery life? Perhaps, but never in my days of rooting have I run CM6. I'm pure CM7. Not biased by any means; I've tried some things, but CM7 is my preference, and if you want a screen shot I can provide.

Sure a screen shot would be good. Don't get me wrong, I like CM7 but I read CM6 with the snap kernel provides amazing battery life. To each his own I suppose.

I don't have the newer one, as my phone is in the middle of doing some things, but that kind of battery life is attainable on CM7.

I'm having problems too... I'm running on Myn warm 2.2 rls 5 and it's not charging anymore! Battery life also sucks ass too! It's getting worse by the days. I plugged my phone in to charge last night, and woke up to 26 % WTH!? I don't know if it's my battery or the rom. Help?

It could be your charging port. Those things break way too easily. When it's charging, check it every few minutes to make sure the charging light is staying on. One of my Evos had a bad port and when it first started happening, I would catch the light turning off then back on.
It could also be your battery. If you have another one you can test, see if it's any better. Or you can take the battery to Sprint and have them test it. Replacement batteries are pretty cheap if you get them on ebay.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. I sure do hope it's the battery. I mean I do use it quite often to watch movies and what not so I'm not surprised if it's bad but I know it can be the port too because lately it's been acting crazy on me. Sometimes the light will be on, but it really doesn't end up charging. I don't know what it is. So if I take it into the sprint store to check the battery life and they won't say anything about my phone being rooted? Lol.

Battery Question (NOT a complaint, for once)

Hey all
So I, personally, don't have such an issue with the battery like other people. I'm coming from a near 2-year old G1, and i think the battery life and performance on the EVO is better, so i'm generally cool on this front.
But here's my curiosity question...
I'll charge up this badboy to 100% overnight.
When i take it off the charger, it dips down from 100% to about 95% in a matter of about 5 minutes.
After that, it's cool and lasts a while, so it evens everything out for me.
But i'm just curious as to why i have an almost instant 5% drop when i take it off the charger? Where does the 5% instantly go?
The Evo isn't topping the battery off, that's all.
I think I *might* know a solution, I believe I saw the phone stores battery "calibration" or something like that. I'll look into it eventually.
I had the same problem until I tried the trick I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701567
After doing this my battery doesn't plunge when I take it off the charger, the only thing im not sure about is how often this trick needs to be done, hope that helps.

[Q] How did this happen? (RE: battery life)

I'm running CM 7.0.2 with the Tiamat 3.3.5 (No SBC) kernel. Flashed the kernel after booting the ROM after the flash and my battery over the past three charges are as follows:
1st charge: 1 day, 7 hours till 5%
2nd charge: 1 day, 6 hours till 7%
3rd charge: 14 hours till 20%
I don't know what could have caused such a drastic change! Any clues? (Checked partial wake lock and nothing is doing anything unusual and I haven't added any apps anyway.) Furthermore, used my phone about the same all three charges.
Are you complaining about that battery life? One day and seven hours? Did I read that right or am I missing something?

He was wondering why the first and second day yielded over 1 day, and the 3rd day was less than half of that. There are a ton of variables in that situation though, so its hard to say. Maybe a rogue app or bad signal or something like that.

Ohhh, I see. I just noticed that the battery life was better than mine. My first response was to question why someone would complain about that. I use my phone for everything though... all the time. I stopped worrying about battery life and bought three cheap batteries and an external charger, now I'm set.
If you were in a different area with a bad signal, that could definitely account for the drop in battery life. My battery tanks if I don't have a signal at all, especially with 3g on.
Do you have an extended battery or just good battery life?
I have the stock battery. Maybe I just got lucky a few times! I mean, there's times where I've gotten 24 hours on Myn's Warm Z, which is a ROM that, while stunning and fluid, surely does suck a bit more battery up. Of course, most of the time, I got 12-15 hours on Warm Z.
Maybe it was just a fluke?
I had service almost the entire time. It was like 1% time without signal.
I most certainly was not complaining about the first two days! That battery life was amazing and I really didn't even think it was possible. I was really just wondering what happened to cause the extreme drop suddenly.
Hm. I wonder.

A rant about my experience with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. HELP!!

Let me start off with the good in this rant. This device is BEAUTIFUL and has A LOT of potential. Considering i just rooted it, it is even more fantastic BUT (there is always a "but" in life) here are my issues that i PRAY would go away. For some odd reason, though i have done everything i can to prevent it from happening, the battery life is just terrible! And here is the mind blowing part: My brightness is always at about 15-30 percent, my automatic sleep is at 15 seconds, i am never on 4G, NFC is off and my GPS is almost, always off. I recently learned that having a lot of black (Wallpaper, themes or simply a black display) going on prevents the display from eating up battery, therefore i've blackened what i use most (MMS, Gmail, Instagram and of course a black wallpaper) but after all of that, the battery still tends to suck major ball sack (sorry for the vivid image). If you must know i am using an AOKP rom, Jelly bean. I absolutely love the rom.
On behalf of that rant ^ .. Is there anything anyone could/would suggest i do in order to have a better experience with battery? Maybe a different rom that revolves around better battery life? Anything that i am missing to prevent battery from draining so fast? AM I THE ONLY ONE GOING THROUGH THIS?!
Last but not least, what gets me going and makes me want to punch something is the fact that my phone constantly, CONSTANTLY heats up for NO REASON (i'm assuming theres an actual reason but i have no idea what it is). After a full charge, i'd unplug the device and couple mins in after browsing web for like 60 seconds and texting, it'd start burning on the top of the screen and the back where the camera is. What is that all about?
And on behalf of that second rant ^ .. is there a solution for that? AM I THE ONLY ONE GOING THROUGH THIS?! lol
:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
Check out what my battery looked like after a few mins from unplugging it. Screen, 67% ??????
Believe it or not... I had a battery go bad already on me. Now i was short charging it and stuff like that.. but still. The early builds weren't as efficient as this one is. You might try a new battery. Or the oem extended one. I have had good luck with both routes. Oh, and i'm stock.
Lots of battery drain and a hot phone means that it's trying to do something. Looking at your screenshot, you're not having any signal problems, which would lead me to believe it's a rogue app. What was your total screen on time during that 48 minutes?

i honestly don't remember, i THINK it was probably 32 mins because thats what i see every time i see the battery that way. If that makes any sense.
Which kernel are you running with that rom? I had a JellyBean rom with a kernel that increased overall, but my phone would often heat up and battery life was not the best. Changed roms and kernel and everything is cool now.

32 minutes of screen on being 29% of your battery. That makes roughly 110 minutes of screen on for the entire battery. Running a stock battery? I never did, but I think people have said 2 hours screen on is the low end for a normal battery. I could be wrong, though.

Or the high end. I got mine as a replacement device for the Droid Charge, so I had to order a battery and back cover when they offered it to me. Since VZW had a 50% off sale on the 2100mAh battery and back, I went with that. So I've literally never used the standard OEM battery with the phone.
Try going to this link: http://minooch.com/franciscofranco/Galaxy Nexus/JB/Jelly Bean/
and downloading "franco.Kernel-r225-384GPU.zip" flash it in recovery like you would a normal rom. Franco's kernel is extremely stable and works magic for good battery life. Should also resolve your overheating issue. If not, I'd suggest a full wipe and installing a different rom.

I normally wipe cache, not sure if it's required. But yeah, it's not a new rom or anything, just different kernel to test out and see if the kernel is what was causing your battery issues.
I'm using the jbsorcery beta with the lean kernel and under clocked with the modded voltage and this is heavy usage on Facebook and texting and about 30 min on the phone I have about 2hrs 45min and im at 80%

[Q] Signs of a Bad Battery?

So, no matter what I do my battery life stays the same regardless of what rom or kernel I'm running. So now I'm wondering if it's my battery, but I'm thinking even if my battery was bad the rom or kernel should have some sort of effect on battery life. Does anyone know if this may be the cause of a bad battery or what else could be the issue, I know for sure it's not the rom or kernel so it has to either be a problem with my phone or battery but I'm not sure which one it is.
Try running a looped video run down test. And report what you get for screen on time.

Yeah I tested from 100%, I'm running Frosty JB v3.0, It's insanely smooth but like the other roms it wasn't able to increase my battery life. So far the only thing that will increase battery life is if I underclock the cpu. Other than that nothing else I've tried works.

I honestly don't think your battery life is that terrible. Streaming Netflix destroys your battery regardless of wifi or mobile data, and so does playing a game. Three hours of screen on time isn't that bad, especially considering you watched netflix for two hours and in your screenshot you have no bars of signal, which will also destroy your battery in a hurry.

There are no bars because I turned off data and was using wifi, I agree that netflix drains more than an average video played off the phone but I still think this is horrible. I mean 5 hours total is not something to brag about when your screen on time was only 3 hours, not to mention I underclocked to 1.2ghz to save power and was on the lowest brightness setting.

Battery reviews

I saw decent battery life in other reviews. One thing that caught my eye as a negative was that it had very slow charging times compared to other phones.

The slow charging time was in an early 4.1.2 build. It has been fixed though already in a previous update.
I read they turned off the fast charge mode for it, I think in an effort to make the battery lifespan last longer.
I read that it slowly charges the battery on purpose. It allows the battery to last longer since it's not removable. Apparently the fast charge fries batteries pretty quick.

Fast charging a battery phone is not really going to fry it... but there is truth that if you slow charge a battery, it will last longer.

What was your screen on time? The only other reason I can think of that contributed to this was all the setting up, syncing, and downloading that you may have been doing on this first full charge (unless you did that all of that prior to this full charge)
Edit: Nonetheless, thanks for sharing. Hopefully it is indeed going to be much better than that on a regular basis.

All I know is that in the first few days to a week of me having a new phone, I get horrible, HORRIBLE battery life. Why? Because it's shiny, it's new, it's interesting!
Give it a few days to a week and you will be back to mostly normal usage. I know that after the initial new phone excitement goes away, my battery life usually doubles.
Not to mention the battery cycle break in. I'm not sure if it's real or not, some people say it is, some say it isn't, but apparently it takes a few charge and discharge cycles for your battery to get to a normal state?

I read somewhere (pretty sure anandtech) that with these new batteries, it is advised against fully discharging. The optimal state is to charge it when it hits 75% ish.
If a battery dies, it dies, but you should not be purposefully killing it. I'll try to find the article, but I'm busy at work right now.

I don't know where you heard that, but for Lithium Ion batteries, over-discharging happens when you are around 2V or less... most phones will turn off when the battery gets to around 3.2V
Fully charged is roughly 4.2V
Most of these batteries are good for 250 to 400 charge cycles, It doesn't matter whether you are at 1% or 80%, the phone will stop charging once it gets to 100% since you cant trickle-charge Li-Ion batteries

I know the HTC One has been around a while on other carriers. Has anyone seen any reviews on how long the battery lasts?

From what I've heard the battery is good for a day at best.
I've been debating One vs. Maxx for a few days... so confused... Battery Life vs. Sexy!
Just got my HTC One from Verizon. I am coming from a Note 2 which got excellent battery life but the phone was huge. The battery life is actually decent. I had the DROID dna and the battery life on that was horrible. So far it's pretty decent.
