Battery Question (NOT a complaint, for once) - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all
So I, personally, don't have such an issue with the battery like other people. I'm coming from a near 2-year old G1, and i think the battery life and performance on the EVO is better, so i'm generally cool on this front.
But here's my curiosity question...
I'll charge up this badboy to 100% overnight.
When i take it off the charger, it dips down from 100% to about 95% in a matter of about 5 minutes.
After that, it's cool and lasts a while, so it evens everything out for me.
But i'm just curious as to why i have an almost instant 5% drop when i take it off the charger? Where does the 5% instantly go?

The Evo isn't topping the battery off, that's all.
I think I *might* know a solution, I believe I saw the phone stores battery "calibration" or something like that. I'll look into it eventually.

I had the same problem until I tried the trick I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701567
After doing this my battery doesn't plunge when I take it off the charger, the only thing im not sure about is how often this trick needs to be done, hope that helps.

Excalibur Shutting Down and Won't Restart unless..

Morning all , the past 3 days I have been noticing that my Excalibur just shuts down and won't restart unless I plug it into a power source and power on.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Sounds like you need a new battery
Thanks man - any specific one you can reccomend? Reason I am asking is cause I have seen people post different battery makes, models etc..
URL Links would be appreciated.
If that's all i have to do - it's an easy fix for a 200.00 phone!
Thank you.

Take a look on ebay i use a 1150mAh but go for the 2200mAh and you'll be impressed, if you do a search for battery on here you will see what people recomend.
If you are already on a spare phone, try giving your excalibur a full charge, and turn it off. Allow the battery to drain out completely. And if possible repeat this once or twice more. Complete power drain will improve the average life span, and can be done atleast every 3 months on all normal devices, so as to increase the lifespan

Nice, that is good to know... Never really knew that... Plus also I wanted to ask... is it bad to charge your phone everyday when it is like at 50% of battery life...
Nice question.
Think about a tank. You fill it with wet cement. And u take the wet cement for use slowly away. Almost as soon as the tank is 20-30 percent empty, the cement is filled gently again, so as not to shakeup the cement at the bottom. After a while the cement at the bottom hardens, and u cant get it out for use. And same happens with the total amount of cement u could pour in. Earlier if u needed 25 pots to fill it up, now it gets filled with 10 pots or so.
Now think about the battery with multiple cells arranged inside. You fill it up. Then u use up the top 3-4 rows of small cells, and immediately fill those cells right back. This keeps on happening. What happens is that, the cells at the lower rows are never emptied, and the charge remains static there forever, and after a while the cells just freeze up. Meaning, it is not possible anymore to fill them up, or to use up the containing charge. So when u start filling up, the battery says charged fully pretty soon, cos there are less cells to fill up, and good enough, the charge falls dead soon too.
The above analogy was true on the days on Nickel Cadmium batteries. Now a days with Lithium polymer batteries, what they say is the charge is not stationary at one particular site and keeps on revolving all inside, so there is no question of dead cells arising. Well theoretically yes, but practically what the geeks suggest is to charge the battery only after completely draining it. Well, not really feasible with our busy lifestyles, as we cannot start a day taking the 30 percent battery with us.
This is what I have been doing, Charge it up as much as I need it during the weekdays. During weekends, when I am near a powersource, I keep it until it drains as much as empty. And once every 2-3 months, I try to make it empty fullest.
So I guess, it is more of a personal choice of ease also. Though the current dictum is that, charging the batteries at whatever level is ok, experience has shown many users to allow complete drain occasionally
thanks CC.. i will try that..give it a full die out and charge it up again.
If that doesn't work i'll get a new battery.
Appreciate it!
since you seem knowledgeable on batteries... i also wanted to ask how long do the batteries typically remain "usable" to a decent amount...
Aah not at all knowledgable. All I know is my own personal experiences plus data from a million sites that I read.
The typical duration and lifespan of a battery depends mainly on the capacity first of all, the more milliamps u have, the long lasting a battery is. Also the average life depends a lot of the number of charge cycles. Means, if u r a light user, u wnt have to charge it every now and then, the batt will slowly discharge, and then u charge it once or twice in a week.
For heavy users,at times myself included, I put it on charer more than once in a day. There the total number of chare cycles that the battery is alloted gets used up early, and the battery dies early.
A third factor is the amount of load we give to the OS. Not just playing heavy games or apps, but making calls in low reception areas as well as placing our hands over the antenna portion of the celphone while making calls, increase the load, and cause the battery to drain faster

i have the same problem with my phone just shutting off after about an hour on, only turning back on when plugged into a power source.
i've got a 2200ma battery on the way and i can't effing wait for it to get here.... i really hope it solves the problem cuz i already reinstalled the kavana rom thinking it was a software bug. reinstalling gave it a breath of fresh air nonetheless, while its on. lol

Hey man - please reply on this post when you get the battery replacement to let us know if that helped solve the issue. If not i'll have to jump in the market for a new smartphone.
Theres nothing worse than being on a business call and you loose the call - and your phone usability with no power source around.
Please keep us posted.

Battery calibration app

Could someone please develop a good app that would enable the battery to be drained as much as possible and to charge slower so we could all properly calibrate our batteries?
Do we really need this since it's a Li-ion battery? I know Ni-Mh and Ni-Cad has memory effect, but not on the Li-Ion battery.
I was just wondering the same thing today....simply because there seems to be several different methods to do it. Some say charge 8 hours, turn off, charge and hour, unplug, turn on charge 10 minutes. Then other methods say to do something different....be nice to have an app to walk you through different methods so you know step by step your doing it right
I calibrated mine last night and I'm going to get about 18 hours if not more from it....before yesterday I was getting 9.
The ONLY other different I did was make some profiles on CPU but I cant imagine it would make that much of a difference. I bet its a mix of both

That is to funny I was just saying to my wife the other day that I should make one of these programs seeing that there are none already. I hate having to manually kill my battery every night before I charge it again.
Is it needed? It depends on your school of thought, some say yes, some say no. All I know is that on the few devices I have had in the past, if I constantly plug them in to "top them off" then the battery never ends up lasting very long after a few months of doing that. So I am a believer in killing the battery before charging on devices like these.
So the bottom line is if there is a desire for this, I may try to put an app together for it, as I know myself I am interested I just didn't think many others would be.
All the battery calibration tools, are basically deleting the file... right?
Is it that hard to boot into recovery and wipe battery stats?

I think the second part has to do with hardware. The phones hardware just doesn't have trickle charge implemented and instead lets it drop back down to 90% then starts charging it again.
As for the second part, it came on our phones, even has a default widget. 4G

Um... actually that is (by most accounts) bad for Li-Ion. You want to AVOID completely draining them. All of this stuff is more art than science, but I have way more often heard that completely draining LI batteries is bad. What kills them is the number of cycles they have been through (like -25 +25, -25 +25, -50 +50 would be a full cycle).
You do however want to give them a full up down cycle once in a while (maybe every 1-3 months) for calibration.
Then again, as I said, it is more art than science, and I have heard your method as being better, but the not draining argument seems to be the vast majority.
I'll try to do a little look-see and update this or repost if I find any stronger evidence.
the thing about my phone and battery that ALWAYS baffled me was i would plug it in at night be it at 10% or 22 i would leave plugged in while slept i would wake up unplug and look at battery percentage and it would be like 95.....no other phone has even unplugged and dropped 5 percent by doing nothing????
turn your brightness to 100% and change it so that it never turns off; use wifi tether and play a 720p movie at the same time; oc your kernel to it's highest stable frequency. it'll drain pretty quickly.
I know I might get flamed for this....
Apple suggests, with their laptops, to once a month or so, run the battery completely down. Then let the battery cool down for a little bit. Then give it a full, uninterrupted, overnight charge. I forget if they said to repeat this a second time, then you're good.
This is all from memory of me reading this a couple years ago or so, so our might not be verbatim. Their laptops use lithium ion technology...
(and they used to blow up and melt down too!) Lol!

That's because the phone stops charging when it reaches 100%, and runs off of battery probably until it reaches in the low 90s, then charges again. You won't ever notice this because the light will always be green. However, you'll notice that unplugging it a few moments after it turns green, the battery will stay anywhere from 100%-98% for a while. At least on my phone it does.
Is there any way to make this program "auto run" during sleep so it can do everything it needs to do during the night charge (similar to quickpull for blackberry)

I am by no means an expert so if you find any reliable info on this and can link us to read, I would love to learn more. All I know is that it is commonly said to drain rechargeable batteries and that I have seen that topping them off very often does lead to battery life degradation.

There is no need to fully drain the battery. Its purpose in calibration is to configure the software that is correlating voltage to percentage charged. That's all. Regarding the old Apple advice, that is doing the same thing. It will not affect the hardware.
Now, what WILL affect the hardware is charging itself. Every charge/discharge cycle will reduce the total capacity of the battery. This is why the EVO will not cycle on it's own until 10% discharged. It's improving the overall battery life by that restriction.
In short, you will save money overall by getting a higher capacity battery that you don't force to charge too often. Draining your battery does nothing but give you peace of mind and it only really needs recalibrating when it's total capacity has been reduced which isn't often. 3-6 months.

Btw - what are the charging calibrations people are using? Are you seeing one working better than another?
Im a noob, so take what I say worth a grain of salt but yesterday I did the standard method where you fully charge...turn off...plug back in until led changes green and do it a few times.
I went from 9 hours to 17 hours with no other changes except a few profiles in setCPU.
I did this just last night so my results are fresh.

A few SetCPU profiles is all it takes to see a dramatic increase in battery life, especially while screen off. If you disable it I bet whatever gain you think was from 'calibrating' it disappears.

What is up with my battery?

I'm a new Epic owner, still learning the quirks of this phone. I am having issues with my battery giving me a proper charge. I need a reliable GPS for a 3,000 mile road trip coming up, and this phone is all I got... so it needs to work. My issue is that the phone never seems to know how much battery it really has, and often appears to loose battery even while charging, but I'm not convinced that it actually is. So I did a little test. Went on a 15 drive, everything off except for GPS. Played music through the phone, and had the nav up the whole time, with the phone charging.
Started at 70% battery. After getting to my destination in 15 minutes, I was at 64%.
I rebooted my phone, and when it came back up, the battery was at 24%. I did some shopping, and texted my wife pretty much the whole time, phone stayed at 24% for the entire trip.
Rebooted again when I got back to the car, and it jumped up to 36%. Same deal on the ride home, music + nav up for a 15 minute ride. It was still at 36% percent this time when I got home.
So, what's with all the inconsistency here? Is this normal? Should I get a new battery? I'm running SFR 1.2 with Genocide kernel, 200-1000 conservative, and everything undervolted slightly.
Have you tried fully charging your battery and wiping the battery stats through Clockworks? Also I'll have to do some digging but if I remember correctly the reboot thing is a known bug. I believe they said it has something to do with the reboot script. I'll see if I can dig up the link for ya.

I've wiped battery stats between flashes, but not recently, and not on a full charge. I will try this.
Let us know how it goes, so I can try it.
Well after doing that, my battery life yesterday was probably the longest it's ever been with this phone. Next time I go out, I'll throw it on the car charger again and see if it still drains while using it.
Yeah the proper way to calibrate it is by charging it fully first after a successful flash and then wiping the stats. I usually do a full charge with it on then turn it off and wait til it fully charges again (led turns blue) then boot into CWM and wipe its stats.
No luck, tried it out yesterday and got the same thing... battery drains while on the car charger (tried two chargers). Also get the jumps in % when rebooting, but only sometimes.
I ordered an extended battery for now, hopefully it will do the trick to get me through my move.
It's not an answer likely to make you happy, but the type of car charger you use and the car's electrical output are a factor here. I have personally seen a large difference in recharge time and ability depending on those factors. It may be worth your while to gamble on another $15-30 for a well-reviewed charger. It's definitely made a difference for me.

That's what I did. I had a cheap charger, and it didn't work well so I dropped $20 on a Griffin one, and it was no better. I never had a problem keeping my HD2 or Nexus S 4G.
Also, just for ****s, had the phone on a wall charger and made sure to keep the screen alive texting and playing WF... slowly but surely the battery drained while on the charger. So, not my car either. Seems like the screen being on absolutely murders my battery.
Sounds like a pretty scientific review, so that result sucks. However I would actually now throw some suspicion on your battery and/or phone itself. Reason I say so is that I am a heavy phone user at my office and also have screen awake and a lot of use for music and video playing and 4G audio streaming while on wall charger, and consistently get into the upper 90s or full charge while using it so much. See if Sprint will throw a new battery your way, and maybe that will help?

I didn't get the phone subsidized through Sprint, so it has no warranty. I doubt they would help me.
Download Spareparts and see if there are any processes hogging the system, especially in the partial wake lock list. It very well could be a faulty battery although I can't recall anyone ever having a battery issue on this board.

BTW, I am running rooted stock EC05, no other mods except some frozen apps and Roam Control. I wouldn't wager that necessarily makes the difference, but you never know.

I have one more thing to try first.
I've been using Launcher 7. There are lots of complaints about this being a battery hog. Going to give things a shot with ADW and see how I do.
Never heard of Launcher 7. I've seen ADW on the Market, but never tried it. I've used TouchWiz when I first got my phone, but lost it when I rooted with SFR. I am using LauncherPro right now, so try that one.
Also, I read that GPS is a major battery drain for smartphone. I never had a problem using GPS on my Exclaim, so maybe its the GPS drinking up a lot of the battery fluid?
Tbh, you should not worry if your vehicle has an adapter (either itself or cig lighter) and plug it in when the battery goes low.

Launcher 7 mimics WP7. I'm all for a clean, simple look, and as such, really like it. But its a CPU hog.
ADW is wonderful, and for most of my time with android its all i've used. I've got the paid version. Went ahead and installed it, and so far, so good. Setting it up with my phone on a charger, and my battery is finally going in the right direction while using the phone
I'll go for a drive somewhere tomorrow and see if it charges in the car while running ADW.

Battery reviews

I know the HTC One has been around a while on other carriers. Has anyone seen any reviews on how long the battery lasts?
I saw decent battery life in other reviews. One thing that caught my eye as a negative was that it had very slow charging times compared to other phones.

The slow charging time was in an early 4.1.2 build. It has been fixed though already in a previous update.
I read they turned off the fast charge mode for it, I think in an effort to make the battery lifespan last longer.
I read that it slowly charges the battery on purpose. It allows the battery to last longer since it's not removable. Apparently the fast charge fries batteries pretty quick.

Fast charging a battery phone is not really going to fry it... but there is truth that if you slow charge a battery, it will last longer.
I had the HTC One on T-Mobile for a while before switching back to Verizon and it got through the day with moderate to heavy usage. Overall you should be able to get a day out of it at least

What do you have now? Would you recommend the HTC one?

Power Saver
Did Verizon remove Power Saver from their model? I can't find a setting anywhere. I know that 4.2.2 removed it from the notification screen, but it's not under the battery settings either. Anybody know?

I'm back to the HTC One. The only reason I gave it up was T-Mobile coverage was terrible in my area
OK...My first full charge from 100%...the results???
I'm at 6% after 7 hrs 53 Mins
After a full days work (8 hrs) w/ my S4, I usually have about 65% left...I am hoping it will get better!

What was your screen on time? The only other reason I can think of that contributed to this was all the setting up, syncing, and downloading that you may have been doing on this first full charge (unless you did that all of that prior to this full charge)
Edit: Nonetheless, thanks for sharing. Hopefully it is indeed going to be much better than that on a regular basis.
It'll be a few weeks before I can tell if the phone's batter is any good. I'm spending a lot of time on it.

Yea they did, there is a Qualcomm snapdragon specific power saver app in the play store that is supposed to be a viable replacement.

All I know is that in the first few days to a week of me having a new phone, I get horrible, HORRIBLE battery life. Why? Because it's shiny, it's new, it's interesting!
Give it a few days to a week and you will be back to mostly normal usage. I know that after the initial new phone excitement goes away, my battery life usually doubles.
Not to mention the battery cycle break in. I'm not sure if it's real or not, some people say it is, some say it isn't, but apparently it takes a few charge and discharge cycles for your battery to get to a normal state?

I read somewhere (pretty sure anandtech) that with these new batteries, it is advised against fully discharging. The optimal state is to charge it when it hits 75% ish.
If a battery dies, it dies, but you should not be purposefully killing it. I'll try to find the article, but I'm busy at work right now.

I don't know where you heard that, but for Lithium Ion batteries, over-discharging happens when you are around 2V or less... most phones will turn off when the battery gets to around 3.2V
Fully charged is roughly 4.2V
Most of these batteries are good for 250 to 400 charge cycles, It doesn't matter whether you are at 1% or 80%, the phone will stop charging once it gets to 100% since you cant trickle-charge Li-Ion batteries

I know the HTC One has been around a while on other carriers. Has anyone seen any reviews on how long the battery lasts?

From what I've heard the battery is good for a day at best.
I've been debating One vs. Maxx for a few days... so confused... Battery Life vs. Sexy!
Just got my HTC One from Verizon. I am coming from a Note 2 which got excellent battery life but the phone was huge. The battery life is actually decent. I had the DROID dna and the battery life on that was horrible. So far it's pretty decent.

[Q] Weird battery issue

Hey guys, just got the phone on Saturday. It's been awesome until today. I noticed it has been draining super fast. I put it on the charger and it would not charge past 89%, and at 89% it said there was 1m left until full. I turned off the phone and let it charge to 100%, but when I turned it on it almost immediately dropped to 90%.
What could be the issue? Do you think a simple factory reset could fix it, or should I take the phone back to Best Buy for a new one?
Edit: using the corded charger that came with the phone
This just started happening to me as well.
My phone will say fully charged, and when I unplug it will immediately drop to ~91-93%. Not sure if it's a faulty battery or what not, as I too have been using the wireless charger and block given to me with the phone.
I'm going to Best Buy during my lunch today to see if they have any idea and will update if there's any useful news.
that is weird. I haven't had the issue on mine, though I only charge with a USB cable (I don't have a wireless pad). From my rooting days, there is a battery config file that remembers things like battery charging history, so a factory reset might be useful, though it's a painful process to get a phone back up and customized fully after a reset.
Hopefully best buy has a better answer...though it might be as simple as replacing the phone, to which a factory reset might have been easier...
Anchor - how is the battery life on your phone?
I think my battery might be a defective one as I can barely get through half of a day with 1 1/2 hours of SOT - and that includes taking several steps to try to maximize battery life.
Just a quick update:
Stopped by Best Buy today and talked to a surprisingly knowledgable Samsung person. He said I'm the second person with an issue like this and believes it's a faulty battery, so they're going to give me a new phone.
To my knowledge this is the only explanation as my battery was lasting half a day.
Same here... I just got this phone yesterday and the battery drains very quick. I will return it and get the htc M9.

Final Update: Battery has been much much better on the new phone. Previously I'd be around 50% by lunchtime and today I'm at 85% with nearly the exact same use.
what was your usge in your previous phone?
