HTC Desire or Desire S? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm planning to buy one of these. Please tell me which mobile is better?

The Desire S is a replacement for the Desire. With the Desire S, you get a newer CPU, more internal memory, better camera, pretty much better overall. Go and have a look at the specs on htc.com. If I was in your spot, I would buy the Desire S, although if I didn't have the Desire right now, I would most likely get the Sensation.

the desire, the desire s is a letdown... has lots of bugs and doesnt live up to its name...

And, most importantly, Desire S has a signed bootloader, so you can't flash custom roms - and maybe never will.

Wow... thx for the info, and then I would say Desire!
Im way to hooked up on flashing, and there is way to many good things
to get by flashing.

That's odd on the desire s development page the first custom Rom has been rekeased, and root has been achieved, I think you should ask the question on their threads I could be wrong!

Afair it is a question of luck if you get a s-on or s-off device. If you've got an s-off device, you can achieve temp root, delete apps, stuff like that. If you're unlucky, you're s-on and can't do anything.
But even if you are s-off, you can't flash aosp roms for example.
But to get a definite answer on that, check the desire s forum - and please correct me if I'm wrong

Like Kevin said.
Because HTC also updated the HBOOT the usual Unrevoked method won't work.
All you can do is wait for the day the developers find a new way in or around HTC's new security.

How likely do you think this is? Will the developers bother working on this? My brother was holding out on the root/custom ROM option hoping the 2.2 update would get rid of some of the lag... and is now disappointed that he can't root it because of the change.
hope they find a way. Really need OC. Little brother just got zte blade which is lot better and costs 100€ less than wildfire :/

I do not know, I am not a developer. However usually it takes a couple of weeks. Developers are proud people. If something made their hack not work anymore they will hack it back just to show how good programmers they really are

No, and I am pretty sure when there is, there will be 10 threads proclaiming it.
Just be patient.
Hi guys,
I was good happy with my DK custom rom 2.2, then foolishly I tried one of the stock rom for HTC WF India, and then applied the OTA update, now stuck with unrooted WF 2.2. I suppose, if I take my WF back to HTC support, would they be able bring my WF back to 2.1, and then I would again root my device, since now my warranty is retained after flashing with the stock rom.
Any guesses on that.

You can ask them, but, its extremely unlikely they will do that, and, I am pretty sure they wont.
Sorry mate, but it is entirely your fault you applied the OTA, even when there are so many threads proclaiming that you shouldnt apply it, if you want to keep root.
don't know but sure it will be interesting if you can post if they do.

Customer services were not born yesterday.
If they do decided to give you Éclair back then you can guarantee that it will be done with the new Hboot version on it and not with the old.
It's highly unlikely though.
They will know that the only reason you want the old O/S and Hboot back is so that you can hack it. Unless of course you can provide them with real solid evidence that for some reason your Wildfire really does need to run the old O/S and Hboot.
All you will get is you have to have the upgrade due to performance security etc etc.
And if they do decided to give you back the old Éclair O/S you can bet your left testicle it will have the new Hboot.
i updated my wildfire to 2.2 it doesnt lag it only runs smoother and faster specially the wifi

GB OTA and the new hboot 0.82.0008- lots of questions

I haven't flashed the new hboot yet. I'm currently running CM7 and have the eng hboot 0.76.2000 with s-off.
As promised, here are the questions:
1) Has anyone flashed the new hboot and tried to restore a custom rom?
2) If I flash the new hboot (0.86.0008) will I be able flash back to the eng hboot?
3) What are the differences between the two? I usually use cwm/recovery, but if I need the hboot, I would like to be able to flash all the partitions. Is this still possible with the SHP version?
4) the nb0 files seem like I could flash them via "flash hboot" and skip the zip or disk destroy. Does this make anyone nervous?
5) I lost track of all the rooting going on... I rooted with gfree before there was a version number. Is there a root method that unlocks even more?
Thanks in advance... I've been playing with the ASUS transformer lately which has an unlocked, unbrickable bootloader, so I know I should slow down before getting to flash happy with hboot.
Why do you want to flash a new hboot? Something wrong with your device or something?

Stick with the ENG HBOOT -- it has more of the fastboot commands enabled.
I think we all plan on sticking with eng hboot. Still doesn't answer the question about what is different with the new one.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Hboot changes are typically to add security (i.e., take away your freedom), not add new features or make anything better. Unlike the radio, it will NOT affect performance. This is just a bootloader, like GRUB or LILO. Once it hands the CPU off to the Linux kernel, its life is over. As long as it does that correctly, there is no reason to change it.
Thank you 234 I think that is the kind of answer we were looking for I would hit thanks but am on the mobile app.

What "features" are missing from the existing hboot? If it aint broke dont fix it, definately a case of theres a new version must flash it must be better, think will stay on my old boring hboot that does what i need it to do until the wiki is updated.

Hold my beer, I'm gonna flash the new hboot!
There's nothing wrong with hboot- I'm just asking about what differences there are. I never asked if it was better. I understand that it's not an engineering hboot, but I don't know what features are "missing" from it. This is the exactly the question that I'm asking. I know that flashing a new hboot will not increase my battery life or improve my radio reception. I know that flashing hboot can be dangerous and lead to bricked devices. I know that flashing hboot will not solve world hunger, resolve the world debt crisis, or bring peace in the Middle East.
I think if I asked about a new ROM, people would just tell me to flash it and find out for myself.
Flashing hboot can be dangerous and possibly brick your device. I do not recommend it. This thread is for entertainment purposes only!

No offence buddy but why do you want to flash a new hboot then? You mention different ways to root but as far as I am aware the wiki is the "official" recommended way, will stick with what Ive got until such times as the wiki recommends changing my hboot, that is the only guide to rooting that I need.
I never said I wanted to flash it. I just asked what was different about it. What changed from the old stock hboot? Maybe the partition layout is different and there is more memory allocated to data? I don't know, hence the questions.
As some people have asked, if it ain't broke, then why fix it? Then why would HTC/T-Mo change it? I'm just curious about the changes.
I agree, for most users, they would never need hboot. The zipped up roms and radios are just fine for flashing in recovery.

I agree with you. There's nothing wrong with wanting to know what does the new hboot do. Furthermore, the only thing "wrong" with knowing more is that you get more awesome stuffs, kinda painful isn't it?
And, "if it ain't broke, then why fix it", why are we using HTC Vision here, not Nokia 1100, or better yet, smoke signal?

[Q] Flashing Cyanogenmod 7 to my DHD, is my research correct?

Basically what it says in the title. I have a Desire HD with Android 2.3.5 installed, and I want to flash Cyanogenmod 7.1 (With google apps) to it. I've had a good look at all the resources available and I think I know what I need to do, I'm a little apprehensive though as I'm new to this so would somebody mind checking the resources I have found to see if I have the right steps?
First of all I've checked in About Phone -> Software Information and found that my Software Number is 3.12.405.1. So from what I've read this means I'll have to downgrade my firmware before I can root.
That lead me to this guide: Here
If I follow that guide carefully as well as this one here, I will end up with a phone that has firmware 1.32, is rooted, has Radio S-OFF and also has clockworkmod recovery installed.
From there, I can then follow this guide here to install the latest version of Cyanogenmod either using Recovery, or the ROM manager. Simple, right?
Does this sound about right? Or am I missing something incredibly obvious that will break my phone, or make life a lot easier?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Thanks! That looks good, although I'm not very confident about this little warning.
Doing this WILL severely degrade bootloader performance on Inspires (and likely DHDs) and causes issues trying to install RUUs. In other words, it WILL jam you up. (Note: Issue now confirmed on later DHDs - ignore at your own risk).

Am I reading this correctly, following this method WILL degrade my bootloader performance? Or will that only happen if I perform the hack incorrectly?
You are reading it wrong. What has happens especially with us inspire users(American dhd) is that if your phone was shipped with gb, installing the Eng bootloader(Eng soff) causes issues. Makes the phone take 15 min to boot. Its possible to fix but its a long pita. I only seen a couple people with dhd have this issue so and others not.
Regular soff is all you need, just you can't use fastboot to flash say radios, its done in a different way

New to rooting HTC Desire

So, I told my friend I'd help him root his HTC Desire. Thing is, when he first got it, which was apparently shortly after it came out, he had it rooted. The guys said, however, that it was a partial root. I don't know what that means. Also, he has the super user app, but no recovery installed. Also, I've looked over the guide for rooting the phone and getting S-OFF. (I have an EVO 3D) It's so different from my phone that I am not sure what bootloader version this phone has.
I know that it is locked, KINGDOM PUT SHIP S-ON, HBOOT 1.22.0000. If there is any help, I'd appreciate it. I'd be alright if it weren't rooted at all, but since it's partially rooted, I'm not sure.

HTC Kingdom is the codename for HTC Evo Design 4G or HTC Hero S
(HTC Bravo is the codename for HTC Desire)
so root methods in this forum won't be of much help.
i'm not sure what your aim is:
- rooted phone? if you have superuser app it's likely that you're already rooted. try running an app that requires superuser permissions e.g. titanium backup
- custom rom? then you will need custom recovery, i couldn't find the xda forum for evo design 4g, so try google for a guide on how to install one for that phone.

Also, yeah, he said it was a partial root (not sure what that means) and as for the custom recovery, he doesn't have one, which you usually get one when you root the phone (CWM Revolutionary usually). Thanks for the info, I'll check out google when I get home.
I think by partial root here might mean that the phone is not s-off yet

Urgent questions about Root + S-off

Hey guys,
I am currently coming from a HTC Desire HD and am planning on picking up a One X tomorrow from a guy who got it with his phone contract.
It's about two months old and simlock free.
I cannot seem to find an answer to some really urgent questions I am having now..
From what I've read it is much harder (or impossible?) to succesfully root and S-off the device then for example on my HTC desire HD?
Is this true? I would like to use the ARHD rom but I am not sure now if I can make it work without being stuck on one ROM or not having any custom roms at all.
Can someone please explain to me what is really the situation with the One X currently.
is it possible to root and s-off so I can flash different roms? and are there any other relevant things I should know?
I'm hoping on a quick answer before I pull the trigger and buy a One X
Thanks a million for anyone helping me out here!

Do you only need root acces then? and I guess you cannot just flash .zip files like from a custom recovery (like 4EXT recovery) like I did it on my Desire HD or can I?
What part are we essentially missing right now with the Security being on?

The bit where you can make it look like you never had a custom ROM and recovery installed.
On htcdev.com, there is an unlock method, but HTC have been known to invalidate their warranty for unlocked phones.
Your statutory rights are not affected, but it you'd have to go back to the retailer with problems (at least in the UK)

First of all,
Thanks a lot to everyone who have been answering my questions.
Okay so if I read and understand everything correctly it is still relatively simple to install custom roms but I need a computer everytime I install a new ROM and HTC can see there was a custom recovery and ROM installed. (and this will possibly void my warranty)
Is that the right way of summarizing this or is there more?
and.. do you guys think there will ever be a S-OFF option?
Thanks in advance:good:

Okay. thanks
I hope we might see a S-OFF for the one x in the near future then!
so to be clear, when I receive my phone tomorrow and want to install a custom ROM (for example android revolution)
I need to:
1. Root the phone
2. Install a custom recovery (like clockworkmod)
3. and then what?
because the description in the Android Revolution ROM topics states:
" You need:
HTC One X unlocked with htcdev.com (S-ON) or S-OFF <-- but I do not have to unlock it via htcdev to be able to install it?
ClockworkMod Recovery or 4EXT Touch Recovery (coming soon)
Firmware package from downloads section" <-- and does he mean by firmware package just ROM or?
sorry for all these questions but I am new to the One X and this other procedures
Thanks for the help and patience
You need htcdev unlock for permanent root.
Then you flash clockworkmod, take a backup and flash Rom and kernel (boot.img).

aren't there any manuals or guides for this? I tried to find something detailed but I could not find it.

Okay thanks, I will check it out.
...or u take a look at THIS
Just so you know, once you unlock the bootloader there is no going back. You can relock it but it will show RELOCKED instead of LOCKED. So HTC will always know, and they can deny warranty claims if they chose to do so.

I think that only warranty connected with software not hardware
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Don't root it today use it for a few days quite a few devices have had issues out of the box if test it first,
The warranty thing is all hearsay we have no fact I've heard several people get their phones fixed/replaced htc are legally obliged to stick to their warranty especially if it is a hardware fault. Not 100% sure on where we stand but htc can't just cancel our consumer rights
Sent from my HTC One CMX
Okay guys just received my one x.. so some of you suggest to wait before unlocking, rooting and flashing? (Just to test hardware or wait for soff?)
So are there many 'problem' phones?
Thanks guys

It's like this: There are statutory rights. In addition to that there is a warranty. HTC are perfectly within their right to cancel a warranty, but your statutory rights continue.
In the UK, in practice, your rights are with the retailer, unless you purchased it on credit, in which case they stand with the finance company (in theory, but as a matter of practicality, hit up the retailer first).
Oh, IANAL.
