Urgent questions about Root + S-off - HTC One X

Hey guys,
I am currently coming from a HTC Desire HD and am planning on picking up a One X tomorrow from a guy who got it with his phone contract.
It's about two months old and simlock free.
I cannot seem to find an answer to some really urgent questions I am having now..
From what I've read it is much harder (or impossible?) to succesfully root and S-off the device then for example on my HTC desire HD?
Is this true? I would like to use the ARHD rom but I am not sure now if I can make it work without being stuck on one ROM or not having any custom roms at all.
Can someone please explain to me what is really the situation with the One X currently.
is it possible to root and s-off so I can flash different roms? and are there any other relevant things I should know?
I'm hoping on a quick answer before I pull the trigger and buy a One X
Thanks a million for anyone helping me out here!

root= yes
s-off= no but being worked on by 2 brilliant dev's (at least them 2 if not more?)
You can flash different roms yes but would need to see which action is needed for each rom, i.e some need cache etc wiped blah blah blah

hmm.. still a little confused here but I appreciate your help! :good:. how can it be possible to flash/install custom ROMS when the phone is still S-ON?
Do you only need root acces then? and I guess you cannot just flash .zip files like from a custom recovery (like 4EXT recovery) like I did it on my Desire HD or can I?
What part are we essentially missing right now with the Security being on?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can make this clear to me

The bit where you can make it look like you never had a custom ROM and recovery installed.
On htcdev.com, there is an unlock method, but HTC have been known to invalidate their warranty for unlocked phones.
Your statutory rights are not affected, but it you'd have to go back to the retailer with problems (at least in the UK)

When son you have to flash the boot.IMG for the ROMs using the computer. That means every time you want to flash a new ROM you have to use a computer also.

First of all,
Thanks a lot to everyone who have been answering my questions.
Okay so if I read and understand everything correctly it is still relatively simple to install custom roms but I need a computer everytime I install a new ROM and HTC can see there was a custom recovery and ROM installed. (and this will possibly void my warranty)
Is that the right way of summarizing this or is there more?
and.. do you guys think there will ever be a S-OFF option?
Thanks in advance:good:

Okay. thanks
I hope we might see a S-OFF for the one x in the near future then!
so to be clear, when I receive my phone tomorrow and want to install a custom ROM (for example android revolution)
I need to:
1. Root the phone
2. Install a custom recovery (like clockworkmod)
3. and then what?
because the description in the Android Revolution ROM topics states:
" You need:
HTC One X unlocked with htcdev.com (S-ON) or S-OFF <-- but I do not have to unlock it via htcdev to be able to install it?
ClockworkMod Recovery or 4EXT Touch Recovery (coming soon)
Firmware package from downloads section" <-- and does he mean by firmware package just ROM or?
sorry for all these questions but I am new to the One X and this other procedures
Thanks for the help and patience

You need htcdev unlock for permanent root.
Then you flash clockworkmod, take a backup and flash Rom and kernel (boot.img).

...or u take a look at THIS

Just so you know, once you unlock the bootloader there is no going back. You can relock it but it will show RELOCKED instead of LOCKED. So HTC will always know, and they can deny warranty claims if they chose to do so.

Don't root it today use it for a few days quite a few devices have had issues out of the box if test it first,
The warranty thing is all hearsay we have no fact I've heard several people get their phones fixed/replaced htc are legally obliged to stick to their warranty especially if it is a hardware fault. Not 100% sure on where we stand but htc can't just cancel our consumer rights

Okay guys just received my one x.. so some of you suggest to wait before unlocking, rooting and flashing? (Just to test hardware or wait for soff?)
So are there many 'problem' phones?

It's like this: There are statutory rights. In addition to that there is a warranty. HTC are perfectly within their right to cancel a warranty, but your statutory rights continue.
In the UK, in practice, your rights are with the retailer, unless you purchased it on credit, in which case they stand with the finance company (in theory, but as a matter of practicality, hit up the retailer first).
Oh, IANAL.

Like Kevin said.
Because HTC also updated the HBOOT the usual Unrevoked method won't work.
All you can do is wait for the day the developers find a new way in or around HTC's new security.

How likely do you think this is? Will the developers bother working on this? My brother was holding out on the root/custom ROM option hoping the 2.2 update would get rid of some of the lag... and is now disappointed that he can't root it because of the change.
hope they find a way. Really need OC. Little brother just got zte blade which is lot better and costs 100€ less than wildfire :/

I do not know, I am not a developer. However usually it takes a couple of weeks. Developers are proud people. If something made their hack not work anymore they will hack it back just to show how good programmers they really are

Hi guys,
I was good happy with my DK custom rom 2.2, then foolishly I tried one of the stock rom for HTC WF India, and then applied the OTA update, now stuck with unrooted WF 2.2. I suppose, if I take my WF back to HTC support, would they be able bring my WF back to 2.1, and then I would again root my device, since now my warranty is retained after flashing with the stock rom.
Any guesses on that.

Customer services were not born yesterday.
If they do decided to give you Éclair back then you can guarantee that it will be done with the new Hboot version on it and not with the old.
It's highly unlikely though.
They will know that the only reason you want the old O/S and Hboot back is so that you can hack it. Unless of course you can provide them with real solid evidence that for some reason your Wildfire really does need to run the old O/S and Hboot.
All you will get is you have to have the upgrade due to performance security etc etc.
And if they do decided to give you back the old Éclair O/S you can bet your left testicle it will have the new Hboot.
i updated my wildfire to 2.2 it doesnt lag it only runs smoother and faster specially the wifi

Most likely it will at some point in the future. If at all possible that is (insert scared shudder here).
The new devices rolling off the assembly line somewhere will all have the latest ROM and imho there are just too many useful things that require root.
If HTC, on the other hand, has succeeded in closing this ROM so tight that are no holes left to exploit I personally think that it will reflect negatively on their sales. Fat lot of good that will do us, I know.

if i pemanent root my device before i take a initial backup of my current factory rom i would not be able to restore it whenever i want to give my phone for service.
I will have to download one from a site. But i want to use again my own one.
You could just grab one of the ruus that are on shipped-roms.com that contains your current rom. It's a pity to have such a good device and not root it... You lose functionality.... Also you can't flash custom roms.... Our devs are by far better than htc's
Think that people even s-off and send their phone in for service (after returning it to perfect factory condition via ruu).

I am confused
What is ruu?
And s-off?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
RUU stands for ROM update utility. It's an upgrade pack from htc. It contains ROM, radio, bootloader and recovery(in other words all the software bits required for your phone to run) to "update" your phone. These are all factory ones that are released from htc to help users upgrade their phones to the latest official software. Their components are found also on the OTA updates. We use them after when we want to return the phone to factory default state after we have flashed custom versions of any of the above, in order to return for service. S-on/off indicates a security status set by HTC. S-on is the standard for retail phones and it means that the /system and /data are not writable when the phone is operating. In that case we use tools like adb to do so , through pc. S-off disables this security measure allowing further customization of the device. It is also said that root+s-off = ultimate root, because then the phone is fully accessible and customizable

The ruus on shipped-roms are the factory ones and are tested. There are many roms, because there are many updates, and because some of them are branded, which means that they are specifically designed for a specific carrier. Usually what you need is the latest WWE RUU. When rooted you can use some extra apps, and flash custom roms(and recoveries/radios too)

There are full tutorials in the desire development sub forum. The latest ruu is the one that came to you over the air and its froyo with standard sense. You don't need to install any ruu, as long as you don't want to send it in for service. If you want to try sense 3(its still im beta phase) you can try one of the custom roms found in the desire index thread(in the development subforum). You must first become familiar with these terms: adb, fastboot, ext, a2sd, a2sd+,data2sd/ext/whatever, hboot, root, s-off, alpharev, partition, recovery, wipe, backup, flash, dalvik cache,RUU, usb brick, rosie, apk, updater-script, update.zip, radio, ril, amend, edify, data++, amonRA, clockworkmod, AOSP, MIUI and others, but there are enough to bring you in the world of Android on Desire. Be patient and search for each and every one of these.... Everything has been explained on the forums and the tuts in great detail. Dont be afraid to use Google search, or the xda one

[Q] HTC Desire 2.3.3 Official Update Custom ROM?

Hi guys. Sorry if this is similar to another question in these Q&A sections but i've gone through so many threads that i'm sick to the bones and ready to blow.
I have the original HTC Desire S-LCD model (slightly slower people, please note it is NOT the S, Z or HD, you don't know how many times this happens) and i used the official update for 2.3.3 gingerbread from the HTC developer site. The thing is though, it's very buggy and the lack of space is annoying me. I managed to get S-Off and install Revolutionary recovery onto it.
(HBOOT version says 6.93.1002 (not sure why it has the 6 part) and it says "Bravo PVT3 Ship S-Off")
I tried using root programs but none of them worked on it. To flash another ROM do i have to root it or can i just flash from this stage? Also what ROM would you guys reccommend? I'm wanting one with the new sense 3.0 or even the HTC Desire S ROM with sense 2.1 and apps2sd. I'm constantly uninstalling and reinstalling apps co its always almost full.
Again, sorry if this is unneccessary spam that has been asked before but i'm tired, confused, sick and annoyed.
Thanks, Huzi.
And please for the love of god don't tell me to use the search bar. At least link me. Please?
You can get some cool ROMS here: http://www.cooldevs.com/ that include upto sense 3.5!
New ROM has be flashed from recovery. Always follow installation instructions when you flash a new rom. To find a good one, check the developers thread.
A good beginnersguide can be found here on XDA (Sticky in General section).
Swyped from ICS with Transparent XDA App
reboot into recovery (either through the bootloader, or by adb reboot recovery).
If you just get an exclamation mark in a triangle, you need to flash recovery. Look at my guide.
If you have a custom recovery, backup your rom (it's pretty self explanatory how), do a full format from mounts & storage (apart from your sd-card), then select flash zip from sd, and then choose a rom to flash. Don't ask which is best or what to recommend. It's all personal preference.
ROM's I frequent:
Cyanogenmod
MIUI XJ
I can recommend the noobs thread it tells you everything, I've used it many of times and you soon pick.up on stuff.

So what you're saying is that I don't need to root or create a goldcard or anything? As long as I have this custom recovery I can flash a new ROM?
Also another thing that worries me is the radio part of the ROM. That was the reason I had to send my phone back to HTC coz there was an error when it was at the ROM stage and wouldn't boot an OS after that.
Can I flash a new ROM without the radio or does that mean no calling etc?
And also does the radio have to be specific to my region and operator? (o2 uk)
(sorry about the long winded questions)

Yes, you don't need a goldcard to flash a new ROM. The radio doesn't affect the booting up of the OS, it just affects your network signal and anything else associated with the radio. The radio doesn't need to be flashed everytime you change ROM's. You can look here to see if you have the latest one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464
The radios are not region specific
Thanks a lot for clarifying that. I think I'm gonna get started with a sense 3.0 ROM.

And let me ask you something. Is it such a crime to ask for help and give help? I've read through every tutorial i needed and still ran into problems. A store worker doesn't ignore you when you need something just coz people have asked before. By signing up to XDA you are automatically willing to help others or even help yourself when problems arise.

But I am thinking about the warranty, I read that flashing the original RUU will revert the phone to the original state. I am from India, So I think I need the RUU with version 1.26.720.2
Please give me some suggestions!

What's the difference? I unlocked on htcdev.com
When you unlock through htcdev.com there were some drawbacks regarding warranty. But when you unlock using s-off you can easily bring your mobile to factory state for warranty.
Can some one post how exactly we can claim for warranty when we unlock through htcdev.com?
I can't avoid all the features which will work only with rooting. So finally I had unlocked my mobile through htcdev.com
I'd say wait 1 week before you do it, perhaps next week there is already a way to do it ^^. (That warranty is lost forever, so I wouldn't do it impulsively).
Offtopic : you really have a giant signature OP ;-)!
I still waiting for S-Off. As if now I don't need rooted device since i'm enjoying the stock apps and stock ROM. Once i'm tired then I may unlocked.
Im awaiting s-off just for warranty reasons
Mod or Die
I'm torn. I need root to make several things work in Norway....
I am new with htc.i came from Samsung. I am just saying in samsung when u wanted to go back in original mode u just used official roms and boom u were in warranty. Isnt that the same with htc? i just used htcdev method to remove some craps from 3 network but i am sure i could go back to warranty using an RUU.
And as i spoke for RUU is there any topic gathering all the RUU's? Where can i found them?
Normally flash straight away but had it 3 weeks and still resiited so far waiting for s off

Just search the topic until you find a functional link.
personally I want S-OFF via htc dev. If they are going to try and void the warranty because the software is being messed with anyway why not give me full access.
i unlocked my phone but i got insurance from my carrier, so should i break it my phone might by accident get a knock out of my hand and over the viaduct lol
but I'm a lucky one and got a flawless HOX so i have no need to return it
It would've been nice to migrate app data from my desire HD to my HOX using titanium, but I guess that won't be possible.

As much as i get tempted to go through htcdev i'm going to hang on, especially now i got a 1.28 update through Three UK. There are some seriously clever devs here so i'm sure sooner or later an S-OFF will come.

What app data do you want to migrate? I only brought my SMS and Bookmarks across with me, using SMS BackupPro and Bookmarks to SD. Don't game a lot, so that was never important...
I am waiting for S-Off. I am actually really happy how my phone works in stock form and sometimes custom ROMs can have one little bug or another, so you are constantly flashing, chasing that perfect and stable ROM.
I will likely want to install custom soon, so if there is no S-Off by mid-year, maybe I'll just go with HTCDev.
I'm wanting S-Off rather than using HTCdev as from following the S-Off Dev thread in here the changing of CID to none rather than the stock HTC CID could hinder going S-Off in the future even with a relock. I also don't feel the need to go Custom ROMing while unbranded handsets are getting things updated by HTC.
I'll wait for a couple of weeks post Kernel source release then make my mind up.
Really difficult coming from.my ENG S-Off Desire HD though.
