Netflix has released the app for the Evo and Nexus S but not for the Epic. Would anyone be able to port it over to the Epic?

The app itself appears to be working fine, it doesn't allow you stream movies/TV.

No, streaming and everything is working perfectly well on the evo. It just has not been released for the epic

From what I gather you need to edit the build.prop for it to work, well at least for the Captivate it does:

Yep. Just read this on AndroidPolice here..
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/05/12/good-news-everyone-trick-the-netflix-app-into-thinking-your-rooted-device-is-supported/
Anyone try it yet on the Epic? I don't use netflix, but once I can get it streaming on my phone, I might have to sign up.
See signature...
Just attempted. I get audio for afew secs ten it crashes back to que. Get longer audio in portrait, landscape is just a blurp... resolution/video problem?
Its soooooo close....
New app is cooler too. I use it to manage que anyways.

The referenced Android Police article involves a change to build.prop to make the phone report itself as an HTC G2. Considering that the Epic and Nexus S are both Galaxy S variants on Sprint with 4G, I am curious as to whether it would be preferable to use:
ro.product.model=Nexus S 4G
ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
just tried the Nexus S. get device not supported and app crashes on login.
edit: HTC Vision no longer gives me device not supported. but app still crashes on login.
also: swype refuses to swipe words with the build.prop change. can any one else confirm?
The very first release never crashed but since the first update it's never worked.
It might just be the rom though.

Thanks for that app. It works perfectly on my wife's evo. I wish we could have it.

I had copied build.prop to the SD card, edited in a terminal emulator using vi, used some command line magic to copy it to the system folder, then rebooted the phone. After starting the Netflix app, it notified me that this phone was unsupported, then force closed after a login attempt.
Interesting they made the app for the evo over the epic at the very least released both at the same time collectively aren't there more galxy s devices over the evo...
first modify /system/build.prop
replace the like values with the below
Code:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
**** ro.build.fingerprint=sprint/htc_supersonic/supersonic/supersonic:2.2/FRF91/252548:user/release-keys
only add this line and comment ou the other if you dont already have the apk
then reboot the phone and go to market and install netflix.
do NOT load it.
once installed open up adb shell and as root
Code:
cd /data/data/com.netflix.mediaclient/lib/
cp libnetflix_device1.so libnetflix_device1.so.bak
cp libnetflix_device2.so libnetflix_devicex.so
cp libnetflix_device2.so libnetflix_device1.so
you will now be able to sign into netflix, view whats available and manage your queue.
but cant watch movies, in most of the ec05 and eb13's that we have it gives an issues with being unable to enumerate OMX device drm.play
if you install stock odin EC05(just the raw stock flash with nothing done) it will say that it throws an java exception and will just freeze lock
if you flash ED12 it works perfectly out of the box(but ed12 has issues)
Still working on it.
PS the above build.prop edit works for the nook colour and viewsonic Gtab and a host of other CM7 based devices as well.
All of the above is completely unnecessary if all you want to do is open the app and view your queue. It will do that without modification.
not on the epic it wont.
itll tell you first that its not in the market
then itll tell you its not for this phone
then itll just exit out to homescreen once you login.

Is it possible to get the blockbuster app off of the droid x and install it on the evo? There are a whole lot of movies on there and i don't know if there is a way to play movies on the evo. Also i want to hook it up to my hdtv and watch movies on there.

now working on evo!!!
my friend said the market had the blockbuster app accidentally for a couple hours then they pulled it...saying it is not ready for other carriers yet...but he said it downloaded, installed and even worked!!!! (although, he said it force closes often and the quality doesn't seem that great) ...i am trying to get it from him, but it may take a while ...he is a noob trying to figure out how to get it and send it. any tips for him?? (we are going to try titanium backup)
I downloaded it yesterday and deleted it 10 minutes later.
All download links of the blockbuster app have been removed

i got it, it installed... and i activated (online though)...I EVEN RENTED A MOVIE!!! ok, but it wouldn't download so, no go. not many force closes...it said
" DOWNLOAD FAILED" ...No compatible profile available for download. My profile in the app is set at portable...but i must need some droidx permissions or something
Is there anyway to pull the permissions from the DroidX dump?? I have the original blockbuster app from that, along w/ the rest of the dump but have no clue where to look for the additional files that may be needed to install so it thinks i am on a droidx...if this is even possible.
Was able to get my Dinc to run the Netflix app with no issues. Pushed it over to my A101 and no dice. Anyone mess with this yet?
Here's a link to the APK in my dropbox.

You just need to open & edit /system/build.prop
I used Root Explore but any other root file editor should work.

I can confirm this working on A70S running Uruk 1.0 from internal memory. To help others, I used a terminal to gain root ($su), made a backup copy of the build.prop (#cp /system/build.prop /system/build.prop.bak), then copied the build.prop to / and changed the name to build.txt (#cp /system/build.prop /build.txt). Then I changed the permissions to make it writable (#chmod 666 /build.txt). Personally, I hate vi. So, I used astro file manager to open the build.txt file and edit it with the above changes. Then back in terminal copied the edited build.txt back to where it belongs (#cp /build.txt /system/build.prop) and restored the proper settings (#chmod 644 /system/build.prop) and then rebooted via holding down power and selecting reboot.
I only played with the streaming for a few minutes before work this morning. Seems decent. I am really looking forward to getting into it tonight. Thanks for the file changes!
UPDATE: I got a chance to compare the netflix app on my A70S compared to endgadget's walkthrough video on the Nexus S. The app runs, in my opinion, a little slow both loading the first time and in changing tabs or viewing information on a movie/show. But when I loaded my app while watching the Nexus S on the video load, they took about the same time. Same thing with everything else - very comparable times to switch between tabs or get information on a movie/show. As far as quality goes, I have not watched any video completely start to finish yet. But I have noticed some variance in quality. An episode from Season 2 of the Office looked a little pixelated but Austin Powers Goldmember looked nice. Both we very watchable though. The initial buffer took a few seconds longer than I would like but when skipping forward in the video, the video played rather quickly. Overall I am happy the app is out, and will use the crap out of it, but there is definitely some room for improvement.
Do we absolutely need root to edit the build.prop?
I know I can get the file to my PC to edit. I don't know if I need root to get it back...and I did the firmware update.

Supposedly we should be able to do screenshots now on Gingerbread without being rooted. Can someone lead me in the right direction? How do I do this or does someone know of an app that will work on with Gingerbread?

Thanks Everyone
I appreciate the replies. The no root screenshot app was the only one I could find as well but it looked like you had to hook it up to a PC every time.
I just wanted one that would take a screenshot, save it immediately in the gallery and then I would have the option to send it as a text
I had this functionality before upgrade to Froyo and then most apps said :"requires root access"
However - I did read somewhere that gingerbread allows this without root but there doesnt seem to be an app developed that doesnt need to be connected to a computer

If you don't want to do the fix. Buy the games online and e-mail Gameloft with the order number and they will send you the A500 apks. Usually the same day from my experience, however I imagine they are gonna be kinda busy with the 99 cent sale.
I've done this twice already when I bought games on my phone that weren't available for my tab. They have great customer service, unlike E.A. (eff them)
EDIT: Speaking of which here is the direct link they sent me to download Asphalt Adrenaline HD - http://dl.gameloft.com/cm/t0/0rz0eYrFw33/Asphalt6Adrenaline.apk
So if you purchased that game just download from the link above. It still checks the market to see if you bought, so no stealing.
I am trying to buy the games online but it won't let me; it asks for my phone info .
I am not rooted but really want some of the gameloft games. Is there any other way?
You'll have to root and do the build.prop change I posted a while back to find more games.

One thing about my device id mod is that it breaks the update function. It sends mixed signals to acer and acer responds with an invalid device type error (when looking at logcat) which is why I haven't posted this mod in the dev section. In order to use the update function you'd have to change the build.prop file back to origional.
The auto updater (and manual) will be completely broken until you restore the original build.prop.

It'll act like its checking for an update but its sending acer invalid data. You wont see the errors unless your looking through the logcat data. So it'll always show "Your device is up to date".

If you use the origional build.prop, the gameloft games wont run. They'll give an error "unsupported device" (it's dumb of gameloft to limit their games per device, but they do)...

Thats weird. Can you go to www.market.android.com on your tablet and go to the game you just purchased and it should list your compatible devices you can install it to. Do you see a500 on the list? If you dont you might not have done the mod correctly. If it does recheck the lines you edited in build prop. You mightve missed a character.

I agree 100%!
Ok, I purchased a few movies on Media Hub when I had my Epic. (The Godfather and Scarface..had to have them). They always worked fine on this phone. When I went to EL29, it showed Media Hub having a mandatory update. Well, the update installs an app called "Samsung Accounts" and it made my paid Media Hub movies show unpaid. I spent hours on the phone with Sprint, then tech support, then Samsung and couldn't even get a credit for movies. I restored my EL26 nandroid and...they work fine. I even froze market updater on EL29 and it didn't work. Hopefully others don't have this experience but if you do, please call and complain! I paid $10 a movie!

Only thing I can think of making a backup of MediaHub without the update, install the update, open the MediaHub apk, find the config or similar file, find a Version variable or something to the like of that, copy it and paste it somewhere. Then, revert to the pre-update MediaHub backup, open, find config, and paste the Version of the updated MediaHub there (along with any other version-defining variables. Then re-create the apk and try again.
Only thing I can think of, which is to try to trick it into thinking it's been updated. I'm an experienced programmer, but I'm now getting into Android Dev'ing, so I don't know the exact process for Android APK's.... yet!
Just a thought. Might not work since the updater might actually scan the contents of all files go see if they aren't the updated files which would force the update regardless of changing a few config values.
This is the reason I don't purchase any sort of media through my phone.
That, and nothing fills me with more dread that watching a 90 minute movie on a 4" screen with tinny sound. But that's just me... I realize others don't have such qualms.
No complaints on my Epic 4G Touch. This 4.5" AMOLED screen is the chit fool!
