How do you keep your screen smudge free? - Defy General

I have discovered that a soft piece of leather (Not the shiny side) or chamois leather gets rid of all those annoying oily smudgy marks on your screen with a few wipes. As long as it is a soft leather

scratched my uni after only 3 months of ownership :(

I was wiping the screen this morning and when I looked at the screen I noticed there were several tiny scratches. I think a tiny bit of grit was on the microfibre cloth I used. I decided to get the crystal clear protector bundle from boxware which incudes a two piece silicone cover for the uni as well. does anyone have any experience with this brand of screen protector? would this also stop the existing scratches from showing up? one is a rather nasty one which is about 1cm long and can be seen where the light refracts oddly. thanks in advance.
Bump:
i decided to take matters into my own hands. i use brasso to polish my ipod every few months when the scratches become too annoying. Now if brasso works with soft perspex, it should work with the polycarbonate layer that protects the touch sensitive screen. Before I begin with the details, the usual disclaimers apply; This is for your information only, if you attempt to carry out what is described, you do so at your own risk. I am in no way encouraging nor persuading anyone to do this. Now on to the good stuff.
IUnfortunately I have no pictures as I didn't really think much about it.
First make sure you have the following:
1) Brasso
2) microfiber cloth (buffing)
3) a wad of soft cotton cloth with small weave
4) Quite a bit of free time (90 minutes?)
Switching the unit off is no necessary, you just have to make sure that the touch screen is not active that's all. If possible, fold the wad of cotton once or twice, this helps you keep rubbing for longer periods without drying up. Hold it over the mouth of the bottle and tip the bottle once or twice, depending on how absorbant the cotton is. Do NOT saturate it. Start rubbing over the scratch with MILD pressure, back and forth along one axis; perpendicular to the scratch usually works best; do NOT use a circular motion. The reason for using a cloth with small weave is because I found the hardware that the bigger the weave is, the more prone one might be to create more scratches than he removes. The mild pressure used also helps with this, along with the fact that too much pressure may result in a cracked touch screen. You will inevitably get some brasso around the edges and on the plastic as well. Atleast on my O2 XDA Exec, this was not an issue, although I did take care to wipe up the excess on the plastic fairly quickly, every minute or so. Take care not to let the brasso cake up; this shouldn't happen with you're rubbing constantly and the gunk has no time to settle. If this happens DO NOT start rubbing over it again, even with a freshly soaked rag as the caked up brasso is just too abrasive and WILL cause scratches. In case this happens (and it will, if you go to the loo or to get a cup of tea), simply wipe it off gently using the microfiber cloth and pick up where you left off. I stopped maybe three times and wiped the screen completely clean to see how much progress I've made. A few points to remember are :
1) Use mild pressure
2) NEVER use a circular motion when rubbing
3) Clean off any excess gunk on the plastic as soon as you see it
The final result should be pretty good elimination of the scratches. I dunno how this would rate against other scratch removers, but with my ipod nothing worked better for the price, not even displex or applesauce.

How or what are you all using to clean the edges of the screen?

I've just removed my screen protector and phone cover and there's a bunch of crud around the edges of the screen. I'm afraid to slide anything under the frame for fear of damagning something. How are you all cleaning yours?
cotton buds
I use cotten buds and Razzle Dazzle spray used to clean your specs, glasses
does a great job
comes up like new
hope that helps
i just cleaned mine when i had it apart put a new screen protector on afterwards
I use the thin plastic toothpicks that have a 45 degree on one side. They're bendable and flex with slightest resistance. Great for cleaning between screen and case. There is a pretty big gap between the screen and faceplate so alot of debris can get trapped in there. As long as the spongy black insulation foam is in good shape I dont see putting anything in edges to be a harmful to it.

lens cover damage

The see-through (plastic?) lens cover appears to have a thin layer on it, a layer that comes off easily? i can remove it with my finger nail with repeated rubbing so it can't be an anti scratch layer
It's not really like scratches it looks more like it's just being rubbed off and the surface below looks not as shiny.
Do others have this or have had this?
Anyway on mine this layer is mostly off in the middle, bit of a pisser it probably effects the photo quality..
yes, this happened to me. I got a scratch on the lens cover and the "coating" started to rub off around the scratch then. Once it's broken it will all eventually chip or rub off. I was left with a dull not so transparent lens cover. crap photos.
I got a new back cover for 30euro! (argh!!). Now I do not rub my lens and am very careful. The initial scratch was caused by a tiny piece of salt or sand on the lens when I rubbed it clean with a microfibre cloth. Once it was scratched the protective film just flaked off really easy when I rubbed it even lightly.
Get a new back cover and be very careful when rubbing the lens cover in future. In fact DON'T rub it is best. If you do get a finger print on it very very lightly use a microfibre cloth to remove it. no hard rubbing.
bummer.. i'll just leave mine i think, maybe some one will bring out a better version, or i could maybe maybe stick a plane glass disc in.
yeah, it sucks doesn't it! I would not mind paying an extra 20euro for a desire if HTC would coat the lens cover with mineral glass or something so its much less likely to scuff. plastic with a coating is useless.
anyway, good luck if you replace it with a glass disc, that would be cool too. I splashed out for the battery cover, but it was expensive and wouldn't do it again if it happens.
Thats why I loved my Nokia N82. It had an actual lens cover that kept out dust, fingerprints, grit etc.
well, HTCs next big handset release will only be improved I imagine.
Same here
I've had the same problem, bad engineering on HTC's part in my opinion as the lens(cover) is a very much exposed part of this particular phone because of its 'bulgy' design. Never had this kind of problem on my Cybershotphones.
Too bad though as I'm otherwise very happy with my Desire (although it would have been nice if the screen were a bit less prone to scratching, gief Gorillaglass).
I ended up rubbing the lenscover until the entire coating was actually rubbed off in the hope pictures would be less blurry because of the partly chipped off coating.
Anyone know what the coating is for in the first place?
if this happens to mine I will drill the clear lens out

I think you can just bash it out - there's a post on the forum somewhere about it

amFilm Glass Protector experience (good!)

I just installed 3 amFilm Glass Protectors with black borders. Yes, I can vouch for this protector.
Pros:
- Truly edge to edge, with a tiny gap at the edges for case-friendliness
- Does not block any part of the OLED
- Clear, practically looks like a naked screen
- Smooth (wifey said: feels so smooth!)
- Fingerprint-resistant
- Black borders means no visible edges
Cons:
- Can't really think of any. I used Vivid NG gesture app and have to turn increase "Touch Sensitivity" on display settings. No biggie.
- Installation takes longer; more elbow grease to get the bubbles out.
Installation tips:
- Allow at least 15-30 minutes for a good result
- Don't follow the myth of hot shower! That's just a waste water. Seriously.
- Have a roll of masking tape. Use it to clean the screen and sides of phone. Do this by sticking the tape vertically top to bottom starting on the left edge, then peel and move slightly to the right. Repeat until all screen and sides have been 'stripped' of dust specks.
- After placing the protector on the phone, start looking for any remaining specks. Do this by gently squeeging around. Bubbles will move and can be taken care of later. Specks will stay, so you want to spot and remove them now.
- To remove a speck (most likely it would stick to the film and not the screen), fold a length of masking tape in two, so both sides are sticky, then gently lift the closest corner and slide the masking tape underneath. Careful, do not let the masking tape rub the sticky side of the glass film such that it would leave a mark. Once on the right spot, press the film down gently and re-lift it. The speck will stick to the masking tape. Slide out the masking tape and let the film drop down.
- Repeat until all specks have been removed.
- Now squeegee the bubbles out. This takes a while on this screen protector, but you'll be happy with the result!
Ps: I don't use the provided dust stickers. Masking tape works better for me.
Attached are some photos after the installation on the second phone.
Got one of these on the way, hope it installs ok and works nicely with otterbox case. Mine is a work phone and they stipulate the otterbox must stay on. I hate the thing but the S10e is a nice phone.
This supposedly case friendly screen protector had so much potential....
Feel and fit is fantastic but it does NOT classify as case friendly. I cannot get air out of it with my case on. Awesome otherwise.
The case presses on the edges and distorts it, causing some lift.
I had my screen protector installed at a phone shop and the case somehow lifted the top part abit. Couldnt get the airbubble out no matter what so i tried using a hairdryer .. 15 seconds later no more airbubble.
Took mine off. Work insists the otterbox is used so if a screen protector doesn't work with it, too bad. There's no way it was going to fit under the edges of the case.
With a normal TPU type case it should be good though.
It's good enough a fit to even have a naked phone.

How To Guide How to keep your case on the front of the phone

Alright, after months of trying to nail this problem down I finally have a good solution!
I've tried a few different cases on my fold3 and none of them really held well on the top screen when folded and in my pocket. It would start sliding off. So I finally have a solution. Get yourself some good double sided tape (I suggest some type of 3m tape This for example) and measure you a piece of tape that is length of the case that touches the phone that isn't on the screen. Then take a sharp knife and cut a very thin strip of tape. Put that strip on your case and then put the case on the phone. Press hard and hold it there for a bit and then BAM it's not going anywhere again. If it's done right it will not be noticable (see pics I've attached) unless you look closely it's really clean and nice looking to me.
In the pictures you can see the black strip of tape that came with the case that wasn't super useful but what useful was my piece of tape.
I have been lucky in that my cases have not had this issue, but I agree, if you need too, there is no shame in using tape to keep this thing protected.
Just use good quality stuff.
This is the stuff I have and I LOVE IT... https://smile.amazon.com/25Meter-Double-Adhesive-Display-Housing/dp/B071D5CKCX
Good solution, just easy.
Unfortunetly fold series and other folded devices need specially cover.
I have fold 2 1,5 year and few covers:
Ringke slim. Good cover but even pieces of double tape after take off i saw particles of dust and sand.
Next i bought Spigen armor pro. Great protection but a lot of bulky and even mount with force for good fit after few weeks and take off i saw few white dots on the frame from probably few particles sand.
It was little frustrating because I always to take care my devices and carry without any other stuff in my pocket.
4 days ago i told "stop" covers with use tape for hold on the device.
Without case fold is really beautifull and touch metal in every time is really pleasant .
I read topics on reddit about "caseless fold devices" and a lot of people have enjoy use folds without case.
After that I use my device only with original leather back cover, without front cover.
Admittedly 2 days ago drop my fold from pocket on the floor. It drop edge front frame but after that is only scratch and rest device survive well
I have béen using a dab of clear silicone sealant. Holds well, and comes off by rubbing it with a cloth.
After a few months of searching, I just gave up and use whichever is the slimmest case without an adhesive. It made more than a few scratches on the side of my screen and I just decided not to give a crap about it, it doesn't go over the main screen anyway.
