Desire Z or Nexus S - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys just wanted to know which phone is faster? Someone is offering me a trade and I am extremely tempted!
I am a bit frustrated with the desire z being a step behind the hd. Plus the NS has a higher resale value lol Plus there's already a working port for SENSE!
I am looking for speed especially when it comes to the browser, what do you guys think?

The Nexus S is nice and all.... but if you are looking for browser speed specifically, DON'T trade. Nexus S is not HSPA+ compatible. That's one of the complaints of an otherwise impressive phone.

[Q] Desire, upgrading from Hero, worth upgrading?

Hi All,
I'm from Malaysia, here we pretty much dont have contracts, thus we are free to buy our own unlocked mobiles, albeit at retail prices.
Anyway, i've been using the hero for a year now, and am thinking of upgrading. I have narrowed it down to either a Desire, Nexus One or Samsung I9000 Galaxy.
Both the Desire and Galaxy are officially available here, but the Nexus One isn't (i'd have to go for grey imports - thus warranty becomes a problem). Leaving the nexus out, im left with the desire and galaxy, both have almost the same price, but i've been browsing the galaxy forum and it seems there are lags (with lag fixes)? Hardware wise, the galaxy is more powerful (but is it that noticeable?), but what i want is a mobile with very active and broad range of rom development, the desire wins in this case over the galaxy.
Will it be worth it and wise to get a desire now, since the desire HD is going to be released soon? I for one find the HD's screen too big for me. What i want is a phone that i would be able to use for at least a year+, and one that has active rom development (which is why i choose the hero a year back).
I've been looking at the spec sheet and the HD has only certain advantages over the Desire, namely better GPU (adreno 205 vs 200 on the desire), fab process (45nm vs 65nm for the desire) which should translate to lower power consumption but the behemoth of a display on the HD would consume more power, a better camera (8mp vs 5mp - with such small sensors, whats the difference anyways?), and slightly extra ram. Oh, and of course the screen size difference.
That being said, i'd like to know from you desire owners is it worth upgrading to a desire from a hero now? And also, whats the battery life on the stock desire?
Maybe the Desire Z is better for you?
I've recently upgraded from Hero to Desire and i can assure you it definetely worth the money. IMO Hero's hardware is insufficient to support its software, making the phone lagging most of the times. Desire's 1ghz processor + extra RAM makes the phone work fluently - almost as an iphone. Also desire has a much better camera and a much better screen in matters of brightness and resolution. Body design is also better, phone is thinner and construction sturdier. The battery life isn't as good as on the Hero (lasts 3-4 days vs 1-2 days on the Desire).

Maybe i forgot to mention that i am not looking for a phone with physical qwerty keyboard. The reason behind this: It has a slider which has mechanical moving parts and is more prone to damage. I've had too many problems with flips/sliders right from the days of Motorola Startac, my last slider being a nokia n96, which flex cable gave away twice, so i kinda have a phobia towards anything but candybars .
I also want a 'best bang for buck' device, and both the desire/galaxy s are in that category. I could only imagine the retail price of the desire hd and z when they are launched here.

Have you tried any of the roms which undervolts the proc? To be honest, the price of an iphone 4 isnt that too far away, just slightly higher than the desire here, but then again, i just cant explain why, but i cant see myself using an iphone ever. i practically hate it..

I am not suggesting that the iphone is an overall better phone... it's just that motion and scrolling are better as it uses a dedicated GPU. If i was to buy a phone i would again go for the Desire. It also costs almost half the price of the iphone.

Nothing desperately wrong with the iPhone. I own both and they are both fantastic. Why dont you try the desire, galaxy s and desire HD in store and see which one you like best?

Hi mate, well i didn't have a hero so i can't help you out, but i had a sony xperia x10 instead and i can safely tell you the Desire is worth every penny more. Once you calibrate the battery the desire is really awesome!

[Q] Should i swap it?

Is swapping a htc desire for a galaxy S worth it? i did some research and all i found was desire is better but is it really? please help me should i change it to a galaxy S?
Don't do this mistake I had a galaxy and really I hate my self because of it !

Sgs is soo laggy and GPS doesn't work. Keep your desire I wouldn't trade my x10 with sgs and desire is out of question.

As an owner of both a captivate and an epic 4g, I can tell you that the sgs line is a bit laggy. BUT that's exactly what the xda community is for! I did a lag fix on the captivate and it effing FLIES! I kid you not. The sgs phones are not without problems but most are fixable. I'm loving mine. I'm sure you will too.

A friend has a sgs, and really don't rate it compared to the desire.
It doesn't 'feel' nice to hold, and proves harder to operate with 1 hand, not a problem for some but it helps.
The larger screen doesn't appear as crisp playing the same avi, not sure if it was the way the colours were set or not, but def had some blurring on faster parts of the avi.
The browser seems slower as well on sgs, seems to hang for quite a while before loading up pages, even something like Google seemed to take longer.
Sgs does have swype otb, which is nice, but imo just falls short on so many areas anyone would be stupid to get the sgs instead of the desire.
Listen up dude - the GPS really doesn't work in a usable, driving around fashion. If you don't use the GPS then you might like it. If you do then forget it.
so you guys sure that i should stick! to the desire? and the software updates cant fix the galaxy s?
My little story might help you. 5 weeks ago I got a Samsung Galaxy S, lagged like anything(Although their are many hacks on SGS board for fixing this) and had terrible GPS reception. The piece itself had the 3 buttons download mode disabled, I got a replacement and same problems. So I returned it and instead got a Desire(Although I did SLCD brick it but that was my stupidity).
SGS is a very good phone though, has true multi-touch and much better GPU. The screen is bigger and very nice.
Pros of Desire when compared to SGS is that Desire has a lot more sturdy feeling, LED Flash(Which I don't care about but it makes a nice torch), HTC Sense(Seriously, Samsung's touchwiz is kinda crap), a much bigger ROM community(Atleast when I last checked, Desire is more hacked and slashed and has a lot of options). Has official as well as a lot of spin-offs/AOSP Froyo(SGS has a few leaked ones but nothing else).
There's one thing that makes the sgs a no go phone: samsung!
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
As I own both devices, I think I may have something to add here. Both devices have their pros and cons. The Galaxy S does have a larger and slightly better screen. It looks great. Without the lagfix, its terrible to use though. Even after the lagfix, there are points where the Desire does still feel faster. As some have said, the Desire also feels more substantial in hand. I have found that the battery life on the Galaxy S, even after the lagfix, is better then the battery life on the Desire...by a good bit too. No camera flash on the Galaxy, which sucks... becayse I find myself using it often. Over all, the Galaxy S IS a better device spec wise. The software portion goes to the Desire though. They are pretty much on the same level, so it wouldn't really be worth it to move from one device to the other.

I still feel like HTC Desire is the fastest phone on the market till today.

So here's the deal. I have my Desire for a long time. I got successfully cured from ORD But I still do touch it quite a lot
So my desire:
8gig class 4 sd card(I really need a bigger one, plus it's slow)
1ghz, sometimes undervolted, rarely overclocked
GPU+ drivers(I always check that the rom and kernel have them)
Oxygen HBOOT table
PlayerPro(used to have PowerAMP, until the trial expired )
Redux rom
AMOLED version(of course)
And out of my phobia that I still have a good phone I just _need_ to compare it to others. So here's a list, sorted by date... how I remember it:
Nokia N8 - nothing to say. But it performed surprisingly better then the 3GS in some parts
LG Optimus 2X Stock - Won, won everywhere but tegra games
SE x10 1.6 lazy fatass didn't update... and uses MY, MY gmail account! SO lazy! - I won so badly good, so, badly, good. Even though I thought 1.6 would beat me because it's well, 1.6, but I won, won good =)
Dell Streak 2.2 edited - oh man was that close! But in the end my skilled hands won again Plus he had that stupid ADW.Launcher(seriously guys, now I'll be rude, it's f***ing slow, just admit already, even the Regina 3D, 3D launcher is faster and actually battery saving!)
HTC Desire HD Stock - won, won, won, won, won
HTC HD7 Stock - surprisingly shocking fast! It surely beats the LG which was surprisingly... awfully slow, BUT it failed everywhere else (I expected that)
iPhone 4 Latest version no JB - I've compared with the guy a million times. I win everywhere everytime. Loser
Samsung Galaxy S Older stock - Won everywhere
iPhone 3GS that time newest OS+JB - won absolutely everywhere with a huuuge lead
Testing methodics:
No synthetic benchmarks
Just responsiveness and overall speed of OS
Few apps
Some veery intensive sites
And anything that comes in our minds the time
Discuss.
EXTRA NOTE
I've tried out other phones in the shop of course. But stock and presentation thingies? I mean I won, like always, but stock plus presentational? No really can't compare. But I won for all HTC including WP7 devices. Though would like to see galaxy s II and htc sensation.
bumpi bump bumpingo
I wanna smoke what you smoke.
This is pretty funny, I must admit LOL
Honestly, with the right tweaking it way seem like your phone is the fastest there is, but in real life, if you tweak evidently better phones, they will fly WAY faster than yours.
The problem is that you're comparing optimized stock against weighed down manufacturer UIs.

Let's make it +4... Hands down!
Yep, development is actually a good (biggest imo) point in keeping this phone. I won't feel like it's old until my favorite devs will move to something else
I love my Desire. I love it so badly I can't quite explain it. Since the beginning the only complaints I have had is I think it's a pitty not to have a 4 inch screen (that would make this thing 99% perfect in my opinion) and also no decent video player with features like screen lock to avoid acidental pressing etc...
All in all it's a wonderful device. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's better than the iPhone 4. I'll addmit it's a great device and software and ROMs keep it fresh, but the overalll responsiveness of the Desire vs the iPhone 4.... I'd have to tip my hat to Apple, albeit by just "that" much.
I read the term GPU+ on this thread for the first time today. Would anyone elaborate on what it is and why it's better?
Also I guess Redux has this GPU+ in it. Can anyone tell me if MIUI also has this or any way to implement it into the already working ROM?
Well comparing the Desire to an iPhone is just unfair...that device has better hardware, hands down...if you wanna be fair you have to compare it to a SGS (which has the exact same cpu/gpu). Anyway, personally i'd still pick the Desire right now, if i had to choose between that and the iPhone, the main reason being that i couldn't live without the freedom that android grants me now...i'd only move to a better android phone, nothing else.
Come on guys, seriously, why would you have an iPhone? Isn't a wife more than enough?

Lol @ wife comment. No, seriously, I wouldn't say no to an iPhone, but given the choice I'd go with Android. Apple just gives you that "just works" kind of feeling that I love. But my Desire also gives me a "98% just works" feeling plus the liberty to do what I damn well please with my expensive hardware and software. Also I found it shoking someone saying that the Optimus 2x is slower than our Desires. I had one in my hands for over an hour and I swear to God that thing is fast, fast, fast! Can't wait to see what 2012 holds for us. I plan on trading my Desire in 2012.
Optimus x2 is faster for sure, anyway looks like (at least that's what i heard) many of the current apps aren't really optimized for new dualcores: most of the time only a single core is used, unless the app is very demanding, so at least for now it's hard to feel that huge boost in everyday use...i guess it's like it used to be with some older games on the first dualcore pcs, where you had to force the program to use more cores via driver, because it was made with singlecore architecture in mind...but obviously it's just a matter of time before we get our butts kicked way harder by new gen phones
Desire is the best
The desire is the best thing I ever bought. the modding and tweaking is just great, thanks to all the great devs out there

Making a decision acer iconia a100 vs lenovo k1

Hey guys, so what do you think, which it the two is a better device?
Specs are almost similar with acer being 7" vs lenovo 10". Same processor, gpu and other hardware.
Better io options on acer iconia specially the USB and nini USB.
Screen better on Lenovo.
I am still confused on the scalibility, developer support and future proof ics on the chosen device.
Thanks!

Anyone? Need to order one today..

Acer Iconia has ICS now through the leak, not sure about if the Lenova one has it. I am pretty happy with my A100, it does anything I need. It really depends on you and what you want a 7inch or a 10inch?
Thanks for the suggestions.
I looked and seems like both have their bootloaders locked, hence not very active for the custom rom developers.
Both are rootable, so it seemed like on the forums.
Acer a100 was launched early last year and hence should be a lower priority for acer, since a200 has also been launched. Although official ICS is expected by april and leaked already available.
Lenovo K1 also officially releasing ICS around the same time, but a fairly neew release by Lenovo so I guess, the support life should be better. Plus very recently, around mid Feb, Lenovo released the source code for their devices which to me sounds like they are looking at a developer friendly model for their devices. I don't know if that would make the bootloader unlocked for full developer support and developer interest, so only time will tell.
For similar prices (a100 costing 20 cheaper) but 8gb vs a 32gb k1, opted for a k1. Costing 335 canadian dollars with the taxes.
Hope the decision is right, will only know once I start using the device.
Thanks!

I am sure, which one do you generally prefer to pick up?
Sent from my HTC Vision
I had both as well. Returned the K1 cause it was just too big and heavy for me to hold longer than an hour specially when I played games. I cant imagine how much bigger it will be with a case. Also at the time there was no quick easy root and not a lot of development for it. I did like surfing on it though due to bigger screen and loved the side button where you swipe down to go back a page. I didnt have to move my hands to hit the back button on the bottom in the notification bar.
If you want portability get the acer a100. I like that Im able to bring my a100 with me anywhere and when I take it out in public I dont feel as geeky as holding a 10 incher. Gaming on 7 inch is better also for me. There's also a mod if you have a 32gb sdcard to swap internal with external SD so basically your 32gb will be your main memory.
But if its for mainly home use and you do a lot of surfing then IMO the 10 inch is better. Battery will last longer too. If you cant decide though maybe have both =). I do...well not a K1 but I have a Transformer Prime I use when I'm at home.
Well the screen is much better on the k1 just plain impressive but its not easy carrying it around ,the a100 is much more portable and easy to hold with one hand , soon the Acer will be in my dash in the car . The Acer high note is its value x performance and specs on a 7inch , I have seen one on kijiji go for 175 ....me I was happy to get one for 220 ....there both good in there own way like I said

7 inches is the way to go. With a 10" tablet you would probably have to carry a bag to even have it on you. The A100 fits right in my jacket pocket (and even in one of my jeans) so I can have it on me at all times.
I usually have a wifi hotspot on my phone set up so wherever I am the tablet is connected. Feels great.

I hear you there totally, and what i was almost sold on to. But then I decided there wasn't much point in the phone I carry vs the tabs size being close in dimensions.
The tab should give me a good screen and screen size, besides the power.

Should I get the One X?

I'm coming from the Desire HD and I can sell my Desire HD and buy the One X for just 360 euros.

360 euros sounds like a good deal. If you don't like it you can always sell it =)
My previous phone was a Desire HD, too.
Now I got my grey HTC One X, and I love it.
I thought my DHD was fast and the screen was pretty good, but after I used the One X for a while the DHD feels 'slow' and the screen looks so ugly.
It was my intention to keep my Desire HD for a long time, but I noticed a very good offer, so I bought the One X straight away. I have absolutely no regrets.
So if you can buy a One X for just €360, I would say get it immediately!

Don't event think about it. I was DhD user also and right now, after 3 days pass from buying 1x, I should say: "it worth any cent"
Also if you think that size is bigger than DhD, it's not. It's almost the same and I'm not get any discomfort when I've take it in my hand.
Most impressive was: "wow, what a screen, it looks like image above glass"
Very pleased with my new phone

Hello, I used to have a DHD, then went to GS2, iPhone 4s, sold it and bought a sensation, then a galaxy note, then a galaxy nexus (I eBay a lot). I then sold it and bought a one X. The HTC One X is by far the best phone of them all. It's has a large screen, but feels a lot smaller in the hand than the nexus, I have also had no hardware faults. The phone is in my opinion perfect. Excellent screen, it is super clear (comparable to apple's retina screens, I have the new iPad and wifey has iPhone 4, so have done a direct side by side comparison), super quick, I mean no lag at all, very slim, I'm a heavy user, and still get a full days usage. I have an unlimited data plan, so am permanently surfing and downloading.
Debated waiting for the GS3, but after seeing it (dont like the design) I am so glad I got the one X. All.I can say is that if you are debating buying one, debate no longer, go buy one, you will not look back.
Was not a fan of sense on the DHD, but sense 4.0 is excellent, much superior, in my opinion to the stock ICS on the nexus.

I would say get it if you like the sense overlay then this is the best there is.
I am also thinking of getting the one x but somehow I think the one xl will in practice be much faster and energy efficient.
What do you guys think? I still have an sgs2 so no real need to upgrade but I love sense and really want a phone which can display full web pages without needing to zoom in. I just bought the one s for my gf, it seems to fly, it's so fast and smooth. How's the x, I have heard it has lags....
I really want to put my Desire to rest but am afraid of screen problems with One X.

The best thing to do is:
1. If possible buy the phone from a shop
2. Ask them about their return policy on faulty units. So you can return a faulty unit and they can replace it with a new one.
I'm getting my One X Tuesday, but if I have 1 single problem with the screen or hardware, I am going to return it and ask my money back.
It's expensive so I'm not going to switch it. I'll get my money back and I'll keep my DHD.

I'm coming from the Desire HD and I can sell my Desire HD and buy the One X for just 360 euros.
Anyway what do you guys think, should I get the One X. Was it worth it getting for you guys?
And whats that I heard that the OX doesnt have s off. What can people do with s off.
Will the OX get s off soon or is that out of the question?
