this site is ripping xda content - About xda-developers.com

during a google search i found this site ripping posts from xda for a mfa site.
hxxp://www.android-support.com/invalid-magic-code-0x0000003-while-trying-to-write-system-img
it was up within about 20-30 mins of me posting, so it has to be hitting your feeds fairly regularly!
time to start banning ips that access your feeds?

I think this is a cat and mouse game! If they ban an ip, they'll just find another way of doing it.......I don't think XDA is that worried about it because if they were, they would of stopped it by now!
Just my 2 cents.....don't eat my head off...hahahaha

this is kinda true in some respects, but the guy is using wordpress, with someone elses theme and so is probably just using a wp plugin to pull the android forum feed.

personally, i'd check logs for ip's that pull the android forum general feed regularly through the week at set times, maybe even try some test posts at various times to narrow the ip's down that hit at regular times.
then it's time for that ip to meet iptables
look for any agent strings - it may even be shown as 'wordpress' or as curl, or wget or a wordpress plugin name. i'm willing to guess there's a few wordpress occurances in your logs. report to google as well.

np. but... there's always the 'thanks' button

We're looking into this.

if you want to be a hardass, you may want to limit to certain agent strings for legal pulls like apps - of course, this can (fairly easily) be bypassed, but for the average webmaster dolt, it's enough.

You can either, create a referrals URL, so that you give this to your friends, and they join via the URL and you get a referral.
Or
When registering (I'm told) there is a field to enter the name of an existing member who referred you to this site.
Dave
I've wondered about that too.
Thanks for clearing it up.

You'd be surprised I tend to be less helpful when I try to be, so maybe I should just flame my way to the big 1000
PS: If you're not too busy, can you mention to the powers that be the idea of having your phone, ROM and radio in your username bar (the thing to the left of each post - don't know what it's called...). It was mentioned in this thread as it went a little off topic in the second page, but it seems to have fizzled out a bit.
I think it would be a very useful idea as a lot of support threads ask for such information and quite a lot of users would rather not keep it in their signatures. It also standardises the layout of such things so you can quickly check which phone/ROM/whatever the user is talking about.
I suppose the issues would arise when someone has more than two or three phones as it would make the posts longer, but even then it wouldn't get so bad until it hit around five devices, as it's just two or three lines for each one. Maybe a drop-down box could be used for the device and we could recommend only including primary devices in that, while keeping older ones for your signature only.

I could have sworn that at one point I'd been able to see who my referred sign-ups were, but I can't for the life of me find it now.
I've got 24, and although that's not a lot I'm a bit stumped as to how!
Is there a way to see who has signed up due to my referrals?

Poo. Ah well, cheers mate
Old thread, but wanted to post the method for creating a referrals URL since Dave's link above did not work..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/register.php?referrerid=4238197 <- replace this number with your user ID number
To find your user ID number, click on your user name in the upper right hand corner and see the new URL change in your location bar. Here is mine. Note the u= on the end.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4238197
Referrals doesn't seem to do anything, but it is nice to know that I inspired someone to join up and hopefully contribute.

Marketplace

I don't get it.
If I use the Android XDA app, the Marketplace is visible in General. Using a real browser however, it's not. A quick search for a link into the Marketplace rears a permissions error. And all of this without being registered. So what gives? Something I'm missing here?

It's not the app...we've changed the permission on the Marketplace to not allow access to a user until he/she has made 8 posts. That 8 post level is also the same point at which you can post links. It's just an anti-spam measure. We found people were registering at XDA just to spam the site or the Marketplace. This helps.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
This is good to know. Long time lurker and finally signed up so I could post in the marketplace but alas!
Can someone link to the rules for gaining access to the Marketplace? I have 8 posts but still cannot see it. Tried logging out and back in but still nothing
For a while there I thought I needed to check my eye sight. Makes sense now.
Hard to achieve 8 post if you have nothing to say or to discuss or if everything is so well explained that you do not need answers
Maybe you could add a waiting time also. Lets say after 4 weeks you get to see the market, I highly doubt anyone would wait 4 weeks just to spam something.
It doesn't make sense that you can view the Marketplace before you sign up (and then have it dissapear after you are a member).
oh!! so thats why i couldnt c the marketplace
I am new here. it seem that this is an useful forum.
welcome to forums
Once you become an active/regula user all XDA features will be unlocked and you will be able to post in marketplace, this rule is to protect us from spammers/scammers

Search no longer working?

Hi,
yesterday I wanted to list all my posts. I went to the tab called statistics and hit the link "display all posts" but I got an error that search is down for 5 minutes and that I should retry in 10 minutes.
I did, but same error.
Trying today, I still get this error - any ideas?
We put in place a limit on the number of searches that can be performed within a given period. We were finding that some users were exploiting the search, causing site slowness. So, we had to do something about it =D.
yes but it says try again in 10min and you wait 10min and then it still doesn't let you search is the issue.

Replied to your other post. Basically in 10 min, you may or may not be able to use it, depending on how many people are actually using the feature at the time.

Sorry svetius, but this is bad. Problem is, finding something is a two step process:
1. Find the correct thread (at leat one or more search to nail it).
2. Find the related post within the thread (again, more searchs).
We have lots of threads with hundreds, some with thousands of pages, it is impossible to NOT use search here, lots of them.
When i close some irrelevant threads im used to say " Use Search"...now what i will say to them?

Instead of doing this kind of thing, start from things that will not hurt our regular users, like disallowing guest access. Right now, there are more guests than registered users browsing the forum, creating an unnecessary burden on the system.

Then this should be explained in the message you get when trying to search then if this is in fact the case.
Now to be honest i understand needing to help speed up the site but this seems a little extreme and is going to cause the site to have more and more already redundant posts form people asking questions about things they could of found out by simply searching because they couldn't. resorting to having to search via google isn't the answer in the end, if thats the case search should just be disabled to begin with.
I do agree with disallowing non members the ability to search in hopes that us registered members can then be freed up to use it more freely.
Feed the beast...Hardware...more Hardware...
Oh and a good DBA that can tune the search engine would also be of help.
Love the site, except I can't search for anything.

Yes, Jesus Christ this is annoying. How was I ever exploiting the search? Search is the best and fastest way to find the threads I seek. This is nonsense.
Sorry, everyone. We're looking into the cause of this. It's possible that our server admin had to turn off search for several hours to do maintenance. It must have been unexpected, because usually he encourages us to announce the down time before it happens when it's going to be more than a few minutes.
its still working fine
keşke ingilizcem olsaydı sana yarım etmeyi çok istedim

Easy way to foster searching!!!

- New user comes on here and does a search, but gets no results or not what they're looking for.
- They do another search.
- "Sorry. You must wait 25 seconds."
What do you think will happen?
They go and create yet another redundant pointless thread.
Reducing this time limit by at least 15 seconds would go a LONG ways to helping people search more. I know personally I always get extremely frustrated when I search for something and then have to wait. If we want people to search more, why make it so frustrating?
Welcome to the ADHD generation. Is it hard for people to search using Google with an XDA modifier or doesn't it occur to people to try?

Correct. Most people have no idea what that is.
Is it even possible to look through all of the returned search results in 25 seconds? You'd have to be a record breaking speed reader
I suppose if someone enters the search term with a typo and then tries again it might be within the 25 second window.
Regularly when I make a search I click on the wrong option (display thread/post or else) and I'm stuck with that 30 seconds limit and this is really annoying. What's the reason for this limit? Avoid overwhelming servers?

With all due respect to seasoned members and searchers, really, it isn't that simple to someone who is new to all of this and seeking knowledge. I really don't understand why there's any time limit on searching whatsoever, that seems very counter-intuitive - and it will absolutely result in needless first posts, as Paul220000 pointed out, especially when you've got an issue on your hands you just don't understand how to fix.

Of course. But 30 seconds is just too long. It results in a lot of useless threads.
Another thing that would help tremendously is to default the search to the "Search this forum" link. I.E. whatever forum you're in, clicking search will default the "Search in Forum(s)" box to the forum or device you're in, since usually you're looking for device specific information anyway.
Compare these two links to see what I mean:
General search: http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php
"Search this forum": http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?f=556
Notice the second link searches only the Nexus One forums.
For a new person looking for info, it would probably be more beneficial to search for device-specific information rather than the default of searching all 700+ forums.
If the resource drain on xda is really that big a deal on searches, maybe adding that Google Search bar that searches with the xda modifier that a lot of other sites and blogs use would be a workable solution.
Yep but would it still allow to search only in specific forums and threads and not in the whole site?
i went to search something yesterday and it took me over 30seconds to find the search box... frustration had already begun to creep on me... finally i located the 'search this forum' button... using it was easy enough... i typed into the box the words 'recalibrate battery'... i then carefully proofread my search criteria before putting it through, which took about 30seconds by the way... at this point i was getting excited... then it returned just about every thread those words were mentioned in.... more frustration...
i agree the search may or may not be confusing to some people, be too slow, have wait periods, or give you the entire forum just in a different order... but it's not XDA's fault... go to any forum that uses vbulletin and you will have the same issues...

We are planning on improving the google search for the site.
As others have said at the moment the google search only works on a Site basis, we're looking into getting it on a per-forum basis.

This can be caused by extensions or settings requesting pages in the background. This feature is called "prefetching" and requests links before you actually click on them. It's fast for user experience but hammers the server. You shouldn't be hitting the 429 rate limit unless there are a lot of requests coming to the server.
Me too, I only go to the forum a few times a day and get this error every time?
It's getting that way, it's not worth the effort.
Doesn't seem to be any fix for the issue, or, am I missing some thing?

Disable prefetching in your browser, this "feature" causes the browser to load a bunch of pages in the background. On a busy site like XDA we rate limit pages to prevent abuse, imagine if everyone loading a page actually loads 20 pages in the background.
Tried the 3 main browsers on my personal Windows 10 laptop, connected to my S9 hotspot. The problem happens on all 3 browsers when I try to download 1 file (CyanogenMod for Note 4 https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=19462)
Tried my work laptop on my work's network connection, same error in both FFox & IE11 on Windows Server 2012.
Tried on 2 different T-Mobiles phones in the Chrome broswer - same error.
Seems like the "429 rate limit" is crap on XDA. I haven't been on this website in years - kinda sad to see such a silly configuration problem causing so much grief for users.
Anyone know a different source for the 2nd newest unofficial CM for the Verizon Note 4 (the latest release fails to boot - stuck on CM logo)? I really really want/need it. Thanks!
