Marketplace - About xda-developers.com

I don't get it.
If I use the Android XDA app, the Marketplace is visible in General. Using a real browser however, it's not. A quick search for a link into the Marketplace rears a permissions error. And all of this without being registered. So what gives? Something I'm missing here?

Oh, so it's now visible. After glancing through the rules/disclaimer it appears it'll become accessible after 8 posts for a noobjuice member. Clever.

You need more posts and/or a longer membership (I can't recall the details).
Guess the Tapatalk app needs fixing .

It's not the app...we've changed the permission on the Marketplace to not allow access to a user until he/she has made 8 posts. That 8 post level is also the same point at which you can post links. It's just an anti-spam measure. We found people were registering at XDA just to spam the site or the Marketplace. This helps.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

This is good to know. Long time lurker and finally signed up so I could post in the marketplace but alas!

Can someone link to the rules for gaining access to the Marketplace? I have 8 posts but still cannot see it. Tried logging out and back in but still nothing

For a while there I thought I needed to check my eye sight. Makes sense now.

Hard to achieve 8 post if you have nothing to say or to discuss or if everything is so well explained that you do not need answers
Maybe you could add a waiting time also. Lets say after 4 weeks you get to see the market, I highly doubt anyone would wait 4 weeks just to spam something.

It doesn't make sense that you can view the Marketplace before you sign up (and then have it dissapear after you are a member).

oh!! so thats why i couldnt c the marketplace

I am new here. it seem that this is an useful forum.

welcome to forums
Once you become an active/regula user all XDA features will be unlocked and you will be able to post in marketplace, this rule is to protect us from spammers/scammers

Ah I was wondering why I wasn't able to see that deal I saw anymore... guess I'm off to ask more questions.

I have been on the site reading for 6 months now trying not to poste but now i need to use the market so here is my 8th poste thanks.

Lol. Non-members can't see the marketplace anymore.
Trust me to say too much

As I said before:
Once you become regular/active members will see the benefit of having this
Meantime post and you´ll finally get access

Nice
Really smart security measure! I like it.

Search no longer working?

Hi,
yesterday I wanted to list all my posts. I went to the tab called statistics and hit the link "display all posts" but I got an error that search is down for 5 minutes and that I should retry in 10 minutes.
I did, but same error.
Trying today, I still get this error - any ideas?
We put in place a limit on the number of searches that can be performed within a given period. We were finding that some users were exploiting the search, causing site slowness. So, we had to do something about it =D.
yes but it says try again in 10min and you wait 10min and then it still doesn't let you search is the issue.

Replied to your other post. Basically in 10 min, you may or may not be able to use it, depending on how many people are actually using the feature at the time.

Sorry svetius, but this is bad. Problem is, finding something is a two step process:
1. Find the correct thread (at leat one or more search to nail it).
2. Find the related post within the thread (again, more searchs).
We have lots of threads with hundreds, some with thousands of pages, it is impossible to NOT use search here, lots of them.
When i close some irrelevant threads im used to say " Use Search"...now what i will say to them?

Use Google?
Instead of doing this kind of thing, start from things that will not hurt our regular users, like disallowing guest access. Right now, there are more guests than registered users browsing the forum, creating an unnecessary burden on the system.

Then this should be explained in the message you get when trying to search then if this is in fact the case.
Now to be honest i understand needing to help speed up the site but this seems a little extreme and is going to cause the site to have more and more already redundant posts form people asking questions about things they could of found out by simply searching because they couldn't. resorting to having to search via google isn't the answer in the end, if thats the case search should just be disabled to begin with.
I do agree with disallowing non members the ability to search in hopes that us registered members can then be freed up to use it more freely.
Feed the beast...Hardware...more Hardware...
Oh and a good DBA that can tune the search engine would also be of help.
Love the site, except I can't search for anything.

Yes, Jesus Christ this is annoying. How was I ever exploiting the search? Search is the best and fastest way to find the threads I seek. This is nonsense.
Sorry, everyone. We're looking into the cause of this. It's possible that our server admin had to turn off search for several hours to do maintenance. It must have been unexpected, because usually he encourages us to announce the down time before it happens when it's going to be more than a few minutes.
its still working fine

Something should be done about it, because it's getting out of hand.
1) It makes quoting posts frustrating. It actually punishes us, because we need to manually remove the crap, which is ironically MUCH more difficult on mobile webbrowsers, than PC.
2) It makes posts more difficult to read. Most of them add a few blank lines and itself, making less fit on a screen without scrolling
3) It's totally unnecessary.
4) It is spam by the apps themselves.
5) Users who need an XDA app, can just type "XDA" into their app stores. So it can't even be argued that it is difficult to find such apps otherwise.
My Proposal:
1) Automatically filter the comment out of posts. They are lame, and unneccessary. Get rid of them automatically (simple string substitution).
2) Give a 3 month warning that users utilising clients which post such garbage, will be given 3 warnings, and will be temp banned if they use them. It is fair.
3) Start a shame list of poorly designed XDA clients.
I agree it isn't the end of the world, but its a lot of wasted productivity, and it's unnecessary. It's bad enough that I have noticed that some people here have massively long/intrusive signatures. Some of those people also have these annoying tags, so they have 3x more "crap", than they do actual post.
I agree with this, but it's up to the admins, will flag this to them.

It's been flagged!
The thing with the signature is that it serves the same purpose as the default signature of your mobile phone in the email client (for example: "Sent from my Verizon Droid X"). It helps to inform people that your message was written while mobile, and so the text might contain errors, or might not be as well thought out as it would have been if you were in front of your computer. The signature is activated by default on our Android apps (and, actually our Windows Phone 7 app).
That said, if there is huge support for turning off the default signature in the application, we'll do it, but this is the first time we're hearing about it being a problem. As mentioned, it serves a practical purpose.
Thanks for the feedback.

I can respect that, but surely, there must be better means of doing so, or at least filter them when using Quoting capabilities.. I recall seeing people get in trouble because they included the comments in their quotes (but I might be imagining it)

Huh? I agree it's useful ... more so than not, at least, as an identifier and a screaming 'hello I'm on my mobile so if this doesn't make sense you know why' kinda thing. I don't see how this is a big deal ... at all. LOL ... ? I also fail to see how it gets in the way of anything, like quoting especially, as it is essentially another single line that still precedes the quote tags.

It's useful IMHO and I am not aware of any issues in including the signature in quotes- it's a single line... who cares? I imagine someone quoted an entire, incredibly long OP, to say "thanks"...
I don't know if it is possible, but how about making the signature from the tapatalk app's just smaller than average text? That way, people can still be informed it was written while mobile, and it would be less obtrusive for the ones who don't like it.... And I'm sorry, I know my normal signature is long

You have to post one way or another - we don't need to know how or what you used to post. It is getting easier to post so more people are posting. Teens are no longer getting flip phones and now populating this forum with more and more silly questions looking for answers you can easily find using google. People have the EVO 4g and think they can post anything they want in the EVO General forum because you have an evo and you are posting in the general section. I want to see general information about the EVO and not other phones on other networks and other random things you find interesting. There are other forums for that.
We all have to start somewhere I know that and when I joined in 2006 the first 4 years I probably posted 100 times and now I am posting like crazy trying to help these people find answers hoping people learn something. People are here 1-2 years with over 1,000 posts.
Yeah, it helps to know that is was posted on a phone but with keyboards and big screens take a couple extra seconds to make sure everything is typed right. I do it why can't other people.
But what if you could have the benefits of knowing which client it was posted with, without having that crap in posts too? Surely that would be better, correct?

No, please, don't turn off signatures in the app. Can't they be stripped, however, the way they're stripped when quoting and responding on the desktop app? I agree, they're difficult to remove if you're responding on the app, but as you said, they're useful to indicate the poster is swyping, or whatever may account for little errors in their post.

Intrusive ads? Post here!

The internet is full of advertisments and let's face it, almost every site that has an ounce of traffic uses ad revenue. The intention of xda is not to burden its members with ads that distract from the user experience. With that being said, if you have a problematic ad, please take a screenshot of the ad and post here so admin can take care of it. right now, that is the solution in place.
Thanks for your help in keeping XDA "intrusive ad free".

It doesn't happen all the time but I have this "mobprizes" redirect when visiting XDA.
Happened to me a few times so far, not sure if others are experiencing it.
Same as chazam ^^^^
First instance of it today. Web URL is mobprizes.com and the site header says 'Android Rewards'. Tried to browse XDA via Dolphin browser on Android and was auto-redirected to this spam page; you cannot press 'Back' or 'Exit' in the browser and have to click 'OK', whereupon another window opens asking you to enter your mob number (supposedly so they can contact you to sort out sending you your prize - which if you do a quick search on Google means you will receive plenty of premium rate text messages and no prize!).
Not sure what you folks can do but thought would mention it.
Incidentally, when performing a search re: this, one of the replies was on Yahoo Answers - when I clicked on this I was redirected to the same damn Android Rewards page!
I also noticed another forum in the search results is experiencing the same thing. Seems to be spreading.
Attached.
That ad at the bottom left corner just popped up from nowhere. I may not have captured it completely sry...
Edit: it's an IE rollover to view ad.
Hey everyone,
I have also created a forum where people (including myself) are experiencing similar problems.
Perhaps it would be a great idea to share our knowledge between the two forums and see what we can do to get rid of these annoying ads.
would of if i didnt have ad block

The JS alert window looks like that, since FF4.0. Type javascript:alert('test message') into the address bar.

I'm not really bothered by the ads so i dont need an ad blocker but this 'IE rollover to view' ad is being a pain in the rear.
Pls get rid of it.
Thanks.
Edit: started using ad blocker
i clicked a reply notification from an email sent by the forum
this is the page it took me to
i blanked out my location to stop aliens tracking me
No offence meant to anyone here, but I'm quite surprised at all of this. Adblocks for Chrome and Firefox are available easily, nobody uses IE anymore and if you're on XDA you probably have a rooted phone and should logically therefore have an adblock app. If you really dislike ads, there's no need to put up with them

I just had the same thing. I click on 'OK' or whatever it said when i should probably have just used the back button. It took me to the mobprizes thing which is clearly a scam. Hopefully just being taken to the site but not clicking anything wont have installed any malicious (i've literally no idea about android malware/viruses etc.).

Infinite ads - no back button

I have written this on the main interface page and received no answers.
On some pages I get to a point where no matter how many times I click on the back button, the page goes nowhere. When I long click on the back button it shows a list and there are pages of the same link that has the word ads in it. If I click on the bottom item in the list and long click on the back button again, the same list comes up. If I do this several times, I finally get to where I was to navigate to the page.
While I haven't actually taken the time to count, I am sure that there are over 40-50 page listings that come up from one page with only a few messages.
I am using IE9 and I want to know what I can do to stop this overtly evil behavior. I fully understand the need for ads but I don't see any good reasoning to hijack my page. If I click on a link in the page, I can then go back to normal. It doesn't happen on every page, just sometimes.
Since my bookmark to this site is on IE9 and not Chrome or Firefox and since I navigate to this site only on my desktop, I don't get the problem elsewhere. This behavior is only on this site. Some sites open pop under windows (also evil) and pop up windows (annoying) but this one really gets me angry.
Again, how does one get this bad beharior to stop???!!!
Please help:crying:
I just went back to the offending page and several times it only had two instances of the ads link. I then went to Chrome and it didn't happen at all. I know there is evil here because it is related to advertising. Is someone posting hiding something here? Is the site doing this to me? Is it an attack on IE because of the anti microsoft sentiment?
Why Why Why???
I'm done. I'm hoping for some answers now.
Sorry about the rant. I have to use IE because it is what my non technical wife is used to and the always there bookmarks on the left are important. We also have land line becasue she won't give it up.
Ummm. Don't think your in the right place dude. You'd be better off searchin ms support or at least using a windows forum. This is Android!
But to try to help, sounds like a browser hijacker, or malware. You need to run scans with malwarebytes, spybot, hijack this, anti-virus....you get the idea.
Sorry I can't help you more than that. Good luck

If you haven't already, download and run malwarebytes. Its one of the best and can find tons of stuff that regular AV can't.
As for bookmarks, if it comes to it there are utilities you can use to back them up. Then uninstall/reinstall IE.
You can also import bookmarks from/to chrome.

While looking for another solution (to another problem) I found your post. The same thing happened to me today on this site.
The problem is not your PC, nor your browser and is not a malware issue either. In fact, it's from a script that is specifically designed to disable the browsers' back button. You see, the back button does not generate any revenue towards pay-per-click and/or similar schemes. Click-throughs, however, will...
Chances are that one of the page ads loaded the script (usually java) and set a cookie as well (to prevent one from replicating the problem).
Closing the browser window is about the only way to get around it. Holding the pull-down for the back-button only shows numerous versions of the same page.
Other browsers have plugins that can prevent the script from running in the first place and/or block the ads entirely.
If it keeps happening then you should contact one of the Forum Mods.
Hope this helps.

At OP, if you are still having problems with the site, got to the main XDA page and flag an admin to check out your issues. Plus you could search there and if no results pop up or no one else is having the issue, there error could be between the chair and keyboard. If you want this to remain open, it is your choice but you will have better luck in the main XDA section, rather than the SGS3 section.
Shoot me a PM if you want it closed. If no PM by morning my time, then it is gone.

that's fine, I understand, I have no issue with XDA asking for donation or anything. But how is this an reason for an independent forum app? There are thousands of forums, many with millions of members and I am a member of many forums. I don't see the logic for me to download independent app for each of these forum if they each had one.

USER-PREFERENCE,
i never use tapatalk,
i use the xda app FYI,
it's XDA's project,
and from my point of view,
i find it pretty useful since i only have XDA as my active forum so why bother getting a 3rd-party app when you can download a version directly from XDA.

it's kinda rude, saying that XDA is doing it for bucks,
since they did this to provide users an independent forum app,
you justified the means without proper knowledge,
And to put it, Tapatalk is a paid app. And XDA offers free as well as premium app. So users who don't have Tapatalk has the option to get the free XDA app, if they have only registered on XDA for browsing the forums. Not many users are members of different forums.
i got both...but to be honest i only use XDA app now as this is the only forum i check. and if by me having the premium version helps support for the maintenance of the site, it is the least i can do for what i have learned from XDA over the last two years and the goodies that i have done to my phone to make it better
The reason? I find 1.50 € for learning english a very, very, fair price (i have both premium apps)
Sent from my Xperia Pro using XDA Premium HD app
the reason they need money and this is one of the easiest methods to earn it
my question was direction at people who post at a number of forums, use tapatalk and use XDA app as well. I don't get the point of having XDA app.
Im using it rightnow.. well its a choice by thet way..
Sent from my Cherry w500 using xda premium
More choices in how you want to browse xda is not a bad thing.
I don't understand the problem.

I really enjoy xda and tapatalk so different choices for all lol

Reread your thread title and OP. Nowhere does it state that it's directed to people who use multiple forums, and you probably would have received different replies completely if you had made that clear. All you did was make the XDA app seem useless, which is wrong, because for people who only use XDA there's no point paying for tapatalk.

Personally, I don't see any difference between the two. They are identical to me, except that Tap can have multiple forums in it, obviously.
But I am having a problem with both and can't use any of the four forum apps I have purchased:
XDA Premium (phone)
XDA HD (tablet)
TapaTalk HD
TapaTalk 2
Don't get me wrong, I am more than happy to support the developers! I'm not bragging, but I have purchased about 300 apps in the last year and most of them worked fine without paying for them. I just wanted to make clear that this is not about complaining because of spending the money. I just sincerely want to be able to use them and I can't use any of the four.
What I mean by that, is that after scouring XDA and Google, I cannot find any help on how to view messages that I have received email notifications for, like when someone responds directly to one of your posts, or even when they post in a thread/forum you are Subscribed to.
I know that I can go into the XDA/TapaTalk (2) apps and go to:
LATEST >> PARTICIPATED
... But that doesn't take me to the posts that I have been notified about, like if I tap the link in the email and it takes me right to the message, ya know?
So I end up tapping the link and trying to view the messages in the browser on my phone, but since XDA does not have a mobile version of their web site, I end up double-tapping it to try to blow it up and then moving it all around the screen, back and forth, to try to read the message.
And of course, posting that way is Hell! It is very difficult to get it to go back up in the message and you can't even see a whole sentence, because it's blown up and the regular display is microscopic!
Does anyonne know how it is done? I love the concept of these apps, but I cannot believe that they would have left that sort of feature out, given that people would constantly be responding to posts they are notified about, right?
So I figure that I must be missing something. But I have looked at these apps for almost a year now (and recently purchased the new TapaTalk 2, hoping it had stuff the original doesn't) and I just can't find how to do this.
Does anyone know how this is done? Please?
Again, going to LATEST >> PARTICIPATED does not list/take me to the messages I am being notified about. The threads are in the list somewhere, I'm sure, but I'm hoping to do it like I do when I tap on the link in an email message. It would be really cool if you tapped on one and it opened Tap right to that specific message that you're being notified about!
I may have missed this answer somewhere in these forums, but I swear, I did scour them as best I could and I just cannot find this specific help! Nor did I find any help from the Tap folks, except how a forum owner could add their forum and a Google search produced the same result.
I apologize for the long message. I just wanted to make sure that I was absolutely clear, so that folks did not just guide me to "LATEST >> PARTICIPATED".
Thanks!!!

Big post.
So basically what you want is when you click on a link on any other app (mail for eg. since its giving you notifications). You need to clear all the defaults you have set around with your browsers. (do it from settings»applications»manage»here).
After that whenever you click on a link, it will show up a popup to chose the app to procede for the link. If the link is from xda use tapatalk (it'll take you to the post right away), if from other site, use your preffered browser. Again do not set anything as default as tapatalk cannot open other sites and you will need to clear the defaults again.
A Hero Can Be Anyone.
Dear Bruce Wayne,
Okay, I did what you said and it did not take me to the exact message. But it did take me to the same page, which makes it just a matter of scrolling down a few swipes up worth to scroll down to the message, which is certainly plenty good enough!
Plus, now I understand why this app's default posts per page is set to 10.
Thanks a bunch for your help, Bruce! I mean that! I can now, finally, use TapaTalk after a year of owning it! And that's because you took a few minutes out of your time to answer my question simply and plainly, without first assuming a certain level of knowledge on my part and I really appreciate that!
And I'm sincerely not trying to patronize you. As I said, I do mean that. It can be very difficult to get help, when so many people see a question as being "stupid" and you can't find anything on the web, ya know?
There was one thing I noticed though in the TapaTalk 2 app, which was that there was no option to "Quote" when responding (I wanted to quote a couple of sentences of you response when I replied).
Is there a trick to making it show that option that you know of?
If there isn't one, how would you know if it's responding to the message you're looking at on the screen?
Sorry to bother you again, Bruce! Last time, I promise!
