[Q] Black Screen :( Should I brick or unroot? Please help. - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, So here's my story. I plugged in my charger and I went downstairs. About 3o mins later I came back and the phone was still on, and it was super hot. Im running mexdroid V2fast and i've noticed that its been getting hot every once in awhile during charges and use.
THe phone was working and I rmoved the batt and let it cool down. I turned it on later and it was still working. I saw a movie and put it on silence and after the movie my screen went black. (six hours had past since the charge.)
I've removed batt and restarted the phone numerous times but it still wont work. SO I'm taking it into TMo.
Question, should I unroot the phone so they can replace it and if so, how can I unroot it without my screen working?
Or, should I just update the radio and pull the battery out, mid update? I've read this can cause hboot failure and the phone wont even turn on.
I'd prefer to keep my phone, I don't want a newer phone that isn't rootable. What should I do?

Can you get into recovery at all? You are supposed to to use setcpu for that rom because its overclocked to the max

I still get the black screen. I do believe I have it but I didn't have it set to be overclocked all the way. I had it at 1170, something around there. I've never clocked this phone over 2k.

Okay. I made my previous statement because the first time I used the mex fast version my battery got crazy hot and freaked me out.
So black screen no matter what? If so how would you be able to see where the update process is in hboot?
Brick it dude lol..
Honestly I have no idea. Bricking it is up to you man
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA Premium App

updating the radio is easy enough without havion to look at the screen. I just have to time it and it's not that hard.
Any other suggestions from other users?

What did you decide to do? I fell on my phone and it still works but the screen is jacked up, blacked out. I'm debating on going through the hassle of unrooting or bricking. Has anyone ever had a problem just sending it in and getting a replacement? What is the worst thing that could happen?

Reboot problem, need help

Ok, i did a search but not much help.
i have been having reboot problems but i normally take the batt out and let it sit for a while and it boots back up.... reason why i have to pull the batt is because the reboots dont stop.
i was using the phone and it started to reboot... but now no matter how long i let it sit it wont boot back up... just reboot.
i did flash a splash screen using pc36img and it does work but thats it.. it reboots..
im going to try and let the phone "rest" for a couple of hours but i have a feeling that wont help this time.
anything else you guys can think off?
it wont boot into recovery either.. it did when i pull the SD card but i dont think the card it bad, since i took it off and placed it in my pc to add the new splash screen.
i was reading some threads and some people said they had hardware problems that where causing the reboots so this may be the case with me as well.
ideas?

well, i have been using the latest Miui with the latest radio update with PRI etc.
i have been having the reboot problem for a little while but like i said, i can normal solve it by pulling the battery and after a few minutes turning the phone back on.
no matter the rom, it still this did.
today we where having problems with the signal... we are getting 4g updates
but, i think think that would cause the phone not to boot up.
i could be wrong of course
Seeing as it doesn't appear to be a specific ROM issue, it could be a hardware issue, such as a bad memory block, which if that's the case, obviously there is little advice besides take it to Sprint and try to get a replacement phone.
But if that is the only solution, I'd advise you to wait until a root method for the latest ota is available because your replacement phone would come with the latest, unrooted firmware and you'd be stuck without root. So if dealing with the reboot issues is possible ( though I'm sure frustrating) I'd hold out for the potential root method to be released.
i was putting up with the reboots since i am planning on getting the evo 3d. but i need a phone. i havent touched it for a while so i hope that somehow helps lol but if not i plan on going to the sprint store tom morning as soon as the open.. i have an hour cause i have to be on base at 10:00 and i dont want to be without a phone all day.
hope they can give me a replacement and i dont have to wait for one to be shipped.
this sucks
the thing that kinda worries me is that they know i root my phones, hell i have shown them a few things as well as the Evo with it 1st came out.. i ordered by phone and they didnt have the phone till later.
anyways..
thanks for the help.. it has to be hardware related, dont think it can be anything else.
it it just booted but as soon as it got up and running it rebooted again... damn it
Well. Got a new out of the box evo. They didn't have any at the warehouse.
So here I am with a stock evo. Boo lol but no reboot problem, so I'm happy.

Overheating?

I seem to be having an issue with my phone overheating and rebooting. It seems to happen consistently when using navigation or when playing games (I'm hooked on Gem Miner). Always at an inopportune time. To me this seems like a result of bad hardware or something but is it possible that rooting and installing ROMs like CM7 or Kingdom Stock Sense?
I bought my phone at Best Buy and ended up getting the warranty, so assuming I can revert the phone back to stock, I should be able to get this covered under warranty. Right?
My phone gets hot when under stress, but that's totally normal. But for it rebooting, that could mean bad hardware. What rom are you on? Some roms will run hotter than others.

Well how it is it getting before it reboots? I think at 119F it will reboot/shut off and flash the LED. Seems like kernels can also impact heat, as well as custom undervolting mods.

I was using CM7 for a while (pre-7 and up to 7.0.3) and recently tried Kingdom Sense. Under both of those I could only get a few moments of navigation before it would just completely shut down.
I actually just restored the stock ROM (though I'm still running S-OFF) and it doesn't seem to be overheating anymore. I guess I'll have to see what happens. It would totally suck if I am forced to stay on the stock experience after having been rooted/ROM'd for so long...

Its higher than 119F. Mine hit 122F the other day and didn't reboot, unless the safety shut off didn't kick in on mine. Don't think it is much higher than that though before it does.
I had heard it shuts down at 119 but my phone hasn't ever gotten that hot. I've only managed to get it up to about 114, that was multitasking and charging, overclocked to 1113.
When it reboots, do you get 5 vibrations and then the indicator flashes green until you pull the battery? If so, you are starting to have serious problems.

I'm leaning toward a hardware issue. The reason I say that is because I'm using CM7.0.3 and Chad's Incredikernal and when I use navigation I also connect my car charger and have never had a heat issue nor any reboots. I drove from SC to FL back in Feb and had navigation running the whole time.
Yea, I'm thinking its a hardware issue. I just downloaded Cut the Rope and can consistently get it to reboot/overheat after about 10-15 min of play. Only problem is that I'm not sure if the geniuses at the Best Buy warranty center will notice the S-OFF or not and if so how do I revert that when I don't have CWM on my phone anymore...?

You can get S-On by using the "S-On" tools by unrevoked, Don't think I can post links just yet but you can copy/paste the URL below, it should help guide you.
unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you should see a FAQ section.
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update
The link to the S-On tool can be found at the URL above, I copied/pasted so you would know what to look for.

I assume you're not completely an expert in this matter, but let me see if I get this right... I have to go back to having CWM on my phone so I can apply the S-ON zip and then re-run the stock recovery to get back to complete 100% stock. Sound right? I wouldn't even consider it if I didn't think there was a slight chance that I'd get flagged on the warranty review for having S-OFF set. I don't want them to have any reason to deny my getting a new phone.
Hi - long time lurker, barely ever post, but I'm gonna chime in here.
My DInc also reboots, and it is warm to the touch when it does happen. Don't know how hot though sry. I've been rooted since November, but haven't installed a Custom Rom, just removed bloat, and added some other useful tools. The biggest change I've made was changing the fonts. I don't over/under clock either (it runs just fine for me). My reboots seem to be increasing in number. At first it would be once a month, then a few times a week, and now a couple times a day.
Sometimes, my phone will reboot just once, and then continue to work. Sometimes 2-3x in a row, and then continue to work or not. Sometimes, it just vibrates 5x quickly, and then is locked (LED flashes), and the only way to recover is to pull the battery and start over.
Seems to happen MOSTLY around certain times of day - 4:30-6pm when I'm on my way home from work (no, not using my phone, but it happens anyway), and around lunchtime (again, not using it, or if I am it's barely). Other times it happens too - but really randomly. I'm ruling out different apps that might be triggering it, but don't think that's the issue.
QUESTION - if it is heat related, and the phone is supposed to go into shut-down mode at 119*, but seems to be different temps for everybody, could it be the thermostat? Could it be registering a false temp reading and think it needs to shut down? Has anyone explored this?
I'm not an engineer, or even a programmer, but I like to play one on TV. Thx
Oh - I forgot to add this:
There have been times when it would reboot, and I've placed my phone and battery (removed from phone) on the vents of an airconditioner, or even sitting on a frozen ice pack (the kind for a cooler) and it would still happen afterwards. To the touch, my phone would be cold, not freezing, but cold. Seriously lower temp than what it was when it was very warm to the touch...
I'm definitely with you on the first scenario. I just brought it to my local Best Buy where I bought it (with warranty) and they sent it off and gave me a loaner DInc to use till mine's repaired. They said, if they can't repair it, they'll give me a DInc2 as a replacement since the Dinc1 is "backordered" (aka not being carried).
jetsaredim - I was able to get a replacement DInc sent to me overnight (free!). My first replacement had a faulty USB port, so I couldn't charge my phone. I have 'another' DInc being sent to me now. Other than the faulty USB port, I haven't had any overheating issues so far (knock on wood).
First phone manufactured in June 2010
First replacement phone, manufactured in April 2010, and remanufactured June 2011 (via ##7764726)
I just got my replacement Incredible today. I just tested my original phone again by watching 15 minutes of video on youtube and BANG!!!!!!!!!! It rebooted as usual. Screen and battery get very warm. The reboots seem to happen when watching videos online or offline, playing games for 10 to 15 minutes, browsing the web for 15 to 20 minutes, using Google Maps with or without charging at the same time, and charging and talking on the phone at the same time. Well, I'm sending back the original and hoping that the replacement doesn't fail me. Glad that I swapped it just before the manufacturer warranty was up.
Have had the Dinc since week one. 100% stock - have not rooted (yet) and stock battery - in the past month it has 'overheated" and rebooted twice. Never happened before. Both times while using navigation and charging. Could it simply be the battery? It's not holding a charge like it used to too which also makes me wonder about the battery.

Bricked???

So I was having issues with my 4G the other day, I would turn it on, and it would just say "turning on 4g antenna" till it finally drained the battery, so I updated the wimax, (took about 2 min, if that...) and rebooted, tried 4g, and it turned on no problem. About 2 days ago, I had to do a nand backup, from before I flashed the wimax, and forgot to re-flash the wimax, so again today, while trying to use 4g, it got stuck on "turning on 4g antenna" again, so I rebooted, and still "turning on", went into nand, and wiped cache, and dalvik, and flashed the wimax zip again, it said reboot to complete the update, I did, and for the last 10 min or so, it has been on the screen with the htc phone, and green down arrow with circle around it.... I know it shouldnt take this long, so what'd I do wrong? Is it a brick now? Should I continue to let it do whatever its doin till it either finishes, or kills the battery? or pull the batt, and try a reboot?
Don't pull the battery, just give it some more time.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
been about 20 min now..... how long should I wait? and then what if it wont finish on its own?
Well, it shouldn't take that long. The only way to permanently brick your phone is during a radio update, and it's kind of risky to pull the battery. But you almost don't have a choice.
Hopefully if you pull the battery, it'll finish quickly when you put it back in. You aren't guaranteed to brick it by doing so, and it isn't a radio update so I don't know if wimax will brick your phone as well. I think in your situation it'll be okay to pull the battery, but if it doesn't turn on at all after putting the battery back then it never will.
Good luck, hope it works out for you!

What does it say on the screen??
If I remember, if it says clearing cache, and has been there a long time, it's OK to reboot. Not pull the battery, just select reboot, if you can.
Been awhile since I flashed radios.
ya, after 40min, I pulled the batt, it did turn on again, but went right to the update screen (htc phone with grren arrow and circle around the arrow), cant get into fastboot, just right back to the update.... am I gonna have to tell sprint I "LOST" my phone now? lol

Dosent say anything, just a pic of the phone with the green arrows....
If it's still updating then you can try to wait it out. As far as I know, there's no way around that screen.
You can continue to pull the battery over & over. I know someone was trying to brick their phone that way and it took multiple tries to actually get it to not turn on. If you can get to that point then you can just take it into Sprint. It'll never turn on, so they'll never know. Or if you feel like you need to pay the deductible, claim it lost. It sounds like your wimax was messed up already.

Ya, I'm gonna just let it drain the battery, or start up.... whichever comes first....
Then I will prolly just keep pulling the battery till bricked.... No, I dont feel the need to pay the deductible so thanks for the tip!
I'm guessing there was something up with the wimax... IDK... Did I do anything wrong from the steps I listed above? did I forget to wipe something?
so it didnt take long to kill the battery.... lol
So, I have another battery.... I have verified that with the phone off, it does charge the battery, but no matter what I do, it goes right to the update screen... So I assume this is a brick? But... I have seen posts that if the batt charges, and the screen does come on, and show something, that its not truly bricked.... So, might I b able to do something here?
Any tips would be extremely appreciated at this point, before I really do fully brick it....

phone shut itself off

the battery was almost dead last night and i plugged it in before i went to bed, when i woke up phone would not respond had to pull the battery to get it to come back on, only thing i did different was use my old blackberry charger and set an alarm , any ideas?

What are the settings for sleep of death? I am running SetCPU and on two occasions I haven't been able to turn the phone back on. Had to do a battery pull.
Do you have a screen off profile? Sometimes if you set the clock too low during screen off it will cause it to just go into a "sleep of death" at least I've had it happen once or twice before I fixed it.

because that has happened to me a couple of times already with other phones
Did this only happen while charging?
mine shuts down at any given time, I'm gonna exchange next week.
Just trying to see if a rom fixes it, which at this point doesn't so I guess back to the store.
It sucks because my screen ain't messed up like a lot of folks are saying and yes I did the test.

after I flashed EB, it went a full day without a reboot, then they started again.
Still reboots randomly threw the day. Went back to stock, no difference. Samsung support knows nothing, T-Mobile is more clueless. Can't return to the store anymore (past 14 days) so I guess I need to do a exchange threw T-Mobile. (at least its prob too soon for a refurb)

Yup, same w/ the root, no root, different roms... I got my replacement yesterday, so far no reboots at all. Keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way, holding onto my original for a few more days.

faulty nexus?

i ordered a verizon nexus off ebay for a decent price. physically it looked great but the battery life has been pretty bad. overnight i can get it down to 3% an hour discharge just sitting there, but when i actually use it i'm lucky to get an hour and a half screen on time. and that's using an underclocked kernal.
also, it seems that no matter what rom or kernal i use i get a freeze once a day where i have to pull the battery. not an SOD but the screen is on and frozen and the phone is totally unresponsive. stock or custom rom, stock or custom kernal.
did i get hosed with this phone?
PS i ordered a new samsung battery just in case but it didn't help

also some times when i wake the phone up it lags like mad until i turn off the screen and turn it back on. raised the minimum CPU speed but it still does it. also the phone does go into deep sleep and doesn't seem to wake itself often
ok my phone just froze in recovery too. something is not right here
My guess is main board. My first GNex had little flaws that I thought were just software/New technology problems - NFC tags were often hard to register, reboots at random, power button taking a few tries to activate from time to time, device freezing at odd times. Then one day it just wouldn't turn on. Still under warranty, got it replaced, and now realize how defective it was.

i guess since i'm not the original owner i'm probably out of luck. guess i'll contact the seller and see what happens
i think i kno whats causing the lag ! i cant really say but battery life ! to get rid of the lag install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5rb3ZpdC5wLmZvcmV2ZXJnb25lIl0.
let it fill ur sd card and when its about 90% or so done ! stop the filling and do "release free space" then reboot bout 3-4 times ! ur lag should be gone !
it worked for me , cant really say it'll work for u ! but give it a shot
edit- DO NOT USE THE PHONE (no sms, calls NOTHING) while this procedure is going on, or else itll freeze and get stuck on bootanimation (at times ) ! and prevent it from going to sleep ! do 10 min for screen timeout in display settings !
That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

Can attest to the app "Forever Gone" doing its job. :good:
well it looks like its a moot point anyway. i bought this phone so i could go prepaid when i left my job but verizon is ridiculous with their plans. they won't let me put the nexus on a prepaid plan , but they'll let me get 300 mb of data for 80 bucks a month! bunch of thieves. i guess i'm gonna get a nexus 4 and tmobile prepaid
I feel ya man, this is probably my last Verizon phone, bought it off contract too so I can leave anytime B)
Verizon's 3G has gone to hell in many places, like Sprint-speed, I mean 4G my record is about 33 Mbps down, but I live in an "Extended 4G Coverage Area", A.K.A. no 4G and barely any 3G, where I'm lucky to pull 200 kbps down...
T-Mobile doesn't have this problem, and I don't need the exclusive Verizon coverage anymore... Looks like I made up my mind lol, no I'll be here for a while.

That doesn't matter. The warranty goes with the phone, not the owner. As long as its under warranty they will replace it.
