[Q] Exchange rate on marketplace - Windows Phone 7 General

For those of you who do not know, the Canadian dollar has been worth more than the US dollar for a few months. So, I would like to know why apps cost more here than on the US market place? The old "Distribution Costs" argument doesn't work for digitally delivered goods, so I would like to know what the excuse is now? MS, you are cheesing me off.
PS is there a way for a stock Canadian phone to access the US marketplace? I don't really want to walsh it (or whatever unlocking it is called these days).

Do you have VAT in Canada? That could be your answer.

thats nothing the exchange rate in uk is 1.6 dollars for a pound. PES There costs $4.99 and Here 3.99

Well $4.99 apps are 4,99€ here -.-.
While $1 is 0,69€.
And I don't think that we have 45% VAT^^

That may have nothing to do with Marketplace. AFAIK the price in local currency is set by the author.

We have 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST). But that does not account for 3-5% exchange, and 10% higher price. Grrr...

Microsoft will never read this but I refuse to pay for most apps in the marketplace. The prices are outrages. To date I have bought two. The xda app and Weave when it was a $1.09. A that's right. We don't have any 99 cent Apps here.

same in Australia here. The harvester is $6.99 and it priced at $9.00 in Australia.1 Australian dollar = 1.0767 U.S. dollars as at 9th of may2011.
the only solution is to download free app.IMHO,in term of app pricing,Android did the best job here, how much you pay is depend on the exchange rate at the moment you buy the app.

Is it still the cheapest to buy GNex from Clove.uk now?

I am in US so shipping from there is <$700 now,
is it still the cheapest now?
Will it be cheaper after 12/9 that the canadian version had come out?
Who knows if you'll have to pay customs fees... I paid the extra $50 ($764) to go with a US reseller but they're being sketchy at the moment... See my post (Negri Electronics is being sketchy).
I'd say go US but maybe not Negri.. I'm sure everything is fine but still... You could pay more than you think with credit card international fees and customs fees depending on the shipping company they use.
EDIT -- I JUST GOT MY SHIPMENT NOTIFICATION!! WHOOOOO

International pricing is pretty firm. The UK prices aren't going to be effected by whatever happens in the rest of the world. A lot of folks in the UK and EU buy their phones outright so demand is what drives pricing. The SGS2 stayed pretty firm for about four months and then started to drop a bit. It's still over $500 having been out since May. If you're importing, don't look for bargains and sales because they don't exist (through legitimate resellers). I've bought from both Clove and Handtec and was pleased with both.
Found this: http://welectronics.com/gsm/Samsung/SAMSUNG_NEXUS-PRIME-TITANIUM-SILVER.HTML These guys are located in Chicago and selling for $724.99. Supposedly these prices are wholesale to the public. Anyone ever dealt with this retailer before?
how much is it gonna be in Canadian GSM version?
I imported from clove.uk to the US and they were great service. Shipped on a Wednesday, got here that Friday.
Though I must say, it shipped with DHL and the packaging was kinda sketchy for a $700 dollar electronic device. It was in a plastic DHL bag and the box the phone came in was just wrapped in fine-bubble bubble wrap. No damage and it works fine, but still kinda irked me when I saw it.

I ordered two GNs from clove which arrived today. No import duties. I have a thread in this forum showing the current policy regarding importing cellphones to the US (with documentation from the corresponding government agencies).
As for the packaging, I too am a little disappointed that they only used bubble wrap and a dhl bag. The corners of the boxes where slightly damaged; however, the phone itself was fine.
I preordered mine from Handtec and the experience was awesome. I ended up paying around $700 total and somehow the phone got to me within one day!!! It was awesome to see that tracking from Fedex on the day it was shipped telling me it would be at my doorstep by the very next day before 10:30am... now that's fast, especially coming from Europe!

Popular Electronics, which is right next door to Overseas Electronics has it for $699 in store - cash only. I plan to go there this week and buy myself one. $700 is the cheapest I've seen it go for. I've bought a phone and sold a phone from them before so they're legit.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/108564/IMG_4995.PNG
I decided to email Popular electronics about the Galaxy Nexus and it seems like they're willing to bargain about the tax. Chicago has ridiculous tax at 9.75% so the phone would have been $767.15. With a simple email, they were willing to do $710 flat. I'm sure when a little more persuasion, I could get them to $700 or throw in a free case. Just a heads up to all the Chicagoans. Probably pick this up this weekend.

Don't you find it kinda shady that they're cash only and are willing to negotiate to remove sales tax? lol. I'm sure its fine. Just sayin'.
That does seem odd that they have a cash only policy. Really weird for an electronics store. Maybe they have a no receipt policy too.
But back on topic, I just bought my nexus from clove last night. Order is processing and now it's just a waiting game!

When paying with cash, it's always considered under the table. They probably don't file their taxes legally so it helps them when people pay in cash. Good for both parties. They're a small electronics store, nothing huge but they do carry the latest phones.
Not sure about the receipt policy, probably isn't one but as long as it's brand new, I'll be happy.

You forget about the third party. The government and all society that utilizes tax money. (Including yourself)
Taxes are there for a reason and should not be avoided by dodgy business practices.
I would check the phone out in-store to reduce your risk of having to return the device since you may not be able to.

Tell that to Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle and so on. They all dodge taxes. What they're doing it is legal but it's effects you also. It always seems like when a little business does it, they should be shunned by their practice. The way they're doing it is probably illegal but it's still dodging taxes.

Don't assume that paying with cash is always considered under the table.
Another reason for the cash policy is that is removes the credit card processing fees for the transaction. Depending on their processor, it should be around $0.25 + 2% of the transaction amount. So on a $700 transaction, that is roughly $14.25.
(American Express' fees are around 3.5%, so the cost on that transaction is around $25).
If you are a retailer, that extra credit card fee hurts quite a bit. Think about that the next time you buy a pack of gum with your credit card.
http://truecostofcredit.com/378767
That being said, in this instance their's a good chance that this is under the table. I would much rather buy the phone on my Amex and get the additional warranty they provide. Also, why not just import it from clove for $670 rather than paying $700 cash? Makes no sense to me.

Buy from the Play store and have it shipped to one of these states: Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware or Oregon. Better hurry before those states decide they can use the extra consumer bucks.

if you know someone in a state that wont collect tax, you can have it shipped there. how you'll get it from that state is another matter LOL. last year I bought a Kindle Fire using my Amazon account (with a California billing address) and had it shipped to New Mexico. I wasn't charged sales tax. The Kindle Fire was a gift to the person in New Mexico.

Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the following states are subject to tax:
Arizona
California
Kansas

New Jersey
New York
North Dakota
Pennsylvania
Texas
Washington
You could try buying it from B&H Photo Video in new york, they don't charge shipping or tax to California.
If the person you are shipping it to is someone you know well, you might want to ask them to check the unit out before sending it to you and make sure there aren't any issues with the screen, unless you're able to or willing to ship it back if something is wrong.
Massachusetts added to the list on a few months they already passed it. This state sucks. They up taxes on everything. Just became the 2nd highest state for ciggerette prices behind NY. Thank god I don't smoke

Costco Price now $79 (cheaper than BB inc tax)

I was at my local Costco today and noticed the VZW price was down to $79 So if you've picked yours up there roll in for a $75ish price adjustment. You will need your ORIGINAL receipt in order get it.
For anyone holding out that means that the Costco price is now lower than BestBuy price since BB charges tax on retail price not out of pocket price like Costco.
Denver tax rate
BB 50+(650*.085) = 105.25
Costco 80+(150*.085) = 92.75
edit: costco tax adjusted. Is based off price of 150 not 80

Besides adding a second line and updating it? I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I'm going to pay full price for my next phone.
A lot of people should consider the gas too. I have a Best Buy 5 minutes away. Costco is a 25-30 minute drive if theres no traffic. With my big ole V8, it'd cost more in gas than it's worth

The full tax is a state thing. In Ca. you pay full tax on the retail price.
At Costco, there is no retail price so you pay based on what they sell.
I was thinking about going to Costco and getting the phone, then after 14 days cancel and pay the ETF.
Sill cheaper than going into Verizon and paying full price.
$100+tax+$320+15days service = ~$475-500.
Almost $200 cheaper than I would pay at full retail.
I only payed $3.74 at best buy.

Why is HTC charging tax on orders?

I just ordered my phone from HTC's site. I was quite surprised to see I got charged tax on my order.
According to US law, they can only charge tax in states where they physically have a presence. In looking at their e-commerce partner, DR Globaltech, they only have physical locations in CA, WA, MN, and PA.
Given that I live in Maryland, how can they charge me tax? It's not like I bought it thru the carrier our anything like that.
Anyone else experience this?

Some states have enacted taxes on internet purchases regardless of business location.

at least shipping is free.

This doesn't answer the original question, but technically, the issue is whether they can force the company to collect sales tax, not whether they can impose it. Paying sales tax is the obligation of the purchaser of the product not the seller. If a company has a physical presence in the state, the state has jurisdiction over the company and can require them to collect the tax and pay it on behalf of the purchaser. If there is no presence, the state can't force them to collect the tax, but the company can do so voluntarily. Even if they don't, the purchaser still is obligated to pay the tax and the state can charge you with tax evasion if you don't and collect the tax plus interest and penalties. This is why, from time to time, states have sued out of state companies to get their records of sales into the state. In many states, you are expressly required to include on your income tax return the value of any internet purchases made in the year on which you didn't pay sales tax and pay it then. If you don't, they can go after you for failing to report as well as failure to pay the tax.

I did an online chat raising the same issue with them and they simply said they are required to charge tax. I agree that something is fishy though. I live in Pa. and I don't think HTC has any presence in Pa. that would obligate them to collect tax.

It is because HTC isn't shipping the phone, they use a 3rd party company for their supplier. Can't recall the name of it off the top of my head. But if "they" have a storefront in your state, then you get taxed.

I mentioned the supplier and where their locations were in the country. Since they have an office in Pittsburgh, it makes sense tax is charged in PA.
It's one thing if they have to collect it legally. Otherwise, they just may be pocketing it.

This has been mentioned already but It's because they're internet orders and just like Amazon they're required to collect the tax for 45 states.
It has nothing to do with storefronts or brick and mortar retail operations (traditional Nexus).
EDIT: Taken from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marketplace_Fairness_Act This passed the Senate May 6, 2013
"The federal government has considered legislation--the Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013--that would affect large online retailers and how online sales taxes are collected in all states. The proposed federal law would allow states to require sellers not physically located in their state to collect taxes on online and catalog sales made to people in their state. Sellers that make $1 million or less in annual sales and have no physical presence in the state would be exempt from this requirement. States would have to meet certain criteria to simplify their sales tax laws and make sales tax collection easier before they could require sellers to collect the tax. "
This bill was reintroduced in 2015.
Residents of the 45 states with sales and use tax must pay tax on their online purchases. However, according to the Supreme Court rulings in National Bellas Hess v. Illinois (1967) and Quill Corp. v. North Dakota (1992), retailers, including catalog and online sellers, only need to collect sales and use tax for states where they have a physical presence (This is traditional Nexus).
If an online retailer does not collect sales tax at the time of purchase, the consumer must pay the use tax due directly to the state. While business compliance with use tax filing is quite high, consumer compliance is rather low. <--- In other words HTC and others collect taxes to be compliant because consumers are generally not reliable enough to be compliant. This is practical application in compliance preparation for potential changes in the law.
The Marketplace Fairness Act seeks to increase compliance and tax collections by shifting the responsibility for payment from consumers to retailers.

In Florida, I have never paid taxes for internet orders on Amazon -- There have been a few special scenarios however. So I'm not surprised.
Looks like this is a gray area. Only 4 states require taxes on sales bound for other states where they have no physical presence. DR and HTC don't appear to be in any of them.
While not required, more sites are collecting taxes than before. Amazon was noted as an exception for not doing it.
Of course I'm screwed since Amazon set shop in Baltimore up.

Personally, I'd rather them not collect it.

The Marketplace Fairness Act seeks to increase compliance and tax collections by shifting the responsibility for payment from consumers to retailers.

amazon does not collect tax on all purchases and the only reason they tax me sometimes now is because they put a distribution center here a few years ago.
ive also ordered from ebay and other online retailers that have not collected taxes on my purchases.

Yeah I get that about Amazon, I was super tired and not communicating well and tried to edit my post but wasn't very clear.
As for other vendors, just because they don't charge doesn't mean they shouldn't charge.
What I'm trying to say is HTC is carrying the burden of tax compliance for customers.
If a person want's to see if they're charging tax inappropriately; someone from Oregon, Montana or the other 3 states that don't have sales tax would need to check if they were charged tax on their orders. Because of the burden of compliance HTC is carrying, they're doing everyone a favor by removing the burden of tax compliance from the consumer for the 45 states that do have sales tax.
As previously stated by others if you live in a state with sales or use tax, as a consumer you're required to account for any appropriate tax if not charged by the vendor ie: consumer carry the burden of tax compliance.

I mentioned the supplier and where their locations were in the country. Since they have an office in Pittsburgh, it makes sense tax is charged in PA.
It's one thing if they have to collect it legally. Otherwise, they just may be pocketing it.

If they are pocketing it then it is illegal. If any company collects a tax they must hand it over to the state.

Anyone in Ontario order one? Can you tell me how much you paid total for shipment and customs?
Thanks.

Same story. But ordered two phones. They were delivered from California for less than 24 hours by DHL express.
Although I have not ordered any special shipping service.
The 128gb? How can I use the student discount?
I'm not a student
I'm very interested too, is anybody want to share their student discount ?

There is nothing to share.
Just register here
https://www.studentbeans.com/student-discount/us/oneplus
and you will get the personal discount code that will be valid for one month.
But do not use gmail when you register, try to use something else.
PS.
I also came from my good old Nexus 6 to OP5T
I still think Nexus 6 the best Google phone ever made. Had zero issues with it for 3 years.
I'm not a student so I cant buy it with the discount ( or there's another way? ) anyone o had bought it without the discount can share how much has paid?
Thanks in advance
I bought mine on the release day and received it on Black Friday (which is no special day in Canada). Paid about $740, used a referral code from a friend.
Very happy with it. It works perfectly on Public Mobile (which doesn't sell phones and expects you to have one unlocked, though Telus-locked phones will work).
IIRC there was only one shipping choice, DHL (yuk) and the phone shipped from California HST-paid so it didn't stop at customs.
