[Q] Cm7 Nightly, or any rom nightly - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried doing a quick search but didn't find the answer.
So I'm on cm7 7.0.2.
I want to do nightlies, but i'm not sure if that means I have to flash partition, cache, and dalvek?
If thats true, then that means i'm doing an equivalent to a factory reset right (obviously not factory, but settings wipe and apps gone, etc...)?
For that matter, what is the appropriate way to run nightlies?
Titanium batch then RM backup, then flash everything and restore only titanium batch or restore RM backup too?
I've read through some other forums and there seems to be a mixed bag of answers...

Just do the backup ("nandroid") using either recovery or ROM Manager (make sure to use version 3.0.2.6+ of recovery).
Then you can either flash the nightly using ROM Manager (don't need gapps then once downloaded, only select to wipe dalvik-cache NOTHING else and DON'T partition anything) or download the ROM, CONFIRM MD5HASH MATCHES and flash in recovery. Again, wipe Dalvik-cache (found in advanced menu) ONLY.
As you are not wiping data you won't lose anything. But the backup is done just in case something goes wrong.
If it does and you flashed via ROM Manager proceed as per recovery method.

Start with the most recent. Update them every time a new comes out. If something breaks resort to previous working version.
REMEMBER that these are EXPERIMENTAL and you MUST assume they ARE broken.
Read the thread every day, understand the risks, absorb everything mentioned and well done for trying it; I'm not keen myself.

Nightly thread? I performed the search on nightly through the search bar on the top right of the page.
I also read through the pages that the forum suggested before I posted.
What is this nightly thread you speak of?
anyway, this is exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks

Uhhhh Ohhhh... EVO repeatedly rebooting

Now, I thought, "hey, I'm not a novice with flashing ROM images, nor am I a *nix or system notice..." So, I decided to cook a ROM using the Online ROM kitchen: http://evo.feeder.pk/
I had run unrevoked3 + unrevoked forever, so I had clockwork recovery.
So, I copied the zipped ROM generated off the online ROM kitchen to the sdcard and then via clockwork installed /sdcard/update.zip (the ROM).
So, everything installed okay, then upon reboot, it seems to go into a reboot loop.
Lucky for me I performed a nandroid backup before installing the newly built ROM, and I'm in them middle of performing a nandroid restore; which I hope will resolve the problem.
1) Will the nandroid restore actually restore my entire phone back to how it was previously?
2) How do I actually install another ROM properly?
These are pretty n00b questions, but any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

1) Its supposed to...
2) From what it sounds like, you installed everything okay, just with a bad ROM image. Installing any of the other ROMs already posted should relieve you of your bootloops (as should the nandroid). Unless you try overclocking, which some folks experience bootloops when overclocked over 1.15.

Thank you sir. nandroid obviously did restore everything back to normal (wasn't sure to what extent nandroid backed up the device, but it looks like every single thing was backed up).
As for a ROM, I really just want the stock froyo ROM, but rooted... Do you have any suggestions? I can't go OTA since I have clockwork recovery.
Thanks,
Matt

I have flashed most of the ROMs here, but I have mostly been using CM6 (Cyanogenmod 6) since it came out. I did try Baked Snack, which is a very nice ROM with a beautiful theme, but it is Sense based and if by any chance you wanted to use a Wiimote for emulators, you cant. It is based off the HTC bluetooth stack, CM6 is not. Its kinda nice to get nightly (experimental) updates to flash if you want to also.
Its all a matter of personal preference, but my BEST results have been with CM6 - benchmark, features, and otherwise.
*E* You also may want to consider posting something like this in the Q&A forum next time...
Uhhhh Ohhhh wrong section

Your welcome...now show your dedication to this forum by following instructions & quit cluttering the development section with basic Questions
Not to delf: seems like I fall under a ClockworkRecovery user who's dalvik cache doesn't actually clear. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763) Kick ass!
I have the same problem as you!!!! I posted it in the wrong forum though so I'll briefly psot my problem and maybe someone can help me. I was trying to update my radio to the latest radio and it worked. I then realized I didn't have a 4g signal and the mod I was using supports 4g. So I tried updating to the latest wimax and then my phone started rebooting. After it boots android it reboots after a bout a minute or 2.
I FIXED it with a nandroid restore which had my 2.1-1 back up which I made during the idiot proof guide. So thinking that I can always use that backup as a restore I tried re-installing the radios because I don't see how they could not work on my phone and thought maybe I had a corrupt file, but voila my phone started rebooting again, but this time nandroid restore tells me to fix it via adb restore, BUT my usb isn't working either. So I'm stuck and have no idea on how to get this thing to load my restore. Any help would be appreciated.
I didn't read you're reply. But after installing RA, I think I'll be alright...
Here's the deal from start to finish...
download and install the android SDK
install all the necessary drivers
restart in recovery mode ( adb restart recovery or hold volume down when powering on the device)
use adb shell to access the shell while the device is in recovery
1) install RA recovery using adb method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026) This may or may not be okay with or without running unrevoked first... not sure if flash_image was placed on the device by unrevoked.
2) reboot into recovery
3) flush dalvik cache via RA recovery.
4) flush cache via RA recovery.
5) use adb push to copy a downloaded ROM zip to /sdcard/update.zip (using RA recovery to mount the /sdcard/ partition)
- I've downloaded http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7512117
6) Install update.zip from sdcard in RA recovery
- After booting into the new ROM one time, I allowed it to start and configured... then performed 3,4,5 against flashing a new kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763
And that should be that. I'm currently downloading the ROM, so I don't know how it'll be.

[Q] Cyanogen Nightly not Working ???

I used unrevoked to root my EVO-4G and put the nightly mod on the sdisk and tried updating in recovery by selecting flash update from sdcard. why didn't it work? Basically it started up the phone and would stay at the splash screen. I fixed it, but I would really like to flash some custom ROMs. I am now running 3.07 with radio 2.15 etc. is there something I am missing? I am somewhat new to this and all the info you can give me would really help.
ps: when I boot in hboot mode it says "Supersonic EVT3 ship s-off, HBOOT 2.02" on the top
You need to wipe your /data and /cache partitions before flashing. The easiest thing to do is download and flash the FORMAT_ALL.zip (search for it on here, I've attached it a few times) and then flash CM.
Here is a link to Calkulin's mods, the Format all zip is in the OP (origianl post).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785271
Also, if formatting doesn't work, try redownloading the ROM, perhaps you got a corrupt downlaod...

Quite right! An MD5sum can verify this. Just run the md5sum command from the command line, or if you're on Windows, use this:
http://code.kliu.org/hashcheck/
Thank you guys, I will certainly try the suggestions above. I did wipe all data/cache before flashing the first time. I thought that maybe the latest nightly ROM didn't have the propper radio version for my phone. Is this a possibility?
Alright, so I flashed the regular CyanogenMod the one that says "stable" because the nightly was just too experimental for me... lol. anyways, it looks the same as the Nightly did, I haven't noticed any problems yet, but how do I dl apps? I do not see a market

You need to flash google apps, which is not included in CM.

If you're talking about the Sprint Visual VoiceMail, if you search in the Themes & Apps section, you can find a download. Otherwise, the most popular voicemail solution is Google Voice, which is what I use.
I dl it from on of the forums THIS ONE and it works great, but I now get a text msg every time I get a vm. is there a better place for me to dl it where this will not happen. I am not satisfied with just blocking that text number like they suggest
edit: and how do I remove this one to add the other one if you CAN help me find a new one that will not text me
Also, i cannot adb to my phone now that it is cyanogen, i uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled the adb/bootloader interface drivers with no success

[Q] How to update CM9 from alphaX to alphaY

Hi everybody,
just a quick question.
I flashed CM9 alpha7 a few days ago and now I saw that CM9 alpha8 is available, however if I go on
Menu -> Phone Info -> Update system
I cannot find any update.
So how can I update it to alpha8?
Thank you very much!
Lol, clicked wrong button, didn't mean to abuse thank button
Quoted from CM9
'Upgrades from previous versions of CM9 are the same process as install, except you do not need to wipe anything. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to even wipe cache and dalvik-cache when upgrading between CM9 versions. You only need to wipe if you are doing a major upgrade, switching to a different ROM entirely, or attempting to fix bugs caused by bad backups or corrupt app data.'
So you will need to download the latest ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576874
And flash it through CWM recovery
Hope it helps and good luck

Flashing a ROM won't work

So I wanted to flash the FNV AoSP ROM on my Galaxy Nexus GSM. First off al I flashed the 4.2 takyu version and rooted it with SuperSU. After that I flashed the recovery with Clockwork 6.0.1.5 after that I did the following things:
- Wipe data/factory reset
- Mounts and storage > Format /system
- Wipe cache
- Wipe dalvik
- Flashed ROM fnv_20121119_003_maguro.zip
- Flash 4.2 gapps
Am I doing something wrong?
When you say, won't work what do you mean?
Does the recovery not flash the file? If so, what error does it say?
Does it not boot after what seems to be a successful flash in recovery? Do you see the bootanimation?

It flashs the files and all but it gets into a bootloop. I see the costum bootanimation of the ROM, but it keeps playing and it won't start up. After some time the screen goes black, but it's not off, because if I hold down power it won't turn on so I have to pull battery.

Your ROM name seems to show that it is a recent build. A quick search around, the last official FNV ROM I see was uploaded in September. The Gerrit, Github, Twitter, and threads here and on another site seem to have been untouched for quite some time.
Of course I am a little out of the loop, so perhaps I am missing something. As devs often post things in IRC, or in other non-official channels. Did you get this ROM from a trusted spot?
That said, it could be a ROM issue perhaps.

install the gapps from the play store. you can flash without them, besides the ones that you cant get from the play store are included. you can try it, or just stay in your bootloop, its your call.

CM10.1 Freezing issue and message not sent error.

Hey guys,
First post here,
i was searching around for my problem, and i haven't found an accurate answer so thought to share my problem and hopefully find an answer.
i am from Canada, Edmonton, and i am with Rogers.
First problem,
i run CM 10.1 and Most the NIGHTLY updates they were butter smooth and works great, until Update number CM-10.120130317 till the current update. All the updates i download, my phone freezes LOT! example of how it freezes , i try to unlock my phone, it freezes . I try to write something it freezes . and sometimes when its on sleep it freezes i can't turn the screen on again! so i always downgrade to CM-10.120130316 to have that stable ROM.
I did the wipe date /factory reset from the ROM manager, and wipe cache and dalvik. and yet the problem is not solve.
So my question is, dose anyone facing the same problem? or it's just me?
Second Problem
am having this beyond annoying notification, where it says my message has not been sent! but my message get's sent and all acts normal. But i always get notification and its never gone. I have screen shoot the problem. Is there a way i can fix this? i've have attached in the thread.
if you guys have any questions or want me to provide some information please do ask.
Looking forward to hear the feedback.
Cheers,
for starts, you're running nightlies and you need to remember that. i'm not an advocate of these, but thats just my opinion. you generally cant run a non-perfected piece of software and repeatedly dirty flash layers of updates on top. you will generally begin to experience bugs that can only be fixed with a full wipe and clean install.
that being said, i would either 1) commit to these cm10.1 nightlies and perhaps even just stick with 1 of them thats working well for you or 2), find a stable 4.1 or 4.2 rom and install after a full wipe. backup first.
There's a warning that these builds are unstable and use them at your own risk. I use cm10.1 20130317 build and it is extremely stable. A few quirks but nothing major. I plan on sticking with it since the 3.4 kernel on the newer nightlies isn't optimized yet, which result is lower battery life.

assuming you have a stable backup to rely on, i would wipe data/factory rest, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and reflash either your current update or (preferably) the one you were running with no problems before. perhaps flash the one listed by a user above that seems to be running well

Interesting.. i have got an idea i will try to do it hopefully by tonight or tomorrow. and i will share the results.
i was thinking to manually download the latest update nightlies instead of my phone update it for me, and then do the wipe thing and then i install it manually, maybe that will fix my problem.
am using G cloud for my backup and it dose his job pretty well. I wanted to use the Titanium backup but it kinda was too complicated for me.
Why they just don't call it "install" instead of Flash then lol?

Why they just don't call it "install" instead of Flash then lol?

avoid using the OTA update feature on your phone. i didnt know you were doing things that way. you'll notice many more bugs and problems that route.
you are on the right path when you say download the actual update (latest release) yourself. make sure you have the gapps to go with it. boot into cwm, wipe data/both cache, flash rom, flash gapps
