About modems - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Under the [ROM] Frankenstein EC05OCE v1 *public beta* I read that I was able to flash modem back to DK28. And I was wondering if it is possible to do on other ROMs like the ACS sydicaderom frozen specifically. If it's in the thread I didn't see it cause I am only able to search on my phone cause I lack Internet in my house. I just wanted to know if it would work, I want to see if it betters my battery life any more than I'm currently getting.
Thanks guys

The ROM will say what specific modems it will work with; most new ones will work with eb13 and ec05 modems. I think frankenstein is by itself with its ability to go back to dk28 (though not sure why you'd want to)

DK28 modem will work on any of the new FROYO ROMs,it even works on DI18...

At some point in the future I will be posting a thread with Odin-flashable modems for DI18, DK28, EB13, and EC05. Maybe all the rest, too. They're not paired with specific builds, and there's no reason it shouldn't be easy for you all to flash between them and decide which gets you the best combination of battery life, signal strength, and data speed - just like on the WinMo devices of old.

I am very interested about this as well.
On the stock phone I was downloading at very high speeds, since flashing to SRF 1.1.1 and Frankenstein I have been DLing at approximately half of my old speeds. It's very disconcerting as I LOVE the SRF in particular.
The concern that I have, and I have searched and looked through the wiki, is where do I find the modems, how do I flash them etc... There doesn't seem to be a lot of direction within the Epic forums for this, although there is a lot of talk about what modems people are using.

Check it out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123103
Also check qbking77's youtube videos on how to flash modems, and a million other things. He's been an awesome resource for the Epic so be sure to thank him...

+1 for qbking77, And I still find DK28 to be the best for me, ee03 was ok, ef02 was really bad at work, great at home. DK28 may not be the fastest, but it stays connected and has the most reliable connection for me, so better battery life...

Another DI18 or DK28 Thread.

Well here I am, tried out DK28 since late december and ive had it till now... Im seeing that we are pretty much getting nowhere without source, and I am starting to get really, really crappy battery life (6 hours). So I'm browsing XDA and I see a lot of DK28 back to DI18 threads and people saying "Oh I'm back on Syndicate, or Baked Snack, and I'm loving it with a good old source rom and custom kernal" so it got me thinking, the Froyo features... "hmm App2Sd... not a big deal to me, i only install a handfull of apps, Flash 10.1.. well **** i cant even get over 200kbps download so im not going to use flash anytime soon", and thats about it (as far as i know)... So, tonight I downloaded the old DI18 tar.md5 and my old syndicate rom for some good old 1.2 GHZ overclocking... But now I'm thinking, is it worth it to downgrade? I really like my gingerbread theme that I have flashed, and well everything else is custom... but is it worth the downgrade? And what about everything being edify nowadays? What do you guys think?
lol, i go back and forth every day practically. the good thing is all these awesome developers give us so many choices and different things to try out. i usually end up back on a custom kernel for the battery life, but i don't think there is any one right answer. maybe when official Froyo drops, that will be the right answer..... but then of course we'll probably have Gingerbread leaks, lmao.
i had to go back, with the bugs and the battery life.. just wasn't worth it to me. syndicate and dI18 are fine for now, froyo is on its way. IMO Retro is in!
I couldn't go back. I love how snappy my phone is on ext4 and I love froyo. I don't see the bugs that people talk about. Sure every os had bugs but its not bad at all. In the end though its all up to in and what you want.

Yeah, retro is cool! The funny thing is we're only talking 3 months old here, haha.
Well I decided to bit the bullet and I'm back on Syndicate... Now I hope Samsung gets their stuff together and releases their source soon :/
I switched back to Syndicate Rom few days ago liking it so far.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who experienced calling reliability on DK28. Sometimes it will dial (or appear to be dialing) but with no sound. This highly annoying when you're just trying to make a quick phone call.

I think its a bug and you can toggle speakerphone as a workaround.
Maybe I'll try it if I go back to DK28.

Yeah, the toggling trick seemed to work... minor bug really. I just haven't been able to get really good battery life on DK28.
DK28 to EC05
So, XDA rocks, but I'm stuck.
I've got DK28.
What is "flash" versus using Odin?
Is the Samsung cable REALLY that awful? I have not one computer that is recognizing the phone.
I don't want to lose my data. What are my options?
How can I get to EC05 now? How can I get comfortable "flashing" around without losing my data? What does that mean? I mean all data. Apps on home screens, apps etc.
Thanks! I hope you can point me to the right steps to just get my phone back to normal stock.
REALLY would appreciate a nice set of consolidated definitions.
Thanks!
Its not that hard but you can save all your data using rom manager!
Stop necro'ing threads, people.
Well, at least I learned that "necro" is now a verb. Awesome!

Anybody else still using di18 eclair?

Just curious to see how many people are still using eclair on there epics?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I've seen posts by 1-2 people who still do because they like not having some of the bluetooth bugs Froyo introduces and maybe a few other reasons. I myself held off on installing DK28 and EB13 and waited all the way for EC05. I'm overall happy with it although it's not perfect. I can definitely notice better performance and of course important (to me) new features and apps. And the big GPS fix. To each their own. Eclair was smooth and stable, whatever else was wrong with it.

Just to check some issues I Odin'd back to DI18 just to have OTA start downloading immediately. I have been trying custom ROMs since DK28 and now find after EC05 OTA my 3G has never been so fast. Seems much faster than manually Odining the modem.
Do you BONSAI?
My wifes still has di18. She wont upgrade cause shes afraid she would lose her Angry Birds saved game. Seriousley.

The quickest ROM out there...

Since opinions run rampant around these parts, I figured I'd ask for the hell of it. As for me, when I first made the progression to 2.2, I tried ViperROM but I didn't like some of the 2.2 features, so I switched back to 2.1. Eventually I came back to 2.2 and was running Syndicate ROM (pre Frozen) and was quit happy with it, then something randomly crashed and someone suggested that I try Bonsai instead. I made the switch (Syndicate 3.1 at the time) and it was wildly faster, and since then I've stayed with them up to 4.1. At the moment though, I've got a corrupted system again (due to my own screwing around), so I'm looking to start my phone from scratch and flash something again, so I wanted to see if anyone can suggest anything different...and why I should. Yes, I know I can just go try it myself, but I figured a poll and get the opinion of the collective could persuade me into which direction I should go, and as I said, why I should. I figure others have done the same as me where they went from one ROM to another, so what made you switch and/or stay with the one you're running now.
For me, battery life isn't a huge concern...I gave up on a phone lasting me more than 8hrs of steady use since the Treo days. I want a stupid fast and snappy ROM that has either lots of features or is stripped and easily upgraded to the features I want. I'm a texting and music streaming whore, constantly on messageboards and I want stability and speed within the OS itself, using BT, crashless when using apps like internet, games, etc. I forgot to put Bonsai on the list, but either way...throw your .02 at me.
Midnight zips around, and with the BYOR version has almost nothing on it...
I love that it gives you the option almost to customize every single aspect without adding too much bulk
They both have BOYR, but I had to edit it out to make it fit in the box...I have no idea what BOYR or Journaling does for me though compared to Bonsai that I'm running now.
Frozen is a really fast rom. I went back to stock ec05 for a couple days to bug test an issue I was having then went back to srf 1.1 again and it is the best. I hear their next release is going to be nothing short of AMAZING. EVEN BONSAI WON'T BE ABLE TO TOUCH IT WITHIN 500 YARDS. Well until acs does......... srf is the best

I somehow forgot to add it to the list, mostly because I was going off of active threads here and forgot that they've moved to their own website instead. I tried to edit the OP, but it wouldn't let me add Bonsai to the poll that I had created. I'm still running Bonsai (corrupted now) so I'm trying to get a feel if I should try something else and why.
I've never tried SRF as I made the switch to Bonsai right before Frozen came out, so maybe I should reconsider Syndicate again. I still don't completely agree w/ Bonsai's almost pretentious choice to leave a forum that enabled them to even to themselves on the map, but that's for a different thread that has already been created. Also, it seems Tmillar has enlisted the ACS team in an effort to get TV-Out working, and as far as I know, it'll only work on ACS's ROMs.
SFR is the best.

I'm admittedly DEV ignorant about how things work, but I was reading the blog about how Bonsai is being blocked by Sprint's network. Unless I'm completely missing something, I remember Syndicate ROM's mentioning something about taking all the Sprint tracking stuff out of it's custom ROM, so does that mean Bonzai still has the Sprint tracking stuff in it, and is that why they're able to block people from coming to your site via the phone?

No no no. I'm using Bonsai right now. I should have been more specific. I meant on the poll. But it's nice to hear you guys are busy on Bonsai.
For those replying, please vote in the poll as well.
For any Admin that might be reading this, is there a possibility to add Bonsai to the poll since I missed it.
Grassyass.
I just noticed that there are people who clicked more than one ROM, messing up the few results on the poll and the whole point of this thread. All these views, and only a handful of votes.
Don't listen to jbadboy he's always talked a lot of crap about bonsai for some reason. I guess he can do better himself. Lol. He can name it bad boys rom.

They are in the Development section, except for Bonsai, you can find that one in my signature below.
I'm using ACS SFR, with the genocide kernel.
It is quick. But still has some little qwerks that I've just given up on(most all related to the browser).
I would try Bonsai, But I don't want to get on to, and participate on another website/forum for just one dev/rom. I already have enough forums. But I am curious as to what happened to the other dev's; ie viper, nova, etc... and it seems like most the one available are based on acs sfr.
Speed ASC, stability Bonsai and battery life Midnight Rom.

I'm running Syndicate Frozen at the moment, but when I was on Syndicate (pre the current Frozen that is out now) and switched to Bonsai 3.1, Bonsai was far quicker at that time.
I'm getting around 1800's in Quadrant, so maybe after the next Bonsai update comes out, maybe I'll try it again.

[HELP!!!] Modem Broken?!

Hey guys, I think I have a problem. I turned on my phone this morning and my phone would not connect to the service. Now it's been going in and out all day since I'm not at home right now and I'm in a very low connection zone. However, if I go into settings, it says my Baseband and Hardware versions are unknown. Is that because is hasn't connected to any internet because of my location, or will it forever be like that unless I odin a new modem? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
I should also mention for some reason when waking up my battery was only at 10% even though it was on a charger.
What modem are you on? That sort of instability is what brought me back to EE03 from EF02 and EF10. I don't have time for that garbage. I need to know I can get connection and that service areas are the only things that might hinder it.
Sounds like u need to use odin my friend. Try the ee03 modem. Best modem for me out of all of them.
"The greatest respect you can earn is self respect" Louie Simmons
This happened to me a few times on both EF02 and EF10. I usually fix it by booting into recover and wiping cache 3x.
The modem issue is one of the main reasons GB is taking so long to release. The modems seem to crash randomly in low signal areas. If you pull the battery, reinstall and reboot it usually comes back but will blow up again real soon. The best thing to do is either Odin in the same or different modem. The only issue I saw with EC05 is the GPS data gets stale and requires a reboot to get a lock occasionally. Otherwise I don't think that one crashes like the GB modems.
I'm probably gonna Odin the EE03 modem because I hear that has pretty good battery life for Gingerbread. However, I'm also starting to consider SRF 1.2 again, but I have some questions then:
I'd probably odin back to stock EC05 first btw (w/ root) can anyone provide a link?
Also, i hear EE03 is a really good modem for SRF so I plan on doing that.
So last question is: is the kernel stable, or would you recommend flashing a different one? If so, which kernel? Thanks so much guys.

a couple of questions about modems/radios

So after flashing a couple of ICS roms i really like calkulin's ICS and will stick with it. But as soon as i went from GB to ICS roms, my signal strength and service in certain areas has gone to *&^%.. Im getting LOS more too.
I determined that it was time to update modems(i was still running el29)
I tried fh23 and FI03 and FI03 seems to be the better out of the two, but my buddy is still on el29 and seems to get better service regularly(i put him on the same version of calkulin's rom as well)
My questions are as follows:
1. What exactly does a modem do?
2. why does sprint release so many, and is there that much of a difference?
3. how do i find out which is the best modem for me?
4. (sounds like a stupid question but here goes) What is the difference between a modem and a radio?
Thanks!!

A modem is the same as the radio. They help bridge the software and the hardware for your radio components. There were so many modems because there was a bunch of leaks we have gotten. You find out which ones best by flashing them. Each phone as well as each area can be different. So you just have to find out.

Thanks for the crazy-fast reply!
I have cracked open quite a few e4gt phones and they all look the same and parts always swap(data ports,camera,glass)..I don't get it..
Is it possible that, collectively, we have made a couple of assumptions only because of the amount of variables(and outcomes) between users that are involved?
I just refuse to believe that these modems are location specific.
I do, however, think they could be hardware-specific being that the e4gt is made in a couple different locations...But, does anybody come across a modem that just DOESN'T WORK on their e4gt?
I believe some of the modems are actually the same. They are just called different because it was a later build date. But it was the same modem. And yes I have had a few just not work. The fd series gave me horrible reception. I'm talking not being able to make one call. Then in the same place moments after I would flash the el29 or fc15 and it would be full bars again.

Is there any thread in which people discuss this topic a little further? I'm interested in getting to the bottom of all this..I'm about to go to sprint right now to see what modem their new phones are running! Also, i have a GF in los angeles..I'll have her do the same..She got her e4gt about a month ago and hers was running fh13 out of the box.

install FI03. It fixes a lot of battery and 4g speed issues. best modem since EL29.
Oh..i just read your signature..Is fb21 still the modem you are using? Why did you choose this one? Why not FI03? Isn't that the newest? Have all of these people really flashed all of these modems or is that overkill? Is my analysis of all of this overkill? LOL
I use FF18 and that works quite well in my area. I haven't tried the newest leak yet but I might soon.

I am on FI03 and its the best for signal strength and data speed I have ever had.
If you do not get the same service as your buddy it might not be the modem firmware that is the problem. I was having lots of signal issues and my friend was not. I finally took the phone to sprint and had them run a signal check on it and it failed. I got a replacement phone since mine was still under warranty. The refurbished phone running under FI03 is getting great signal where the other was barely getting anything. So it might not be a firmare issue but a hardware one.
Sprint will charge you $35 for the test.
