Block 9016, 3 second fix. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see people coming up with all kinda crazy ways to block text from 9016 when involving vm. Download this, use handcent, etc.
Here's the easiest way to block it.
Send a text to:9999
Message: block 9016
hit "send"
You will get a text saying all messages are now blocked from that number. This works for any and all numbers.
Example:
Text to: 9999
Message: block 3152921234
hit "send"
To unblock any number:
Text to: 9999
Message: unblock 9016 or 3152921234 (example number from above)
Sprint will send you a confirmation text with each text you send. It doesn't matter what Rom you have or if you change Roms, it stays in effect even if you switch phones.
Enjoy!

No, I have used it for a long time and never had any charges. You can also access your blocked list on sprint.com on your account.

Does visual voicemail still work after blocking these texts?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

Yeah. I used red light without issues

Yes voicemail app works. This is a great find!
Thanks so much OP

Perfect because Sprint is blocking it on their end so we have no annoyance. No more apps or third party anything.

YW. My wife works for sprint and we have been using this for a LONG time. I couldn't believe no one knew of it.
Glad I could help, enjoy and spread the word.

Omg after all them text this simple fix solve the problem. Thanks a lot.

I tried this and it said I'm blocking them, but I still get the texts when I get a voicemail.

I still get them as well and I am blocking it through Sprint, with SPC and with Go SMS. They still come through. Even on a stock ROM.

I dunno what you are doing wrong, but it should work. Maybe log onto your sprint account and check to see if they are blocked?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App

Not doing anything wrong. It just doesn't work for everyone for some reason. My girlfriend gets the texts from 9016 on her bone stock non-rooted evo as well. Even after sending the block text to 9999 and going on the Sprint site to block them.
I get them no matter what ROM I use, and the Sprint site shows that's a blocked number for texts.

Thanks for the info. I did this and have not gotten a text from 9016 since.

This fix didn't work for me, I had my friend who was over test it out and I still got the txt message....

It's not rocket science. If you follow the directions it should work. If it's not working it must be on Sprint's end.
Sorry

Didn't work for me, either. I really think whether the fix works or not depends on the ROM. I'll just stick with Google Voice.......thanks anyway.

Worked for me! Great find, thanks!

9016 VM Texts
I also get the blocked successfully but does block. Also checked on website and 9016 was in block numbers.
Edit: In doing some research I found that people switching from Instinct which has visual voice mail(I switched) to the standard voice mail app which my evo has, this is a problem. It doesn't happen on all roms but when I am on certain roms(Warm Z) it becomes a problem. I also heard of another way by updating profile sending voice mail then checking but that doesn't work. Any Ideas?

[Q] *86 Voice Mail notification on NON-SENSE ROMS

OK I know this has been brought up a few times in the CM threads. I get this ghost VM notification on CM6 and on all the nightlys. I also am getting this ghost VM notification on the MIUI rom. I do NOT get this notification on ANY sense ROMs I have tried.
I read this Forum everyday as much as I can. I have tried search. Every thing that comes up close to what I have going on doesn't seem to get fully answered as to why this is coming up on some phones and not others.
I flashed CM6 and a few nightlys on my Wifes phone and She has NEVER received the *86 VM notification.
I am always updated to the most current PRL, PRI and NV. Nothing I have tried will clear this message. On the CM6 ROM I can hit the clear button under the notification bar and that clears it for a little while but then the damn thing comes back.
Can anyone explain this and offer up a FIX. I know I'm not the only one.
Any one have any help on this?

Thank you Brutus for the input.
I know all about that part of the set-up. This DOES NOT get rid of the Ghost notification. I still will get a notification that I have a voice mail (and YES I have checked to make sure my VM's are cleared out).
Just FYI I use google voice when I am on CM6 or nightlys. Google Voice works great but still will not clear the VM notification.

Dont skip my post I am going to say two diffrent things . First normaly you get the notification because you received a voicemail. The stock rom has a code writen in to block that text so that you dont see the notification when you receive a voicemail.
Now Jetdr I will try to answer your question here. I think your voicemail hasnt been provisioned. Click on your VVM app and hit menu, when you hit menu you should have 3 options, compose, search and settings. If you have a 4th option that says unsent or undelivered click it. When VVM sets up, it automaticly sends a voicemail to the server to setup your VVM. If that message doesnt get sent then it probably never will. You will have to uninstall the VVM.Apk and reinstall the app. One time when I was setting up CM6 I had to install the voicemail apk several times before I got it to provision correctly. If it doesn provision a minute or two after you install it then its not going to. Not sure if this is whats causing your ghost voicemail text but I am thinking this is it. The easiest way to tell is to just click the vvm app and see if it shows four options or three. It should only show three.
If you are using google voice you dont still have the sprint VVM installed do you? If you dont have the sprint VVM installed then I am not sure whats causing your issue considering my directions to fix your issue is in regardes to the sprint vvm app.
Hope that helps.
I've tried all that and more.... nothing fixes it. I've concidered calling sprint but don't want to ruin my insurance..

Twilk... thanks so much for the response. I did all you suggested and I flashed back over to the newest MIUI ROM and I still have the VM notification. I made sure I didn't have any voice mails before I flashed. The notification will not clear even with the settings selected to not show.
Initially it has the *86 number but when I change the VM settings to my number it of course then comes up in the drop down box with my number.
The same thing happens on CM ROMs.

My notification says 4 voicemails... so I'm wondering if when I rooted my phone I had voicemails.. I don't really listen to my voicemails.. i'd rather just receive a text from someone... I just wish that I had made sure to clear my box before I rooted.. not sure if this is the reason for it... but it doesn't seem like there are many users with this problem. I'm sort of anti-twitter or I would ask cyanogen myself.. this is soo annoying! Especially since I hate voice mail to begin with.. I don't read my bills much, but I think sprint charges for voicemail.. anyway I can cancel my voicemail service? Also they charge me to keep a spending limit.. I want to call sprint and ask to cancel my voicemail..

Anybody ever figure this one. Or do we just clear the message on each reboot?
Clear dalv. and cache, then change *86 to your mobile number then block 9016 from your sprint account.I added youmail and mine works perfect.I get txt and VM very quick. If the person that left you the voice mail is in your contacts it will show them as leaving the VM and you can just tap on there pic and it will play the ones they left you.
And I have no phantom notifications or anything odd.

Unable to receive text from a certain number

Hi, I've tested/re-tested and have found that while I am able to send a text message to a certain number, I am unable to receive any from that number. I've done a hard reset on the phone and even called the sprint hotline (who were unable to figure it out). The sprint people saw all the texts on the server that are destined for my phone from that number but I did/do not receive them.
I've used handcent as well as the native messaging app but no cigar.
Does anyone have any insight into what may be happening here.
Is it the persons phone who is trying to send it? If u can send and receive it doesn't sound like your phone.

I use google voice integration and had this problem before. form some reason gv marked my wife's number as spam and blocked her calls and texts. I couldn't even call or text her either. so if you're using gv check the spam filter.
Do know what kind of phone they're using? Its possible they need a hard reset...
We had a lady in yesterday who couldn't send texts to 5 different people, a hard reset fixed it for her.

I did a hard reset on the phone and the problem remains. Yes, I do have google voice on the phone but I think after the hard reset, the application was removed. Would my number still be blocked in the spam filter? I'll check the voice.google.com site out.

The are google voice settings that persist after the app is removed, definitely check out the desktop settings. This sounds like an issue on that line not on your epic.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
As it turns out, the issue was on Sprint's side. They had escalated the issue to their networking department on Friday. On Sunday all of a sudden all of the missing texts started pouring into the Epic 4g. Apparently the engineers had reset something to get this to work although they haven't contacted me about it. So far from what I can see, the problem is resolved now.
The problem happened again. The Epic 4g Touch is no longer getting messages from the Nexus S. Messages from all other numbers show up.
I'm getting tired of this since it takes 2 escalations at Sprint to fix this problem (Networking dept). Since we just bought the phone, I think it's just best to return it.

Recurrent Text After Restart & LOS

I've noticed that I keep getting this text message as stated on the title heading. I want to know if anyone else is getting this and if someone knows what it means.
this is it:

I have this message at least 15 times in my sms inbox.
Wow... I'm thank god I'm not the only one...
Edit: slightly different, same format. I've only gotten it once or twice, don't recall the relation to LOS... Though I rarely get them.

I'm only relating it to LOS because I'm paying attention to the occurrence and it seems to correlate. actual cause and a direct relationship is still a question.
I have had mutiple LOS and I have not seen a text like that. I get texts from my wife multiple times though. This is getting weirder by the day.
Driving me crazy. I get LOS but not crazy texts, I get missed texts and my friends get texts I send 3 or 4 days later.

Whatever shortcode "mine was 8737" your getting go to sprint.com and block the code or *2 and they will block it for you...
Edit: Actually that didn't work so its not going over the network.
yeah, mine is from the same short code.
question: do of you having this issue also have visual voicemail not working?
i think it's related to voice mail or google voice mail.
i'm getting the same thing.
Also got it when i was on TP2 and EVO.

Blocked the code and still got the same short code...So blocking the code as well as checking my GV messages and not getting the code its something on the phone. Haven't ran a log yet so have no idea whats causing it but didnt start till I used LOSKERNAL.
FIXED!
i found how to fix this and the reason. basically the issue has nothing to do with LOS, other than that is when sprint voicemail is trying sync after the service restarts. i posted the fix for the problem here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306721
It is voice mail related. I use GV myself. I don't know how or why it happens or how it is related to voice mail but it is. It happens only soon after a restart for me.

Anonymous mms

About once a week I get an anonymous mms. I feel as if someone is checking up on me or something, it's always really early in the morning and it's a blank. Anyone else get these?
I think I've seen this but it just replaced the name of an existing contact after a few seconds the name/pic went back to normal.
Never. I get some advertisement about buying junk cars though.
I get the same anonymous mms every few days. I just delete it and move on. Never looked into what it might be.

I have never received one although I get some spam texts (I wish the do not call list included texts) but I have heard of this before with landlines ringing at like 4am and it had something to do with the system maintenance on cell phones IDK maybe you got a weird tower near your home I really don't know. I do know you can mark certain MMS and SMS senders as spam whenever I get a spam text that's what I do.

[Q] Stop texts from breaking up

Stop texts from breaking up, How?
Every time I get a long text message it's broken up into multiple messages, it's annoying because sometimes they dont all come in at the same time, or they do and i think i have a **** ton of msgs lol. It's the same on the stock messaging app and google's messaging app. Is there a setting somewhere that I've missed? It's happened with incoming msgs from iphones and android phones on different carriers.

There is little you can do, it is the carrier of the sender that is doing it. Many carriers limit the number of characters you can have per text. So if they go over it gets broken into multiple text messages. It is not an issue on your end.
I also hate this.. When I had att I didn't have this problem..
Wasn't there an option to send messages bigger then a # of characters through MMS instead of using normal split SMS?

Yes I think there is. This is for sending messages though. When receiving a message it depends on how the senders app sends it.

Easy fix, just make hangouts your default SMS app...
Otherwise you're at the mercy of the carrier.

Just a guess, but I'd say it's likely due to being Google's app and having tighter integration with the framework than carrier based bloat.

Just tried this sending myself a very long text via Wi-Fi on Sprint messaging app; it does work to combine the messages without converting to MMS.
Like others have said variables may limit results. My wife is also on my Sprint account using an iPhone 5 and her messages to me split from what I can see; don't know if hers from me split or not. Cross platform texting hasn't been reliable.
Have you tried the setting?
KLPFL said:

Initially failed to Motorola Photon Q. Had found the setting and enabled it and rebooted the phone; split the long message into 4 out-of-order texts. Did the System settings/System update/Update Profile on both phones and it works both ways. Sent the same text to to the iPhone 5 and it split. I've asked my wife to update her profile but she's busy; will try again later.
On my phone, had to defrost Samsung DM Service and reinstall Sprint Zone and let it update and opt out of EUL anonymous data sharing, agree to terms before I could update the profile.
BTW, combining the long text and sending a short text after that may have the shorter message arriving first. I actually sent an inquiry after getting notification that the long text test message had been forwarded back to me. The notice and inquiry went through before I got the combined message sent first.
I don't know if it happened to me or not.. never pay attention to it....gotta test later to see if if it's the same problem
How long is long. . I tested by sending to myself. But don't know if it is long enough.
My test text message consists of 80 words which was splitting into 4 text messages. Seems to be working between two different Android phones but still unknown if profile update will get it working cross-platform to/from iPhone. The Sprint iPhone 5 on the account seems to frequently have inability to sync texts with Android over Wi-Fi. Sometimes, it's just texting in general that the iPhone 5 loses.
For testing, just kept using the same message forwarded until it was received by both phones without the split.
May be wrong but sending it to yourself may only be an indication your phone can combine. It takes the profile update to tell Sprint you wish to use the combining method which appears to be an exception to every phone. Being on Gingerbread and CM for a long time, this is the first time I've seen the combining feature. About time! Hope it continues to work without frequent profile updates then broke again/update again.
This doesn't make sense. .i sent to my wife iPhone.. she received one full message but when she sent to me using the same text message it broke up to 4...wth

Did you perform the profile update on both phones? Does the Sprint iPhone have the combine text option for texts?
I haven't tried the profile update and retest with the iPhone 5 yet. Haven't seen the the settings menu on the iPhone 5, either. I think that phone is still on iOS7; afraid the update would result in early upgrade.
Not on the iPhone just the note 4
Open the stock messaging app and go to text message settings and make sure auto combination is checked.
