My friend at work wants his phone(dinc, same as mine) rooted and the crap he doesnt use removed. If the bootloader is still s-on from a z4 root temp root will the phone spaz out? Also will removing any crap from the phone make it not take the gingerbread update? Sorry for the semi-noobish question, i just dont know.....

As far as the gingerbread update question, not sure, we'll all have to wait and see. I'm guessing you'll have to go back to stock to get it. I remember with the 2.2 OTA that stock rooted phones would get the OTA message, reboot and do nothing, but the message would continually pop up. I don't see the gingerbread OTA coming soon either (soon being the next month or two).
If the temp root gives him read/write permissions to /system, I would recommend creating a directory called /system/backup or something, and then move the apk's from /system/app to that directory; or rename the apk's to .bak (ex: CityID.apk to CityID.bak), and then if it is needed just rename it back to .apk. I wouldn't just delete them, and personally I like/do the creating a new directory thing.
The s-on thing wouldn't affect this, so as long as the temp root gives read/write permissions to /system you should be able to do what I've mentioned above.

Okay. I tried renaming apps. The phone would reboot whenever it would try to sleep. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I'd rename them back to their original names. Have you used/good with ADB at all? If the /system has r/w permission, then using ADB to do all of this is a lot easier. You'll need the Android SDK installed to be able to use the ADB command.
I'm thinking that if it is a temp root thing, doesn't it revert back to stock after a reboot or something like that?

No familiarity with adb, and yes, all apps were renamed upon reboot. Kinda like i never had r/w permission. We dont have a computer at work and bloat freezer makes the phone reboot too. :/

What steps did you take in rooting the phone? I'd recommend rooting with unrevoked.

Sounds like the temp root thing isn't going to allow what you're trying to do. You'd have to root it with Unrevoked.

Have you tried the freeze function of Titanium? not sure if it would work in this instance, but worth a try...
Cant use unrevoked. No computer to run it at work. And my laptops useless (5min to load google chrome) :/ so ill give him temp root, and set him up with setcpu. Freezing doesnt work at all and makes the phone reboot.

There's really no computer you could use it on? Unrevoked only takes like 5-10 minutes. I don't know anything about temp root, everyone seems to use unrevoked forever.

Permanent root is needed, otherwise it'll give you issues, since it'll give you temp root only. Setcpu won't be able to access root on a reboot, and will cause issues.

Hello, I've searched this forum for around two days trying to find out if I can still help my friend re-root his evo... He was rooted running hardware #0003 and decided to unroot in order to return phone to sprint for the evo shift. after playing around with the shift at the store he said it's not worth giving up his evo.. now he wants to re-root his evo however sense he has been unrooted he accepted sprint's latest ota 3.70 and now for some reason we can't reroot his phone. we used unrevoked 3 to root it the first time. Is there a way to reroot his phone after accepting the new ota from sprint?? Any kind of advice would be of great help. Thank for any input that anyone can provide. btw, he never tried any new roms... he still has the stock rom.
I was able to root a new Evo with the 3.70 OTA update last week using unrevoked 3.32 without any problem at all.
Unrevoked will root 3.7 phone hw v1 2 3 or 4 and all hboots

This is great news guys I really appreciate the quick response...I almost forgot, one more question... does it matter if we rooted his phone on a 32 bit windows system and unrooted with a 64 bit windows system? Your /system/app files aren't stored on the SD Card, they're inside the phone. Unless you're on A2SD.
How did you delete it at? Using a file browser on the phone itself or on your PC? How's the phone/apps behaving?
Is the device S-ON right now or S-OFF? If is S-OFF all you need to do is re-install recovery and super user app. I'm on my phone so I can't post the link for you but go to unrEVOked.com, select the EVO and then unrEVOked forever. Scroll down the page and you'll see a link for ClockworkMod recovery and the su app. Place the recovery file on the root of your SD card and boot into bootloader(volume down & power). The device will find the PC36IMG and you'll be able to update your recovery image to clockwork. Now that your set, flash the su app via recovery and your once again fully rooted.

I followed these steps and still no system/app files. btw, I formatted my SD card using my computer... I don't quite know how much a difference it would make but I remember using my computer. Any other suggestions?

I'm not sure what you mean. System/app directory isn't on the SD card so if your looking for it on your card you won't find it. As for the instructions I provided, yes these steps are done on your device. All newer versions of unrEVOked do the same thing as unrEVOked forever, Permanent S-OFF. There's really no reason why you'll ever need your pc again as long as you have the files for recovery and su app on your SD card.
I forgot to mention, after formatting your SD card the device will automatically re create the needed directories on the card. Some folders will pop back up instantly while others will appear once you've opened the app associated with the folder. An example would be the DCIM folder. It will only appear once you open the camera application.
Ok cool, l just remember seeing system and app and I don't remember how I got there... I know that sounds pretty stupid but that's what happened... so my concern is if I need to get back there, I want to know where to find it on my phone.. I really appreciat you taking time to try to help. So looks like I need to be looking somewhere on my phone in which I have no idea of where to start..sorry about that...I guess I need to keep researching and messing with my phone more. It's located in the root directory. Another words, you shouldn't be looking in any folder/directory. Open your file explorer and instead of entering a directory such as SD card just locate system. Within system you'll see system/app. It looks like this

okay so my question is, im on the stock rom(2.3.4) rooted with HBOOT.92 and obviously have root acces, i want to get rid of a bunch of bloatware, vcast,app sharing ect ect.
in the past i had a htc eris and used root explorer and deleted all the bloat from the system/app folder and seemed to work flawless. i tried that but they are still there, then used titanium pro to uninstall them but no go, then i created a filter name "bloat" and melted it. well now the app are uninstalled but still are in my apps screen. i then tried to use root explorer again and they are not to be found in the system/app folder, i have a backup so io am not worried.
any suggestions on how to get rid of these bloatware, or could you recommend a rom low on memory usage that is close to stock rom, or maybe some nice visualized roms that are not to big on the memory.
This might sound obvious but did you reboot after deleting the apps?

Get S-Off then try removing the apps again.

You dont need s-off to remove apps just root. Deleting the apks with root explorer should work.

Or Titanium Backup, make sure busybox is installed, there's a busybox installer app free in the Market.

tried to melt, delete, delete via recovery(cant mount system, aborted) will try with busybox installed.

I had this happen when 2.3 first came out, and I went to delete the apps and they'd just reappear on reboot. Installing busybox fixed my issue then.

well i think i may have figured it out, used this app System App remover, couldn't uninstall anything but disabled all the stuff i wanted to, then used root explorer to delete apk's in system/app.
installed busy box but didn't notice anything different.
Just flash a new rom. If you want something like stock or better I suggest any rom by Heyitslou, skyraider, or newtoroot sense 3.0 or lower.

you don't need to do any of that.
Using root explorer:
Delete the .apk files from BOTH system/app AND data/app.
Reboot into recovery.
wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache
Reboot
Be patient as your phone rebuilds the cache and dalvik cache. Once you get to the unlock screen, wait another minute or two.

Try freezing device manager in titanium backup.
If that doesnt do the trick, you may have to manually locate the update on your phones storage and remove it. root explorer or ghost commander can be used to do this... Just be careful and always do a nandroid backup before making any system level changes.

When you say you are going to do it manually, do you mean you are going to remount system/app as rw from ro and delete the device manager?

Because a lot of us are running custom roms that run way better than stock and don't come with all the bloatware.
My wife allowed the 2.3.4 update to run before letting me root for her. Now, she desperately wants root, but doesn't want to lose her application data (mostly she's concerned about Angry Birds I think).
I tried the temp root for the Rezound which uses zergrush and was able to get SU access via ADB and was able to momentarily install su, busybox and SuperUser, however, TiBu had a bunch of problems. A few times is wasn't able to get su access. Others it reported no hypershell. I did get everything going once, but the batch backup died at the first application.
Has anyone found a method that allows temp root on the dinc2 2.3.4? I'm perfectly willing to do the downgrade to get s-off/unlock the phone, but the wife wants her data.
Why don't you just back up the entire sdcard? My wife was big on plantz vs zombies and a couple of other games.. I just copied the whole Sdcard.. downgraded and rooted.. replaced everything back into the Sdcard once it was rooted and all I had to do then was redownload the application. All the save data was still there..

To my knowledge, .android-secure doesn't just copy to a fresh ROM. If I can't find a way to temp root, I may have to try that though.

Thanks, I've been through that thread several times and the old method doesn't work on 2.3.4.
Bump once more in the probably vain hope that someone has been successful.
Earlier this week my Sensation 4g died. I bought a Note 2. Little did I know that there were issues with it that I and others have with it, ie: no easy immediate way to do app to sd for instance. Another thing I wanted was to be able to add or take away data from installed apps by connecting the phone to a computer via usb and accessing the files that way, which again doesn't happen without some work.
Since then I have rooted the phone (according to the download mode screen, which says: current binary and system status is custom.
I have left everything stock except for the rooting part and installed Superuser and SuperSU and then tried to run Titanium Backup (free) when it said 'could not access root using \something\something\su command".
I have tried several other apps and methods of trying to do what I want (from the first paragraph) but none have succeeded either due lack of documentation (and I didn't know how to do a certain step or fix something) or it just didn't work.
So where am I at now? I have factory reset my phone and am now honestly not sure where to go or what to do from here. I've Googled and Googled but nothing quite seems to be able to fix what I need and if it does then it has the lack of documentation and can't help me.
Any thoughts or guides or something that anyone could post/link to? Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken but kernels don't deal with being able to save apps to sd. I could be wrong since I don't dabble in android dev. Thanks though.

What way did you use to root (Cf_auto_root, Stock-root injected, etc)?
Does your phone still have exynos_exploit or did your phone come with that "OTA Update" pre installed?
What SD card are you using?
What rom/kernal are you trying to run?
Most of the time, in this particular forum, its seems best to just ask what your trying to accomplish within the various rom/kernal thread...
Like lets say im on Stick injected rom/kernal without extsd2internalsd (apps2sd) setup and lets say I want to go to Jedi Master 9.... I would then go to Jedi Master 9 thread and ask for help on how to effectively apply that rom with ExtSd2internalsd support from my current setup, and wait for the OP or seniors to reply... also while "patiently waiting" I would read/search through the hundreds of pages looking for answers/insights to my particular process... if needed might go to my own root process thread and ask for advice on how to get to jedi master 9

Thanks. I did answer that I am running everything stock at the moment, just rooted, no kernel or rom. I have an 8gb class 4 microsd card. My root method was cf auto root. I also stated what I was hoping to achieve also (in my first paragraph). Hopefully this helps.
Oh, if possible I'd like the easiest way to remove or disable system apps like chat on or some of the tmobile stuff. I tried a couple different methods with that too but couldn't quite get it all to work.
I tried the qtadb app but couldn't get my device to be seen by the program on the computer and i tried that app because I had no idea where to start with regular adb, its been a long time since i've done any of this stuff.
To remove or disable system apps I use root uninstaller, sometimes it won't delete system apps on the first try just exit the app go back and do it again second attemt will do, for your data problem I'll try root browser or root Explorer

Are you sure your rooted (root checker)? I honestly havent heard of anyone else being unable to install rooted apps (unless they werent rooted (those people generally rerooted to solve that issue)

Well it turns out you can download and install apps requiring root but they just wont run correctly, if at all. I know because after my factory reset, i downloaded and ran 2 root checker apps, both of which said I no longer have root or something. So now I'm just going through the rooting process again.
Edit: I'm not rooted again, as checked by 2 root confirmation apps. Now to try to get TB running and remove bloatware.
Edit 2: Great success! I got TB to work, bought PRO and have just frozen everything i dont need or dont use.

Well it turns out you can download and install apps requiring root but they just wont run correctly, if at all. I know because after my factory reset, i downloaded and ran 2 root checker apps, both of which said I no longer have root or something. So now I'm just going through the rooting process again.
Edit: I'm not rooted again, as checked by 2 root confirmation apps. Now to try to get TB running and remove bloatware.
