[Q] root after sprint 3.7 ota? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I've searched this forum for around two days trying to find out if I can still help my friend re-root his evo... He was rooted running hardware #0003 and decided to unroot in order to return phone to sprint for the evo shift. after playing around with the shift at the store he said it's not worth giving up his evo.. now he wants to re-root his evo however sense he has been unrooted he accepted sprint's latest ota 3.70 and now for some reason we can't reroot his phone. we used unrevoked 3 to root it the first time. Is there a way to reroot his phone after accepting the new ota from sprint?? Any kind of advice would be of great help. Thank for any input that anyone can provide. btw, he never tried any new roms... he still has the stock rom.

I was able to root a new Evo with the 3.70 OTA update last week using unrevoked 3.32 without any problem at all.

Unrevoked will root 3.7 phone hw v1 2 3 or 4 and all hboots

unrevoked worked great for me too

This is great news guys I really appreciate the quick response...I almost forgot, one more question... does it matter if we rooted his phone on a 32 bit windows system and unrooted with a 64 bit windows system? Will it effect rerooting or prevent it? Just curious. Thanks all your help. Would like to donate not sure of how to do that either.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Um no that shouldn't matter. Valid question but the app shouldn't be affected by that.
Swyped from my Evo on steroids.

I rooted from a x64 Windows 7 box so I would sat no it does not matter.

That did it! Thanks a bunch Just so happens I was still trying to use unrevoked 3.2. I noticed on my own phone that I don't have any system/app files after I formatted my sdcard, I've looked all through my astrology file manager and still no luck. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks.

Hi guys, just a quick question. I seem to have deleted my system/app file when I formatted my SD card; is there any way to get it back or am I just S.O.L? I've searched for this issue on this forum but no clear info on what my options are at this point. Any advice on what my options are would be great. I appreciate it and thanks.

Your /system/app files aren't stored on the SD Card, they're inside the phone. Unless you're on A2SD.
How did you delete it at? Using a file browser on the phone itself or on your PC? How's the phone/apps behaving?

Is the device S-ON right now or S-OFF? If is S-OFF all you need to do is re-install recovery and super user app. I'm on my phone so I can't post the link for you but go to unrEVOked.com, select the EVO and then unrEVOked forever. Scroll down the page and you'll see a link for ClockworkMod recovery and the su app. Place the recovery file on the root of your SD card and boot into bootloader(volume down & power). The device will find the PC36IMG and you'll be able to update your recovery image to clockwork. Now that your set, flash the su app via recovery and your once again fully rooted.

First of all guys thanks for the help and quick response. It's good to know there's help when you need it. I have s-off and I'm rooted using unrevoked 3.2 can I do all these steps from my phone or only from my laptop?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

I followed these steps and still no system/app files. btw, I formatted my SD card using my computer... I don't quite know how much a difference it would make but I remember using my computer. Any other suggestions?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

I'm not sure what you mean. System/app directory isn't on the SD card so if your looking for it on your card you won't find it. As for the instructions I provided, yes these steps are done on your device. All newer versions of unrEVOked do the same thing as unrEVOked forever, Permanent S-OFF. There's really no reason why you'll ever need your pc again as long as you have the files for recovery and su app on your SD card.

I forgot to mention, after formatting your SD card the device will automatically re create the needed directories on the card. Some folders will pop back up instantly while others will appear once you've opened the app associated with the folder. An example would be the DCIM folder. It will only appear once you open the camera application.

Ok cool, l just remember seeing system and app and I don't remember how I got there... I know that sounds pretty stupid but that's what happened... so my concern is if I need to get back there, I want to know where to find it on my phone.. I really appreciat you taking time to try to help. So looks like I need to be looking somewhere on my phone in which I have no idea of where to start..sorry about that...I guess I need to keep researching and messing with my phone more. I really do appreciate all your help.. you guys are awesome.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

It's located in the root directory. Another words, you shouldn't be looking in any folder/directory. Open your file explorer and instead of entering a directory such as SD card just locate system. Within system you'll see system/app. It looks like this
acct
app-cache
cache
config
data
dev
etc
mnt
proc
root
sbin
sdcard
sys
SYSTEM - app is located here

Cool! It worked thanks.

Deleted APK with Root Explorer but app won't go away!

I have a rooted phone running the GingerVillain ROM. It has some programs I don't want like Mail, Gmail and News And Weather.
I followed the steps to remove the programs with Root Explorer. I.E. Going into System/Apps and mounting R/W. long press on the APK and delete. Boom, program gone..... nope! I went into my menu and it is still there. Even worse, it is still works!
I rebooted the phone and the APK files were there again!
Anybody seen this kind of strange activity before?
If you are still S-ON, it won't work. You need to be S-OFF to delete files from the system partition while the phone is up & running.
I've heard of that. How would I know if I'm S-OFF? If I'm not then how can i set my phone to S-OFF?
Strangely it appears that the file deletes. It only reappears after reboot. I would have thought it wouldn't have deleted at all if it wasn't working correctly.
How to know that? Well, it was just discussed, you're not S-OFF, because you can't delete files from the system partition (it disappears, but it's still there).
And also if you did not do the S-OFF procedure, it won't be S-OFF'd.
Here's the guide how to do it: S-OFF Tutorial

Another way to find out S-ON/OFF is to look into your H-BOOT by turning off your phone, hold down the volume down and switching on. The first line will tell you what it is set to.

Unless you've done the s-off procedure you won't be s-off
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
I found the s-off procedure using alpharev bootable CD as quick and easy as rooting (once I was running a custom rom).
Now I have zapped unwanted apps directly whilst running and also flashed hboot giving me more free memory and a very responsive phone.

And if you don't want to go s-off just delete the files in the Rom zip file before you flash it.

Yes i tried this..The only issue im having with that is for option 1 i cant find trhe corrent driver for my phone ..Im running windows 7 x64 I have the driver that a friend sent me on my home laptop and i remember when it found it..it said froyo 2.2
not the adb driver like its doingon my laptop...so im still searching for the drivers
Option 2 still shows no img or wrong img.
I tried adding a .img to it and a .zip and no luck
For the second option, you have to rename the .zip otherwise it won't read it.
Make sure you have the name correctly as "PB31IMG.zip", sometime I misread the 1 and I or leave an extra space in there.
And your SD card needs to be FAT32 for hboot to read it.

Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I will copy everything to my HD and format to Fat32
and will rename to .zip and will update the outcome. Thanks guys
Okay guys...No luck what so ever...I formated my SD card to fat32. Renamed the file to PB31IMG.zip and PB31IMG.ZIP
Still getting the message with no image, incorrect image.
Im out of ideas

App installation issues

Hey,
When I try to install any application to my phone its giving me an error saying 'could not install on usb or sdcard "
Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?
I've tried rebooting and the whole battery removal deal. My sd card is not set to read only. And applications are installed on the phones memory then I move them to my sdcard if I need to.

That is the name of the recovery.
What ROM is your phone using? Like CM7 or Myns WarmZ?
Also, what app are you trying to install and how are you going about installing it?
I noticed this on another site the other day. http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...on-usb-storage-or-sd-card-problem-on-android/
Hope that helps.
That's the exact problem I am having. Problem is, that file is not in my sd card!
How do I find out what rom I'm using? Its not in setting.. about phone.
I can you my phone is rooted using unrevoked, and I have never changed any rom or thing like that... its just been unrevoked (the latest one) and that's it... then I just install apps. So, the default rom?
And the difference between my problem and the one you posted is that All APPLICATIONS CANT BE installed, not just some... but it's the same error, exactly as it appears on that link above.

What program are you using to view your SD card? As the article suggests, use Root Explorer to search for the file. You may not be able to see "hidden" files using other explorers. Root Explorer is the default ninja app. ;+)
As far as "what ROM," if you've only used unrevoked, yes, you're just on the stock "default" ROM, albeit a rooted stock.
I was using esfile explorer and I did select the option to view hidden files but that didn't show me everything, apparently. I know this because I connected my phone to my pc, view the files from there and then I found this stupid file that causes this error.
I didn't have root explorer and obviously couldn't install it because of the issue in was having.
Thanks for the help everyone! Much appreciated.

It will turn you back to 100% stock, so yes it'll unroot you. You'll have to then root your phone again.
ok I downloaded the stock recovery file from dougpistons.com do i simply install it by renaming it to PB31IMG.zip and install it through hboot?
also, by doing this am i going to loose all of my backup in clockwork recovery?
thanks for all of your help!
Yep, that's how it's installed. Your backups are on the SD card, so they will still be there and work, assuming your hboot and recovery versions are the same.
K I have the file renamed and it is ready to go.... how do I install it thru hboot? I know how to get into hboot but I do not see an option to install
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
The file has to be named exactly PB31IMG.zip and placed on the root of the SD card (not in any folder). When you boot into hboot it will scan the card and ask to update, press volume up to confirm.
also make sure its not named PB31IMG.zip.zip in something like root explorer... also your SD MUST be FAT32 or HBOOT will not flash anything

The SD card has to be formatted fat32. You can check this by connecting to your computer and when the SD card pops up, right click on the drive and select "get info" or "properties".

[Q] HTC Evo 4G

Ok so I'm new to androids completly. Was looking to root my new phone. Let me start off by saying I'm in Japan and have the HTC Evo 4G. I was attempting to use unrevoked but seem to be stuck at how to get to the hboot. I just updated to 2.3.4 and when I power off my phone then hit volume down and power button to gain access to hboot it simply turns the phone back on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Head over the the revolutionary.io site, you should be good to go. You have to use that method to root for gingerbread on the evo.
Check this thread for rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218386
And turn off fast boot in settings/applications and then try to boot into hboot I think thats where it is I'm not sure I haven't been on sense in a while I'm not even sure if a stock ROM has it but look there to boot into hboot.

the recovery should be a PC36IMG.zip you flash that in hboot just make sure its on the root of your sdcard not in any folders then when you go to hboot it will find the update just except it.
The su apk should be a flashable zip just boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache then go to flash zip and choose that zip and flash it then reboot.
If this is your first time in recovery before you do anything make a nandroid backup this will backup everything in case anything goes wrong you can restore the backup and your phone will be just the way it was when you made the backup.

What happens is when you flash a rom, its a whole new phone basically [os] so it comes packaged with its own apps, themes. What you can do is:
- go into recovery, backup your current rom
- restore your initial backup
- use / download es file explorer [free] from the market
- enable su permissions, then navigate to /system/app and copy it to your sd card
- go back to recovery, restore the synergy backup
- once booted, install the app from the sd card
or if it was backed up, open titanium backup, restore the app and data.
Thanks for the help teh roxxorz. I got the mail thing figured out. Worked with es file but didn't work to well with titanium backup. Took some trial and error to find all the files needed cuz the paste the whole folder didn't work. Having other issues finding the contacts and getting force closes, so I decided to just not use that rom. On to finding another good one that works.

So I tried miui and that didn't work as well. Couldn't get the mail to work at all on that rom. Anybody happen to be in Japan and using this phone and could suggest a good rom to use that they have their au email and contacts moved over on, and have minimal issues?
