Battery Problem

Hi. I have a Voda branded TP2.
I have installed the 1% battery indicator and have realised that the battery is dropping at an alarming rate. In two hours without any data activity, just two calls of 5 mins each and the battery has already reached 74%. The number drops in front of my eyes. Quite scary actually.
Anybody else faced a similar porblem?

2 things I can advice you (as a TP2 beginner)
-First times: charge up to 12 hours non-stop even when light is green (has nothing to do with phone but with the chemical proces inyour battery) this will prolong lifetime
-This TP2 WWE ROM has a lot (and I mean A LOT!) of background running stuff compared to other WM 6.1 - ROMS. So you thing it is not using any current but it is!
Maybe you could install advance task manager and check out all running programs and processes ...

Thanks. I have done the 12 hours charging many times - about 6-7 times. Will try the advanced task manager.

Had a strange one last night. Went to be, put the phone on charge (was about 16% iirc), and the orange light came on to say it was charging. Then, this morning at about 3am, I hear the phone making bleeps. Check it out, and it's at 5%, with orange light flashing. Take out charger, put it back in, and it starts charging. I went out afterwards, came back about 4.30, and it says it was about 80% complete. Go sleep, wake up about 7.30am, and it's fully charged (green light). Then, I unplug charger, turn on, and it says 96%, and I notice it dropping the amount of charge in front of me (like OP's notice), until it got to about 91%.
Now, about 5 hours later, it reckons the charge is 74%. So dunno why it went down so quickly, and why it didn't actually charge... But will keep my eye on it and see how it goes...

Another way 2 keep your eye on it: check data connection (start>settings>connections>comm manager) a lot of stuff open this connection which uses power. if it turns on without you knowing .... (especially auto-update plugins (weather?)), sometimes AS also ...

I really don't know what to think of LiPo battery management, so many different theories.
Also, something that annoys me is that I fully charge the TP2 overnight, in the morning the lights green. If I simply unlug charger and plug in back in it well go back orange and stay orange for a good half hour... and I can start again a few times...

To be honest, I had to hard reset my device couple of times and haven't had time to 'fully' recharge it after the resets.
I guess I will give it a few days of full charging and then check on the battery.
But, I am not joking when the 1% battery meter just drops numbers faster than a meter at the gas station.

I had this problem when I have push mail turn on. If you disable push mail and set it to receive like every 15 mins, it save the power a lot.
Try the advance config to auto disconnect every x mins, this will helps as well.

yep your source isn't to bad. Beginning with full charges (6 to 12 hrs instead of 3 like the manual says) isn't about the old charge-memory story (because Lithium-Ion battery don't work this way, only the nickel-cadmium and nimH do) but about fully charging cells.
I mean the best way to look upon this is like a pile of bricks on top of each other (all different cells if you wish). So the first time it is important to give all the bricks enough time to charge - so even when it says 100% it does not mean that it has (you're indicator is a feedback of a reading by your cpu). So not all the bricks (let's say) have the same quality (yesyes even in this day and age of hight teck).
So you can also take this parallel to discharging: if you discharge fully, you risk that one of these bricks get busted and so will NEVER recover.
So i agree on this with your source a LiOn batter is bettery served with frequent partial charging and must NEVER be drained completely

I put the TP2 on for charging the whole night (about 9 hours). In the morning the LED was green and the battery meter said 100%. I took the charger off from the handset and re-inserted the tip in. Guess what? 95%.
AM not sure if it is a battery problem or handset problem?
Its come down to 73% with just one phone call of 5 mins. Mail is on, but its on manual and havent pulled anything since morning.
Any idea?

Correct way to recalibrate/wipe battery stats

Does anyone have a link for the thread that discussed the correct way to wipe battery stats when upgrading to a new Rom? I remember it went something like drain dead, charge to full, drain dead again then charge to full and wipe stats. I can't remember the complete process. Thanks for the help.

I've seen a couple different threads on that here, one saying discharge fully then charge while powered off, and the other saying to do a full charge "conditioning cycle". I did the latter and it seems to have made a difference.
Here's what I did:
Charge the phone fully with it powered on
When fully charged, disconnect cable
After green LED goes off, power the phone off
When phone is fully powered off, reconnect cable, amber charging light should be on
When LED goes green, disconnect cable
Repeat previous two steps 10 times
After 10th cycle, boot into recovery and wipe battery stats.
I am using Amon Ra recovery which has the wipe battery stats option under the Wipe option. I never did this when I had Clockwork recovery installed, so I don't know if the option is in the same place.
Being an electrical engineer, I find this business of battery conditioning interesting, along with the Ni-Cd "memory" vs. Li-Ion "no memory" issue. If anyone has found a decent physics-based explanation as to why these things do or do not have any basis in fact, I'd appreciate a link. Yes, I'm too lazy to Google it at the moment.

Hmm, I may have to look into this again. I charged my phone all night (powered off) and unplugged it this morning. I did nothing with it this morning but turn it on and look at it, then put it in standby (quick press of power button). It lost 16% of charge in less than 2 hours!
I'm running BS1.2 with the Baked1 (low voltage/best battery) kernel.
Damn, just installed System Panel and found that my CPU is at 100% constantly!

I'm trying this now. The longest I've pushed my battery was 22 hours... and that was with 39 minutes of screen on time, lol. In standby almost the entire 22 hours....

Ok, I believe my issue was related to a camcorder problem, my CPU usage has dropped back to normal levels after fixing that separate problem. After my battery recharges fully I will see what happens with the charge.

the other methods to do "calibrate your battery" (which isnt really calibrating the battery but the battery stats of the phone so it can accuratly judge when it stops and starts charging)
1) charge the phone to full
2) unplug and use phone till it shuts off from no battery (do not plug in until it shuts off)
3) charge phone to full again with out unplugging till 100% (check under about phone > battery it shoudl say full charge there)
this should reset the battery stats.
the last method is one from HTC
1)Charge the phone for 8 hours uninterupted with power on
2) turn off the phone and charge for an additional hour
3) turn ont he phone unplug it and let it sit for 2 minutes then plug it in for an additional hour.
all 3 methods listed should help. I personally dont like the x10 method because it has the potential and basically over charges the battery to make sure it is acctually at a full charge. It is much faster then the other 2 methods though so to each there own.

Dont waste your time on...
plug/unplug 10 times. It really doesn't recal the battery.

1. Phone on...charge until green light comes on. Immediately unplug and turn phone off.
2. Plug phone back in until green light comes on again. Immediately boot into Recovery and wipe battery stats.
3. Use the phone on battery until dies.
4. recharge phone to 100%
You are good to go!

If I tether during the day (5+ hours) a lot, is it bad on my battery? Isn't that like a constant charge or does once the LED turn green it stops trying to charge?

the evo doesnt do a trickle charge so when the light turns green it stops, this is why you will almost always drop 1-5% battery rather quickly.

Are you sure? My light has been green for a while, and my phone battery status says 'Full'.

There's a lot of confusion over how the battery / charging circuit works and how it reports. My advice is to just charge until it's green and full, then unplug it. If you leave it plugged in all night, unplug it for 10 mins in the morning, then plug it back in to top off.

That doesn't really help me SilverZero, my question is only if leaving it tethered (which means connected to USB) is bad for my battery.

Well on mine i would check it every once in awhile and i would see that once it get downs to under 90% that it would charge again till it recognized that it was full again. So based on that i dont think you should have to worry about it. It seems to only draw the charge when needed. I also leave mine plugged in alot when im home so its good to go when i leave and havent noticed a loss of battery life at all.

You guys don't want the charger to trickle charge. Li-Ion does not accept overcharge, even 0.01C (15 mA on the stock Evo battery) will cause it to vent and probably combust.

So does "calibrating the battery" calibrate the phone or the actual battery?
I ask because I have 3 spare batteries, wondering if I have to do this for each of them??? They are all standard size, one of them OEM

Is my phone the culprit?

So like everyone else my battery life sucks. No big deal. I bought the extended battery from Sprint, and I can see the battery diminish in front of my eyes. I mean dropping 1 percent per minute. Is there a way to test the phone to see if it is the culprit?

ther are lots of ways to check things. does it drop 1% a minute all the time meaning you only get 100 minutes? does it only do it when you take it off the charger at 100% where ti will drop to any where from 99-90% in a matter of minutes?
if the later then thats normal and is because the phone doesnt have a trickle charge. this means that the phone charges your battery to 100% then stops however the indicator on the phone will not change it will still show 100% once the acctual power reaches 90% the phone then charges again up to 100%. what this means is once you take your phone off the pwoer if it has been sitting there even if it says it is at 1005 it can be any where from 90-100% which the battery quickly changes to over first few minutes.
If it happens past 90% and all the time then something is wrong and you likely have at least 1 if not more apps running wild on you, you have things set to sync constantly, and you have everything under the sun turned on for your phone.
for apps the paid version of system panel is very nice for monitoring you can go to monitor top and top apps and see which apps are using the most battery/cpu.
witht he information you have given that is aobut the best i can tell you. I would not say everyone has crappy battery life with the evo as i have slowly gotten my phone set up and now with moderate usage i can get 14-15 hours and at least 8-10 with very heavy usage(stock battery) which i dont consider to be crappy battery life.

I appreciate the response, and I forgot to add that I'm running stock unrooted sense. This is not my first Android phone so I know about battery managing. I don't have everything sync every two minutes nor do I have everything turned on. It does drop rather quick even past 90 percent. I think it might be the phone it self. I doubt I got 2 bad batteries, one being extended. I'll see if I could get a device swapped out.

My first EVO was like that. It drained quickly shortly after charging. I could never figure it out. Till one night before going to bed, I noticed something weird about the bottom keys on the phone. They were " very dimmly " lit. The home, menu, return, search were all dimmly lit. It was I believe a defect in the phone. I got it swapped out. No problems like the 1% drain since then.

I'm obviously missing something here and your post isn't very clear. Why would you need to root your device just to use an extended battery? That doesn't make any sense. All you should have to do is put the extended battery on a charger and charge it until it is full and then for a few hours more initially, unless the directions state otherwise. Afterwards, insert it in the back of your EVO, turn on your device and voila! If your device isn't functioning after doing that, assume you have a defective extended battery and return it to where you got it from.

Your gonna have to go through like 5-6 FULL/discharge sessions. Charge it for like 3 hours after it hits 100% and then disconnect it and dont charge it UNTIL it completely dies. Then do it again like 5 times.

Thats so you can install a SBC Kernel but forget about that. Just do the full charge/discharge cycles and your battery should be good in like 3 days.

Iight Imma do it that way now

Even HTC said do NO fully discharge your batery, so I'll take anyone that poists that as bad information.
Here's what works for me:
Here's what I do, and I get PHENOMINAL Battery life.
There are two ways of conditioning a battery that stand out above the rest, and I combine them.
Download the battery monitor widget/app
Set it to your battery's maH in settings.
This isn't totally a needed step, but is a useful app.
Charge your phone until full.
Unplug it, turn it off, then plug it in for one hour.
Turn it on for two minutes, so it fully boots.
Turn it off, unplug it, when the light goes off, plug it back in for one hour.
That part of this is actually from HTC, on how they found the best results for charging.
Now, before you plug it in, unplug, wait for the light to go off, plug it back in.
When the light turns green, unplug it again. Repeat that step 10 times.
(It may not take 10, it may take more, but 10 is good)
While plugged in, boot to recovery, wipe your battery stats.
Then reboot to system.
A good habit to preserve battery life is to keep mobile data off, unless you need it. I used to turn wifi off, too, but lately, I leave it on.
How good is this?? I take my phone off the charger when I leave for work at 7AM, and usually, I go to bed at 11PM, when I charge it back in, and it's never below 80%, unless I've been really using the phone excessivley.
The other thing is, I do this, somewhat daily. I wake up, tuen the phone off ,so my alarm doesn't keep ringing every 15 minutes, unplug it, then not turn it back on til just before I leave, so it's getting that "treatment" at some level, every day.

You have to be rooted to wipe your battery stats. Just do what i said byt dont let the phone fully die then. Let it get to like 5% or something then FULLY charge it for like 2 hours after it hits 100%. Do that like 5 times. What the other dude said will work too. Just do what your comfortable with.

tldr: My Incredible drains battery when turned off :-/
I have an HTC Droid Incredible that I use for testing my developed apps, and for playing around with people's roms, and I have found an odd issue with it. I can charge up the battery and use it for hours and hours and it consumes what I would consider a normal amount of charge, but when I turn it off, it still consumes battery charge. I'll charge it to 100% and disconnect the charger, hold the power button and select Power Off, and when I turn it on the next day the battery is very depleted. Yesterday I did this, and this morning about 16 hours later, I turned it on to see a 23% charge. If I leave it for more than a couple days, it won't even turn on at all and I have to charge it again before I can do anything with it.
I've tested this over the past few weeks with two separate batteries (one used, one brand new), and the same thing happens with each battery. It's definitely the phone and not the battery, because I have taken the batteries out completely, waited a few days, and they stay near 100% charge.
Some history on this phone:
I got this phone from a friend in a semi-working state. I couldn't root, s-off, or really do anything with it, so I did a factory reset, messed with it for a while, and finally decided to follow the steps in this thread to "unlock,downgrade,and achieve s-off with htcDev". This has allowed me to mess with roms, etc, so I have installed a couple, and now have "inc-eng 4.1.1 RC2" installed from this thread, and this kernel: "[email protected] #64 Mon Sep 3 18:55:57 EDT 2012"
The issue at hand however was happening before I even had it in my hands, as my friend described the same thing happening to him (he did not mess with rooting, roms, etc).

Maybe the battery is bad... take it out of the phone at 100 and leave it overnight and see what happens life wise

Thanks, but I did test that, with both of the batteries I have. I've left them for multiple days out of the phone, and when put back in they show 95-100%.

Maybe it's not turning off all the way.
Here's another test: turn it off, remove the battery for about a minute, then put the battery back in. Turn it on the next day and look at the battery level.
Might be a ROM issue. What ROMs have you tried this with? Have you tried stock sense and CM7?

Will do, I'll post tomorrow with my results.

If you have fastboot enabled then the phone is never really off. Try charging it then pull the battery, and put it back in the phone but leave it off. Turn it on latter and see if there was any battery loss. Fastboot is like hibernation. Its possible that some app is misbehaving and trying to sync or something while its hibernating, draining the battery.

Alrighty so yesterday I charged both batteries to 100%.
Battery A stayed out of the phone on my desk.
Battery B I removed from the phone, waited 10 seconds, and put back in the phone (I did not turn it on).
This morning, the phone (with Battery B in it) would not turn on until I charged it for a few minutes, and displayed 0% charge when it finally let me turn it on with the charger connected.
This is so weird...
Also, the rom I'm using doesn't have a fastboot option that I can find.

Okay so Battery A I put into the phone at 4pm yesterday, turned it on and found it had a 73% charge. I then turned the phone off, waited a few minutes, put the battery in and left it on my desk. This morning 12 hours later, I turned it on and it has a 25% charge.
I'm so confused... if I don't turn the phone on, how are the batteries discharging? Both batteries keep their charge when left out of the phone for a prolonged period, but discharge when in a phone that hasn't been turned on. Bah! >_<

Mabey there is a short in your phone somewhere. Does the battery last like normal when the phone is on, or does it also die quickly?

I'll have to test this when i get home, but I beleieve the battery discharges at a normal rate when the phone is on.
(this is not my normal phone, just one I use for testing apps, etc. so I don't use it on a regular basis)
I'll charge one of the batteries to 100% and leave it on overnight, and post my results.

Okay I left my phone on for 18 hours in airplane mode, and it drained battery SLOWER than with the battery inserted into the phone and the phone never turned on.
So weird... I don't understand.

Mine drains when all the way off 2 but not that bad... I think it may be the MotherBoard keeping power to the Nand memory so it dosen't relock and keeping power to the CPU so it can be quicker on bootup

I'm assuming there's no way to stop it from doing this?
It's not a huge deal, as this is a test phone I use for development, but I may be eventually selling my test phones, so I try to keep them in good working order, or get them to a decent refurbished point Plus this is a weird enough phenomenon that I figured it deserved discussion.

There maybe no stopping it I guess because mine does it 2 but not that fast..... Oh yeah an I think this is the 1 test phone you don't sell It has 2 many good devs
