The purpose of this thread is to get more interest in the Kin twoM phones. Our goal is to either put some version of windows mobile on this phone, or Android. That goal seems somewhat far fetched right now but please take a look. Post away!
here is the forum which contains information on Hacking the Kin. according to the back of this phone it's considered a "windows phone" http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=677

Hey Guys,
just starting a new threat to look for info and ideas about the next subject:
I am going to get a new phone in the next few months. Probable looking for an HTC with WP7.
I dont know if I will like it and I am wondering if these new phones could be flashed back to WM6.5.
Of course I would be willing to help with all kinds of WP7 ideas an tests, even though I am not a developper myself.
So, the statement for the new threat:
--Would it be possible/worhty to make 6.5 roms for WP7 hardware?--
Possible, sure. Likely, no. WM6.5 is, for most intents and purposes, dead. Highly unlikely that anyone puts in the time and effort needed to hack the bootloader, etc of specific devices in order to backport the old OS.

I think u can buy a 6.5phone now
If you're looking for backwards compatibility Windows Embedded Handheld 7 (based on WM6.x) is scheduled for the second half of 2011.
I've been following the conversations backstage and I don't think WM6.5 is dead at all. WP7 has a lot of shortcomings when it comes to business use. No copy/paste, less customization, etc. In fact, it is a dumb smartphone which is more geared for the iphone type consumer...those who would gladly trade endless customization and features for simplicity. Those who look at phones as fashion accessories and toys rather than something designed to get work done more efficiently. Sadly, the market for this is much much larger than the market for serious smart devices. Steve Jobs figured this out which is why the iphone is such a big hit, but most of us here have been looking at these folks going "wow, you can copy/paste now? Neat. I've been doing that for years!".
I had a list at one point which detailed all the things that WP7 does NOT do that 6.5 does and I can tell you that enterprise customers will not accept WP7 as a replacement to WM6.x. Many large companies out here are Microsoft partners with exchange servers, sharepoint, Office suitefor all employees and as a matter of IT support, they only support Windows Mobile so that their IT departments only have to manage MS products. If hey were to cut off SM6.x entirely while rolling out WP7, purchasing departments across the country would make a huge shift to blackberry. I'm certain that this is why RIM decided to go forward with plans for a new OS and why HP purchased Palm with their WebOS. They are both counting on MS doing this.
However, through conversations with various insiders at MS, it appears these fears are unfounded. Windows 6.5 is expected to continue being developed even into next year with possible future upgrades to the OS itself. WP7 will not support skins such as the HTC Sense interface, and because of the business users with business devices - particularly full qwerty devices like the Treo, Glisten, etc - they do expect to continue development.
I have heard rumors that there is actually a long development cycle planned for WM which involves the next iteration of Windows Mobile which will be renamed Windows 7 Professional. This would be in line with MS and their way of doing things and matches up nicely with Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7. I don't know how much of this part is true and how much is just rumors floating around backstage, but it makes a lot of sense.

..not dead....dying. The next iteration of 'WM' is BASED on 6.5.x and then in 2011 a version (based on WP7) with XNA and silverlight support is due.
Here's some info on the next 'WM' release....~note...this is not a 'WP' release so doesn't fall under the 'Windows Phone' umbrella, it's a new version of Windows Mobile - Embedded and it;s backwards compatible.

God, I'm so tired of hearing this. There will be copy&paste, they said it often enough...

All the products you name (Office, Sharepoint, Exchange) are natively supported by WP7. Have you seen ANY WP7 demo video lately?
I'm not trying to be a WP7 hater when I say this, but shouldn't WP7 be paired with iPhone on the new xda site? I only say this due to their similarities.
This version of xda should probably focus on more open OSs like Android, WinMo~6.5 and webOS.
BTW, could you please remove twitter from the comments area? You might as well just write Echo, echo, echo...... all the way down the page.
The only reason the iPhone section is separate from XDA is that it is a non-hTC and does not run the same OS that other hTC devices do. Hence the Droid has a subforum although it's not by hTC, because many discussions relating to Android on the forum are still relevant to the device. Since the iPhone is the only iOS phone that does not apply.
No, it needs to stay here..
It is windows, if you are going to remove one of them, why are you leaving the others? Makes no sense...
I think WP7 (or better said: the WP7 Devices) should stay right here, where they are. That's just my opinion, but I think that if someone cracked WP7, so that we can have other OS's on it, it'll be pretty "open" too. I hope you understand, what I mean...'Cos WM6.5 itself isn't an open OS, too, is it?
This site started with WM and should stick with WM, No matter what version
Although it would increase the amount of devving over at iPD, It's very little at the moment, although that should change when we release our w.i.p
Has anyone tried to port over the windows phone 7 os to android? I believe it can be done seeing as though they ported android over to the HD2.
This belongs in Q&A.
There is a new UI that emulates the Windows 7 Phone on the android phones. But over all why would you want to go backwards, to what is history and should be dead.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864034
It is unlikely that we will see a port of WP7 to Android due to licensing issues. Android porting to other devices does not have this restriction as it is open source. Hope this helps.
BTW, there is a Q&A section which is best suited for these kinds of general questions. You're new though, so I don't see any reason to be a **** to you just for posting in the wrong session. Perhaps people can grow up a little bit around here and stop being so rude...
Hey there,
as many of you know, the Marketplaces of iOS and Android are far ahead of the one Windows Phone has.
Those offer a bigger list of Apps for almost everything you can imagine.
Of course Apps get ported to Windows Phone, but that goes pretty slow.
What I thought of was creating a "Request an App Development" board for Windows Phone 7 on XDA. So developers who got skills, but no ideas yet can browse XDA and prolly begin to release one or two apps which are already present on iOS or Android.
Of course we do not support cracked apps. So those who ask for warez versions of the apps on marketplace should get warned. This board should be only related to releasing new, missing apps.
Since XDA is daily visited by thousands of users, this would be a great place for devs to look for new ideas. All in one place.
The current Software Development board is more like a "Post an App, Talk about it!" board.
There is a stickied Request thread in the Software Development Board
When the Windows phone version gets released, Does anyone know if it's possible to try a Windows Rom out on are android versions of the HTC One M8 ?
Pff can people please stop making these threads and use the existing windows topic threads !!! It's getting a bit boring now......

Anything is possible. I've read the HW specs are the same. The problem may lie in the fact that Windows is not open source and each device it's on needs a license agreement. Not that that will stop anyone but if you get caught you might spend some vacation time at the Grey Bar Motel.
This is why I decided to stay with Android and the open source community. I want to control my device, after all I paid $600 for it I should be able to do what I want. Windows, although pretty closed, is no where near the control Apple has over it's users. I wouldn't touch an Apple product with a 79 1/2 foot long pole.
Thread Closed - This is Android Development subforums. Windows development should be discussed in the Windows development subforum. See Mr. Hofs link above.
